Nayana KR and Aishwarya CA won the IRIS 2012 Grand Award in the Senior Category for their project in which they presented Vaina’s Square Lemma: Extension of Pythagoras Theorem on Division of Equal Squares.

Their project was selected from 110 others which were presented at the Initiative for Research & Innovation in Science 2012 (IRIS), one of India’s largest science initiatives for students in classes 5-12. The event was held at Bal Bhawan, New Delhi on Dec. 20th, 2012.

Hima Bindu TV & Bhargavi N Sarode (Amrita Vidyalayam, Devangere), won Silver for their presentation in Chemistry: Making Ink From Waste Tea Decoction.

Two other groups, also from Amirta Vidyalayam, Devangere, were recognized for their participation: Athreya Sharma & Bhagavathi Sharma in Medicine and Health Sciences: Crude Drugs as an Anti-Cancer Agent; and Ganga K M for her presentation in Engineering – Electrical and Mechanical: Automatic Level Crossing System & Automated Spot Lights at Railroad Junctions.

IRIS is sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Intel. The initiative promotes and nurtures science and scientific research among young Indian innovators, recognizes and rewards outstanding projects, and provides opportunites to represent India at global science competitions.

ISEF is the world’s largest pre-college science fair competition where more than 1,600 young innovators from 65 contries come together to share ideas, showcase cutting-edge independent research, and compete for over USD 4 million in awards and scholarships.

Our new academic year was started on June 3^rd . The Re-opening ceremony was inaugurated by our chief guest Sri. B Prasannakumar retired senior PWD officer. Our principal Bri. Sarithamam delivered an inspiring speech. The programme ended with national Anthem.

The ceremony started in the traditional way with the lighting of the lamp and was followed by the prayer song. Names of the newly elected leaders were announced. The Head Boy for the academic year 2015-16 is Harish Puri Goswami and the Head Girl is Dhruva Patil. The Sports Head Boy is Pushpendar Thakur and the Sports Head Girl is Urvi Bhatt. This year the school also appointed Aditya Shinde as Assistant Head Boy, Amrutha Ratheesh as Assistant Head Girl and Suresh Singh as Junior Sports Boy. The School Captains and Vice Captains for the respective houses were also announced during the ceremony.

The elected representatives were conferred with their respective titles. They were adorned with sashes and badges by our respected Principal Brni. Rekha N. They were asked to take the oath of dedication and faithfulness wherein they pledged to discharge their duties with honesty, sincerity and integrity.

The Head Boy and Head Girl in their speeches thanked the school for electing them and giving them the opportunity to fulfil their promises. They promised to work hard towards living up to the expectations of the Principal and the teachers and work in sync with the mission of the school.

The enthusiastic House Mothers and School Captains promised to support the students in their endeavours. The House Mothers encouraged the students to participate in all academic and cultural events in order to foster a healthy competitive spirit among them. The House Mother of Anadamayi House, Ms. Keerti, rendered a beautiful poem “diye se diye ko jalaana padega” to highlight this thought. School coordinators, Ms. Santhi Sekhar and Ms. Sridevi Kumar also addressed the students and implored the Student Council to discharge their duties in a responsible manner. They said that the actions of the Council must inspire every student of Amrita Vidyalayam.

The Principal congratulated the members of the Student Council. In her inspirational address, she stressed upon the fact that being a leader is a “responsibility” and not a “privilege”. A leader is one who is righteous and shoulders his/her responsibilities rightly, sacrificing pleasures to perform his/her duties. She asked everyone present to focus on “How we live” instead of “How long we live”. The answer to this question will be unravelled only if we dig deep into our minds and ask ourselves “Why we live”. She also encouraged the students to take pride in the rich culture of our country.

She concluded her address with the mantra -

She acknowledged the grace of “Amma” and prayed that “Amma” may guide the teachers and students towards the right path.

The colourful ceremony came to an end with the chanting of Shanthi Mantra.

In his speech, Swamiji lauded the teachers for being in such a ‘divine’ profession and urged everyone to take inspiration from the life of Krishna who is known as the Supreme Guru of all. As Teachers’ Day coincided with Janmashtami, he took the opportunity to elucidate through various examples, the life of the Kshara Purusha, who is mobile and active and who pervades the Akshara Purusha, (Krishna) who is unmoving and inactive. Krishna, who was a philosopher and guide to many, belonged to everyone but was attached to none. He guided all during their difficulties and showed the way to lead an ideal life.

Principal Ma’am held the audience spell bound by sharing her experiences about her close interactions with ‘Amma’. She brought out the essence of devotion, and urged the teachers to utilize their time effectively and find practical solutions to any problems they may face. As students spend most of their time interacting with teachers, the teachers have to also act as a torch bearer for them, she said.

The engaging discussion concluded with a vote of thanks by the Principal. As a token of appreciation, teachers and non-teaching staff received gifts from the school. The seminar had awakened the child in all as the cheerful teachers were seen hugging each other to celebrate the wonderful occasion. This was indeed a memorable event that will be cherished by all.

The morning began with a Puja to Lord Krishna and the traditional hanging of the clay pot containing curd in the school quadrangle. The tiny tots of the Pre-primary were dressed up in traditional outfits of chaniya choli and dhoti kurta representing ‘Bal Gopal’ and the ‘gopis’. The Principal took this opportunity to address the students in order to convey Amma’s message. In her message, Amma outlined the different roles that Krishna played during his lifetime and highlighted living a “life of purpose”. She asked the students to draw inspiration from Krishna’s life and inculcate his teachings in our everyday lives. Just as Krishna’s face evokes memories of a blissful smile and playfulness, our life should also be lived in a similar manner – with a smile in any given situation.

Amidst the energizing thumping of the band and songs devoted to Lord Krishna, the school was witness to the joyful moments where students danced with complete abandon. Occasions such as these help us to understand the divinity of these saints who have walked upon this earth.

The session was a very refreshing experience for the teachers. Mrs. Babita Siddhu in her vote of thanks appreciated the efforts of Mrs. Devakani and called the workshop a very informative one. She also thanked the Principal for providing the teachers with such a wonderful opportunity.

Students participated enthusiastically in various events organized by the school to commemorate Onam. The traditional “pookkalam” was elaborately prepared by the students, and it was a treat to see the combination of traditional and modern ideas. Clay Art, Best out of Waste and Pot Making was conducted for Pre-Primary and Primary students.

The students displayed a great sense of patriotism, understanding the value of freedom and respecting the culture of India through their speeches in both Hindi as well as English. The Chief Guest, in his fervid speech encouraged the students to enjoy these carefree moments and at the same time remember their duty towards serving society. Small contributions like teaching financially weak students will instil a sense of responsibility. Our respected Swamiji, in his speech urged the students to respect the culture and tradition of India.

The cultural programme that followed showcased the talents of the students of Amrita Vidyalayam. The “baar baar hum bolo yaar hum” dance conveyed the spirit of Unity. The melodious rendition of “Vijayi Vishwa Tiranga Pyaara” and “Sooraj Badle Chanda Badle” were sung by all the students in unison.

The tiny tots of the Pre-primary section of the school were equally enthusiastic about celebrating Independence Day. The teachers of the Pre-primary section used innovative ideas to teach the children the spirit of Independence Day. Children were asked to recognize the 4 colours in the National Flag. They were also taught the significance of each colour and the order in which they appear in the National Flag. The children made flags using coloured rice, grass, leaves, pulses, finger paint, collage, vegetable dye etc.

The programme concluded with Shanti Mantra and the prayer for world peace and harmony, “Lokaha Samasthaha Sukhino Bhavantu”.

Learning anything requires discipline and dedication. A guru is an integral part of that learning. If you are sincere and dedicated about learning - whether it is the arts or about life - you will find a guru. To lead and to be led, both the guru and the shishya need sincerity and a dedication to each other. The only qualification a shishya should possess in abundance is unwavering faith in the guru. Seeking the right answers is a must to obliterate any doubts that stay in the mind. But without faith, the teachings of the guru cannot be absorbed to its fullest potential. Our society has progressed so much that information is available at our fingertips. But a guru is the one who gently lets us seek out the truth by teaching us to understand ourselves first. Once this is done, the thirst to know more only increases. This curiosity leads us to the various questions that only a guru can answer.

The day of Guru Purnima is traditionally the time when seekers offer the Guru their gratitude and receive blessings. Maharishi Ved Vyasa, one of the greatest sages in the Hindu religion, was born on this day. We are indebted to this ancient saint who edited the four Vedas, wrote the 18 puranas as well as Up-puranas, and also penned the Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavatam. This day is also known as Vyasa Purnima.

Guru Purnima was celebrated in Amrita Vidyalayam with great reverence. The programme commenced with the chanting of Guru Stotram & Ashtotharam, which was then followed by bhajans sung by students and teachers. Children offered flowers at the holy lotus feet of Satguru Mata Amritanandamayi Devi as a mark of their reverence. The program ended with aarti and the chanting of Shanti Mantra.

We are blessed to have Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, who is leading us through the path to eternal bliss in human form. We offer our gratitude and sincere thanks to our beloved Satguru “AMMA” on this occasion of Guru Purnima.

The emphasis of the programme was to instil Amma’s message – ‘Education for life and education for living’, in the minds of young children. The importance of Yoga has been felt even more after the UN declared June 21 as International Yoga Day. </p.

The benefits of yoga as being the best technique which will revive every bone, muscle, joint and tissue of the body was stressed upon. Students from classes VIII to XII were taught the ‘Surya Namaskar’ which infuses the body with energy and the mind with calmness. The students were also taught to deal with the various emotions characteristic of their age and work towards bringing harmony in their lives by discussing their worries with parents, teachers and peers.

Students from classes V to VII were exposed to different yoga asanas which would help to increase their awareness and energy level. The abundant energy that these young children have was utilized fully by the brahmacharinis practicing different forms of yoga in a playful manner. The room was filled with the cheers and applause of the young ones who would not tire and wanted even more exercise. The students attended the session in batches and were able to partake of the bliss of yoga.

The Science club saw a hub of activities wherein the children of different grades learnt different theories by personally experimenting them.  The 3^rd and 4^th Graders learnt about the Properties of Air.  By dipping an empty glass in a bowl of water, they learnt that Air creates pressure and takes up space.  They also learnt about the pressure air exerts with the help of a fully filled bottle, which, when pricked with needle will exert pressure and spill water with great force.

The 5^th and 6^th Graders were excited to hold their colorful Kaleidoscopes.  The students followed the detailed instructions given by the teachers and brought materials like 3 broad glass pieces, broken bangles, colored papers to make their personal kaleidoscopes.

The 7^th and 8^th Graders learnt through experimentation the natural methods of purifying water.  They first learnt the technique of using alum and potassium permanganate to purify water.   They also learnt to make a water filter using baggase, coal, cotton, sand and pebbles. The students were able to clearly see the natural and effective manner in which sedimentation and filtration takes place.  The experiments conducted were simple and can be done in a cost-effective manner.

Integrity club:

Students from 3^rd Grade to 8^th grades learnt the Integrity club pledge and understood its deep meaning. Videos of Mata Amritanandamayi’s selfless work towards the society were shown to inspire selflessness and instill responsibility in the minds of the young minds. Students of 5^th and 6^th Grade watched a documentary which detailed the life of Swami Vivekananda’s spiritual journey.  It also helped them understand how he tirelessly worked in his short span of life to spread the message of discipline, spirituality and develop inner strength through meditation.

Eco and Nature Club:

Students in all grades learnt about the habitats of rain creatures like snail, earthworm, crab etc.  The season was ideal as the rain brings these creatures above the ground for the students to observe and understand.  Students made posters to depict their understanding of these animals.

Literary Club:

The focus on this club was to inculcate public speaking.  Students from every grade were encouraged to share stories and recite poems in the language that they are comfortable in.  The thrust was to instill confidence and develop their language skills.  Students participated whole-heartedly and were heard telling stores and recite poems in English, Hindi, Marathi etc and slokas in Sanskrit.

Art Club:

Finger paper puppets adorned the tiny fingers of 3^rd and 4^th graders.  The students enjoyed making these puppets out of chart paper.  They drew figures of their choice and their imagination was on display on their fingers. The 5^th and 6^th Graders learnt the art of making collage out of newspaper and magazine cut-outs.  Students also used the art paper which looked very vibrant when cut in to small pieces to make images like flower vases, flowers etc.  Every student in the 7^th and 8^th Grade had a smile on their face as they held the rose made by them using Duplex paper.   They understood how these simple techniques can be utilized to make thoughtful gifts instead of spending money to buy gifts from outside. 

Health and Wellness Club:

Students from 3th to 8^th grade were engaged in learning how the body and mind work in unison.  The students came up with skits to show how to remain physically active which in turn will lead to an alert mind.  Students also had discussions on how to avoid junk foods and be conscious of their eating habits.  The open discussion helped the children to understand the unhygienic way in which road side foods are cooked and why one should avoid them. Skits were performed by students where these points were highlighted.

“Matha Pitha Guru Deivam” is a very popular adage in the Sanskrit language. The meaning of this adage is the greatest truth, and conveys the order in which one should express reverence. The phrase is a basic tenet of existence from the time of the Vedas and beyond, and represents the hierarchy in which one should respect these entities. Students of higher classes and their mothers participated with great reverence in the Matru Puja.

The puja started at 9.00 a.m. with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Br. Avyayayamrita Chaitanya amidst chants of “Shree Amriteshwaryai Namah”. The Guru Paduka Puja was conducted by offering flowers and chanting the 108 sacred names of Amma. As a part of the ceremony, the children washed the feet of their mothers and then applied chandan and kumkum. The children garlanded their mothers, worshipped them and took their blessings. The mothers, in turn, blessed their children by kissing them on the forehead. This wonderful moment was made even sweeter by the children feeding sweets to their mothers. The faces of the children and their mothers were beaming with joy throughout the puja.

The ceremony was followed by the rendition of Amma’s bhajans by Swamiji, Principal Brni. Rekha, teachers and students. Swamiji’s satsang was aimed mainly at the students. He advised them to value the unconditional love of their parents, help them in whatever way they could and most importantly, care for them. He made them aware of the fact that if they were deprived of something, it may not be intentional, but because of their parents inability to provide it. The students should strive to be truthful to their parents and desire only their blessings. The blessings and happiness that is derived by fulfilling the dreams of one’s parents is unparalleled.

The aarthi was performed by the teachers. The program ended with the chanting of the Shanti Mantra. Everybody offered flowers at the Holy Mother’s feet and received prasad from Swamiji.

Drug and alcohol abuse are serious problems that affect children of school-going age much more than in the past. In order to make each student aware of its ill- effects, our Amrita Vidyalayam organised a mass assembly. After prayers, the school took an oath to stay away from drugs and alcohol. It was heartening to see that each and every student joined hands in taking the oath and imbibing its spirit.

Bri. Pavithramrita Chaitanyaji, Coordinator of Amrita Vidyalayams, Smt. Vijayalakshmi Narendran, Academic Director of Amrita Vidyalayams, Ms. Sandhyaji, Sri Gopalakrishnan, PF Cell Coordinator and Sri Narendran visited our school on July 6^th. Vijayalakshmi Ma’am shared her vast experience with our teachers and gave an inspiring and enriching talk on ways to improve the academic standard of students.

Ms. Sandhyaji's class awakened the spirit of patriotism and instilled great reverence to our heritage in the teachers.

June 21st was declared as International Yoga Day by the United Nations General Assembly. According to this, the first International Yoga Day was observed all over the world on June 21st, 2015. On that day, our school organized International Yoga Day celebrations in the early hours of the morning according to CBSE directions.

The day started with prayer followed by a welcome speech by School Leader Sreelakshmi V.D. of class XII. After this, all the students chanted ‘Adityahridayam’ together, paying tribute to the Sun God. Chief Guest Sri Sunil Kumar, renowned Yoga Master and Vice President of Sevanjali Trust, Kodungallur, gave a speech conveying the importance of Yoga in our life. Guided by Sri Sunil Kumar, the students performed different yogasanas as a result of which they felt relaxed and happy. Devipriya T.S. of class XII proposed the vote of thanks.

On June 23rd, another session of yoga demonstration and a seminar on yoga was conducted in collaboration with Vivekananda Vedic Vision Centre, Kodungallur.

Amrita Vidyalayam, Kodungallur commemorated “World Reading Day” on June 19th, 2015. The function started with a prayer paying tribute to Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. School Leader Kiran T.S. of Class XII conveyed the importance of the day through his speech. He said that books are gifts that can be opened again and again. Students were given time to read at least one book. Avanthika Prathap of X B and Rifana Sathar of X A presented a review of the books that they had read.

It was a noble gesture on the part of Aswin Raj of IX B, Abhiram M. Sunil of IX B and Mahadevan T. Pradeep of XI Science, when they donated books to the school library, thereby imparting the message of sharing the treasure of knowledge with others.

The four Houses have to be guided by an authoritative hand in order to function effectively. Therefore, House Mistresses too were chosen on that day. All the council members were honoured by Principal Bri. Gurupriyamritha Chaithanya by adorning them with sashes.

The ceremony concluded with the captains pledging to render their duties sincerely for their school.

The laughter and cries of the new children spread throughout the school and filled everyone’s hearts with happiness.

The day also witnessed another happy moment. The students of Class XII, 2014-15 were given a token of love by the school for their excellent performance in the CBSE Board exams. Along with them, students of Class X, 2014-15 with all A1 grades were also honoured.

Amrita Vidyalayam, Kodungallur made the day remarkable in the presence of our Chief Guest Advocate Chandrahasan, an ardent lover of values who inspired the students during the session with his informative talk. He planted an herb, thereby teaching the relevance of nurturing an herbal garden on campus. Our Principal, Bri. Gurupriyamritaji presided over the meeting. The significance of the day was conveyed by the General Captain, Lakshmy Jayaram, through her speech. The song about the environment sung by Sreelakshmy G .Menon was captivating. School Leader, Kiran T.S. welcomed the gathering and Amrita Ashok of Class XII proposed the vote of thanks. School Leader, Sreelakshmy led the school in taking the oath for the day. This year also, the students contributed a few more saplings to their Herb & Vegetable Gardens. A skit that followed conveyed the message of following the maxim, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The attempt by a group of students to bring back the feel of an old village by restructuring a corner of the campus was praiseworthy.

To make it more distinctive, the teachers presented a cultural event wherein they dressed themselves as representatives of different states of India and said a few words in the regional language of that particular state. It was the teachers’ way of expressing their love for the tiny tots.

The intention of the visit was to inculcate the values like love and compassion in the young minds so that they grow into responsible individuals whom the society can lean on. The visit was a small step towards imbibing the teachings of our Beloved Amma in their young minds.

World Peace Day was celebrated on 21st of September. A painting competition was held with ' World Peace' as the theme.  Children lighted earthen lamps on the word "PEACE" in a beautifully arranged flower pattern, symbolising the dispelling of darkness.  Amma's 'Ashtotara' was chanted followed by the chanting of the manatra 'Lokaha Samastha' 18times.  A two minute silent prayer was observed for world peace.

As a part of Navarathri celebration, the students of classes V to VIII performed a Saraswathi Puja conducted under the guidance of Sampoojya Swami Poornamritananda Puri. In his satsang, Swamiji spoke about the importance of pujas and the need to get attuned to God. Later he distributed prasadam to all the students.

The harvest festival of Onam was celebrated with gaiety and enthusiasm. Onapookalam competition was held class-wise. Tug of war was held house-wise for students of class X, XI and XII.A Thiruvathirakali by the teachers was the highlight of the celebration. Chendamelam and Pulikali were the other special attractions of the occasion. An Onasadya was organized for the teachers. Payasam was distributed by Sampoojya Swami Purnamritananda Puri.

Sri Krishna Jayanthi was celebrated in school. The students of class 1 presented an enchanting dance depicting the Leelas of Sri Krishna on the occasion. The traditional Uriyadi brought in a festive atmosphere to the programme.

Everyday Ramayana Parayanam and bhajans were conducted in the morning assembly. On the concluding day of the celebrations, a colourful dance drama depicting the coronation of Sri Rama was presented by the students of class X.

Aug 14: A team of doctors from AIMS conducted  a dental check-up for the students.

Nov 25: The students of std IX and X attended a programme at AIMS Hospital where they were given an awareness about the dreaded disease, Cancer. Dr.Dinesh explained to them about the procedures involved with detection and treatment of cancer. The students were taken to the Radiology Dept and a question-answer session was organised.

Nov 28 and 29: The students of class X were taken to AIMS Hospital for a demonstration of first aid. Dr.Vinod conducted the programme where practical demonstration of Artificial Respiration was done on models.

Dec5: As a part of creating an awareness about sanitation, the students of classes were able to see the Sewage Treatment Plant in the school campus. Mr.Mithun Suresh of the Water Treatment Dept, AIMS explained in detail about the procedure involved in the process.

Dec12: Dental and Eye check-up: A team of doctors from AIMS Hospital conducted dental and eye check-up for the students.

Feb 4: A team of doctors from AIMS Hospital conducted a programme on Diabetes awareness for the students of class VIII and IX. The doctors discussed about the causes of Diabetes and the ways to prevent it.

Our school along with sixteen other Amrita Vidyalayams across the country bagged the prestigious National School Sanitation Award 2012 instituted by the CBSE. This award was given on the basis of sanitation rating introduced by the CBSE in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development and Ministry of Urban Development. Union HRD Minster M M Pallam Raju presented the award to the school Principal, Bri.Bhakthipriyamrita Chaitanya at a function held at New Delhi.

Amrita Pre Primary section celebrated Grandparents Day-Sneha Sangamam on September 24, 2012. The main aim of this programme was to onstill the traditional value of respecting one’s elders, particularly grandparents. Poojya Swami Poornamritananda Puri inaugurated the function. Senior Principal, Smt.Vijayalakshmi, Bri.Bhakthipriyamrita Chaitanya and one of the senior teachers, Mrs Chandramathi spoke on the occasion.

In his inaugural address, Swamiji quoted Amma’s words and said that those who have lead a life based on values throughout their lives will be able to live a happy life in later years.The parents have a great responsibility to bring up their children based on traditional values which are embedded in our culture. The grandparents can also play a major role in guiding the young minds in the right path. In the old joint family system, the experience and maturity of grandparents were respected and the children were able to grow up into balanced personalities. But in the modern nuclear family each one live in an island of their own and the interactive and loving kindness of the grandparents are missed. The unconditional love and care showeredby thye grandparents which helped the younger generation into secure and balanced individuals have become a distant dream.

Senior Principal Smt. Vijayalakshmi shared her own experiences with audience.She said that time is a precious commodity in modern times and the present day parents lack the patience and experience of the grandparents who fill the gap by giving the children loving care. Smt Chandramathi, a senior teacher ttoo addressed the gathering. She told that celebrations like the Grandparents Day is a welcome change from other programmes and is a reminder to all grandparents about their duties. As a representative of all grandparents, Smt. Ambujakshi, a grandmother of Medha of LKG too spoke on the occasion.

It was special moment for all the elders present when the children offered them flowers with a lot of respect. Later Swamiji distributed Prasadam and the vote of thanks was proposed by one the nursery teachers Smt. Saritha thus bringing the curtains down to a very special and wonderful programme.

Amma spoke at the august gathering of spiritual leaders at Vatican upon receiving an invitation from His Holiness Pope Francis.

The students of Amritavidyalayam schools are very keen to translate Amma’s words into action. Their outreach extend even upto the remote villages of India, consisting of such activities like feeding the children, providing them dresses, helping them to read and write, etc.

The students even participate in cleaning programs covering public places and roads. Cordiality is one of their hallmarks and they have no inhibition in sharing moments of happiness or moments of broochiness. A gradual, positive, culture evolution certainly is taking place through Amritavidyalayams scattered all over India.

The resource person for the workshop was Mrs. Leela Menon, a well experienced retired nursery teacher who had served as Teacher-in-Charge at many reputed schools for several years.

The workshop was intended to expose our KG teachers to improved methods of teaching, and to introduce innovative ideas in the teaching learning continuum.

Sadgamaya Summer Camp 2014, with the theme “Values from Valmiki,” was conducted at Amritapuri, May 7 – 10, 2014. 2,000 students of all Kerala Amrita Vidyalayam attended the camp. Swamini Krishnamrita Prana, one of the senior disciples of Amma, inaugurated the 3 day work shop for Std X students of all Kerala Amrita Vidyalayam schools by lighting the traditional oil lamp. She did a short and sweet benedictory address followed by a power point presentation about Ramayana by Br. Dhyanamrita Chaitanya.

The first day event started with the yoga for thousand boys. The facilitator was none other than the yoga adept, Bri. Shobhana and her team of Western yoga practitioners. Yoga for around thousand girls followed. This was the first item on all the three days of the camp.

Dr. Somasekharan enlightened the students on the peculiar kind of relationship among the brothers in Ramayana. The bond between Sri Rama, Lakhsmana, Bharatha and Satrughna is unique that one can see supreme love among them untainted by selfishness. Quite different is the relationship between Bali and Sugriva, the monkey brothers. Yet another example is that of Ravana and Vibhishana, the rakshasa brothers. Sri. E.V.Menon enthralled the students with his excellent oratory. His appealing physique, modulated voice, convincing spirit, depth of knowledge and experience made his talk stand out.

On the second day, Mr. Vidya Sagar spoke about Sri Rama’s most humble and great disciple, Sri. Hanuman. He related his anecdotes with real time experiences in life. He explained a true story wherein one of his friend’s daughter, who was just a fourth class student, didn’t want to worship Hanuman after hearing sarcastic remarks about him from her class mates. He described how the lofty aspects of our ancient philosophy are badly targeted as meaningless ideologies. Br. Sivamrita Chaitanya, in charge of M.A.Math, Thriuvananthapuram, made it very clear why Ravana, in spite of being a very great scholar, musician and powerful king could not succeed in life. It was just because he didn’t have the grace of guru. He didn’t have the humility to accept the advices of his grandfather, wife, brother or anyone else.

Dr. Lakhmi Sankar, spoke about the women characters of Ramayana on 10^th, the third day. She stressed the need for strength and transparency for the girls of present generation, who are exposed to the risks of several physical and mental abuse. Sampoojya Swami Amritaswaroopananda Puri, the Vice Chairman of M.A.Math, addressed the students in the concluding session. He asked the students why do they believe the story of Ramayana. He explained the reason himself that we see a person with immense love, compassion and care in Amma and that is a proof that such personalities that are explained in Ramayana and other Ithihasas are true.

Amma arrived on the stage around 11.a.m on 10^th and She addressed the gathering of 2000 students with Her inimitable way. She stressed the need of wearing uniform in schools and colleges with a true incident. She advised the students to learn to say, ‘NO’ in circumstances which take us to wrong. Students cleared their doubts and they danced to the tune of Mata Rani bhajan sung by Amma. Amma distributed seeds to the two hundred students who participated in ‘Wealth from Waste’ and gardening workshop and She also gave individual darshan to all the participants while the theatrics workshop participants presented a skit on Ramayana.

After lunch, on all the days of the camp, the students got divided into eight different groups for various workshops. Theatrics, chitrarachana, recycling, gardening, insight games, etc were conducted with profound enthusiasm and excellent participation. Students were also taken on a visit to the Amritapuri campus of Amrita University.

Amma wanted to give the students a treat to the taste buds too. She made special arrangements for payasam, ice cream and masala dosa.

As part of a pioneering initiative by the central board of secondary education, a 5 day workshop on effective management and leadership was organized in the Amritapuri campus of Amrita University from 16^th to 20^th October. Senior administrators, Principals of Amrita Vidyalayams from Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmadabad, Karnataka and 27 schools in Kerala attended the workshop.

The particular session was lead by Mr. Sandeep N.B, the National coordinator of OD Alternatives. The workshop was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by the coordinator of Amrita Vidyalayams, Bri. Pavitramrita Chaitanya, along with Bri. Virajamrita Chaitanya, the Principal of Amrita Vidyalayam, Mysore.

Amrita schools, who have considerable reputation for imparting education in traditional value based way, are expected to boost their reach to the students by bringing in modern means of data communication. For this, the school managers are equipped with the latest technologies and better management skills, apart from advanced behavioral skills. The board expects to keep the senior administers and principals updated with the latest methodologies of pedagogy for the same and hence they are required to attend new training scheme for a minimum of 5 days per year.

The students from Amrita Vidyalayam, Davangere– Nayana KR and Aishwarya CA of Class 10–  have won Fourth Grand Award in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair 2013 held at Arizona, USA. They won the prize in Mathematical Science Category for their experiment – Dissection of square into ‘N’ congruent squares. The fair was from May 12 to 17. There were 1600 participants from 70 countries of 9 students representing India.

In a Union Government-sponsored national rating of CBSE Schools all over the country, Amrita Vidyalayams have topped bagging 16 out of 100 awards.

There are more than 10,200 CBSE Schools in India of which nearly 1,500 are in Kerala.  In Kerala itself, Amrita won 10 out of 19 total awards in the State.

Awards were given for: (i) Awareness Generation leading to Behavioural Change through Students and Community Mobilization, (ii) Technical Innovation and Interventions, (iii) Creation & Conservation of Green Spaces, etc.

The National School Sanitation Ratings is promoted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), Government of India, on an annual basis for those Schools who have been rated online for sanitation and taken noteworthy steps towards betterment of the sanitation scenario in their Schools in varied ways.

Dr. M.M. Pallam Raju, Union Cabinet Minister for Human Resource Development, conferred the Awards at a function in Delhi today.

The Amrita Vidyalayams are managed by the Mata Amritanandamayi Mission Trust in Kerala.  Out of the 16 Awardees – Amrita Vidyalayams, 6 are outside the State (Secunderabad, Kolkata, New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Durgapur, and Ahmedabad) and 10 in Kerala itself (Thalassery, Palakkad, Mananthavady, Pulpally, Pathanamthitta, Pandalam,  Thiruvalla, Ernakulam, Ottapalam  and Koilandy).

Amrita Vidyalayam Peroor always tries to develop the extracurricular activities of students. Sports Day is one such wonderful opportunity for the students to exhibit their capabilities. Students were divided into categories. Students of class V to X had been brought to the main ground. They encouraged the participants very enthusiastically. Sports Day was inaugurated by the Sports Champion of the previous year, Vivek studying in STD X. He hoisted the School Flag. The Head Boy of the school led the Oath for the Captains for the all houses. The winners were awarded trophies, medals and certificates.

Amrita Vidyalayam, Peroor celebrated Children’s Day with much enthusiasm. The Chief Guest was Shri R.C Bose, an active social worker and magician. We also had a guest of Honor, Shri. Gopakumar, the father of a very talented student of our school, Devi Diya of Std V B. The function was inaugurated by Shri: R.Gopakumar who is the Area Manager of Tata Motors. The most attractive part of the function was the magic show of Shri R.C Bose. The students were overwhelmed with joy. He revealed some of the tips and tricks in magic. Geevarghese .G Johnson delivered a short speech on Children’s Day.

Amrita Vidyalayam Peroor celebrated ‘Keralappiravi’ of 2012. The celebration was inaugurated by Shri. Sasidharan, a well known poet. He emphasized on the relevance of ‘Mathrubhasha’ and recited some short poems for the children. The beloved Principal Bri.Sindhu teacher addressed the parents and the students. Hamda of Std II, delivered a short speech on ‘Keralappiravi’. Kripa.V.R of Std VIII B recited the poem ‘Ente Gurunathan’, deserved appreciation from the audience. The chief guest Shri. Sasidharan presented the best Jury Award to Devi Diya Std VI B which she has received from the Home Minister of Kerala for her excellent performance in Rope Dance

Gurupurnima in all Amrita Vidyalayam schools are celebrated with Mathrupuja – the formal worship of mother as God.  In Amrita Vidyalayam, Changanassery, Bri. Nishtamirta Chaithanya, the in-charge of the local M.A.Math inaugurated the function by lighting the traditional oil lamp.  The students did Mathrupuja, the worship of their biological mothers under the guidance of Bri. Nishtamritaji.  The students washed the feet of their mothers, anointed them with sandal paste and kumkum, put garland and did arathi.  The mothers’ in their turn blessed their kids by hugging and kissing them and by putting sweets in their mouths. The function inculcated in all the participants, the age old saying ‘Mata Pita Guru Daivam’ i.e., one’s mother, father and guru are equal to God.

Drug and alcohol abuse are serious problems that affect children of school-going age much more than in the past. In order to make each student aware of its ill- effects, our Amrita Vidyalayam organised a mass assembly. After prayers, the school took an oath to stay away from drugs and alcohol. It was heartening to see that each and every student joined hands in taking the oath and imbibing its spirit.

Bri. Pavithramrita Chaitanyaji, Coordinator of Amrita Vidyalayams, Smt. Vijayalakshmi Narendran, Academic Director of Amrita Vidyalayams, Ms. Sandhyaji, Sri Gopalakrishnan, PF Cell Coordinator and Sri Narendran visited our school on July 6^th. Vijayalakshmi Ma’am shared her vast experience with our teachers and gave an inspiring and enriching talk on ways to improve the academic standard of students.

Ms. Sandhyaji's class awakened the spirit of patriotism and instilled great reverence to our heritage in the teachers.

June 21st was declared as International Yoga Day by the United Nations General Assembly. According to this, the first International Yoga Day was observed all over the world on June 21st, 2015. On that day, our school organized International Yoga Day celebrations in the early hours of the morning according to CBSE directions.

The day started with prayer followed by a welcome speech by School Leader Sreelakshmi V.D. of class XII. After this, all the students chanted ‘Adityahridayam’ together, paying tribute to the Sun God. Chief Guest Sri Sunil Kumar, renowned Yoga Master and Vice President of Sevanjali Trust, Kodungallur, gave a speech conveying the importance of Yoga in our life. Guided by Sri Sunil Kumar, the students performed different yogasanas as a result of which they felt relaxed and happy. Devipriya T.S. of class XII proposed the vote of thanks.

On June 23rd, another session of yoga demonstration and a seminar on yoga was conducted in collaboration with Vivekananda Vedic Vision Centre, Kodungallur.
