To sum up my diet and exercise plan last week: I could have done better. It was one of those weeks when I avoided the scale. I looked down at the scale today, decided that the number was going to be bad - better not look - just try harder next week. I ignored my own warning (I always do) and was ecstatic (and confused) to see that I had dropped 4 more pounds. Perhaps my body really was tired and hungry (for carbs) like it had been telling me. Go figure. Two lessons I need to work on: (1) listen to my body and (2) be patient, weight loss takes time.

Get Real

I really liked the Things I’m Afraid to Tell You initiative that was spread around the blog-o-sphere by Jess from Make Under My Life and EZ from Creature Comforts. I think that it was a very positive way to deal with a major issue in the blogging realm. Instead of calling people out, a huge collection of bloggers took a step back, took a look at themselves, and did something POSITIVE to try to make a change within the blogging community.

There are some people in the blogging community who, on the other hand, are bringing up a very similar issue, but in not such a positive way.

The argument is that certain lifestyle bloggers always appear so perfect on their blogs that they make everyone else feel bad for not being so perfect. Although a little true, I think it’s also a little silly. Believe me, I have been known to bear some major insecurities for some really ridiculous reasons. Like one Christmas I bawled my eyes out because I couldn’t get the sugar cookies right. I literally thought I ruined Christmas. I can laugh about it now.

I guess there are some blogs that are meant to portray reality and some that are meant to be an escape from reality. Personally, I like the escape from reality blogs. I like seeing the pretty AFTER photos that inspire me to make the little corners of my life prettier. I don’t want to see massive piles of dirty laundry or the huge mess that was made while creating that pretty DIY – I can see all of that at my own place!

I know that those pretty lifestyle blogs aren’t 27/7 reality. I realize that bloggers clean their homes before a home tour. I do. I know that sometimes those bloggers occasionally wear 3 day old jeans and put their hair in ponytail. I do. And I can’t criticize them for not portraying realistic body types to the public because (1) those are their real bodies and (2) if I want more realistic body types in blogland then I’d better start setting the example by sharing more photos of myself.

I’m not saying I never get caught up in the perfectness of it all. Sometimes I do feel like I don’t measure up. Sometimes I have unrealistic expectations of myself. But it’s one of those silly moments of insecurity that passes when I remember that blogs aren’t 100% real life. It’s not any particular blogger’s fault that I have those moments of insecurity because nobody has the power to make me feel bad about myself. Only I have that power.

When a rep from Favor Days contacted me to see if I wanted to do a review of their website and products, I jumped at the chance. The site is easy to navigate and there are tons of cool favor ideas — but most importantly, I found their prices reasonable.

Their personalized products were my favorite so I choose the personalized wedding napkins knowing that my sister needed some for her reception in July. Other favorites are the personalized drink coasters, disposable cameras, and matchbook favors.

NO PEEKING

First things first. Leslie, if you are reading this, GO AWAY! Steer clear of my of my blog until AFTER the shower. ABSOLUTELY NO PEEKING. (Love you, Sissy!)

Now that that is out of the way, on to my blog post...

After a friend divulged her secret resource for getting die-cut cards printed (sorry, I can't share the resource with you), I designed invitations inspired by the ones in this post. I wanted to add some DIY touches as well so I added aqua envelope liners to kraft colored envelopes (both purchased from Chelsea Paper on Etsy).

I tied the invites to a piece of gold cardstock to give them more weight, and also because I wanted an excuse to incorporate baker's twine.

And here is the back-side of the invite (I purposely blurred out the phone numbers).

I also designed some pretty return address labels and hand addressed each envelope with a pretty light pink pen.

My sister has seen the invites, of course, but I wanted to get rid of her so I could show you something else I've been working on.

For the shower, I am planning a dessert and candy bar, complete with a lollipop tree. After scouring Etsy for lollipops, I decided that they were not in my budget...but my budget COULD include supplies to make my own. It turns out lollipops are really cheap to make! My first batch didn't turn out so great but after following this tutorial I feel like I'm ready to be a contestant on Sweet Genius.

The "tree" is actually a Styrofoam cone that I covered in ribbon. Tip: Be sure to use special Styrofoam glue because the regular kind eats Styrofoam!

To insert the lollipops, I simple took an X-Acto knife and made a tiny "X" where I wanted to insert each stick.

I found some fabric "scrapbook paper" at Michaels for the flag. I trimmed the fabric with a paper trimmer and used spray adhesive to attach the fabric to an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of cardstock so that I could run it through my printer for the "Love is sweet" lettering. Then I cut the fabric into a pennant shape and hot glued it to a paper stripey straw. The straw just sticks into the Styrofoam at the top of the cone. Really easy and visually appealing.

I've been eating my dinner out on my patio this week - plus I've been BBQing, taking photos, and even did a couple craft projects out there.

I was jonesing for some color-blocked planters after seeing this and this. I picked up a couple of plain terracotta pots at my local dollar store. Then I raided my acrylic paints for my favorite shades of the moment, including chalkboard paint. I painted the pots freehand using foam brushed (like these).

This is such an easy and inexpensive way to add color and personality to my patio. I think I've got my creative juices flowing again.

Food Truck Heaven

Darryl and I headed to Sacto MoFo a couple weekends ago to try some mobile food from local food trucks. The event was awesome but due to the crowds we ended up waiting 45+ minutes for our food in the heat and truck fumes, and needless to say, it left us a little cranky.

Since I've been following many of the local food trucks on Twitter and Facebook, I saw that several of them were going to be parked in Darryl's neck of the woods on Friday night. I suggested we meet up in the parking lot (on the way home from work) for a mini dinner date.

I was a little bit worried because I really wanted to stick to my diet this weekend, after splurging on drinks last weekend for Raise Pints to Raise Hope. I posted a comment on the Local Kine Shaved Ice Facebook page asking if they had any sugar free flavors. I mostly stay away from sugar substitutes but it's a nice way to treat myself once in awhile. To my surprise, not only was the answer "Yes" but they asked what my favorite flavors were and said those would be the sugar free flavors for the month. Talk about service!

When we arrived, I was disappointed to see that none of the vendors sold salads (other than the pasta variety) so we settled on gyros from Fuzion Eatz (their Rosemary's Burger is one of the best burgers I've ever eaten, btw). At the last minute, I asked if they could make me a salad by chance. The chef listed off a bunch of items he could put on it (chicken, roasted peppers, cucumber, feta) and I gladly accepted. Darryl ordered the Pedro Villa gyro.

My salad was SO delicious! I really felt like I was getting a treat. It was basically a gyro without the bread. Darryl said his gyro was outstanding as well.

Next we hit up Local Kine for some Hawaiian shaved ice. I got a rainbow of sugar free flavors: rootbeer, pineapple, and cherry. YUM! There was a little bit of an artificial taste, as there is with all sugar free foods, but it was still really good. The rootbeer was the best, you couldn't even tell it was sugar free.

I love supporting local establishments and these food trucks really aim to please! And when you are trying to eat healthy, never hesitate to ask for a special order - you may be surprised by how accommodating restaurants (and food trucks!) can be.

Things I'm afraid to tell you

I've been thinking about something lately. And then yesterday as I was catching up on all my favorite blogs, I noticed a couple of them (Sage & Berries and Creature Comforts) brought up just the topic I had been thinking about. Jess from Make Under My Life did a very brave thing - she posted the things she is afraid to tell her readers. On her blog. For everyone to read.

I've also been following Erin from Carosello (previously Sunshine & Carousels) who recently posted about Blogging, Self Confidence and Body Insecurities as she vowed to share more photos of herself on her blog. I admired her courage and love her outfit posts. She is a beautiful girl and it's so nice to see cute outfits on a body that is closer to my own.

Opps. I just let secret #1 out of the bag. More on that later.

Here's the thing: I haven't been blogging much lately for a few reasons. I've just been busy, not as good at remembering my camera, and I haven't had as much "crafty stuff" going on. I got into the habit of thinking I could only post the pretty & the perfect. It's a lot of pressure to share something pretty and perfect on a daily basis.

My blog is just a piece of me and a piece of my life. It's about holidays and parties and baking and happy things. But lately I feel like it's missing something. There are certain things that I omit from my blog, simply because I don't have a good photo, or don't think it's relevant, or because I simply don't want to talk about it. I guess it always will be that way, to some extent -- after all, I signed up for a Blogger account, not reality TV. But still, I think it would be nice to share more bits of my personal life - even if they are messy or poorly photographed. So I am accepting Ez's challenge to try to be more "real" and to start by posting the things I'm afraid to tell you.

So here it goes...

I'm not skinny. You probably guessed, but I never came right out and said it. I haven't been thin in years and every time I try, I let "life" get in the way. I work to please others so much that I don't take the time to take care of myself. I get so wrapped up in trying to finish projects and stage perfect pictures or plan the perfect party or craft show, etc. etc. and I always tell myself that I'll get healthy after that one thing is over and done with and I finally have the time. But something else always comes along.

I'm finally learning to say no. I have tons of ideas for businesses and groups and events that I'd love to pursue but I have to tell myself to slow down because none of those things can happen if I don't take care of myself.

I've lost 45 pounds and I'm not ~~always~~ usually so proud of that fact. I like who I am on the inside and even though I know that losing weight is going to make me healthier and more confident and allow me to be more active, a part of me feels like a hack because I should love myself the way I am. I am fine with people telling me I look great but please don't tell me how bad I was looking before or that "I look so cute NOW." I'm still the same person. I never hated myself, I liked who I was. At the same time, I have unrealistic expectations of myself. No matter how much I lose, I am disappointed in myself for not losing more. Sometimes I look in the mirror and I am happy with where my body is right now. You can start to see muscle tone again. I feel healthy. I remember that I actually do like exercise. It's not easy to allow myself to be proud of my accomplishments. But I'm trying.

I'm 33 and still don't feel like a grown up. I can't seem to shake the idea that I don't have to have all my ducks in a row in order to get married or start a family. I always feel like there is something in my life that I'm still "working on" and I can't move on to the next phase of my life just yet. I saw The Five Year Engagement recently, and besides being hilariously funny, the movie resonated with me. There is never going to be a perfect time. You just do it. As the sister in the movie says (in Elmo voice) "There is no perfect cookie, just pick one and take a bite!"

I left my boyfriend of 11 years in January of 2011 and moved into an apartment by myself. Although we are back together and have worked though most of our issues, I will never regret what I did. I had never lived on my own before and it is an experience I was meant to have. Now I know I can stand on my own two feet. I know that I am with him not because I am afraid to be without him but because I WANT to be with him. One of the biggest lessons I've learned is to ask for what you want. You can't blame the other person for ignoring your needs when they don't know what your needs are.

I suck at forgiving. I think I'm pretty lenient on the number of chances I give people. Cross me three times (sometimes more) and you're done (cut out of my life). I can be the ultimate ice queen. And I won't always tell you why either.

My day job isn't all that creative. I don't blog full time. I don't get to craft or design on a daily basis. Most days I get home and I don't even want to turn on my computer. And between work and the gym and family and friends and boyfriend time, I don't get a lot of opportunities to be creative anymore. BUT creativity and design and making will always be a huge part of who I am. If nothing else, I have blog-land to keep me feeling connected to those things until I have more time to actually pursue them.

I am a control freak. After reading other bloggers' Things I am afraid to tell you posts, I realize I am not the only one! I can be OCD about certain things. God help you if you touch my stuff because I'll know if it's been moved an inch. I rarely ask for other people's opinions because I know I'm just going to choose what I want anyway. I ~~sometimes~~ usually have the urge to re-arrange (or clean) other people's homes, although I refrain (most of the time). I sometimes zero in on tiny imperfections and have trouble seeing the whole picture.

Sometimes I'm rude without meaning to be. I may forget your name or to introduce you to my friend or I might forget to offer you a beverage -- but I swear it's not intentional. It's just that I can be a bit scatter brained, especially in social situations.

I'm not really the life of The Party. I am really just quiet and shy and awkward. Jaymi says her first impression of me was that I didn't like her. Not true at all! I am just quiet and awkward until I get to know you. My close friends think I am The Party though, and that's all that really matters.

Halfway through this post I had a mini panic attack and almost hit delete. But now that I am at the end, I feel kind of relieved.

All those pretty pictures are fun to look at but it's so easy to forget that nobody is perfect. Bloggers make mistakes and have faults and go through hard times, just like everybody. I'm going to make an effort to share more of my "real life" in between pretty posts because it's those un-perfect moments, those trials and tribulations, that make us the beautiful beings that we are.

I realized that it's been awhile since I've blogged and just wanted to give you an update of what I've been up to:

* Experimenting with flavored waters like cucumber-mint and citrus-mint.
I have also been drinking tons of lemon water, which is supposed to have numerous health benefits, but I also found that it helped me dramatically cut down on my coffee and diet soda consumption!

* Working out. Every day.
I think my body is getting used to the cross-training/elliptical machine so I just started working out on the stairmaster this week. It kicks butt! My second time on one, I was just wondering if anyone has ever fallen off, when I answered my own question. I had been going at a nice steady pace for 10+ minutes when out of no where the machine kicked into over-drive! I think this was a machine malfunction - at least that's my story and I am sticking to it! I didn't even have time to hit the STOP button and knew I was going to bail. I did so in the most un-graceful way possible and ended up for of sliding down the stairs while they continued to move! I left the gym not only embarrassed but with bruises covering a good 30% of my body! I look like a grape. BUT I am happy to report that I {cautiously} got back on the next day (not the same exact machine but a newer one at a different location). I've started using the weight machines a few days per week too.

* Experimenting with new, healthy recipes.
I made stuffed red peppers and a low-carb version of chile relleno. I tried shrimp salad on cucumber slides (not a big fan of cucumber though), grilled brussel sprouts (YUM), and zucchini chips (YUM).

Cassidy is the party

I went to the cutest baby shower this weekend, for Kristin of The Monster and Me. Cassidy did SUCH an amazing job (check out that cake)! I <3 having crafty friends.

I had plans to visit San Francisco with a special someone on Sunday but the weather wasn't the greatest so we went to the Sacramento Antique Faire instead. I forgot my phone so I don't have any photos to share. Hoping for some sunshine next weekend.

Adventures in Babysitting

This past weekend, I got to babysit a couple of the most adorable girls in the world, so that Jaymi and Tom could go have some fun for their anniversary. Audrey was a huge help with her little sister and Zoey has to be the happiest baby I have ever seen.

I know it's been a while since I've written. Remember how one of my "33 Things" was to get healthy? Well I've been on track for 4 weeks now and am very happy with my progress, despite the fact that my life is feeling a little like Groundhog Day, the movie: Work. Gym. Sleep. Work. Gym. Sleep. Repeat. Oh yes, that and being wrapped up in the Phenomenon that is The Hunger Games. Is anyone else addicted?

The weekend before last, I had a girls weekend with my sister in Walnut Creek. We visited Danville for a bit and I happened upon the cutest floral shop EVER, Twigss. After the visit, a little light bulb clicked in my head and an idea took form that I am super-excited about. I'm going to take my time on this, do some research, start out small. It really goes right along with the direction my blog has taken. How is that for a hint?!

I'll try to check in a little more often but if I don't, you know where I am (Work. Gym. Sleep. Repeat.)
