The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports recently ended a five-day working visit to the United Kingdom where he paid visits to several points of interest, including the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, the Department for Culture, Media and Sports and the Olympic Park the venue for the 2012 Olympic Games, and held a dialogue with Bruneian students in London. The visit was focused on Sports Excellence, Making the nation’s Cultural Treasures accessible to young people and job-creating Creative Industries.

Accompanying the minister as part of the Brunei delegation was Permanent Secretary Dato Paduka HjMohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar, High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to the United Kingdom Hj Mohd Aziyan Hj Abdullah, British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Rob Fenn and MCYS officials.

The Brunei party toured the newest facility at Cardiff Metropolitan University, the School of Management, where CMU hope Brunei’s future “Captains of Industry” will come to study. The Minister urged Bruneian students to “bring their UK networks home to Brunei” on completion of their studies, to kick-start the nation’s creative industries.

It was an exciting night for 100 loyal customers of Telekom Brunei Berhad (Telbru) as they were invited to the first screening of Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol at the Empire Hotel Cinema, Jerudong. The invited hundred were the lucky winners of TelBru’s “Movie Night 2011 with TelBru” competition.

Ristorante Buon Gusto opened its doors for business last weekend serving high end italian cuisine to an increasingly sophisticated market of Bruneian diners. Buon Gusto means “good flavour” in Italian and from the pre-opening menu tasting that we had a few weeks ago, the food is definitely going to be making an impression!

After weeks of nerve-wracking preparations, Cheenyca Ong proved that she has what it takes to emerge as the champion of the B-Mobile "Who’s Got Talent?" Season 3 talent competition.

The songtress, who went up against nine other finalists at the grand finale at The Airport Mall, Berakas last night walked away with a grand prize of $3,600, a trophy, $200 worth of Mr Baker vouchers, B-Mobile phone packages and a hotel stay sponsored by Ming Garden Hotel and Residences in Kota Kinabalu.

The first runner-up title was won by Never Quit Bboy (NQB) who first danced energetically to a remix of Katy Perry’s songs, followed by Felicia Luah who belly danced to the third place. Persistent Crew featuring urban dance styles was in fourth place.

The other finalists who worked hard and brought wonderful performances were Earvin Cabalquinto (Singer), Md Amal Fadzillah bin Abdullah (Dancer/ Singer), Nur Afiqah Hamizah (Singer), Melo Dramatic (Band), Catherine Abu Jahal (Singer) and Nazri the Magician.

"Who’s Got Talent" is an annual talent competition brought by B-Mobile as a means to bring out the hidden talents in Brunei and put them all in an emotion-packed competition.

The best vocal talent, won by Cheenyca Ong, would be sponsored a single production including full composition, recording, studio time, mixing, mastering and radio release courtesy of Projectunes.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted on 10 December 1948. The date has since served to mark Human Rights Day worldwide. The Universal Declaration is thus the most translated document – indeed, the most "universal" one in the world.

The Chevening Scholarship – Brunei programme for the academic year of 2012/13 is now open for applications. The programme funds full-time postgraduate study for one-year course at a UK university.

Applications are accepted in any discipline in line with the socio-economic development of Brunei, which include, but are not exclusive to Knowledge Economy and Economic Diversification-related studies; International Relations; Politics; Human Rights; Good Governance; Renewable Energy; Climate Change and Business and Islamic Finance.

The scholarship is not applicable for PhDs, undergraduate studies or professional courses (e.g. ACCA, RIBA, ICSA, Bar Vocational courses etc).

Eligibility requirements:

• Bruneian citizen or permanent resident
• Good honours degree
• Working experience at least 2 years
• Proof of professional achievements
• Fluent English (most UK Higher Education institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission into postgraduate courses).

Candidate is expected to show a commitment to return to Brunei, where they will contribute to the country’s development using the new skills and knowledge acquired during their stay in the UK.

• Academic fees (with the exception of business school programmes, where the fees element of the scholarship is capped at £12,000)

Mandatory online payment for UK visas announced

From 16^th January 2012 all UK visa applicants in Brunei will be required to pay for their visa online as part of the online application process using either a Visa or MasterCard. In addition to credit cards, this includes debit cards and pre-paid cards, bearing the Visa and MasterCard logos. Other methods of payment will not be accepted from this date.

Once customers have applied and paid for their visa online they will still need to visit the British High Commission to submit their documents and provide their biometrics (fingerprints and digital photograph). Appointments to attend the British High Commission should be booked online when completing the online application form.

The integration of payment into the online system will provide a more streamlined visa application process for customers and is part of a wider move to allow almost all of our customers to apply and pay for their visas online by 2013/14.

Brunei’s biggest and first 48-hour event organised by Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru) kicked off on December 2nd and ended today at 3.00pm at the Jerudong Park (JPCC) Amphitheatre in Jerudong.

The winners of Let’s Trek Challenge were team number 313, consisting of Mohd Danny bin Aimi, Harrisman Ashady and Mohammad Akif. The winners drove home a Daihatsu Terios 4WD sponsored by GHK Motors Sdn Bhd.

With a total of almost 200 teams, three trekkers in each team, drove for the duration of 48 hours in search of a series of clues and challenges in all the four districts – Brunei Muara, Tutong, Temburong and Kuala Belait.

In the challenge, the trekkers must cover all Telecom Business Centres or “camp site” areas in the four districts and strive to answer all questions and collect the highest points possible in order to win. Apart from the main questions, trekkers can also collect extra bonus points from other game challenges provided throughout the 48 hours challenge.

After planning and waiting since Pesta Blogger 2009, this year ON|OFF / Pesta Blogger 2011 was finally able to invite fellow bloggers from the South East Asia region. With full support from US Embassy Jakarta, 9 bloggers were invited including myself.

Apart from me, there were bloggers from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Phillippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. See their profiles here. During our stay in Jakarta, we shared info about the digital and social media landscape in our countries, including our experience and insight related to blogging and social media.

There was a huge turnout of participants for the event and I must admit I was a little overwhelmed by the crowd and the whole carnival like atmosphere. There were booths put up by blogger groups from all over Indonesia and also of course, the US mission to ASEAN.

Congratulations to the organizing team and the sponsors for an event well executed! Looking forward to the next one!

Following with Telekom Brunei Berhad‘s (TelBru) annual ‘Let’s’ Campaign, this years‘ biggest customer event is TelBru “Let’s Trek, and the Explorers of Unseen Treasures“ which will kick off on Friday, 2nd December and finishes on Sunday, 4th December. According to officials from TelBru, this will be the first 48-hour race in Brunei from 3:00PM on Friday to 3:00PM on Sunday. The race will be starting and finishing off at the Jerudong Park Amphitheatre.

Up to date, there are over 200 teams consisting of three trekkers each team registering for the event. In order to prepare the teams for the 48-hour race and hype up the excitement for the event, TelBru has invited all trekkers to attend an official briefing for the event. The teams were divided into two sessions, morning and afternoon sessions in which both the sessions were held today at Dewan Amar Pahlawan, Ministry of Communications.

For this year, the three main concepts of Let’s Trek event are to promote local products, to explore the unseen sceneries of Brunei and to create awareness for Brunei’s tropical rainforest and go green initiative.

During the briefing, trekkers were briefed on the game information, rules and regulations and the game flow of the race by TelBru officials. Also present during the briefing were officials from Jabatan Belia of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports to show the safety equipments and representatives from Redbull to brief the trekkers on the challenge games for the actual event.

A total of 30 prizes worth more than BND$40,000.00 are up for grabs to the first 30 teams to score the highest points in the race. The grand prize winner will bring home a Daihatsu Terios 4WD sponsored by GHK Motors Sdn Bhd, while the second prize winner will be treated to a 5 day and 4 night package to Gold Coast, Australia for three person, inclusive of air ticket, accommodation and transportation. Meanwhile, the third prize for the race will win a 5 day and 4 night’s package to an Auckland city tour in New Zealand for three person, inclusive of air ticket, accommodation and transportation.

Fourth prize winners will enjoy a 4 day and 3 night trip to Shenzhen Safari in China for three person, inclusive of air ticket, accommodation and transportation. The last main prize for the fifth winner will be treated to a 3 day and 2 night package to a Night Safari and Universal Studio in Singapore for three person, inclusive of air ticket, accommodation and transportation.

Apart from the race event, members of the public are also invited to join the fun during the two days at the JPCC Amphitheatre as they will be other side activities. Indoor activities will be participating KNK Partners (Brunei Tourism), Privilege Card F&B Merchants, Merchants Games & Activities, Mini Games and more. Outdoor activities included will be GHK Motor Show, Horse Riding, Archery, Zorb Ball and Bouncers.

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam Berhad (BIBD) recently held a media appreciation night to express its gratitude to members of the media at the Royal Brunei Recreational Club. “It is a good opportunity for the management and staff of BIBD to get to know the media in Brunei in an informal outing session and at the same time thank them personally for their continuous support.” The night kicked off with welcoming remarks by the Managing Director of BIBD, Javed Ahmad. Although an acquired taste with its bold and spicy flavours, Korean cuisine is slowly garnering a following in Brunei. To date there are probably a handful of Korean restaurants in town.A couple of nights ago, da missus and I checked out this new Korean restaurant called Silla which just opened down the road from our house.

For those of you familiar with the Jangsak area, Silla is located where JS Big Prawn Noodles used to be. From the outside it looks like the new owners put in a lot of resources into the renovations. It looks totally different in a good way. A lot more inviting with dark timber framed windows and timber flooring as well. The ambience is very good with tasteful interior deco in a Korean theme. There are 3 private rooms for those who want to have a private dinner function.

The menu is pretty standard with typical Korean favourites like Kimchi Jigae, Bibimbap, Galbi Jim, Bulgogi and many others. The side dishes which are typical served with the main meal included favourites like Kimchi of course, but there were two different types. The typical red chill one and a white no-chili variety which was quite nice really.

Since there were only two of us, we only tried managed to try the galbi jim and kimchi jiggae. The galbi jim comes in a  large serve only (good for two or three people) at B$30.00 per serve. It was nice and tender even though damissus said the ribs tasted “frozen”. I found it quite good. The kimchi jiggae had a distinctive flavour which we never tasted in other kimchi stews. I can’t place the flavour but its darn good!

Some folks have mentioned that service is a little slow, but that night it was pretty snappy, so I guess its inconsistent experience. Do give it a go and let me know what you think!

This year’s theme for HSBC’s Media Appreciation Night is RETRO, and this includes mod, disco, flower power, and funky pop. I chose to go as a hippie and just as well cos I blended in well with quite a number of other media folks who chose to turn up in hippie gear as well!

The night began with a welcoming speech by Vincent Ho, CEO of HSBC Brunei. And then, the festivities began! The organising team put together some pretty awesome games for us including one where we had to sketch a monster with characters from the 60′s, 70′s, and 80′s, then create a prototype of it using PlayDoh, and finally dress up one of the team members as the monster!

All in all a tiring but enjoyable evening among friends! Thank you HSBC Brunei for the invite and I look forward to the next one!

This celebration is another effort of PWM to bring all community in Brunei to come together and to have better understanding of another culture. Deepavali has become an occasion for social togetherness, both within the Malaysian community, Bruneians and friends of all races in Brunei. This evening’s occasion is indeed a special way in which we come together as a multi-ethnic community to celebrate this festival of lights and to honour all Indians who celebrate Deepavali in a truly 1Malaysia concept.

Deepavali falls on the one new moon night between mid-October and mid-November. Deepavali is celebrated for five days according to the lunisolar Calendar, however these days we only celebrate or one or two days.

The ASEAN Blogger Conference is currently happening in Nusa Dua Bali and Brunei Darussalam is being represented by our very own GeekinWhite. Unfortunately, yours truly was unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances. Wishing Marul all the best at the conference. SocMedBN reprezent!

In an effort to increase public awareness and community outreach establishment of an ASEAN Community by 2015, Indonesia as Chairman of ASEAN cooperation with the ASEAN Community Blogger (Blogger Community ASEAN) Indonesia Chapter will host the ASEAN Blogger Conference titled “The New ASEAN and Its Cooperation with Dialogue Partners” at the Museum Pasifika , Nusa Dua, Bali on 16-17 November 2011.

ASEAN Blogger Conference will be attended by approximately 200 participants from bloggers 10 representatives of ASEAN member countries and representatives throughout the Community Blogger Indonesia .

ASEAN Blogger Conference 2011 is expected to be one of the forum which is a participation, awareness and a sense of community on the future of ASEAN. Through this activity the participants are expected to brainstorm ideas on the implementation of the ASEAN Charter to ASEAN community building in 2015 that people oriented and people driven.

Rapid development in ASEAN cooperation has witnessed together, especially since the enactment of the Charter in 2008, one of which is intended for the establishment of ASEAN Community in 2015 by 3 (three) pillars as contained in Cha-am Hua Hin Declaration on the Road Map for the ASEAN Community , namely the ASEAN Political-Security Community , ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Socio-Culture Community .

In organizing the first meeting of ASEAN Blogger Conference will discuss the development of online social media utilization in ASEAN member countries and the steps that can be done by the bloggers ASEAN to support the achievement of the ASEAN Community in 2015 through the active role of communities in their respective countries.

Blogger ASEAN Community (ABC) was initiated by the bloggers in various cities in Indonesia at the time of ASEAN’s Foreign Ministry held a socialization in various cities in Indonesia. The bloggers in this country wants is a forum of ASEAN is not only the elitist, diplomats and government alone, but also the relationship and communication between people.

ABC Chapter Indonesia inaugurated by Foreign Ministry Director General of ASEAN Cooperation Djauhari Oratmangun May 10, 2011, and with representatives of other bloggers put a signature on the Declaration of May 11, 2011.

Blogger Indonesia expects jointly both countries are already advanced in the use of social media, such as Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore with Indonesia, as well as in Myanmar, Vietnam or Laos and Cambodia, the bloggers in ASEAN will establish a branch in each country .

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his speech at the opening session to the 44th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Bali in July 2011 pertaining to the idea of the establishment of ASEAN Community Blogger. President Yudhoyono welcomed the establishment of ASEAN Community Blogger which he said was an innovative idea.

Blogger ASEAN Community recognized the President has an important role in encouraging the process of formation of the ASEAN Community by 2015.
According to the President, the establishment of relations between the peoples in Southeast Asia became the biggest task that ASEAN is an organization’s most successful regional cooperation after the EU and the ASEAN to the 21st century it must be dynamic and relevant. To be dynamic and relevant, ASEAN should focus on people ( people-centered ) and driven by its people ( people-driven ).

Unlike the four decades ago when ASEAN was founded, now the countries in Southeast Asia to face reality when the frequency and intensity of deep contacts among people in 10 countries of ASEAN-through cable television, email, twitter, faceboo k-has been far beyond the contact between Government officials. No government in the world who has the answer to this new trend. Similarly, ASEAN, said the president.

Therefore, ASEAN must act quickly, through creative measures and with an open mind in the package the power of this technology in order to encourage contacts between the peoples of Southeast Asia.

The President also considered that the closeness of the contacts between the people in ASEAN countries is important in developing a creative diplomatic relations.

Today is World Diabetes Day. I am a diabetic and as part of WDD, I am taking the initiative to share as much information as possible about diabetes as possible for the next week or so.

Most of the info will be stuff that I’ve gathered over the years but I still find useful as reminders for myself on what I need to do to keep my diabetes in check.

Today’s feature is about blood sugar levels. This is the most critical benchmark for diabetics. It is so easy to lose focus and suddenly find my blood sugar level sky high.

It’s times like these when I need a jolt to remind me of my condition and to “keep on the wagon”. How about you? How do you keep the discipline and stay on the blood sugar control wagon?

What is the blood sugar level?

The blood sugar level is the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. It is also known as plasma glucose level. It is expressed as millimoles per litre (mmol/l).

Normally blood glucose levels stay within narrow limits throughout the day: 4 to 8mmol/l. But they are higher after meals and usually lowest in the morning.

In diabetes the blood sugar level moves outside these limits until treated. Even with good control of diabetes, the blood sugar level will still at times drift outside this normal range.

Why control blood sugar levels?

When very high levels of blood glucose are present for years, it leads to damage of the small blood vessels.

This in turn increases your risk of developing late-stage diabetes complications including:

• retinopathy (eye disease)
• nephropathy (kidney disease)
• neuropathy (nerve disease)
• cardiovascular disease, such as heart attack, hypertension, heart failure, stroke and problems caused by poor circulation, eg gangrene in the worst cases.

 With Type 1 diabetes, these complications may start to appear 10 to 15 years after diagnosis.

They frequently appear less than 10 years after diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, because this type of diabetes is often present for years before it is recognised.

By keeping the blood sugar level stable, you significantly reduce your risk of these complications.

How can I measure blood sugar levels?

You can learn to measure blood sugar levels simply and quickly with a home blood glucose level testing kit. All kits have at least two things: a measuring device and a strip.

To check your blood sugar level, put a small amount of blood on the strip. Now place the strip into the device. After about 30 seconds it will display the blood glucose level.

The best way to take a blood sample is by pricking your finger with a sharp lancet that’s designed to penetrate the skin only as far as needed to draw a drop of blood.

What should glucose levels be?

The ideal values are:

• 4 to 7mmol/l before meals
• less than 10mmol/l 90 minutes after a meal
• around 8mmol/l at bedtime.

How often should blood glucose levels be measured?

It depends on your lifestyle – the needs of someone with diabetes who’s also a PE instructor are quite different to someone who sits at a computer all day.

If you use insulin

In broad terms, people who have Type 1 diabetes should measure their blood sugar levels daily before meals. Some days one or two tests can be done, while on others four or five might be needed.

Measuring blood sugar levels in the morning before any food gives an indication of the amount of insulin needed overnight.

If you have Type 2 diabetes that’s being treated with insulin, you should also follow this schedule.

If you take oral treatments

If your diabetes is treated with tablets or a special diet (Type 2), you should measure your blood glucose levels once or twice a week – either before meals or 90 minutes after a meal.

You should also do a 24-hour profile once or twice a month. This means measuring glucose levels before each meal.

Not everyone with Type 2 diabetes needs to carry out regular blood glucose checks.

For elderly people and those with other medical problems, it’s often enough to check the urine for glucose – usually before breakfast and the evening meal.

This is because while good control of diabetes is important, cardiovascular complications (heart attacks, stroke, angina) are the main cause of serious illness and death in people with this type of diabetes.

So people with Type 2 diabetes will benefit from tackling the factors that contribute to their cardiovascular risk by:

• controlling blood pressure more rigorously
• lowering cholesterol levels with medication
• increasing or starting exercise
• stopping smoking.

Blood glucose levels at bedtime

The blood sugar level at bedtime should be between 7 and 10 mmol/l.

If blood glucose is very low or very high at bedtime, you may need to adjust your food intake or insulin dose. Make sure you discuss this with your doctor.

At what other times should blood glucose levels be measured?

Blood glucose should be measured any time you feel unwell or think your blood sugar level is too high or low.

If you have Type 1 diabetes and have more than 20mmol/l of glucose in your blood, you should use a urine strip to check for the presence of ketones.

One of the blood glucose meters available also allows you to check your blood for ketones.

If ketone bodies are present in your urine or blood, it’s a warning sign of diabetic acidosis. If this is the case, you should consult your doctor immediately.

The first youth-led leadership forum, targeting Brunei’s Next generation – Convergence, took place at the BMW Showroom in Beribi Industrial Area last night, attended by over 100 invited guests ranging from students, fresh-graduates, entrepreneurs, visionary executives, innovators and members from the Local creative industry.

The forum, the first of its kind to be held here, aimed to “inspire, challenge and motivate” its participants with a dinner dialogue led by three influential individuals, the Special Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, Nor Ali Yusop; Former Deputy Minister of Industry and Resources who is now a local entrepreneur with interests across a number of industries, Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah Hj Abd Wahab; and Chief Executive Officer and Head of Consumer Banking for Standard Chartered Bank Brunei, Lai Pei-Si.

The theme of the Convergence Forum – ‘From Success to Significance’, saw the three panellists speak on various topics including a topic worth to ponder upon – ‘Stepping out of your comfort zone: What have you got to lose?’. The panellists each had a story to share regarding the risks they have taken either personally or professionally to show participants that there are some risks worth taking.

Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah during the forum shared his story from his early beginnings of his career, until his windfall of holding various high-ranking posts in multi-disciplinary areas both in the private sector and the government. He was the Managing Director for Brunei Shell, and his last Government Post was as a Deputy Minister and now, he thrives as a local entrepreneur. He shared many interesting insights and views about his life within his career span, and on how he had to overcome and endure challenges during the course and how it has made him who he is today.

Lai Pei-Si, on the other hand, had also had a few interesting stories to share. Being in the banking industry for more than 10 years and having to move to Brunei from Singapore just early this year with her family, participants were curious on how the successful mother can balance her work, life and family.

Nor Ali, who lost his vision a number of years ago also shared an inspiring story of how a visually impaired person can contribute to the society and also succeed. He also shared on the challenges he had to overcome after being diagnosed as visually impaired and how he adapted to it until today.

The floor was also open to all participants to ask questions at the end of the forum.

Hosted by the people behind, ProjekBrunei.com with Delwin Keasberry in his capacity as the organiser of Convergence, the event last night proved to be a very valuable experience for all the participants.

One of the participants, Ak Danny Pg Tajuddin, Employee Banking Relationship Manager at Standard Chartered Bank said, “This is a great event. Well done to Delwin and his team for this great job! It is inspiring and at the same time motivating to listen to the stories shared by the distinguished speakers who come from different backgrounds. Facts:

• Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death in diabetes, accounting for some 50% of all diabetes fatalities, and much disability.
• On average, people with type 2 diabetes will die 5-10 years before people without diabetes and most of this excess mortality is due to cardiovascular disease.
• People with type 2 diabetes are over twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke as people who do not have diabetes. Indeed, people with type 2 diabetes are as likely to suffer a heart attack as people without diabetes who have already had a heart attack.
• Strokes occur twice as often in people with diabetes and hypertension as in those with hypertension alone.
• People with diabetes are 15-40 times more likely to have a lower limb amputation compared to the general population.
• People with diabetes have two to four times the risk of developing atherosclerosis compared to people without diabetes.
• The treatment of cardiovascular disease accounts for a large part of the huge healthcare costs attributable to type 2 diabetes, that have been estimated to account for 10-12% of European health care expenditure.
• Part of the cardiovascular risk associated with IGT and diabetes is undoubtedly due to their association with other cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, high LDL-cholesterol and low HDL-cholesterol and smoking.
• Lifestyle changes that improve blood glucose control e.g. weight loss, dietary changes and increased physical activity are also likely to improve these other cardiovascular risk factors.

It is well established that diabetes is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), a term that refers to disease of the heart and circulatory system. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are closely linked to CVD and it is the main cause of death in people with diabetes.

Major clinical manifestations of CVD

These can be divided into three groups:

1.  Those affecting the heart and coronary circulation (coronary heart disease – CHD)

A thickening of the walls in the coronary arteries or the occurrence of a blood clot in the coronary arteries will prevent blood reaching the heart, causing strain on the heart, which can ultimately lead to angina, myocardial infarction, or sudden death.

2. Those affecting the brain and cerebral circulation

An interruption of blood supply to the brain (as a result of cerebral haemorrhage or a cerebral thrombosis) will lead to a stroke, a sudden loss of function of part of the brain resulting in death (infarction) of an area within the brain.

3. Those affecting the lower limbs and feet (peripheral vascular disease)

Peripheral vascular disease often results from a narrowing of the vessels that carry blood to leg and arm muscles. The loss of blood supply can cause gangrene (death of tissue which can ultimately lead to amputation) and intermittent claudication.

Facts

• Diabetic kidney disease occurs in approximately one third of all people with diabetes.
• Kidney failure typically occurs after 20-30 years of diabetes. 
• In type 2 diabetes, the risk of developing cardiovascular disease is 2-3 times higher in someone with microalbuminuria compared to a person with normal albumin excretion.
• Type 2 diabetes has become the most frequent condition in people with kidney failure in countries of the Western world. The reported incidence varies between 30% and 40% in countries such as Germany and the USA.
• Stopping smoking can reduce the risk of disease progression by 30%.

What is kidney disease?

Diabetic kidney disease (also known as diabetic nephropathy) is a chronic, progressive disease characterized by:

• increasing amounts of protein albumin in the urine (known as microalbuminuria)
• rising blood pressure
• failing kidney function

The deterioration that characterizes diabetic kidney disease takes place in and around the glomeruli, the blood filtering units of the kidneys.

In diabetes, blood glucose levels in the blood affect small blood vessels in the whole body. These vessels can become damaged and stop working properly. When small vessels in the kidneys are damaged, the filtering process is affected. Waste builds up in the blood whereas other valuable substances such as proteins “leak” out into the urine.

If this progresses, kidney disease can ultimately lead to kidney failure (also called end-stage renal disease (ESRD)), which if left untreated results in death.

Prevention

Diabetic kidney disease can be prevented or slowed down by controlling the following:

Blood pressure

• Antihypertensive drugs (drugs used to lower blood pressure) can help slow the progress of diabetic kidney disease significantly.
• ACE (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme) inhibitors have proven effective in preventing the progression of kidney disease to its later stages.
• Diuretics, Beta-blockers, and Calcium channel blockers may all enhance blood pressure control in people with diabetes and help stop or slow the onset of diabetic kidney disease.

Diet

• Reduced amounts of proteins help lower blood pressure and reduce the rate of fall of the glomerular filtration rate.

Non-Smoking 

• Stopping smoking can prove more effective than any pharmaceutical intervention. It significantly reduces the risk of disease progression.

Dyslipidaemia (abnormal amounts of lipids or fats in the blood)

• Cholesterol lowering agents (statins), which treat dyslipidaemia decrease the level of protenuria and preserve the kidney filtration function in people with chronic diabetic kidney disease.

Other factors

• Tight glucose control
• Weight loss
• Exercise
• Reduction of alcohol intake

Treatment

The main treatment options for a person with end-stage kidney disease are:

Haemodialysis: the person is attached to a blood dialysis machine for several hours 2 or 3 times a week. The blood circulates around an artificial filter in the dialysis machine, so that waste products and toxins are removed and the ‘cleaned’ blood can be returned to the person.

Transplantation: A healthy kidney is transferred from one person to another. However, a transplanted organ will immediately be recognized as ‘foreign’ by the body’s immune system, leading to organ rejection and failure. Therefore, large doses of drugs that suppress the body’s immune system (immunosuppressants) are prescribed.

These treatments, however, are very expensive: dialysis costs around €30,000 per person per year, while a kidney transplant costs approximately €12,000 for the first year and then €5,000 per year thereafter.

As an initiative of Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru) to celebrate Hari Raya Aidil Adha, TelBru organized a Korban or ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ ceremony. The ceremony was held at TelBru Tutong branch this afternoon.

Among the activities implemented during the ceremony were the recital of ‘takbir’ hari raya, the distribution of the sacrificial meat to the participants, the poor, orphans and invitees. The distributions were presented by TelBru Acting Chief Executive Officer, Haji Umar Ali bin Haji Abdullah.

To bless the ceremony, a recital of doa selamat was led by one of TelBru staff, Haji Erifin bin Haji Mohd Yusof. Also present at the ceremony were special guests from Tutong district and  staff of TelBru.

Aidil Adha is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide as a commemoration of Ibrahim‘s (Abraham‘s) willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail for Allah. It is one of two Qur’anic Eid festivals that Muslims celebrate.

Aidil Adha is the 10th day of the month of Zul Hijjah of the lunar Islamic calendar. The festivities sometimes last for two to three days more depending on the country. It is the day after the pilgrims in Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide, descend from Mount Arafat.

Muslims who can afford to do so sacrifice their best domestic animals (usually sheep, but also camels, cows, and goats) as a symbol of Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) sacrifice. The sacrificed animals, called korban, have to meet certain age and quality standards or else the animal is considered an unacceptable sacrifice. Generally, these must be at least a year old, and weigh 165 kg.

At the time of sacrifice, Allah’s name is recited along with the offering statement and a supplication as Muhammad said. According to the Qur’an a large portion of the meat has to be given towards the poor and hungry people so they can all join in the feast which is held on Aidil Adha. The remainder is cooked for the family celebration meal in which relatives and friends are invited to share.

His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah yesterday expressed high hopes for the national contingent to be able to borne their responsibilities and duties as professional athletes at the 26th SEA Games, by emphasising on the importance of discipline, commitment and confidence in the biennial multi-sport event.

HRH in his capacity as President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council cum the guest-of-honour during the handing-over ceremony of the national flag for the 26th SEA Games at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium yesterday self-assured that with high determination and morale, the Brunei athletes will be able to bring home more medals this year.

“I am confident that through the intensive training and exercises undertaken by the athletes overseas will be leveraged and adapted during the competitions,” HRH said, before adding “I am also full of hopes the athletes will not be weak-willed and short minded, but instead driven to be more focussed in professional ways in achieving glory.”

In an interview with the Sunday Bulletin, HRH reminded that “skills and preparedness alone will not bring back the medals if they are not performed with high confidence and courage”.

In addition, he instead cautioned that the medals obtained must be worthy of their efforts, as to avoid disputes that may question their victories.

“It is understood that the national contingent has made plans and preparations to ensure that all athletes are equipped to compete, and I hope those preparations would be of great assistance for them to strive further throughout the competitions,” HRH added.

Accompanying HRH during the ceremony was YAM Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul `Aleem.

The national flag was handed over by HRH to Hj Abdul Malik bin Hj Mohammad, the chef-de-mission of the national contingent to the 26th SEA Games.

The ceremony also saw the presentation of Brunei’s contingent sports attire sponsored by Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru), and present to hand it over was Awg Hj Umar Ali bin Hj Abdullah, Acting CEO of TelBru to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Hazair bin Hj Abdullah.

The sports attire was later presented to the Brunei’s chef-de-mission to the 26th SEA games and Secretary-General of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council Hj Zuraimi Hj Abdul Sani.

The national contingent will be competing in 11 sports – cue sports, petanque, sepak takraw, ten pin bowling, soccer, fencing, karatedo, pencak silat, kempo, taekwondo and wushu. The national contingent is set to arrive at Palembang-Jakarta, Indonesia on November 8.

BRUNEI’s second run of the Technology Expo (TechXpo) 2011 opened yesterday as the Sultanate’s premier destination for technology-based attractions for consumers and investors at the International Convention Centre.

Gathering 60 companies from both local and foreign countries, the TechXpo offers visitors and participants a wide range of IT and IT-related products and services ranging from educational tools, automation systems, healthcare products and domestic appliances.

Yesterday’s ceremony was attended by the Minister of Communications Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar as the guest of honour who officiated the opening with the presences of Pg Abd Ghani Pg Hj Metussin as chairman of InfoCom Federation Brunei (IFB).

The minister and chairman toured the expo’s main showcase area which housed a number of booths where the exhibitors were granted the opportunity to present their latest innovations and developments that are available and being used in the Sultanate.

The TechXpo will run until Sunday, from 10am to 10pm. According to the press release, the expo is equipped with an array of activities and attractions that promises a fun-filled experience to fascinate all ages.

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday underscored the need for everyone to have their own ‘identity’ while at the same time urging them, particularly the undergraduates, to think and act wisely in order to glorify their identity.

His Majesty also stressed on the importance of maintaining high accuracy of the Quran in accordance with the required standard.

The monarch, in particular, said there has been much talk on "identity", but not everyone is consistent in improving it. However, there are those who even tarnish it, though the importance of upholding personal identity continues to be highlighted.

His Majesty delivered a titah at the launching of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) Mushaf Al-Quran that took place at the International Convention Centre yesterday.

His Majesty highly praised the efforts that have been undertaken in writing the ‘Mushaf’ , as it will be written by a local and become an "added-value" to the history of al-Quran writing in the Sultanate.

"It certainly will give Brunei a good image and qualify it in line with other Islamic countries, which have produced their own ‘Mushaf’ writings," His Majesty added.

BRITISH High Commissioner Rob Fenn commented that Brunei could have a “distinctive voice” in the creative industry during his speech yesterday at the official opening of the Jerudong International School (JIS) “Eleventh Art and Design Technology”.

Held at the new Arts Centre, the High Commissioner stated that some Bruneians should not worry about the conflict between the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) and expressing oneself through art because there is “no such conflict”.

“I think some students would find their voices in JIS especially in these facilities will go on to be part of the creative industries in Brunei,” said Fenn.

In his speech he explained that in the globalised world, it was not about “beating Hollywood in its own game but rather finding a distinctive voice” especially through today’s means of communication such as the Internet, “Brunei’s distinctive voice would definitely be heard”.

“For Brunei in investing in this type of facility is fantastic, I think the country is on its way in finding its voice,” said Fenn.

As guest of honour, the British High Commissioner witnessed the opening of the exhibition which includes a variety of works such as paintings, prints, drawings, ceramic work, food creativity and three dimensional designs such as lamps and items of furniture.

The exhibits reflect some of the academic year’s work by students from every year level which includes students aged as young as four years old to students 18 years of age. The exhibition celebrates the achievements of the young artists and designers from JIS.

The exhibition would remain on display for the public until October 21, 2011 from 12 pm to 4 pm, daily. Also present at the exhibition was JIS principal, Andrew Fowler-Watt and Head of Design and Technology Justin Harris.

Facilities include a 250-seat studio theatre, a large dance studio, an exhibition gallery, an orchestra rehearsal studio and many additional music, drama and dance studios.

Bandar Seri Begawan – The first-ever social media conference in Brunei Darussalam ‘Brunei Online, Social Media: There’s Where It’s @’ was successfully held yesterday at Radisson Hotel in the capital.

Nearly 80 social media aficionados joined the conversation at the informal gathering. Among them were renowned entrepreneurs and individuals who apply the tools of social media in their lives – whether it is for business or as an individual member of society.

The conference commenced with a welcoming remark by Azhani Daniel of emmagoodegg.com who spoke on the importance of using social media platform such as Facebook, Twitter, Google or Youtube to communicate with other users or clients.

Shortly after, a presentation on ‘Backbone for Social Media’ was delivered by General Manager, Product Development of TelBru, Mr Lim Ming Soon. He spoke on boosting the tools and services that Telbru has provided for its customers to abide with the growing popularity of social media application and practices.

This was followed by the first session of the conference dubbed ‘Dude, Where’s My Traffic?’ by key social media personalities namely, Rano Iskandar of ranoadidas.com, Delwin Keasberry of projekbrunei.com and Dinoza Mahruf of Breeze Magazine, Sabah, Malaysia.

Although all three key personalities come from different background, using various social media application, they all share one common ideology, the utilisation of social media for the betterment of their practise.

Breeze magazine has attracted more than 10,000 readers from 300 after migrating from its conventional website to creating a ‘Page’ in Facebook.

Similar cases transpire with ranoadidas.corn and projekbrunei after using social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter.

The increase was also the result of “creative” posts by the social media personalities. “It’s all based on the content, editing or the photos posts at my blog,” said the founder of ranoadidas.com.

He added that posts should be “positively innovative” and “not damaging” to the individual.

This session was moderated by Azhani Daniel of emmagoodegg.com.

The rejuvenating first session was then followed by an interesting topic in session two, ’140 characters or Less: Why Join the Twitter Conversation?’ delivered by Dato Timothy Ong, Chairman of Asia Inc Forum and a recent Twitter user, which was moderated by Awg Hj Mohd Rozan bin Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yunos, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the man behind the popular blog, bruneiresources.com.

In the final session, Keeran Janin, Founder of MeSixty and Simon Soo, Director of Mint progress spoke on the topic ‘From Idea to Enterprise: What Does it Take?’.

The discussion was moderated by Tom Bonius, Social Media Coordinator, Rapidea Solutions, Sabah, Malaysia.

Guests were able to post their questions online at real-time a tool called PigeonHole. Organisers believed that the tool enabled conference attendees to post and vote for questions by using their mobile web device.

Muhammad Reeda Hj Malik, TelBru’s General Manager for Media and Communications said that TelBru is proud to be the main sponsor for the inaugural social media conference in the country.

“We realise the importance of social media and the role that it plays in today’s social and business environment.

Overall, it was a very engaging and educational conference and I hope that participants gained a deeper understanding of social media and how they can apply it for a greater purpose,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rano Iskandar, one of the people behind in the event said he was happy with the good response from the public for the first-ever Social Media conference.

He revealed that there will be more similar events in the future.

“We are planning to invite more people and relevant authorities in order to see how they can leverage social media in a positive way.

After all, our role here is for the community and individual in the public and private sector to take notice of the shift from social media in the country and regionally.”

Dato Timothy Ong will be speaking on “Why Join the Twitter Conversation?” He is a leading Brunei businessman who is the founder and Chairman of Asia Inc Forum, a leading regional platform for high level policy dialogue.

He is Chairman of Hotel Associates – owner of the Radisson Hotel Brunei, Deputy Chairman of National Insurance Company, Brunei’s leading general insurer and a board member of Baiduri Bank, a leading Brunei bank.

Dato Ong sits on a number of regional boards including the Asian Advisory Board for Prudential Financial Inc, Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and Jebsen and Jessen Southeast Asia (JJSEA). He was an independent director of Singapore Petroleum Company (SPC) from 2003 until its takeover by PetroChina in 2009.

He was Chairman of the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) from 2005 to November 2010. In the World Bank’s 2009 survey of investment promotion agencies, the BEDB was placed amongst the top 4 out of 24 countries in Asia and the Pacific. Dato Ong is the recipient of a number of state honours including the Most Honourable Order of Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei (DPMB) which confers the title ‘Dato Paduka’. He was conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Bernardo O’Higgins (highest civilian award) by the President of Chile in 2006 for his contribution to regional economic cooperation.

He studied Economics and Political Science at the Australian National University where he graduated with B.A. (Honours) at the top of his class. He obtained an M.Sc. (with Distinction) in International Relations from the London School of Economics.

Last night’s Singapore Association Annual Dinner was characterized by fun, entertainment, and of course multiculturalism. The venue was packed solid with folks from Singapore and their friends and family. There were performances from Pei Pei, Yani, and local band Prodigy. The emcee for the night was Singaporean funnyman Suhaimi Yusof who got the crowd chuckling away at his antics.

The Singapore Association was formed to create opportunities for Singaporeans to socialise and interact with their local counterparts, provide local knowledge and networking for those visiting and working in the country, and also to show that overseas Singaporeans are an equally caring and civic conscious group.

Despite the Nerds or Superheroes theme, it was the invasion of the nerds at the Baiduri Bank Media Appreciation Night last night where the nerds clearly outnumbered the superheroes! Those who WERE dressed as superheroes were AWESOME though!

Last night, yours truly attended an awareness talk organised by Baiduri Prestige, the bank’s exclusive programme in collaboration with Jerudong Park Medical Centre, the highly acclaimed Head of Neuroscience Stroke Rehabilitation Centre in JPMC, Professor Datin Seri Laila Jasa Dr Uta Meyding-Lamade conducted a talk on stroke awareness at the Radisson Hotel yesterday in conjunction with the World Stroke Day 2011.

According to Professor Meyding, there is still a lack of knowledge on stroke symptoms and delay seeking immediate medical attention, with most stroke patients at Jerudong Park Medical Centre’s Neuroscience, Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre (NSRC) taking more than 24 hours to be admitted.

Professor Meyding in her talk outlined the two types of stroke: ischemic and haemorrhagic. In haemorrhagic stroke, there is a rupture in an artery which supplies blood to the brain which causes bleeding into the brain. She went on to say that most of the cases are ischemic strokes, which means that the vessel is not ruptured but blocked, so that the blood supply to a certain region of the brain is interrupted.

Since brain tissue is very vulnerable to a lack of blood and oxygen supply, there is a crucial need to try to reopen that vessel as soon as possible. The treatment administered is called systemic thrombolysis, where with medication, they are able to reopen a blocked brain supplying vessel. Large studies found that if thrombolysis is administered within four and a half hours after symptom onset, then there is a significant benefit for the patients regarding their neurological deficit, their survival and quality of life after the stroke.

Alliance Francaise de Brunei Darussalam (AF Brunei) held a ceremony of DELF Certificate Presentation to 8 DELF who have succeeded in their DELF Examinations in June 2011. Present as the guest of honour was His Excellency, Mr. Louis LE VERT, the French Ambassador in Brunei Darussalam to present the DELF Certifications to the 8 DELF Candidates. Amongst the 8 DELF Candidates was Mr Mark Sawers, the High Commissioner of Australia in Brunei Darussalam and students within and outside of Alliance Francaise de Brunei Darussalam who partook in the DELF June 2011 examinations.

DELF is a set of official qualifications awarded by the Council of Europe through Ministry of Education of France CIEP, Centre International des Etudes Pedagogiques to certify the individual’s competency in the French language in which the individual receives a Diplome d’etudes en langue Francaise – Diploma in French Language studies.

Two weekends ago, families in Kampung Bolkiah found out that they could actually exchange their “trash” for food.

The Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s Student Community Outreach Team (SCOT) gave rice and noodles to low income families in the village in exchange for their collected recylables.

The students’ group aims to eradicate poverty and to promote “green” practices.

“We saw this as an opportunity to ‘kill two birds with one stone’ while also hoping to change the mindset of the people in Brunei to recycle more and we’re trying to show them that some trash actually has value,” said project manager Noor Amal Azirah Azlan. “This can actually be seen as one of the ways which they can improve their way of life.”

Kg Bolkiah was selected as the first location for the project as some of the residents were victims of a recent fire and majority of the villagers were low income earners.

Rice and noodles were given to residents in exchange for their collected recyclable materials mostly aluminium cans and cardboard boxes.

Noor Amal said “every dollar worth of recyclables, they would get 1.5 kilos of rice.”

“It’s almost like a subsidy,” she added. SCOT stationed their base of operations at the Kg Bolkiah Mosque yesterday where residents delivered and weighed recyclables. The total amount of recyclables yesterday weighed up to 1,095 kgs which surpassed Scot’s expected mark of 100 kgs for their day-long operation.

The project manager said that she was happy with the response despite her worries of not having much participation due to the lack of recycling practices currently being done.

When asked more about the future of such projects, Noor Amal hoped for it to be conducted again in another six months but could not confirm the chosen village for their next initiative. “I hope that it’ll be bigger with a much higher response,” she added.

A total of 80 volunteers participated that day.

After the overwhelming amount of recyclables, the stocks of the commodities drew short but residents were given coupons for them to collect their rewards the next day. – The Brunei Times

Yesterday’s charity bazaar at Pusat Ehsan in Bengkurong was a fun-filled and crowded affair. I missed the opening ceremony in the morning but dropped by in the afternoon to check it out. The kids really enjoyed themselves with the various games and activities which were on offer. It really reminded me of the Gurkha Fair which was an annual event which took place at the Roxana Padang in Seria in the 70′s and 80′s. Siok lah for both the kids and the adults too!

The launching of the event will be officiated by Her Royal Highness Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bulqiah at the grounds of Pusat Ehsan in Kg Bengkurong, where the Charity Bazaar will be held. The event will last from 9am to 6pm.

The charity bazaar is aimed to raise funds for Pusat Ehsan which will be used to finance the on-going and upcoming operating cost of the centre in providing quality education, training, care and rehabilitation services to special needs children at the centre, said Aaron Goh, the head of publicity during a press conference held in Pusat Ehsan last month.

“The objective of this charity bazaar is for people to have fun, families to enjoy the carnival games such as flying fox,” he said. “It (the charity bazaar) is also a chance for people to check out our facilities and (we) hope we can encourage parents that Pusat Ehsan is a friendly environment for their children who need extra attention in learning and socialising.”

A variety of activities, such as horse-riding, face-painting, garage sales and food stalls, will be organised at the charity bazaar for a fun-filled Sunday for visitors, he said. He revealed that paintball games and archery are some of the “potential” activities that will be set up on the day.

Attractive prizes, such as an iPad 2, an air-conditioner and a 42-inch flatscreen television, are also up to be won in lucky draws during the charity bazaar.

According to Goh, members of the public who wished to visit the charity bazaar have to buy coupons to participate in the activities. The reason for the use of coupons, he said, was to guarantee security of the people’s payments to play the games.

“It’s for security purposes, to avoid any chances of people paying to play the games and the money goes into pocket,” Goh told the press.

He added that the coupons are available for pre-sale at Pusat Ehsan and can also be purchased on the day of the charity bazaar.

Asked how much they hope to raise for this year’s charity bazaar, Goh said: “Well, last year we raised $80,000…hopefully, it will be higher (than that).”

This year’s bazaar encouraged the direct involvement of students from both public and private schools in Brunei. Jerudong International School (JIS), Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (Maktab Sains) are among the schools that are confirmed to be involved in the charity bazaar, according to him.

“Last year, the students were only involved in the cleaning up of the bazaar, this year, we’d like them to be directly involved,” he said, adding that there will be booths set up by the education institutions during the bazaar.

Dato Paduka Ar. H. Idris B. H. Abas, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Arkitek Idris, was born on 20th May 1950, the second child among seven. His family lived in Kampong Ayer, the water village in the nation’s capital, where as children, he and his siblings would swim and play in the unpolluted river. Every day, they had to travel across the river and walk to school. At that time, there was no electricity or running water, so they would eat and read at night by candlelight and had to carry water home from a nearby well using buckets.

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) yesterday hosted its annual ‘Takbir Syawal’ event for its valued clients at the Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club in Jerudong.

Over 1,000 special guests turned up for the colourful BIBD-organised celebration marking the Raya festivities, serving as a perfect venue for guests to exchange festive greetings and seek forgiveness from one another.

The guest list included the Syariah Minister of Religious Affairs Pegiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, members of the BIBD Board of Directors, members of Syariah Advisory Body, shareholders, foreign dignitaries, corporate partners, private sector reprasentitives, GLCs, CSR partners, friends and loyal customers.

BIBD Managing Director Javed Ahmad spoke to the Weekend Bulletin about the importance of yesterday’s event. “This is an opportunity for us to meet and greet our customers and say thank you for all the support that has been given to us,” he said.

The event to foster closer relations with the larger community and served as an ideal moment to ‘catch-up’ for people who seldom meet, he added.

BIBD management, senior officers, officers and staff were on hand to share the festive spirit with the guests.

A wide array of local delicacies and popular Raya cakes and pastries were whipped up for the event, and to complete the experience, the celebration was set in a beautifully decorated venue with festive music playing in the background. Local artistes also took the stage to spice things up.

BAIDURI BANK GROUP hosted a sit-down banquet for its customers and business associates for its ‘Malam Silaturrahim 2011′ celebration at The Empire Hotel and Country Club last night.

Gracing the event as the guest of honour was the Chairperson of Baiduri Bank Group Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Hjh Zariah Binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohammed Alam. The event was also graced with the presence of other members of the royal family.

The evening began with the recital of “Takbir Raya” and other traditional performances such as traditional dances and a pantun.

Following this, General Manager of Baiduri Bank, Pierre Imhof, made a welcoming address where he expressed his appreciation on behalf of the group to the guests for their support during the past year and outlined its major progress and achievements.

“Baiduri Bank Group achieved satisfactory financial results in 2010. Total assets increased 3.5 per cent to $2.6 billion out of which total loans and advances reached $1.5 billion,” highlighted Imhof in his speech. He also highlighted numerous international awards won by Baiduri Bank Group including the “Company of the Decade for Brunei” award from World Finance. The bank had also recently launched the Chinese RMB Time Deposit and Savings account, said Imhof. Baiduri Bank had also launched the UnionPay debit card – the first pin-based international debit card in Brunei.

After his speech, Imhof then proceeded to escort HRH Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Hjh Zariah onto the stage who was then presented tokens of appreciations from five organisations which have benefited from Baiduri Bank Group’s charity programmes: Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, Child Development Centre, Smarter Brunei, Learning Ladders Society and Ripas Pediatric Haemoto-Oncology Centre. – The Brunei Times
