WILD GEOMETRY

Good morning everyone,

Hope you are well :)

Some of you already saw a bit of this on my Instagram recently but today you can see this new print series I've done recently.

It's called "Wild Geometry" and I started working on it after reading many books about Sacred Geometry, Archimedean Solids, Symbolism and more. Does it look inspired on any of that? Maybe not but I assure you it is ;)

All prints are now available in the shop in two different sizes. Hope you like them!

Espero que estéis muy bien :)

Algunos seguro que ya visteis un pequeño adelanto en mi Instagram hace poquito pero hoy en exclusiva podéis ver al completo la nueva obra seriada que he hecho recientemente.

El proyecto se llama "Wild Geometry" -Geometría Salvaje- empecé a trabajar en él después de leer varios libros sobre Geometría Sagrada, sólidos arquimedianos, simbolismo y más temas de esos que tanto me gustan... Parecen las obras inspiradas en algo de ello? Quizás no demasiado a primera vista pero sí en lo profundo de su corazoncito ;)

Toda la serie está disponible en la tienda online en dos tamaños diferentes. ¡Espero que os gusten!

"The Beautifullest Place on Earth" a.k.a William Morris' "Red House"

So happy Spring is here.

The light has changed dramatically over the last few weeks, the house is filled with more and more sun and the reflections of the light in the garden even made me remember these pictures I took last Autumn at William Morris' "Red House" in Bexleyheath.

Such a beautiful place, visit it if you have the chance. I specially enjoyed the garden very much... peeking inside the greenhouse, the potting shed, admiring the Acanthus plants...can't wait to come back soon :)

Que alegría que la primavera ya está aquí.

La luz ha cambiado muchísimo a lo largo de las últimas semanas, la casa está cada día más llena de rayos de sol. También la luz en el jardín es mucho más primaveral y mágica ya, hasta me ha hecho recordar la visita que Sebastián y yo hicimos el otoño pasado en la "casa roja" de William Morris que hay en Bexleyheath.

Es un lugar precioso, os recomiendo que la visiteis si tenéis la oportunidad. Me gustó especialmente pasear por el jardín... cotillear un poco dentro del invernadero, de los covertizos, maravillarme con la cantidad de plantas de acanto tan preciosas que tienen... ¡que ganas de volver pronto! ;)

THE JOURNEY IS THE TREASURE

The lovely ladies at The W Project invited me to be part of their book "The Journey is the Treasure". It was presented last month on International Women's Day. It's an honour to be part of projects as inspiring as this one and to have my work in such good company -many talented women featured in the book!-. :)

INVENTING ABSTRACTION

Last week I came back from NYC. One of the things I wanted to do more in my trip was visiting this exhibition at Moma called "Inventing Abstraction". So my cup of tea!!

In the end my trip was busier and more improvised than I expected and couldn't make it. Feeling thankful however for the wonderful microsite that shows all the works and artist's bios. It's almost like visiting the show!

The museum I did manage to visit was Philadelphia's Museum of Art. They have such an amazing permanent collection! I dreamed about visiting it to see "Etánt Donnés" live since I started my Art studies when I was 16!.

I took some pics at the Outsider Art exhibition they have at the moment, you can see them on my Instagram feed ;)

La semana pasada volví de Nueva York. Una de las cosas que más quería hacer en mi visita era visitar una expo que hay en el Moma que se llama "Inventing Abstraction". ¡Reune a tantos de mis artistas favoritos!

Al final no conseguí visitarla ya que tuve días bastante ocupados y con poco tiempo para planear casi nada. La suerte es que los del MOMA han creado un microsite maravilloso que te muestra la expo tan bien tan bien que casi que te crees que la has visitado en persona. En este post van algunas imágenes extraidas de dicho site :)

El museo que sorpresivamente sí que conseguí visitar fue el Philadelphia's Museum of Art. Tienen una colección permanente increible. Cuando tenía 16 añitos soñaba con visitarlo para ver "Etánt Donnés" en directo!

A GIFT FOR CHOCOLATE LOVERS

Today I woke up thinking... "I'm going to share a couple of chocolate recipes I've tried (and loved) recently with all the cacao enthusiasts out there". And here I am, bringing you a Chocolate-Tahini Timbales recipe and another one to make a Chocolate Sea Salt Tart.

I've transcribed them from a delicious and inspiring book by Joseph Shuldiner called "Pure Vegan".

CHOCOLATE-TAHINI TIMBALES
----------------------------------------------------------

4 ounces of dark baking chocolate, coarsely chopped (1/2 cup)
2/3 cup of oat, coconut, almond or rice drink
1 ts of granulated coffee
1 ts of coffee substitute
1 ts of pure vanilla extract
1.5 cups of flour (I used spelt, rye and corn)
1 cup of coconut palm sugar
1.5 tea spoon of baking powder
1/3 Dutch-process cocoa powder
1/2 ts salt

Preheat oven to 350ºF (175-180ºC)

Heat the mil over medium heat until it's about to start boiling, then add it to a bowl where the chocolate is waiting for her. Add the coffee, barley, tahini and vanilla. Let it stand for 1 minute, then stir until the mixture is smooth.

Sift the flour, coconut sugar, baking powder, cocoa and salt together into a large bowl. Add the chocolate mixture and stir gently until just combined.

Fill until two-thirds full as many timbale molds as you can -approx 24 with this recipe-. If you don't have timbale moulds you can do mini-cupcakes or similar... let your imagination run wild!

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the tops are firm but the inside is still slightly soft (test inserting a toothpick). Transfer the molds to a wire rack and let cool for 5 minutes, then invert the molds and let the timbales cool completely, about 15 minutes.

CHOCOLATE SEA SALT TART

----------------------------------------------------------

CACAO TART SHELL

1.5 cups of flour (I used spelt, rye and almond)
1/2 cup coconut palm sugar
2 tbs pure cacao powder
1/4 ts salt
1/2 cup cold vegan margarine, diced
1 to 3 tbs ice water or more as needed

FILLING

1 1/4 pounds dark chocolate, coarsely chopped (500gr approx)
2 1/2 cups rice or coconut drink
1 tbs instant espresso powder (you can use any kind of coffee substitute if you prefer)
1 teaspoon salt

Maldon sea salt or anhy high quality flake sea salt for garnish

Preheat oven to 350ºF (175-180ºC)

TO MAKE THE TART SHELL

In a food processor, combine the flour, coconut sugar, cacao powder, salt and shortening and pulse until the mixture is evenly blended.
Add the water 1 tablespoon at a time while continuing to pulse. Stop as soon as the dough starts to come together. Test by pinching a bit of the dough with your fingers. If it sticks together, it's ready. If not, add more water. Alternatively, you can mix the dough by hand.

Transfer the dough directly into a 9-inch tart pan and gently press it building up the sides to form a 1/4 inch-thick (6mm) wall of dough. Then distribute the remaining dough evenly over the bottom of the pan. Press with a cup or with your hands the shell to be sure it's compact. Prick the bottom of the tart shell with the tines of a fork 12 to 15 times to prevent the crust from puffing up during baking. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
After that bake it for 20 minutes, remove it from the oven and let rest while you prepare the filling.

TO MAKE THE FILLING

Put the chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl. In a small saucepan heat the milk over medium heat until it begins to steam and almost comes to a boil. Add the coffee/barley powder and salt and stir until dissolved. Pour the soymilk over the chocolate and let stand for 1 minute, then stir until the misture is smooth and the chocolate is entirely melted.

Pour the filling into the baked tart shell and use an offset spatula to spread it evenly. Give the tarta a gentle but firm rap on the counter to settle the filling and remove any air bubbles. Let the tart cool to room temperature, which should take about 30 minutes. When it's completely cool, sprinkle with the sea salt flakes evenly over the top and serve.

My Collaboration with Grooveshark

Good morning everyone!

Long time no see! Sorry for not posting lately... been very busy with work but now I'm back! :)

Time ago I was asked by Grooveshark to make a designer theme for them. As I wanted it to be music related I re-read some books about sound/colour/shape theory... also Kandinsky's work was of great inspiration. I ended up making a geometric composition playing with rhythm as much as possible. The design comes in two colourways because daytime music is a total different experience to nighttime music for me, hence the light and dark palettes.

Buenos días a todos, ¡cuanto tiempo!

Disculpad que no he subido ningún post desde hace tanto rato pero he estado bastante ocupada con trabajo. Lo bueno es que estoy de vuelta e iré subiendo próximamente cositas nuevas de todo tipo :)

Hace un tiempo la gente de Grooveshark me pidieron que les hiciera un "interfaz de autor" para su site. Como quería que el diseño tuviese una conexion musical me estuve releyendo algunos libros sobre teorías del sonido/color/forma... también remirarme la obra de Kandinsky fue de gran inspiración.

Al final traté de hacer una composición que jugara con el ritmo tanto como fuera posible. Utilicé dos paletas de color diferentes ya que me parece que la experiencia de escuchar música de día es totalmente diferente a la de escucharla por la noche, por eso la versión clarita y la oscura-.

My Christmas Collaboration with Anthropologie on Elle Deco

Morning everyone!

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend : )

I finally had a bit of time to put together some pics I took from the lovely Anthropologie Gift Guide that is part of next month's Elle Decoration (UK) magazine. I was asked by Anthropologie Europe to collaborate with them doing some illustrations for the booklet and a wrapping paper design for Christmas.

It was a pleasure to work on this project, the people at Anthropologie were always impeccable and my lovely Clem made everything work like clockwork so I could focus on pure watercolour work while listening mainly to Damon Albarn's "Dr Dee" album (been addicted to it since I went last summer to see the show at the London Coliseum) and Enrico Caruso.

Anthropologie's inspiration for this season is Iceland. Because of that I tried the wrapping paper design to look be inspired by ice formations. How marvelous was to have a briefing like that as I really love those Icelandic landscapes (even the project I did for my Landscape Design class while at uni was inspired by Iceland's environment).

Espero que hayáis tenido un muy buen fin de semana ; )

Por fín he tenido un ratito para subir algunas fotos que hice de la Elle Decoration (UK) del próximo mes de diciembre en la que viene un librito de navidad de Anthropologie en la que salen algunas ilustraciones y un diseño de papel de regalo que hice para ellos.

Me hizo mucha ilusión que me pidieran este encargo. Fue genial colaborar con Anthropologie siempre tan impecables. Además mi querida Clem hizo que todo funcionara como un reloj suizo. Un placer poder enfocarme en puro trabajo de acuarela mientras escuchaba sobre todo "Dr Dee" de Damon Albarn's (totalmente adicta del disco desde que fuimos a ver la ópera el pasado verano en el London Coliseum) y Enrico Caruso.

La inspiración de Anthropologie para esta temporada es Islandia. Por esto intenté que el papel de regalo fuera un poco como formaciones de hielo. Que maravilla de briefing, adoro el paisaje islandés. Tanto que hasta cuando estudiaba Bellas Artes en la Universidad hice mi proyecto final para la asignatura "Diseño de Paisajes" todo inspirado en Islandia y su paisaje.

He escaneado para vosotros algunas imágenes de este libro tan maravilloso. Se llama "Plants in Garden History" y es tan completo y apasionante. No solamente está lleno de ilustraciones fantásticas pero también de muchísima información sobre la historia de la jardinería.

New Scarves

At the moment they are just one-offs but I'm thinking about making a few limited edition series to sell on the e-shop. The only thing I'm not sure yet is the material. These were printed on a very soft and delicate silk-like fabric (totally vegan though because of what they do to the poor worms in order to make silk)... but I wonder if it would be nicer to make them on a light "wool delaine" or similar so that it's a bit more cozy?

I'd love to hear your thoughts dear scarf wearers, any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

Por el momento son piezas únicas pero estoy pensando en sacar unas ediciones limitadas con varias series de ellas para vender en mi tienda online. Lo único de lo que no estoy 100% segura es el material.
Estas fueron impresas en una gasa muy suave y ligera (muy similar a la seda pero totalmente vegana ya que me impactó mucho enterarme que en el proceso de la seda a los gusanitos por lo general les hierven vivos para que no rompan ninguna fibra de los capullos de seda al salir de la crisálida :/ ).
Me gustan en gasa pero me imagino que podrían estar genial también impresos y confeccionados en un "wool delaine" o algo así para que aunque siga siendo ligerito sea un poco más calentito?

Me encantaría saber vuestra opinión, lectores/as que llevais foulares y pañuelos. ¿Tenéis alguna preferencia de tejidos que os gustaria ver más en el mercado? Mil gracias por adelantado.

New York Next Week

I'll be spending next week in NYC!! Can't wait to go to the flea markets in Brooklyn, raw food restaurants in Manhattan, exhibitions everywhere... Haven't been there for such a long time that I have lots of catching-up to do! ;)

I'd love to go to this Kandinsky show at Solomon R. Guggenheim. Also in my to-do list is visiting "Century of the Child" at MOMA. In this post you have some images from Century of the Child. They have put a wonderful interactive microsite to browse the pieces that are being exhibited.

Dear readers, my stats tell me that thousands of you are based in the US. Any recommendations for my trip? Any gallery I should visit, shop I should know, etc? Thanks in advance! :)

New Album Design for Cineplexx

Today I'm finally able to share with you properly the work I made for Cineplexx's latest album "Perfume"-out now!! :) -.

I made the design over a year ago. It all started with a very simple pencil drawing that you can see at the end of this post. As you may know I'm totally obsessed with botany so the album title was the perfect excuse to continue with my "illustrated flower affair". The big difference between this project and other floral projects I was involved (like the ones for Nina Ricci for example) is that "Perfume" has a lot of 60s psychedelia influences, that's why the colour treatment is so acid.

Espero que hayáis disfrutado del fin de semana.

Estoy muy contenta ya que hoy por fin puedo enseñaros en condiciones lo que hice para el último disco de Cineplexx "Perfume" (que acaba de salir :)

Hice el diseño hace más de un año. Todo comenzó con un dibujo a lapiz muy sencillo que podéis ver al final de este post. Como a estas alturas ya sabréis, la botánica es una de mis mayores obsesiones así que el titulo del album era la excusa perfecta para seguir con mi "historia de amor floral ilustrada". La diferencia entre este y otros "projectos florales" en los que he estado involucrada en el pasado (como los que hice para Nina Ricci por ejemplo) es que "Perfume" tiene un montón de influencias de música psicodélica de la década de los 60. Por eso es por lo que hice el tratamiento de color tan ácido ;)

Scarves for La Casita de Wendy's "The Crafter Project"

Morning everyone!

I'm very happy to finally be able to show you these one-off scarves I made last Spring when La Casita de Wendy invited me to be part of their "The Crafter Project".

I love what LCW do, their style is so unique and authentic. Also their attitude towards both life and fashion is always very honest and inspiring. Read their manifesto and you'll see.

For the project they've invited Spanish young designers and crafters that like to do things locally in a sustainable way. Each of the invited creatives has made 5 exclusive pieces for the project having La Casita de Wendy's Summer collection "There Is No Place Like Home" as inspiration.

Me hace mucha ilusión poder mostraros hoy estos cinco pañuelos únicos que hice la primavera pasada cuando La Casita de Wendy me invitaron a formar parte de su nueva edición de "The Crafter Project".

Me encanta lo que hacen LCW, su estilo es super único y ellos son de lo más auténtico. Su actitud ante la vida y la industria de la moda es también increiblemente honesta e inspiradora. Leed su manifesto y veréis.

Para este proyecto nos han invitado a varios diseñadores y/o artesanos españoles -muchos de los cuales son fan!- a crear 5 cinco piezas exclusivas inspiradas en la colección de La Casita de Wendy's "There Is No Place Like Home".

Carolina Herrera Sport Men

Haven't been very good at updating the blog lately... sorry for that. It's been pretty hectic around here. Working on many things at the same time. Can't wait to share them with you when the time comes :)

Today I'm posting about a Carolina Herrera project I was working on last year that was finally launched this (last) Summer. I was approached to create a pattern design for a new fragrance for men they were creating.
The campaign was shot by Bruce Weber and Albert Folch Studio were in charge of the graphic design.

On the first two pics you can see the chosen pattern in context. The rest of the images are drafts from the beginning of the project.

Feels good to use primary colours from time to time ;)

No he sido muy buena en esto de actualizar el blog últimamente, disculpad. Ando con mucho lio, trabajando en varias cosas a la vez. Muchas ganas de mostraros en lo que ando involucrada en cuanto me sea posible :)

Hoy el post va de un proyecto de Carolina Herrera en el que trabajé el año pasado y que se lanzó el pasado verano. Me pidieron que hiciera un estampado para una nueva fragancia para hombre que estaban planeando sacar y eso es lo que hice.

Las fotos de la campaña las hizo Bruce Weber y la gráfica estuvo a cargo de Albert Folch Studio.

En las primeras dos fotos podéis ver el estampado elegido en contexto. El resto de las imágenes muestra algunos bocetos del inicio del proyecto.

¡Para que luego no digáis que evito los colores vibrantes y/o primarios! ;)

Happy rentrée! Hope you are well :)

Sorry I haven't post for such a long time... it's been quite busy around here since the last time I updated the blog. First looking for a new house, then getting ready for the move, later on unpacking and working on commissions for clients... didn't go on vacations or anything like that but it didn't seem to matter that much as I was too happy and obsessed with my garden -digging, sowing and weeding like there was no tomorrow!-. I'll upload some pics from it very soon. If you can't wait until then you can follow me on Instagram, I'm there as "Ana Montiel".

Such a beautiful posters poster collection, almost as amazing as the place itself...
Kew Royal Botanical Gardens, one of the most magical places that you can visit when in London. I'd love that my National Art Pass would include free entrance to Kew. If so I'd be visiting monthly or even weekly! ;)

Perdonad que no he posteado desde hace tanto... he estado bastante ocupada desde la última vez que actualicé el blog. Primero buscando casa nueva, luego preparando la mudanza, más tarde instalándonos y mientras tanto trabajando en encargos para clientes... ni siquiera he ido a ningún sitio de vacaciones ni nada de eso pero la verdad es que tampoco ha importado demasiado ya que andaba demasiado contenta y obsesionada con mi jardín -cavando, sembrando y quitando malas hierbas como una loca -. Subiré algunas fotitos del jardín pronto. Si no queréis esperar hasta entonces me podéis seguir en Instagram y ahí veréis algunas fotos improvisadas que he ido sacando... mi nombre de usuario es "Ana Montiel".

Que recopilación tan bella de posters que reune este libro, casi tan maravilloso como el lugar en sí...

El jardín botánico de Kew es uno de los lugares más maravillosos que podéis visitar en Londres. Me encantaría que mi National Art Pass incluyera entrada libre a Kew, si así fuera lo visitaría mensualmente e incluso semanalmente! ;)

Promotional Packs for Nina Ricci #1

Morning dear readers, hope you are well.

The other day I found some drafts that I made during my first week in London for a Nina Ricci project I was commissioned.

The people from NR got in touch with me at that point in 2010 asking to design their promotional packs for Christmas, Valentine's Day, etc. Almost all of my proposals were planned to have metallic inks and special production effects...

I think they weren't produced in the end but I thought it would be fun to share them with you :)

Buenos días queridos lectores, espero que estéis bien.

El otro día encontré algunos bocetos que hice nada más mudarme a Londres en el verano de 2010... son parte de un encargo que me hizo la gente de Nina Ricci.

Me pidieron que diseñara sus packs promocionales para Navidad, el día de San Valentín, etc.

Prácticamente todas mis propuestas llevaban tintas metalizadas, troqueles y detalles de producción bien festivos ;) aquí van algunos de los bocetos, creo que al final no los utilizaron pero me ha apetecido compartirlos con vosotros.

Sorry for being so quiet dear readers,

Things have been pretty hectic around here. Lots of work, a trip to Madrid to visit family and friends and the house hunting thing... I thought a lot about you guys but sometimes offline life has priority ;)

To compensate I've brought today some delightful vintage colour charts from The Textile Color Card Association that I found at the Philadelphia Design Center's Tumblr page. Hope you like them.

Hope you had a good Easter :)

Here things have been pretty hectic for some time. Lots of deadlines, many things to do and on top of it we have started looking for a new home. We are needing more space and a garden... I'm so impatient with the garden thing that I already started buying many seeds and plants that will be on it -can't wait for the Jewel Crown Gardenia and the Wisteria to arrive! :D -

For today's post I've scanned some images from the super inspiring book "Simple Home: Calm Spaces for a Comfortable Living" by Mark and Sally Bailey. All so lovely and peaceful!

Aquí la cosa está muy en plan "corre corre"... muchos encargos, cosas que organizar y además de todo eso hemos comenzado a buscar un nuevo hogar. Necesitamos más espacio y un jardincito... Ando tan impaciente con el tema del jardín que ya he comenzado a comprar varias plantas y semillas que irán en él -ojalá la Jewel Crown Gardenia y la Glicinia lleguen pronto! :D -.

This is the piece I made for the "Words of Wisdom" group exhibition, remember I told you about a couple weeks ago?

It's a lenticular flip postcard. It changes depending on the angle you look at it as I wanted the piece to have like a "breath in" mode and a "breath out" mode to be in tune with the message printed on it.

It was interesting and fun researching about lenticular photography, I might use it for another project in the future again ;)

Esta pieza es la que hice para la exposición colectiva con motivo del día de la mujer (Words of Wisdom) que os comenté.

Es una postal lenticular que cambia dependiendo del ángulo desde el que la mires.

Quería que tuviera un modo en el que "inspirara" y otro en el que "espirara" para que hiciera juego con el mensaje que tiene inscrito en ella que significa "respira hondo"...

Fue divertido e interesante aprender sobre fotografía lenticular, quizás vuelva a utilizar el soporte en algún proyecto futuro ;)

See here some pics from the opening that my beloved Sebastian took last Thursday, sorry for the delay at uploading them, but better late than never! ;)

Hoxton Square was very busy all the evening, first with the Gilbert and George opening at the White Cube and then with all the people that came over to the Words of Wisdom show at KK Outlet.

It was lots of fun, thanks a lot to all the people who came and even more to the people who organized it! :)

Aquí van algunas imágenes de la inauguración de la expo que mi amado Sebastian hizo. Perdonad la tardanza en compartirlas he estado muy ocupada... pero mejor tarde que nunca, no? ;)

La plaza de Hoxton estuvo llena de gente toda la tarde-noche, primero con motivo de la inauguración de Gilbert and George en el White Cube y después con toda la gente que vino para la expo de Words of Wisdom en el KK Outlet.

Fue muy divertido, mil gracias a todos los que vinieron y a las que organizaron :)

I'm very happy that I've been featured in the most widely read newspaper in Spain!

The thing that it is so popular is not so important for me really, the thing that makes it important for me is that this is the newspaper that was always around during my childhood and teenage years when I lived with my parents so in some way I have a special affection for it. :)

Estoy muy contenta porque me han entrevistado en El País -¡el periódico más leido de mi querida España!-.

El que sea tan popular no es lo que me ilusiona tanto sino que es el que estuvo presente en casa durante mi infancia y adolescencia. Es el que compraban mis padres cuando vivía con ellos -de hecho mi padre lo sigue comprando e imagino mi madre lo compraría si estuviera por aquí también- así que he de confesar que le tengo especial cariño por ser el periódico con el que me crié :)
