CES 2013: Samsung shows off flexible screen technology

Bendy 'Youm' screens likely to appear in future Samsung flagship phones

Back in December, we heard a report of a radical new screen design, which was a 'possible' for the Samsung Galaxy S IV when it eventually launches later this year. Now Samsung has shown off the technology at CES, which just might be coming to a Samsung phone in the fairly near future.

We say that because this wasn't just some concept on a screen being talked about. The technology itself (named 'Youm') was demonstrated via a handheld device, which means that the screen is in a form that can be transferred to a smartphone. When it does, it's likely to be a genuine game changer.

The screen is flexible, but on the handheld it also wrapped around, which means you can use the same screen to fold out and browse or watch videos on a larger screen, but when folded in, you can still get notifications and updates (for example) when the phone is flat on your desk, effectively asleep. Radical stuff.

It really does mean that Samsung could change the way we use our phones, but it also means the company could create bigger mobile screens without the bulk of a traditional flat phone.

How this will translate to the market wasn't made clear. But you could imagine a next-generation Note utilising this very effectively. A Samsung Galaxy IV or V? Possibly, but it would mean a radical design departure.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV is the next big launch, expected in the middle of 2013. Gut feeling is that it will not feature this technology, but we would love to be proven wrong.

CES 2013: Chinese enter Western mobile device market

Chinese electronics firm Huawei has launched two major mobile devices as it looks to muscle into Western markets.

Huawei's Ascend Mate device has a 6.1in (15cm) display that puts it squarely in competition with Samsung's Galaxy Note.

The company also unveiled the Ascend D2, which has higher screen resolution than Apple's iPhone 5.

Huawei is one of several Chinese companies expanding their presence at this year's Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Telecommunications equipment provider ZTE also has a large presence, and is expected to announce its own new smartphone on Tuesday.

Elsewhere at CES Las Vegas, another Chinese company, HiSense, occupies the floor space previously home to Microsoft, which pulled out of this year's show.

'Security threat'

Huawei is a well established player in global technology. But in 2013 the company hopes to transform itself from a behind-the-scenes technology provider - powering infrastructure, for instance - into a recognisable consumer brand.

In doing so it faces a public relations challenge: the US government in October branded the company a "security threat".

The US government says it fears Huawei equipment could be used unlawfully to monitor communications and other activity.

Washington has made the same warnings about ZTE, suggesting that US companies steer clear of the firm.

Political battles aside, Huawei and ZTE face a uphill climb to win over consumers unfamiliar with the companies.

The Ascend Mate fits into the busy but still up-for-grabs market for "phablets" - devices sized between a smartphone and a tablet.

The Ascend D2 smartphone features a 13-megapixel camera - the iPhone 5 has eight - and up to two days' battery life. It is also marketed as waterproof - it was doused in a jug of water during the on-stage demo.

Both of Huawei's new devices run on Google's Android mobile operating system and are expected to be released globally in March.

"2013 has real potential for Huawei to move from being a budget choice to a genuine challenger," said Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. "Our research shows that consumer brand preference for Huawei is low in developed markets - below 1% in US and Germany; however these three new handsets show they are setting their ambitions are far higher."

"Clearly they have done their research," he said. "All the new handsets have very large batteries. Poor battery life is the number one issue for smartphone owners, with 54% listing it as their top complaint - addressing this should be a winning factor with consumers.

"The one area of concern would be for the Huawei 6.1-inch Ascend Mate," he said. "Bigger screen sizes are becoming more popular, demonstrated by the success of the Samsung Galaxy Note,

"However for a relatively unknown brand to push the size barriers this far is a risk," he added. "Samsung invented the 'phablet' category armed with a serious marketing budget, and unless Huawei follow suit this is likely to remain a niche product. We think the Huawei Ascend D2 is more likely to be a hit with consumers. "

Lenovo's New Coffee Table Computer Is One Big Gigantic iPad

The first introductory events of this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicked off quietly this weekend, giving the world a glimpse at the coolest, shiniest new gadgets out there. The show doesn't actually start until Tuesday, but the sneak previews are a great chance for companies to get out in front of the inevitably oversaturated tech news cycle that the week brings.

One cool-looking gadget that caught our eye comes from Lenovo, the makers of the very boring-looking ThinkPads. It's called the IdeaCenter Horizon Table PC and is eye-catching mostly because it looks like something out of an Onion article about zany gadgets at CES, except it's absolutely real and you can totally buy one. What is it? Well, for lack of a better analogy, it's like one enormous iPad that you can carry around your house, play boardgames on and use as a table. Just be careful not to spill your drinks.

To be exact, the Horizon's 27-inch touchscreen is the equivalent of eight iPads jammed together. Its guts are comparably scaled up and include everything you might expect from the latest desktop PCs. It runs Windows 8 as well as a new operating system developed by Lenovo called Aura. It's also portable thanks to a built-in battery, though it only lasts two hours. "Portable" might be a bit of stretch, too, since it weighs 17 pounds. Nevertheless, you can prop it up on your desk and write emails to your grandma then pick the thing up and take it to the living room where you can lay it flat and play a fun game of Chutes and Ladders with the kids. Lenovo also made a bunch of accessories like joysticks and air hockey paddles for even more fun for the whole family. There are also some prototypes on display that integrate the machine into pieces of furniture like a coffee table so that the computer really is a part of the home.

We've been anticipating the dawn of the tabletop PC since 2008, when Microsoft unveiled a 30-inch machine called the Surface -- not to be confused with the recently released Surface tablet. Like the Horizon, it featured an interface straight out of Minority Report and made us wonder just what we could do with a giant horizontal screen. But since each Microsoft Surface machine cost tens of thousands of dollars, not many people were able to take them home and experiment. Features aside, the Horizon stands out for its relatively reasonable price starting at $1,699, the price of about three iPads.

All that said, it remains to be seen just how useful these things will actually be. Kind of like the very cool but also basically ridiculous mirror computer we saw last year.

Razer Switchblade, Gaming Tablet PC concept

CES 2011 is also enlivened by a prototype called the Razer gaming netbook Switchblade. The size is also smaller than standard netbooks with screens only 7 inches.

Razer is very popular in terms of gaming peripherals, but during the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in 2011, has revealed a product that truly new and fresh targeted to groups of gamers.

Razer Switchblade is a special mini netbook or UMPC. We can find the OS Microsoft Windows 7 with a special GUI option so that the view is really running very smoothly, especially for gaming.

Here we can select games, multimedia and other applications. Intel Atom-based hardware platform, although we do not know the exact specifications of the Razer is used, a clear Switchblade powerful enough to run World of Warcraft at 1024 x 600 pixels (the default screen resolution).

Razer Switchblade is equipped with a keyboard that can change function according to the game you’re playing. This device was developed together with Intel’s Atom chip which provides, while not known for graphics chip provider. Razer intend to make this machine as a substitute for a mouse and keyboard combination that is used gamers playing on the computer.

There are multi-touch screen and keyboard ultrasensitive dynamic shared a view that is called the Razer as a user interface that can customize the layout depending on the mode button quickly played game. With Switchblade Razer hopes to adapt and play all PC games which can also be taken anywhere with lightly like the Nintendo DS.

Keyboard with the screen buttons.

Here it is going to make gamers interested, the keyboard has a unique Switchblade unlike its competitors. Each button like a mini OLED-based screen-based Opimus and can display the same symbol or icon-screen game play. Very interesting indeed, because gamers do not need to click here and there on the screen.

Razer Switchblade equipped with USB ports, WiFi, Bluetooth and likely future will be equipped with 3G, allowing us to play games online, just as promised by Panasonic Jungle.

Razer has yet to confirm whether the Switchblade will be mass produced, but according to some of these observations is one product that is very interesting.
This device is still a concept prototype. No launch date or price information. Still need some more time to refine this concept and can be tested to the public.

ComScore: Facebook Is Now the Most Used Mobile App in US

Seth Fiegerman10 hours ago

Facebook is the most popular mobile app in the U.S. in terms of unique users — at least for now.
The signature Facebook app passed Google Maps in October of last year to become the most used mobile app in the U.S. and held onto the top spot through the end of the year, according to data released Wednesday by comScore Mobile Metrix.
Facebook's app enjoyed strong growth in 2012 with 85.5 million monthly unique users in the U.S. in December across iOS, Android and RIM's mobile platforms, up from just under 65 million in March, when comScore first started tracking mobile app data. (In October, Facebook reported 604 million monthly mobile users worldwide.) Google Maps, on the other hand, saw its active user numbers dip from about 80 million in August and September to a little more than 70 million in October after it was removed as a default app on iOS 6.
"Both Google Maps and Facebook were growing nicely throughout the year until that happened," Andrew Lipsman, VP of industry analysis at comScore, told Mashable. "Facebook continued that trend and Google Maps took a dip that one month and now it's climbing back." Google launched a new Maps app for iOS 6 in mid-December, and Lipsman says it's likely Maps will grow its user numbers at a faster rate going forward, though it's unclear whether and when the app will return to the top spot.

ComScore's mobile app data is based on browsing behavior tracks from a panel of users as well as supplemental data from publishers showing app usage. The numbers represent active visitors to apps — rather than app downloads — similar to the way that comScore tracks visitors to websites.
While Facebook currently held the top spot at the end of the year, Google had the next five most used apps, including Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube. Lipsman credited this to the growth of Android and the popularity of Google services in general.

Aside from having the largest audience, Facebook's app also has by far the highest level of engagement. According to comScore, Facebook's app accounted for 23% of time spent on mobile apps while all of Google's apps collectively account for 10% of time spent.

Turn Your Windows 8 Laptop Into a Touchscreen Device With This Gadget

Samantha MurphyJan 07, 2013

LAS VEGAS — Want to turn your laptop or desktop running Windows 8 into a touchscreen device? Accessory company Targus announced on Monday morning at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas a first-of-its kind technology that makes the most of the latest Windows operating system, without the need to splurge for a pricey new computer that touts the company's built-in touchscreen capabilities.
Windows 8 — which launched in October and was designed for touch — allows users to swipe, slide and access a full collection of features via your finger. But because of the cost of new hardware, many Microsoft fans upgraded to Windows 8 without buying an expensive touch-screen PC. Now, the Targus Touch Pen aims to give anyone using Windows 8 on older hardware the touch experience, with the help of a stylus.
"Windows 8 is designed for touch, so if you have a current laptop and your device isn't capability for touch [sic], it lessens the value," Al Giazzon, VP of marketing and communications at Targus, told Mashable. "We put together a new product that turns current computers into a touchscreen device that supports Windows 8. It's easy to use, cheaper and is smaller than the size of your thumb."
Here's how it works: A small receiver attaches to the side of the laptop screen and communicates with the black Touch Pen via a cable that connects to a USB port, so your laptop thinks it has a touchscreen. The Touch Pen acts like your finger would on a touchscreen, and the screen is protected with the stylus' soft tip. (Note: It doesn't work with an actual finger because it doesn't use either capacitive or optical touch tech).

SEE ALSO: | Windows 8 Is Bold and Powerful [REVIEW] |The Problem With Windows 8

"Anything you can do with a touch-screen device, you can now do with a laptop or desktop," Giazzon said. "It also works with a laptop you bought years ago."
Even better, the Touch Pen doesn't require software or drivers, and only a one-time calibration is needed to set up the device and determine the measurements of the screen. It works with any computer with Windows 8 and monitors up to 17 inches (so larger all-in-ones are out). Meanwhile, the company said it patented the technology that simulates the touch experience with a stylus for Windows 8 devices, which may ward off other manufacturers looking to get into the space.
The Touch Pen will ship later this month and be available via Targus.com and various retailers, including Best Buy and Amazon.
What do you think of the Touch Pen? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

4 Data-Driven Models for Mobile Developers in 2013

Apps have become a staple of the smartphone era, but what role will they play in the near future? In its latest report, Expertmaker says wearable tech, better privacy and embedded intelligence are the factors that mobile developers will have to take into account in order to differentiate their apps in the coming years.

“Mobile technology has come a long way in the past few years,” said Lars Hard, founding CTO of Expertmaker. The entrepreneur dropped by at last week’s AnDevCon after having previously been at the Vodafone AI Hackaton. “Mobile devices now have extensive capabilities. In addition to analyzing digital content, mobile devices can harness ambient data such as temperature, location, user movements, schedule, user habits and engagement. Developers need to be able to leverage these new capabilities and sources of data to create more advanced apps.”

The firm, which offers developers a modular artificial intelligence toolset they can incorporate into their software, sees a lot of premise in the kind of technology Google brought into the public eye with Project Glass. Expertmaker considers gadgets that are “worn rather than carried” an opportunity for smarter apps that run on smaller screens.

The second trend the company lists concerns the opt-in applications that usually rely on location data to deliver content. Expertmaker says that in the future mobile developers will leverage AI in to eliminate the need for this information, eliminating many privacy and security threats.

The third trend follows the same train of thought: the likes of Facebook and Twitter will have to develop better algorithms in order to ensure their users’ data is not misused.

The final trend that the firm lists is AI- and big data-driven customization. The latter is already happening, but not all mobile developers have access to the proper tools – such as artificial intelligence – to make sense of their info.

Mobile Can 'See' Invisible

Mobile Can 'See' Invisible - New York, U.S. - The sophistication of the technology enabling it once seemed impossible, possible. Like this one. A smartphone can be used to 'see' through.

Scientists from Caltech to develop a small-sized imager teraherzt cheap. In smartphones, embedded chips that produce and emit terahertz waves.

Type these waves can penetrate a material, such as walls, without causing damage. When combined on a handheld device, this technology can be used for various purposes.

"Utilizing an inexpensive integrated circuit technology, the same used to make microchips in mobile phones, we make silicon chips that could operate almost 300 times their speed. Chip enables the latest generation sensors are versatile," said Professor Ali Hajimiri.

According to the developers, as we quoted from TG Daily, Friday (14/12/2012), terahertz wave technology can be used for security, wireless communication to gaming touchless.

With the help of IBM, a team at Caltech has been able to use standard CMOS technology. This technology ultimately used to design sillicon chips that operate at terahertz frequencies.

Terahertz scanning is actually not something new. This technology is already used by New York police, NYPD. For example, it is used to detect the presence of weapons. However, most existing systems involving laser size, expensive and often require very low temperatures.

The researchers claim to have succeeded in using this technology to find a razor blade hidden in a piece of plastic.

CES Download: Best New Travel Gadgets for 2013

Over 3,000 exhibitors and 1.85 million square feet of eye-popping innovations later, annual gadget industry gala the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has finally wrapped in Las Vegas, leaving frequent travelers surprised in more ways than one.

An evolutionary, not revolutionary, year for technology, key revelations nonetheless spanned the entire spectrum, including the weird (hooray, Internet-enabled forks), wild (see: self-driving cars), and wacky (enter the robotic spider walkers). Happily, a few—i.e. smartphones and tablets with PC-grade power, Android-powered cameras, and remote home security system—may even make sense to the lay viewer. Big trends in 2013: Smart—a.k.a. online-enabled—everything, mass interconnectivity between gizmos, and growing set-top performance from pocket-sized devices, courtesy of performance-obsessed chipmakers like AMD and Qualcomm.

Related: Best Travel Gadgets

Too busy sprinting between connections to enjoy scene-stealers including 110-inch 4K or OLED (read: ultra-crisp, high-def) televisions and table-sized touchscreens, however? No sweat. Try one of these pocket rockets—among the year's top travel gadgets, and each destined to find a welcome home inside any purse or carry-on—instead. So what if they lack the sheer stopping power of living picture windows the size of billboards? All are infinitely easier to cram in an overhead bin, and infinitely more practical in-flight companion.

Sony Xperia Z (pictured): The most intelligent thing about this hyper-powered 'smart' phone? Not the device's 4G LTE high-speed performance, quad-core Snapdragon processor (read: serious computing muscle) and 13MP camera, which produces images on-par with point-and-shoot rivals. Rather, think real-world practicality: An anti-shatter 1080p HD screen, dustproof jacket and water-resistant capabilities guard against spills on pavements or accidental swan dives into hotel toilets. Be glad for the insurance—its price tag could set you back upwards of $800.

Spare One Cell Phone: Dial H for 'Hallelujah.' A $99 emergency cellie capable of holding a charge 15 years, this little lifesaver also runs on just one AA battery. Don't have a SIM card handy? You can still dial 911 if a GSM tower's nearby. Providing up to 10 hours of talk time—more than enough to say HEEEEEEEEEELP!—it also offers emergency tracking features, extreme weatherproofing and a built-in light source. Action sports buffs and extreme tourists should put it on speed dial.

Trakdot Luggage Tracker: You've just touched down in Barbados—unfortunately, your suitcase hasn't. Thankfully, you can pinpoint its exact location with this black-and-orange, GSM chip-equipped monitor, packable in any bag, then easily tracked using a companion app, or email/text updates. Costing $49.95 plus $12.99 annually, the notepad-sized and FAA-approved gizmo (battery-powered, it automatically sleeps once aircraft reach certain speeds) travels with ease. Whether you will too presumably depends on what time zone said luggage has arrived in.

NVIDIA Project Shield: That hyper-powered PlayStation Vita gaming handheld? So 2012, man. Today's kids (including us oversized ones) will instead soon be raving over PC chipmaker NVIDIA's take on portable play, which marries a traditional button-/joystick-sporting pad with 5-inch HD clamshell touchscreen. Paying $40 for stripped-down versions of set-top amusements? Forget that: Able to run Android apps and output them to TV via HDMI cable, or stream computer games over a WiFi network, you can enjoy endless alternative lo- or hi-fi experiences to go on-demand.

Polaroid iM1836: Add the Android operating system (think one-touch photo sharing apps and easy upload to WiFi networks), Bluetooth support and interchangeable lenses, and voila—you get a $400 connected digital camera. While shutterbugs will appreciate the compact's features, which include 18MP photos, 1080p HD video capture, and 10-300mm f/3-5.6 zoom options, online-enabled upsides prove equally promising as multimedia creation abilities and swappable perspectives. Think downloadable applications that endlessly extend the device's features, and boundless potential for fun Facebook posts.

Lenovo Yoga 11S: Many tablet makers opted for a 'bigger is better' strategy this year, cranking out ridiculously oversized 18.4-inch to 27-inch models, while others (see: Razer's Edge gaming unit) focused purely on ratcheting up horsepower. So from practicality's standpoint, this year's most promising portable computing pick actually takes the form of a so-called 'ultrabook' (lightweight touchscreen) PC that mimics slate computers' best features instead. Running Windows 8, the lightweight $799 unit actually folds to become a tablet on-command, offering travel-ready flexibility without sacrificing laptop-level performance.

Flexible Samsung phone coming soon by 2013

Samsung will soon begin mass production of phones with displays using plastic rather than glass, a move that will make mobile devices unbreakable and bendable. Using a plastic polymer instead of glass, Samsung has produced displays that can roll and bend, and survive falls and blows from the clumsiest of customers.

Samsung is seeking to differentiate itself from other mobile brands in an increasingly cutthroat marketplace, and flexible displays could boost their profile by offering a unique product.

In January 2011, Samsung purchased Liquivista, a strategic acquisition that will allow it to produce the kinds of displays that were announced today. Liquivista made electro wetting display technology, which is used to create mobile and other consumer electronic displays that are bright, low-power, flexible and transparent.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), used in televisions and Smartphone, have made the flexible phone technology possible, as they are compact and can withstand being placed on ductile materials such as plastic and foil.

The flexible AMOLED display technology looks like a glimpse of the future, but for now, its potential is limited by the other components that make up a Smartphone, such as batteries and chips. So it’s not likely that we will see a truly bendable device in the near future. But even if you can’t roll it or bend it, a flexible display has its advantages.

Most importantly, smart phones fitted with flexible AMOLEDs will be incredibly resistant to shock, almost unbreakable. Flexible AMOLED replace the traditional glass substrate with a polyamide, a type of bendable plastic that doesn’t shatter.

Samsung has been one of the key players in developing this bendable, twistable, and near-indestructible screen tech, along with the likes of Sony and Nokia.

In December 2011 the company released a concept video showing off its bendy AMOLED screen tech, while in May this year the company claimed there was “huge” demand for the tech from its partners.

This time last year a Samsung representative claimed that the first flexible devices would arrive sometime in 2012, but it now seems that pledge is not going to come to fruition.

A Korean VP told the press that products with flexible screens are coming “within a year”. Hopefully, this means that we’ll be able to twist our phones later this year, or in the worst case, in the first quarter of 2013. The technology will first be introduced in Smartphone, and later sized up or down for other applications, including wearable computers, tablets, or even TVs. How mobile technology is revolutionizing in-store shopping

There’s mobile technology-driven change brewing in the way you shop at brick-and-mortar stores.
Disappearing are the days when you walked in and headed blindly for the sales section; or located a much needed item then headed straight for the checkout counter. Retailers from Bed, Bath & Beyond to RadioShack are investing in new e-commerce technology that encourages consumers—often with smartphones in hand—to shop strategically for deals inside physical stores.
By “checking in” with your mobile device after you walk into a retail store—and offering some personal data including your location—shops in turn offer targeted digital deals right to your smartphone for immediate redemption. Retailers see enormous potential in marrying the physical-store experience with our growing dependence on smartphones. And that’s why a growing crop of startup software and technology companies are mining this fast-evolving e-commerce space.
Digby, a small company of 50 based in Austin, Texas, was founded five years ago and has been working with brick-and-mortar stores to leverage technology that includes location-specific messaging to target consumers on the ground.
“The more profound opportunity for them is how mobile is going to impact how they engage with customers in and around their stores,” said David Sikora, Digby’s founder and chief executive. “The smartphone is so personal that you’ll never go anywhere without it.”
Rapidly evolving mobile commerce is among the key trends at the National Retail Federation‘s annual New York City expo and convention, which runs through Wednesday.

Shopping on Smartphones, Tablets

To be clear, the mobile platform solutions offered by Digby and its competitors don’t directly tackle the issue of shopping on phones.
Smartphone screens are small and navigating your way from a shirt, for example, to final payment isn’t a consistently seamless experience yet. Despite the room for improvement, mobile devices accounted for about 11 percent of total U.S. retail e-commerce sales in 2012, according to eMarketer research. The figure is expected to grow to 15 percent this year, with shopping using tablets also gaining ground.
More stores, meanwhile, are migrating to digital payment platforms. PayPal this week announced it’s expanding its payment service to more brick-and-mortar retailers such as RadioShack and Dollar General stores. PayPal, EBay’s payments subsidiary, already is accepted at Barnes & Noble, Foot Locker and the Home Depot among other retailers. Separately, PayPal is also unveiling a pilot program in Emeryville, Calif., with smoothie chain Jamba Juice that lets customers order ahead using a PayPal app.

IBC is always full of exciting gear announcements, and this year Blackmagic and Sony didn’t disappoint. Blackmagic announced a new version of their Digital Cinema Camera; this one with a passive Micro 4/3 mount. With a sensor size somewhere between Super 16mm and four thirds, the Canon-mount version of the BMCC had some people concerned about getting a wide angle lens on the camera. Canon has wonderful lenses, but they are generally designed for larger sensors. This new M43 version of the camera allows for wider lenses to be used on the camera. At the same time, it can be adapted to just about any mount. Adapters from Micro 4/3rd to Nikon, PL, Leica, and others are available already. Otherwise, the camera is the same as the original announced at NAB ’12. Look for the new camera to ship at the end of the year.

Sony also announced an addition to their camera lineup. The PMW-160 adds another option in Sony’s PMW 50Mbps 422 recording series, which includes the PMW-100, PMW-200 and PMW-500. The PMW-160 has three 1/3″ EXMOR sensors and a 20x lens. It records to SxS cards, Memory Stick, SDHC and XQD cards via adapters. Additionally, it features SDI output, timecode in & out, and genlock which make it well-equipped for multi-camera use. With a wifi adapter, the PMW-160 can even be controlled by a tablet or other mobile device. Expect the camera to ship in December with a list price of $7,790.

Finally, Sony has also added a new deck to their lineup, the PMW-50 SxS field deck. It offers the ability to play back content on set and transfer data to external drives. Featuring a 3.5″ LCD panel for viewing content, and it can also work as an ingest station into an NLE. Watch for the PMW-50 in December at a list price of $5,740.
