An all natural whitening aloe vera toothpaste. Free from fluoride and sodium lauryl sulphate.

Anderra rating

4/5

Average cost

£3.42 (100ml)

Product

100% natural origin

Not Suitable for Vegetarians due to inclusion of marine source ingredient (chitosan)

Contains no Fluoride

Contains no SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate)

How does it work?

Aloe Vera - naturally soothing gel

Tea Tree Oil - a natural antiseptic

Silica - the natural whitener

P.V.P - anti staining

Peppermint - natural flavour

Menthol - natural flavour

Vitamin K - for strong healthy teeth

"Promotes healthy gums and whitens teeth discoloured by tea & coffee, smoking, red wine and staining".

Previous to this product I had used the AloeDent Aloe Vera Toothpaste from the range. The main difference (apart from the whitening) between these two products is the mildness. I thought the whitening toothpaste would be much stronger than the plain aloe vera version - which I found a bit strong for my mouth. This however is much much milder, even for a whitening toothpaste which means it can be used everyday if you have a sensitive mouth.

The texture of this toothpaste was alot more pleasant than many whitening toothpastes which I find a bit thick and gritty to use. The whitening particles (silica) are very small because I wasn't aware of them when brushing my teeth. The toothpaste was much thinner than the non-whitening version which mean't the cap had a tendency to fill up with toothpaste and was a bit dribbly to put onto my toothbrush.

And so, to the important part - the whitening power! I don't smoke, drink coffee or tea (apart from herbal teas) or much red wine so I don't have particularly stained teeth anyway. I've been using it for about 6-8 weeks now and I don't have a 'Beverly Hills' smile but my teeth do look very clean. I therefore feel this is a preventative measure rather than something that is going to restore heavily stained teeth back to pearly white.

AloeDent's whitening toothpaste only costs £3.42 for 100ml from Trust William which is a very competitive price compared to non-natural alternatives which usually fall around the £5 mark. This is also cheaper than many other online retailers for this product.

Overall a very mild, pleasant toothpaste and a good natural alternative. If you find alot of whitening toothpastes too strong this would be a good product to try.

Packaging

Outer cardboard box

Squeezy plastic tube with screw cap lid

Summary

Pros: Very mild, smooth texture

Cons: A bit thin and gloopy

Ingredients

Glycerin (Vegatable Source), Sorbitol (plant Origin), Hydrated Silicate (Mineral Origin), Aloe barbadensis, Aqua, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate (protein Derivative), Mentha Piperita (peppermint Oil), PVP (Whitener), Xanthan Gum (Natural Origin), Menthol (natural origin), Phytonadione (Vitamin K), Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree OiI),Xylitol (plant origin), Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate (protein origin), Citric Acid, CI 75810 (Chlorophyll-Natural Colouring).

A paraben and perfume free aloe vera gel for soothing dry, damaged skin and irritated skin.

Anderra rating

4/5

Average cost

£4.99 (200ml)

Product

99.9% bioactive aloe vera

Made from 100% pure aloe vera inner gel

No SLS or SLES

No parabens

No perfumes

No colours

Aloe Purity certified by the International Aloe Science Council

"This paraben-free Aloe Vera gel moisturises, softens and helps restore dry and damaged skin. It can be applied to stretch marks, scars, dry, chapped skin, sun burn, skin irritations and minor burns".

Aloe Pura's aloe vera gel is a great multi purpose product.

Aftersun

This is a fantastic product for sunburn. My skin absorbed it much quicker than traditional aftersun cream when tends to sit on the surface of my skin for a long time. When stored at room temperature the aloe vera gel felt pretty cold on contact with my skin. I like to put mine in the fridge so it's extra cold and sometimes add mashed/pureed cucumber to make it a bit more interesting. I don't think I'll be buying another tube of aftersun again as the aloe vera gel has worked much better.

Base for homemade products

Aloe Pura's aloe vera gel is fragrance free which makes it an ideal base for homemade products. You can add your own essential oils to make a scented gel, or use it as a base for other skin treatments.

As well as pure aloe vera, this product is sold in a couple of variations: aloe vera gel with tea tree oil and aloe vera gel with vitamins A, C and E.

General moisturiser

This product is a great moisturiser and soaked into my skin almost immediately. It left my face a little shiney for the first few minutes but this went away quite quickly. I think this could be a great product to use if you have oily skin because it doesn't leave any residue at all.

Aloe Vera gel is a great staple product for bathroom cabinets because it can be used for so much: sunburn, minor irritations, chapped skin, insect bites, rashes, dry skin, scars, stretch marks and homemade products.

Packaging

Clear plastic squeezy tube

Plastic stick-on label

Screw cap

Summary

Pros: Very soothing, fragrance free

Cons: None

Aloe Barbadensis, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylare Crosspolymer, Panthenol, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide, Phanoxyethanol, Potassium sorbate, Benzoic Acid.

A shred resistant nylon floss coated with beeswax and aloe vera to help glide between teeth.

Anderra rating

3/5

Average cost

£2.44 (30 metres)

Product

Shred resistant nylon floss

Coated with natural beeswax and aloe vera

Aloe mint flavour

"The Shred Resistant Nylon Floss is coated in natural Beeswax to help glide between teeth and prevent inter-dental decay and discolouration".

I usually buy dental tape rather than floss because my teeth overlap slightly at the front of my bottom jaw. I was pretty pleased with Aloe Dent's floss, because even though its floss rather than tape, it was still fairly thin (I have bought floss in the past that I haven't been able to fit between any of my teeth!).

I had no problems moving it between the majority of my teeth, but ran into a few problems with those that overlapped. I found it quite difficult to get between them and if the floss got stuck it shredded which made it even harder to remove and I sometimes had to pull it out sideways. The box said this product is shred resistant, which for the most part it was.

AloeDent floss is coated with beeswax, aloe vera and mint to help it glide between teeth - resulting in a subtle rather than fake minty flavour.

The cost is very competitive with most brand name products and cheaper than the Oral B floss I was using at £3.49.

Overall, this product is worth a try if you want something that is coated with natural waxes, but it could be too thick if you have teeth that are tightly together or overlapping. I have searched around but unfortunately AloeDent don't make dental tape, only floss.

Packaging

Cardboard backing

Plastic moulded front

White plastic flip top floss box

Summary

Pros: Natural beeswax and aloevera coating

Cons: Nylon rather than natural fibres - takes longer to degrade

Ingredients

A gentle, tropical scented sugar scrub made from cold pressed, certified organic virgin Fijian coconut oil.

Anderra rating

5/5

Average cost

£21.99 (20 oz / 566 grams)

Product

Certified USDA organic

Certified Oregon Tilth organic

Made in the Fiji Islands

Cold Pressed

BUAV bunny approved

FairTrade

"Organic Fiji Sugar Polish is a gentle exfoliant that doesn't sting or scratch the skin and is a simple way to transform dull, dry skin into a beautiful glow. Sugar is a natural glycolic acid which helps slough off dead skin cells and promote cell rejuvenation, while the anti-oxidant rich coconut oil penetrates to replenish, moisturise, and nourish the skin with vitamins".

Most sugar scrubs contain sugar and a liquid oil to make them soft and fluffy. Organic Fiji sugar polish scrub is different because it contains coconut oil which solidifies at temperatures below 76F. When I wanted to use it, all I had to do was put it in the shower with me for a few minutes and it was ready to use in a few minutes. On warmer days, the heat from my hands was enough to make it malleable which I actually preferred to heating it up to a runny oil.

I absolutely loved the smell of this product. It was like rubbing a non alcoholic pina colada onto my skin! If you don't like the sound of the pineapple coconut scent, it's also available in Cucumber Melon, Fragrance Free, Lavender and Lemongrass Tangerine.

The texture of the sugar was very fine so there was no scratchiness or redness on my skin after use. I thought it would be a bit too rough for my face, but I was pleasantly surprised because it was very gentle. After I'd washed the scrub off, a small amount of coconut oil remained on my skin. This was just just enough to leave me feeling moisturised rather than greasy with product build up. I didn't need to use any moisturiser afterwards and my skin still felt beautifully soft.

If you use fake tanning lotion, I think this would be an excellent product to use for pre-tan exfoliation.

Fantastic product - works brilliantly, smells amazing!

A light but highly moisturising cold pressed body oil made from certified organic, virgin Fijian coconut oil.

Anderra rating

5/5

Average cost

£8 (3 oz / 89 ml) - also available in 12oz bottles

Product

Certified USDA organic

Certified Oregon Tilth organic

99% Organic

Made in the Fiji Islands

Cold Pressed

BUAV bunny approved

Organic Fiji Lavender Coconut oil is a great multi purpose product. I have used it as a face and body moisturiser, shaving oil, hair conditioner and massage oil...and I'm sure there are lots of other uses for it too.

"Coconut Oil in it's purest form is one of the most natural ways to moisturise and treat dry and irritated skin and can be used as an intensive treatment for damaged hair. Rich in vitamins and anti-oxidants, Coconut Oil is a true gift from nature".

This product is different from most body oils in that it's solid rather than liquid (solidifies at temperatures lower than 76f F). Coconut oil melts very easily when it comes into contact with warmth - whether it be from contact with the skin or in a warm room. Whilst I was showering, I put the bottle in the shower with me and it liquified and was ready to use by the time I had finished showering. Once it had melted, the texture was very fine, sleek and lighter than many body oils.

For massage

My favorite use for this product was massage. Even if it wasn't melted fully, I could squeeze a chunk out into my hands and it melted almost instantly. The texture was very light, smooth and didn't leave any oily residue on skin or sheets. It created the perfect amount of glide without being too oily. Coconut oil is much lighter than almond oil, so would make a good choice for those prone to oily skin.

For shaving

This product makes a great shaving oil because it's light but very moisturising. Using this meant I didn't have to moisturise my legs afterwards and I didn't have to buy a separate shaving product!

Face and body moisturiser

The fragrance of Organic Fiji's lavender coconut oil was quite subtle so I didn't have any hesitations using it on my face - my skin is usually quite sensitive to fragrance, but I didn't have any problems.

Hair conditioner

I found two ways to use it for my hair. The first was as an intensive conditioner. I applied it to dry hair (seemed to work better than applying it to wet hair) and then applied shampoo before I put water in my hair, which removed all traces of the oil. The second was as a hair serum on the ends and to fly away bits of hair - a great alternative to hair serums packed with silicons and propylene glycol.

You can use this product for so much, which makes it excellent value for money!

Organic Fiji Coconut oil body lotion is available in other fragrances: Cucumber Melon, Fragrance Free, Lemongrass Tangerine and Pineapple Coconut.

Packaging

Recyclable plastic packaging made from recycled components

The bottle was easy to use when the product had fully melted, but the hole in the lid got a bit blocked when the product re-solidified.

Summary

Pros: Multipurpose product packed full of nutrients

Cons: A bit difficult to get out of the bottle if it hasn't fully melted

A pure mineral salt deodorant stick - free from everything except mineral salts!

Anderra rating

5/5

Average cost

£4.39 (100g)

Product

Natural bacteriostatic action

Does not block pores

No aluminium chlorohydrate or aluminium zirconium

No propellants

"PitRok deodorant prevents bacteria from multiplying without blocking pores – no bacteria no odour! Excellent, extremely long lasting protection leaves no white marks on clothes and dries quickly while allowing the elimination of toxins".

I had seen these sticks around and if I am honest was slightly skeptical. But after having a reaction to deodorant, I decided to give Pitrok's crystal deodorant a go as it contains no aluminium or other pore blocking ingredients. Then I stumbled across Jorge Gacia's (Hurley from Lost) blog where he was saying how well it worked. So I figured if it keeps whiff at bay on a tropical island, it will work here in England! :)

I've tried a few other natural deodorants and found them to be effective for a short while but after a while I get a little smelly. However, I have been massivly impressed with this product. I really didn't expect it to work so well. You rub the stone under your arms after you have showered and your underarms are still wet. Rubbing this on my underarm felt quite strange as I was literally rubbing a smooth stone on my arm pit - it doesn't smell of anything and I couldn't see anything. You can also apply this stone after you have shaved your underarms and there is no stinging.

The main thing to bear in mind with this product is that it's a deodorant not an antiperspirant - it will stop odour forming but will not stop you sweating. I had been wearing it all day, cycled to my local supermarket, cycled back with a backpack full of food and cooked dinner in a warm kitchen and no smell! So I have no hesitations in recommending this product.

The cheapest place I've found to buy Pitrok Crystal Deodorant is Sainsburys supermarket for £4.39. I've also seen a travel sized stone for £2.14 (non Pitrok brand) in Whole Foods which is ideal if you don't want to buy a massive stick of it.

This range of deodorant is also available as an unscented spray, a scented spray and an original stone (not in a push up container).

Packaging

Plastic push up stick

A natural shampoo for dry, thirsty hair, packed with fruit oils and essential oils.

Anderra rating

5/5

Average cost

£10.75 (250ml)

Product

For dry, damaged or colour treated hair

pH balanced

Made in New Zealand

Free from: PEGs, parabens, sls, fillers, synthetic colours, synthetic fragrances, gmo dervied ingredients, harsh surfactants, detergents, pesticide or herbicide residues and animal by-products

Certified organic rosehip oil

100% natural ingredients

"Made with natural moisturising ingredients such as Marshmallow, Coconut fruit, Avocado and Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil, our products rescue tired, damaged hair, improving the hair’s texture, strength and appearance".

Trilogy's gentle moisturising conditioner is great product, without doubt the best natural conditioner I have tried.

The texture is light and silky rather than thick creamy like many conditioners formulated for dry or damaged hair. My hair is quite fine so products that contain silicones tend to build up easily. Using something as light as this has meant I haven't needed to wash my hair as much because its not coated in a layer of silicone. Although it's very light, it is still very moisturising and left my hair soft and silky. Aisde from working brilliantly, it also smells divine - a delicate, tropical scent of coconut.

This product is on average £10 for 250ml which makes it a middle of the range conditioner in terms of price. But as it's quite concentrated the bottle has lasted me for a very long time. Add to that the bonus of not having to wash my hair as much and it becomes excellent value for money.

Other Trilogy products in the Gentle Moisturising range include Gentle Moisturising Shampoo and a Botanical Moisture Masque.

Great product, I'm sticking with it!

Packaging

Brown plastic bottle

Black plastic flip top lid

Summary

Pros: Light but very moisturising

Cons: None...

A pH balanced, biodegradable goat milk based shampoo rich in milk and rice proteins.

Anderra rating

4/5

Average cost

£5.50 (250ml)

Product

For normal hair

EcoCert certified - 13.1% organic ingredients

Biodegradable

99% natural ingredients

pH 5.5

Made in Canada

"With its high content in repairing proteins from goats milk and rice, plus protective moringa, this daily shampoo will balance and strengthen your hair".

The first thing that struck me about Druide Goat Milk shampoo was the density - but instead of being thick and greasy it was almost 'drier' than most shampoos, almost as if I could feel tiny particles of almond and rice . The consistency of the shampoo was great for dry hair as it kept the frizz away without weighing it down or leaving a greasy residue like many moisturising shampoos do. I needed to rinse my hair quite alot to get all the product out - I think it would be okay to use if you have greasy hair but just make sure you rinse it out well.

This shampoo contains very mild natural foamers like lauryl glucoside, so it didn't produce a massive amount of lather, but just enough to make it feel like it was cleaning my hair.

The almond in this product makes it smell like cherry bakewells - ideal if you have a sweet tooth or don't want something that smells traditionally natural and herbal. Although the almond smell is quite strong, the product doesn't contain any synthetic fragrance, so it's all natural!

I've been very impressed with how long this shampoo has lasted me. I only need to use a 10p sized amount for my below shoulder length hair, so it's very economical.

The price is good value for money as it works better than some shampoos I have paid double the price for.

Packaging

Clear #2 plastic - HDPE

Summary

Pros: Smells great, keeps frizz under control

Cons: Quite dense, needs to be rinsed out thoroughly

Ingredients

Active ingredients: Hawthorn, Milk Thistle, Goat Milk, Moringa, Rice Proteins, Ylang Ylang, Bitter Orange, Rosewood, Bitter Almond, Gaiac Wood, Sandalwood, Kokum Seed

Average cost

Product

Accepted by the American Dental Association

No synthetic waxes

No artifical sweeteners or flavours

No artificial preservatives

Unflavoured

Contains propolis

"Our naturally waxed antiplaque flat floss is made of many strong nylon filaments woven together to prevent snapping or fraying and prepared with a unique combination of natural waxes".

I did not have a joyous experience with this dental floss. One of the main problems with it was that it split very easily when I put it between my teeth and sometimes when I was pulling it out from the box. This made it a bit painful to use and pull out from between my teeth easily - especially those that are very close together or overlap slightly.

Although this is flat floss, it was still quite thick. If you have small gaps between your teeth, I would not recommend this floss.

If it wasn't for the fraying, I would be more likely to use this product again. It's one of very few naturally waxed dental flosses available and is reasonably priced.

Tom's of Maine Dental Floss is available in unflavoured and spearmint.

Packaging

100% recycled paperboard outer box printed with soy ink

Paper insert

Clear plastic floss container

Summary

Pros: Naturally waxed

Cons: Frays very easily making it uncomfortable to use

A light and easily absorbed moisturiser with italian red mandarin and roses.

Anderra rating

3/5

Average cost

$36/£28 (60ml)

Product

Suitable for vegans

Red Mandarin: regenerative, nurturing, elevating

Rose: anti-wrinkle, hydrating, balancing

I bought this moisturiser because I have dry skin, especially in Winter when the central heating goes on. However, it was not as moisturing as I'd hoped it would be. The cream was light and soaked in very quickly, but didn't give my skin the moisture boost it needed or relieve tightness, so I feel it's better suited to people with normal skin.

The cream smelt nice but wasn't really what I was expecting as it smelt more like herbs rather than orange and rose. It was also quite strong (although not overpowering).

I bought this cream when I went to New York, so it cost much less than it would if I bought it in the UK. Although it contains alot of high quality natural ingredients, it wasn't moisturing enough for me to spend £28 on.

Overall a good quality cream, full of natural ingredients, but not moisturising enough for me.

Packaging

Zero waste egg cartons box with cardboard belly band

Brown glass bottle with plastic pump lid

Label screen printed directly onto the bottle

Once you have finished with the packaging, you can plant it in the ground. Seeds are embedded in the egg carton.

Summary

Pros: Zero waste, high quality ingredients

Cons: Not overly moisturising
