Free Photos for Pro-Choice Democratic Candidates!

2017-02-22T18:27:00.002-08:00

Andie Petkus Photography is now offering free head shots to all pro-choice candidates who are running for elected office as Democrats.

These photos will be taken at my studio at 2828 NE Alberta Street - inside the Black United Fund Building.

High resolution images (printable at up to 5x7" at 300dpi) from the shoot will then be posted to an online gallery. One photo can be selected for editing and will be copied and changed to black and white. This photo will be appropriate to submit to the Voter's Pamphlet. All of the images that I approve will also be available and can be used however the candidate wishes - for campaign or for personal use.

I will take these photos as my schedule permits, but I will do my best to be available. It is best to contact me on my personal email: petkusa@yahoo.com to schedule a time.

The retail value is $100 and I will provide an invoice that documents my in-kind donation to the campaign.

Here are my helpful hints for head shots:

Studio inside the Black United Fund Building – 2828 NE Alberta St., Suite 100

-There is a fenced parking lot behind the Black United Fund building off of 29th Ave., if you can't find parking on Alberta. It looks different from the front of the building and there are no signs for the Black United Fund, but you are in the right place.

-The glass door in back is always locked, but just knock on it and I will come and let you in. The glass front door is usually unlocked during office hours.

-I will arrive 10 minutes before the time we arrange to set up my lights. If I am not there when you arrive, I will be there soon. Feel free to call or text me at 503-314-5851 to let me know you have arrived.

The Photo Shoot:

-The shoot should only take 15 minutes

-You are welcome to bring more than one shirt or jacket.

-I will post the photos in an online gallery and I will email you a link so you can select your favorite.

-I will edit the photo that you select so that it is appropriate for the Voter's Pamphlet.
-A copyright release will be posted at the top of the gallery and you will be free to use the photo for other campaign or personal uses.

-I will email you an invoice which will document my in-kind donation to your campaign.

Here are the rules from the Voter's Pamphlet section of the website:
http://sos.oregon.gov/elections/Documents/VPManual.pdf
Candidates may include a photograph for publication with the candidate statement.
To be included in the voters’ pamphlet a candidate's photograph must be:
filed electronically using ORESTAR in .png, .jpg, .gif or .bmp format
less than four years old when filed, front facing, showing the face, neck and shoulders only. Hands shall not be shown.

Preferred Photograph Format
It is preferred that a candidate’s photograph be:
1.5” x 1.75” in size
portrait style
black and white
matte finish
Photographs must not:
display anything in the background (this includes, but is not limited to, backdrops, landscaping, paneling,
wallpaper, signs)
show the candidate wearing clothing which indicates a profession or organization (this includes, but is not
limited to, judicial robes, any type of uniform, religious clothing, hats)
display any symbols which indicate a profession, organization or belief (this includes, but is not limited to,
jewelry in the shape of religious symbols, lapel pins of any organization)
Photographs which do not meet the above criteria maybe cropped and airbrushed and the cost billed to the candidate.
Photographs will not be returned to the candidate or the candidate's campaign for review before or after
printing of the voters' pamphlet.

Clothing Tips: (The Voter's Pamphlet crops these photos pretty close to the neck, so not much clothing shows.)

-We will only be photographing you from the waist up, so don’t worry about your pants.

-Select clothes that portray the image you think will increase voter response.

-Select clothes that make you feel good and that you think look good on you.

-Make sure clothes are ironed and don’t look worn out. Remove pet hair and fuzzies.

-Choose a color that is flattering to your skin and eyes. (You will also have access to the color photos, not just black and white)

-Avoid small stripes and patterns – they can look like they are moving when viewed on a monitor.

-Avoid bare arms.

-Avoid plunging necklines because the shirt may not appear in the photo at all and it will look like you aren’t wearing anything. Select a neckline that is flattering to your neck and face.

-Try to select clothes that fit well. Avoid gaps between buttons.

-Make sure glasses are clean.

-Keep jewelry simple.

Grooming:

-If you color your hair, be sure that roots are covered.

-If you need a haircut, try to get it a few days before the photo.

-Please make sure your hair is dry. Wet hair can look dirty in photos.

-Bring a brush or comb.

-Bring lip balm or lipstick.

-Floss your teeth.

-If you have shiny skin, please bring face powder.

-->

-Men should shave right before they come in for a photo. (Razor cuts can be Photoshopped, but stubble cannot.)

Let me know if you have any questions about this offer!

September 6th at the DNC

2012-09-06T22:30:00.000-07:00

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan came by for breakfast and the Oregon delegation broke out their green t-shirts for the occasion and for a group photo.

Great music by James Taylor! (Jimmy Fallon did a really funny parody of this performance...)

Mary J. Blige!

and the Foo Fighters!

Gabby Giffords led the Pledge of Allegiance.

One of the veterans onstage is Jake from Oregon.

So Joe...

I had to keep pinching myself! I couldn't believe that I was there for the renomination of Barack Obama for President. The Convention was inspiring and I hope the momentum builds over the next two months!

2012-09-05T22:30:00.000-07:00

Michelle's brother, Craig Robinson, popped by to greet the Oregon delegation at breakfast. He's an Oregonian now.

Gabby Douglas led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Democratic Party of Oregon Executive Director Trent Lutz with Senator Jeff Merkley.

Enthusiastic Convention Volunteer.

Former Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright.

Michael Dukakis chats with John Kerry.

Senator Ron Wyden, State Rep. Lew Frederick and Senator Jeff Merkley.

The many faces of Bill Clinton. Apparently, the speech on the teleprompter only had 3,000 words, but the final speech had closer to 6,000 words. I think Chris Rock said "I deserve a Bachelor's Degree after listening to Bill's speech."

The Oregon Delegation gives its votes to Barack Obama in the Roll Call that ended well after midnight.

September 4th at the DNC

2012-09-04T22:30:00.000-07:00

We started the day with a pep talk by Howard Dean at breakfast.

Finally found the Planned Parenthood rally just in time to see Sandra Fluke and Cecile Richards speak. There was a little confusion about how to get to the rally and many people arrived late. I was bummed because they ran out of "Yes We Plan" t-shirts.

Yay! The Convention has begun!

Amber Riley of Glee belted out the National Anthem.

Wolf Blitzer and Ray Suarez were on the floor amongst the people.

An inspirational gathering of Demcoratic Congresswomen.

The Oregon Delegation got GREAT seats this time! At the 2008 Convention, they were way up to one side.

Sikhs for Obama! (From the California delegation.)

Wow! Tammy Duckworth in 2016? Or Michelle/Hillary?

The Creative Coalition sent Hugh Jackman, John Leguizamo, Patricia Arquette andWyne Knight (Newman on Seinfeld) and I was sitting two rows behind them. I admit that I didn't recognize any of them on my own - someone had to point them out to me.

Michelle was amazing! Just right...

Lupita and Kathryn await the bus to "uptown" for CarolinaFest. Kathryn later got interviewed by John Oliver of the Daily Show!

KC got stopped about 1 minute after she entered the Convention Center for an interview with Fox News.

Gregg and Patrick model some Convention fashions.

This is the Time Warner Arena - where the big speeches took place.

It was HOT and humid, of course. I was glad to get this nice fan from a NARAL volunteer.

CarolinaFest featured two stages. Jeff Bridges and James Taylor played, but it had started raining by the time they kicked off, so I didn't stick around.

Every campaign needs its won NASCAR!

The "Hug a Thug" booth was one of my favorites!

A volunteer I met at the media training got to portray Queen Charlotte at the North Carolina delegate party.

And of course Senator Kay Hagan popped by to visit with her NC peeps.

Reverend Jesse Jackson at the MSNBC stage.

One of the many NC downpours - When it rains it really rains!

Dinner at Mert's was delicious!

Andie at the Democratic National Convention - Day 2

2012-09-02T22:30:00.000-07:00

Today started off quietly. I visited with some Oregon delegates over breakfast then "froggered" across 4 lanes of traffic over to Target to get some stuff. Got a chance to catch up on some photo editing and then it was time to go to the welcome parties.

The Levine Museum of the New South was a lovely building right in "uptown" Charlotte that features a modern history of the South. The caterers served a mix of "bubbie food" and traditional southern fare and the band was a lot of fun. The Oregon delegation hung out with Washington and Colorado.

This is a "grit-ini" - basically grits in a martini glass.

Oregon is not known for its dance culture. Most of these folks are from Washington and Colorado.

Reverend Jesse Jackson walked by - three times!

The parties tonight were really fun. I met a TON of nice people.

Andie at the Democratic National Convention - First Day

2012-09-02T11:28:00.002-07:00

Hi Everyone!

Well, everything finally fell into place (I wasn't sure it would) and here I am in Charlotte, NC! Flew in yesterday afternoon and took a cab out to the edge of town where I am staying in the same hotel as the Oregon Delegation. It's a bit out of the way, but there is a bus that will take us straight downtown and I got a free bus pass, so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm glad I can hang out with Oregonians while I am here. My roommate is the chair of the Multnomah County Democrats and she is a hoot, so I think this will be the place to be for Convention 2012.

I'm going to try to blog about my experience as much as I can. I got too busy in 2008 to post more than a couple of times, but I will do my best.

I had to come to town early so I could be here for a media training from 4-6 today, but my first shoot isn't until Tuesday night. I told the Oregon Dems that I'd be happy to help out and so I spent a couple of hours this morning helping to stuff goody bags for the delegates. (They have some good stuff in there - Oregon has so many cool companies who were willing to donate!)

I then took a little stroll up to the University of North Carolina - Charlotte campus. I had to walk along a busy street that seldom had sidewalks and definitely no crosswalks. I only saw one other person walking and no one on a bicycle. It was a tad warm this afternoon, so perhaps they were judiciously waiting until evening for their outdoor activity. The campus is lovely - very foresty with some buildings that make me think of the "old South."

Headed downtown for my media training and got caught in a crazy rainstorm. At first there were just a few drops of rain, but one minute later, it was coming down sideways with bits of hail. I ducked into the Campaign store to do some shopping and wait it out (at least 4 people asked me where I got my Obamium t-shirt while I was there - check 'em out at www.obamium.com) and it just kept on pouring down, so I ventured out into the storm. I heard that part of the downtown area flooded. I arrived at the training thoroughly soaked, but my camera stayed dry. Met some really nice people. I'm surprised that I am the only one who came back from last time. We had such a fun team in 2008. This team looks like they should be interesting.

Hung out with a woman whose daughter works for the Convention Committee and she helped me find the Time Warner Media Party out at the NC Music Factory. Wow! What an event! Apparently, over 1,500 members of the media are expected this year, so it was a bit party. The shuttle bus that took us from the Convention Center to the Music Factory had a police escort and we were speeding along, weaving in and out of traffic and driving on the wrong side of the road. It was crazy, especially because there were about 20 shuttle buses ferrying people to the site, so lots and lots of cops.

The NC Music Factory area is a collection of restaurants and music venues and we had the whole place for our party. They provided us with lots of free food, booze and great music. I didn't see any famous media personalities (they were probably in the VIP party), but I did meet a nice man who edits video for Brian Williams "Rock Center."

I did see the Mayor of Charlotte, Anthony Foxx, and he introduced several other Governors and political types, but I didn't see them.

I left the media party about half an hour before it shut down in an effort to avoid long lines at the shuttle buses.

Looking forward to Day 2! I'll be hanging out with the Oregon Delegation most of the day.
