EMCCD elucidates individual steps controlling transport through NPCs

Belfast, Northern Ireland, 23 August 2011 - Nuclear Pore Complexes (NPCs), large protein structures which span the nuclear membrane in eukaryotic cells and mediate the exchange of materials between the nucleus and cytoplasm, play a vital role in many aspects of cellular physiology including gene expression. Defects in NPC function are implicated in a number of autoimmune diseases, leukaemias and others cancers. Also, nuclear transport plays a pivotal role in viral infections. However, it has been unclear how the NPC facilitates the selective translocation of macromolecules.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/andortech/~4/W-jEnHyZwoI" height="1" width="1"/>

Sub 60-second identification of MRSA with Andor iStar

January 2011, Belfast, UK: At a time of rising levels of MRSA and other hospital acquired infections, Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has been demonstrated to be a rapid and reliable technique for detection of life-threatening bacterial pathogen species that can be found in such medical environments. For the first time, scientists have used Chemometrics analysis of LIBS data in a blind test to successfully identify five pathogenic bacterial samples and differentiate between strains of a multiple-antibiotic-resistant species. Dr Rosalie Multari and her colleagues at Applied Research Associates believe that the ability to distinguish both species and strains using only raw spectra raises the prospect of rapid diagnostic instrumentation for use both within laboratories and in the field.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/andortech/~4/wfT2db8evYQ" height="1" width="1"/>

High Dynamic Range Imaging with Scientific CMOS

Belfast (Northern Ireland), Milpitas (USA), Kelheim (Germany), 23 July, 2009 - Scientists are reporting that the new sCMOS technology is proving essential for scientific imaging applications because, for the first time, it is allowing for the accurate measurement of structures that are very dim as well as structures that are very bright in the same field of view. Having a camera system with a large dynamic range is therefore important for scientific imaging applications such as fluorescence microscopy.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/andortech/~4/TsgNvUaj5tw" height="1" width="1"/>

More efficient fault detection for solar cells

Common faults in solar cells and panels can now be detected far more simply using two high-performance cameras from Andor Technology – the iKon-M 934 BR-DD and the Luca(EM) R. Both cameras have high quantum detection efficiency and sensitivity in the near-infrared (NIR) range, making them ideal for solar cell quality control during manufacturing. They harness the phenomenon of induced photovoltaic electroluminescence, where weak emissions in the 900-1100nm wavelength range are used to detect typical faults such as shunts, crystalline defects and broken-finger electrodes.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/andortech/~4/bV5dJyW7Aqk" height="1" width="1"/>
