Mini Paintings

6" x 6" - Oil on Cradled Wood Panel

Last year in my Painting II class, the instructor assigned us to do 30 small paintings. We could do them on canvas, stretched or panel, primed foam core, wood, or other suitable surface. I painted some here in the house and on the porch. Some I went out to the plantations a couple of afternoons and painted using my little table top easel. Some I painted from photos I took downtown and around West Ashley. Afterwards, I framed some and put them up for sale at a sale with an artist group. Some actually sold there. Some were much appreciated gifts I needed to come up with that I didn't have to go out and buy. Four or five of them I painted on non-standard size pieces of foam core - bad move since I can't find frames to fit them. So they sit in the studio.
The Artist Guild Gallery wants us to do minis, up to 6"x8" for the annual Christmas Tree. I sold one of those pieces on last year's tree. This year's entries are to be turned in this Sunday... I didn't find the time to paint a new mini, but this morning I went into the bin and came up with three I can use on the tree. Alas, there is now only one framed piece left in the bin, which I will keep as it is one I cannot part with.
So the point is... doing a pile of minis in a short space of time (we did 30 in 30 days) gave me a nice little stash to draw on, and I made some cash on them as well, as well as jump-starting some creativity in me.

"Summer Snowballs"

Yesterday I delivered 30 paintings to be on exhibit at the Coastal Community Foundation through the end of the year. They will mostly reflect my personal view of the Charleston of my youth, some older paintings and some new - some watercolors, some oils. The main piece is "Summer Snowballs", based on summer evening visits with my Daddy to my Uncle Henry's all-night shop on Smith Street. He sold the best "Snowballs" - snow cones of crushed ice and tasty sweet syrups in various flavors. His shop would light up Smith Street. Here is a 1930's photo of Henry Middleton Manigault, (1888-1966).

My models for the painting were Nicholas Roper, 11, my grandson, and Maggie Hazel, 4, my niece. Maggie served as the model both both little girls in the painting. They represent me and my sister, Deda. Here they are at their modeling jobs outside the old store building.

We just returned from a short trip to Weaverville, NC, near Asheville, where we acted as back-up babysitters with the grand-kids while their Mom performed her nursing duties and their Dad played drums with a quartet at Windy Gap. The 3-day camp session served as the kickoff of the school year, as well as a spiritual retreat, for 310 Covenant Day School high school students from Charlotte, NC. The property is quite impressive, set in the mountains, and included a pool, a mountain creek, large lake, horses, go-cart track, zip lines, giant swing, basketball courts, Wiffle ball field, climbing wall, volleyball sand courts, a theater for worship sessions, large dining hall, lots of wonderful food, and great accommodations for adult staff and their families. I'd go back in a heartbeat!!

We just came back from a wonderful trip to East Tennessee - Frank and myself, and daughter Allison and her husband Nate and grandson Nick. We went to Dollywood, Splash Country, a huge water park, and Smoky Mountains National Park. Here are my Travelogue paintings of Cades Cove, a beautiful, pristine, and historical place in Smoky Mountains National Park. We fell in love with the place. Gotta go back!! (Watercolor 5"x16")

WOW! It's been too long since my last BLOG post...too darn busy!! I had a private showing at my house of my art for an out-of-town visitor - former Charlestonian in July. I'm having another one this weekend, I hope. I set up the living room this morning. Here's a peek. If you're ever interested in a studio tour/home show of my pieces, I'm open to it. "Passing By" - Watercolor 14"x20"

I was recently informed that I won the Coastal Community Foundation Griffith/Reyburn Lowcountry Artist Award. I had applied for it through the urging of my brother-in-law, artist Colin Quashie. He thought my art would be a good fit for the intent of the award - to have art that reflects a unique aspect of Lowcountry culture. I applied for it last year and I was not selected, but I received a letter from the Foundation commending me on my application. They said I had been a very strong contender. This year, my Painting III instructor at the College of Charleston read the "Call for Artists" announcement in class, so I pulled out last year's application, tweaked it a little, and re-submitted. The Foundation director called me a couple of weeks ago to say I had won. Along with the wonderful honor, the prize purse is $5000. I have already received $3000 of it, and I will receive the balance when I complete the painting I proposed in the application. I have until September 15, so I'll be busy all summer on this and other "Uptown in Downtown Charleston" pieces. They will have a show of my work later in the year. So I've been walking around on "Cloud Nine" at the wonder and honor of it all.

Pink Azaleas and Pearls

These azaleas grow profusely in my yard. They are a lovely fuchsia/pink color, growling on a bush taller than me! I snipped off this piece and stuck it in an old wine carafe. I gathered some personal items for this painting for a feminine feel – my cupid mirror, a gift from a dear friend Sandra, a dainty teacup and saucer that had belonged to a favorite cousin Weesie, a pearl necklace I found in an old jewelry box deep in my dresser drawer. It's now on exhibit at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery in Charleston. It's also seen on my Etsy site.

Callas in a Brass Pitcher

I saw these Callas in Costco recently and I had to have them - to paint!! I have really been enjoying setting up and painting still life pieces with lights, fabrics, and the various dishes, vases, and such that I have collected over the years. This is painted on a stretched canvas in a lovely gold-finished wood frame.

Azaleas

I haven't posted in a while - too busy with my Painting III class and other stuff. I'm exploring Still Life Painting. I picked these azaleas from my mother-in-law's front yard - the color is redder than the usual fuchsia colored azalea blossoms I have in my yard. The cup and saucer are from my "good china" and I've had a vase so long that I have forgotten where I got it. Azaleas last a long time in water so I didn't have to rush so much to paint them.

Frank and I spent the weekend in Washington DC getting to know our newest grandson, 3-week-old Arrow, son of Frank and Karoline Neville-Hamilton. While there, we visited the American History Museum at the Smithsonian and came across a wonderful exhibit of art and artifacts, the Kinsey Collection, the first private collection at the new African-American gallery. Community Baptist

I turned into a dirt street off Savage Road in West Ashley, Charleston, looking for Community Baptist Church. I had seen a sign on the road, and I was looking for a local and quaint scene to paint. This is it! I parked in back of the building and wondered if I was trespassing. I pulled out my stuff onto the trunk of my car and starting painting. A neighbor came out to put out her trash, but she didn't say anything to me, so I kept at it. I was probably there about an hour and a half or so. I love being outside painting!!!

6"x6" Oil on Wood Panel

This is my first attempt at palette knife painting, also my first painting on a wood panel. I primed the panel with gesso and let it dry a few days. While sitting out at Drayton Hall Plantation , used a brush to paint in the sky, then I used the palette knife to paint in the rest of this scene. As soon as I started it, I realized that I had never even seen a demo of someone painting with a palette knife! Considering all that, I thought it came out pretty good.
