I’ve had a few people ask me what is next in terms of running and I’m going to be doing the Adra Half Marathon on the 29th of November. I’m going to run this with my wife and I’m really looking forward to it as it will be her inaugural half marathon.

However, my next big fitness challenge is to get the 100 push-ups challenge out of the way.

I was very fortunate in that Steve Spiers, who is the mastermind behind the 100 push-ups craze, sent me a copy of his book:

I found the 100 push-ups website quite useful the first few times that I tried to do this challenge but I have to admit that I think the book is much better.

In part 1, Steve starts off with a great introduction about why he started doing push-ups. He’s a runner who was looking for more strength. Similar to me! Except he is really really fast.

The book is a very easy read with lots of interesting tidbits about push-ups. There is some Japanese bloke who has done more than 10000 in a row!

In part 2 we move on to the actual training programs. There are a lot more training programs offered in the book than there are on the website. I think this is a big plus as the one on the website was fairly hardcore and there are quite a lot more pathways for push-up beginners in the book.

In part 3 Steve offers a section on more complicated/challenging push-up types for those who need more challenge. Needless to say I’m not there yet but it’s something to aspire to.

Part 4 is an appendix that has some stretching routines and a program for folks who are not able to do any push-ups yet. It also has a training log but I’d use my computer for that myself.

I found the book easy to read and it has got me inspired to do more push-ups. The last time I attempted the challenge I got up to the mid 40s however, when I did my initial challenge last night I only managed 20 so I’ll report back once a week or so on how I’m going. There is a real sense of achievement in managing to do a lot of push-ups. I suspect it’s a guy thing. What do the ladies think?

I reckon this would make a great Christmas gift for someone who was into fitness!

I did not sleep much last night. I guess I was a bit nervous about the event and that got my brain buzzing. After a lot of tossing and turning I finally fell asleep about 2 minutes before my alarm went off. Well that’s what it felt like!

I have this thing about always being on time and so I like to be ready early so I think I did really well to catch the second ferry of the morning rather than the first – unlike last year!

I was in Devonport at about 5am and I almost immediately bumped into fellow blogger Aaron. We had a good chat about the upcoming event and then headed our separate ways.

The start was at 6:10 AM and I had decided that I was going to try and stick with the 4:15 pace group as that was a pace I had been planning on trying to achieve. In the past my big mistake has been going out too fast and I was determined not to do this again today.

Unfortunately I think this was a mistake. After the first two km there were a few mutterings amongst our group that the pace guy was planning on walking the last 2km so was trying to build up a healthy lead. After 2.5km he headed off to the loo and abandoned us without a so much as a “I’ll be back”. I didn’t see him again till the 4km mark and managed to stick with him up until about the 12km mark. However he was going way too fast. If I look at my time splits I was on pace for a sub 4 hour finish after the first 10 km. I decided to let him go as we hit the rolling hills before the bridge as it was becoming very hard to keep up with him.

I went quite slowly up the bridge as I didn’t want to burn out and it was a good experience. It’s always nice running somewhere you are not normally allowed to run I find!

I started to get a few stomach rumbles and so hit the portaloos along Curran St. I spent a bit too much time in there and I started to get a bit concerned at this point as gastro issues have ruined quite a few of my long runs. For some reason I started to get a rather nasty headache as well. I must admit that at this point I was thinking that the half marathon is a great distance!

My half marathon split was 2:06:37 which was under the time I needed for a 4:15 (even with my extended portaloo stop) so I have proof I was not exaggerating about the 4:15 pace guy being way too fast.

The second half of the race was a bit of a disaster I’m afraid.

There were quite a few portaloo visits. Let me tell you now that you don’t want to go into a portaloo after several thousand runners have gone by…enough said about that.

I really struggled to keep going and I can honestly say that I really did not enjoy most of the second half.

Having said that there were a few fantastic highlights.

My wife, daughter, cousin, cousin-in-law and their kids were at Mission Bay to cheer me on. You have no idea how great it is to see family there cheering you on when you need it. I felt truly blessed to see them.

My wife took this photo of me:

I also saw some of my students out cheering and got a bit cheer from them. That was very nice too.

I’m fairly sure I saw William powering along. He looked to be in much better shape than me but I was a fair distance ahead of him. I guess I built up a bit of a lead in my good first half.

Aaron powered past and looking at his results he had a really good inaugral marathon.

I finished in 4:58:24 which is slower than my last marathon but surprisingly this one was a lot tougher. During the race itself I was rather disappointed but after a great afternoon with my wife and daughter I realise that it was actually an awesome achievement to finish. I always find finishing these things quite emotional and I’m glad I’m in a position to participate. A few years ago I wasn’t and it’s very easy to forget that.

I’m very happy that I did it and I love the medal! We took my daughter to the park in the afternoon and I insisted on wearing my medal!

As you can see in the map below, 42.2 km is a very long way!

Congrats to everyone else who participated. It was a great day for it. Thank you all for your support.

A very special thanks has to go to my beloved wife who has been unfailingly supportive. Marathon training takes a lot of time and she’s had to put up with quite a lot! It was especially great having her and my daughter out on the course today.

P.S. For my Auckland readers Revive restaurant is giving out a free meal to all Auckland Marathon runners on Monday and Tuesday. You just have to take in your running bib (number).

My marathon training program called for a gentle 8 miles as my long run yesterday. It feels a bit ridiculous to be calling 8 miles a long run now but that’s the way it is. I had a great run with my wife. She was having a step back week (her half marathon is at the end of November) and I of course was in my last long run of the taper.

I was full of beans and raring to go which is a bit of a relief after my nasty long run last week. I found the going very easy and had to resist the temptation to power up the hills. It’s amazing how much energy I have after a bit of rest.

We ran out towards St Heliers along Tamaki Drive. There is a pier (which goes out 200 metres or so) that has been closed for a long time due to repair work. Fortunately it was open again so we ran out just for fun:

Altogether we did just over 14km in about 1:26 which was just what the doctor called for.

A year ago this time I was lining up for my first half marathon. That turned out to be a fantastic experience and I’m glad I did it.

I’m psyched for Sunday. I have to go collect my race pack later this week so I’ll probably do another post before the event detailing that.

Posting has been a bit slack this year I’m afraid. But life has been busy and good so I can’t complain too much.

Anyway, today we wanted to do a half marathon but when my alarm woke us up at 5 we were both rather bleary eyed. There was also a rather ominous howl of wind and the sound of torrential rain so my wife turned around and went back to bed! I was sorely tempted to follow her but I was wide awake so I decided to have breakfast and catch up on the news instead.

We eventually managed to get out at about 1:30pm and the conditions didn’t appear to be too bad at first. The rain had reduced to sporadic showers but it was still rather windy.

The first 9 km were with the wind so we were going quite well. Unfortunately as soon as we turned around we both groaned and it just seemed a bit too hard today. We’ve both been sick this week, combine this with the lack of sleep and I just don’t think we were in the running groove to be honest.

Anyway, we ran where we could and walked when the wind got especially strong and in the end we only did 18km rather than our planned 21.1. I’m praying that the Marathon day is not a windy one! I had my fill of that at Christchurch.

Anyway 18.5km in a depressing 2:05:47.

In happier news, we managed to get a walk in at the Orakei Domain. My little monkey enjoyed it very much as you can see!

I have to admit that I’m so glad I decided to get fit. It means a lot to be able to be able to chase my daughter (and the wife!).

We’ve had lots and lots of spring rain for the last two weeks or so so it was really great to wake up and see blue sky for once. My wife and I left home at about 6:30 AM and did a nice gentle loop through Cornwall Park and then headed towards the Auckland Domain. As you can see it was a beautiful morning running through the park:

We then ran along the coast until my wife reached her turnoff towards home. She did her longest run yet (very exciting) at 21.5km which is her first run that is longer than her half marathon distance. I’m very proud of her accomplishment. I’m also more than a little worried that she’s going to smoke my inaugral half marathon time!

I took quite a while to get into my groove on this run. It was only after about 5km that I felt comfortable and running became effortless. I suspect this is because I had to skip two of my midweek runs this week so the legs needed a bit more warming up than usual. On Tuesday I was at work bright and early and didn’t get home till about 9:30 pm due to having to attend Graduation (as a staff member not a graduand) at The University of Auckland where I work. On Wednesday I was at work bright and early as well and once more didn’t get home till about 9:30 pm as I was MCing a competition finals. So work has been pretty full on and running has had to take a backseat.

The next 20 or so km of the run were quite nice but I have to admit that I struggled somewhat with the last 5-6 km. My pace slowed somewhat and I stopped for a few water breaks along the way. It was one of those runs where you start to question why you want to run a marathon but I think this is normal. I seem to recall thinking this before my last marathon as well. Nevertheless, I was very glad to see this sign which I normally see at the end of every long run:

Overall, just over 32km in just over 3:23:00. I could have done it faster if Ihad focused a bit more but it’s supposed to be a long slow run so I took it slow!

One of the things that I’ve quite enjoyed is that I’ve sort of built up a cameraderie with a whole bunch of fellow runners. Every Sunday morning I tend to bump into the same folks at different spots and we’ve all started to recognise each other. That little nod you give to your fellow runners as you go by has that little bit more meaning and tends to be followed by a cheery smile.

That’s my last 20 miler of this training cycle and I’m now officially into the taper. I thought it would never get here. 20 days to go to the marathon!

The first problem was that I was not particularly well rested. Daylight saving kicked in this weekend so when my alarm went off at the new 5AM it was actually the old 4AM. And to compound this my daughter had a rather restless night and called for me many a time so it was a rather bleary eyed dad that went for his run.

The second issue is that I had a few internal rumblings and had to visit quite a few of the bathrooms along my route. I suspect it is caused by the energy type drink I used this week. I’ve found that these drinks don’t work well for me and for my next long run I’ll stick to a gel or two as they don’t seem to cause me any grief.

Other than that the run was great. My wife did the first 12.5 km with me and that is always nice.

We saw this family at Mission Bay enjoying an early morning out:

I followed a route that took in most of the second half of the marathon course. During the actual marathon we’ll be running across the harbour bridge:

It is always nice running through the Viaduct area as you get to see all the expensive toys of the rich and famous. I was hoping to grab a picture of a super yacht as there are normally one or two but there were none in the harbour:

I saw these suspicious looking characters as well:

Speaking of suspicious looking characters, I saw a guy get arrested by the police which was a bit of fun. I think he’d been trying to break into a house as the police were wrestling him to the ground and putting handcuffs on. That was a bit unusual to say the least!

I felt pretty good after the run. I thought I would be wiped out but it wasn’t too bad.

I did 32 km in 3:19:12 which was just what my training plan called for. A nice gentle 32km run.

This coming week is now a rest week so the mileage is dramatically reduced. Next week I’ll have another 20 miler and then we’re into the taper! Not long now.

I’ve just completed week 12 of my marathon training program. This is a rest week in that the mileage is stepped back to give your body a bit of time to adapt to the extra stresses of the longer runs. As such I’ve only done 60 km this week and I think I’ve been glad of the rest.

I ran a half marathon distance for my long run today. I find it very amusing that my rest run is a half marathon nowadays. I really love the longer distance running just because of things like this sometimes!

I had a beautiful run this morning. Auckland turned on the fine weather and you can really tell that it is spring here. This row of Cherry trees is in the Auckland Domain and I had to snap a quick picture as I ran past:

My comfortable pace is definitely improving as I’m now running at an average of 10 kph and still managing to keep my heart rate low. For quite a long time I’ve had to run a bit slower than that if I wanted to keep my heart rate under my target of 145 (180 – age for men; 185 – age for women).

Today I did 21.31km in 2:07:26 and I felt good. I could quite easily have lifted my pace (I think) but just wanted an easy run. It’s funny how some days it is easy and other days it is all you can do to put one foot in front of the other.

Here’s today’s map:

Overall a very enjoyable run. It was especially nice to see so many people out running with their Auckland marathon shirts on. There’s always that nod or friendly smile when you see a fellow runner out training.

This coming week is the big one. My first 20 miler of this training cycle. You can tell the marathon is getting close! I’ve got a 20 miler this week, then a 12 miler, then another 20 miler and then the taper down to the race proper starts. 6 weeks to go!

My parents came to Auckland for the weekend to visit their favourite (and only) grandchild and it has become a bit of a tradition that my dad and I find a race to run when he visits. My mum and wife have also become keen on running over the last year or so, so we thought we’d find an event where everyone could do something.

The Sri Chinmoy folks have a quarterly event in the Auckland Domain and my wife, dad and myself entered the 10K and my mum entered the 5K.

Unfortunately it turned out that our babysitter (aka the other grandma) had to go to a religious service so I ended up supervising my monkey instead of running. It was fun having her cheer for her mother as she ran past us but she didn’t quite get the hang of it as her cheer was “Mummy! No run away – come back!”

It was a smallish event but one of the things I liked was the little signs with sayings of Sri Chinmoy. I liked this one for some reason:

My wife did the 10K race and set a new and inaugral PR of 57:29 and in so doing she also smashed her 5K PR – unfortunately she can’t quite remember the exact seconds but she saw the clock was saying 28 minutes something when she went by at the 5K mark and her previous 5K mark was 29 something.

Here she is on her final lap:

My mum and dad had good races as well and once they were all done I handed off my daughter and ran home (the long way).

I normally do my long runs on Sunday but because of the racing and other events on yesterday I only did my long run this morning. I took the day off from work as my parents were still here. I snuck out of the house at about 6:00 am and did a loop around the city.

The first half was along the coast and was pretty spectacular. The weather was perfect and it was just great. The second half was through the city and suburbia and while it was pretty good I hit rush hour and kept having to wait at traffic lights which was a trifle annoying.

I think I forgot to restart my watch after one of the lights as when I mapped out my route it said that I should be doing about 30.4 km but my GPS watch said I only did 29km which is a bit of a discrepancy. Anyway, 30km in 3:08:09.

That’s week 11 of my marathon training program done now. I did 73.8 km over the last 7 days which is not to be sneezed at. I’ve done 278 kilometres over the last 30 days. Marathon training sure does help the mileage climb!

After I got home from my run I took the family out to Wenderholm national park for a picnic lunch and a bit of a hike.

Unfortunately my monkey refused to walk so I ended up carrying her on the hike. The route we took went up a rather steep hill:

We started off from the car park next to the river so you can see we climbed a fair distance! I think I earned the ice cream I had on the way home!

Week 12 of my marathon training program is a step back week so mileage on all the runs is much reduced and I only have to run a half marathon distance this coming Sunday.

By the time I got to the CBD the fog had burnt off and could only be seen in the distance:

It was quite a cool experience (figuratively and literally!) and I really enjoyed it.

The run itself was fantastic. I just felt good the whole way and it’s probably the fastest run I’ve done since my last race.

Overall 11.04 km in 1:01:28 which I’m quite happy with. So far in September I’ve averaged 10K a day. Gotta love the marathon training.

Unfortunately a spider crawled across her ceiling and needless to say we’ve been woken up every hour or two to do a spider check. As such, my wife and I were both cursing when my alarm went off at 5am this morning. However, once we got out the door the conditions were so beautiful that the night time troubles were easily forgotten.

My training plan called for 17 miles (27.3 km) and hers called for 18 km (11 miles).

We started off by running inland towards One Tree Hill. It was rather bracing as there was still frost on the ground. There were many sheep with lambs about and it was a rather nice scene. I took this photo earlier in the week. The photos I took this morning didn’t come out that well as there wasn’t enough light.

We then headed down to the coast where my wife planned on peeling off and heading home while I continued on. However, she was feeling really good so decided to stick with me for a bit and do an extra two kilometers. This is her running ahead of me this morning:

Today was her record distance as she did 20 km in just over 2:10 minutes. I’m very proud of her and it’s been great being able to run with her.

I pushed on and continued running down to just past Kohimarama. I bumped into Aaron who was out doing his run and looking rather fighting fit. You can tell marathon season is approaching in Auckland as there were a great many runners out and about. It’s quite nice seeing everyone out running to be honest. I always sense a great air of cameraderie although it may all be in my imagination!

Here is today’s map:

I ended up doing 28 km in 2:59:52 which is rather slow but it was very enjoyable and at the end of the day that is what it is all about. My average heart rate was 135 which goes to show that I could have pushed the pace a bit more.

I’ve been having a real good streak with my running lately. I’ve just been enjoying the runs and its been no trouble getting out the door. The weather in Auckland has been cooperating as well as the conditions have been absolutely stunning.

That’s the end of week 10 of training. I did 70.2 km this week whichi is close to 44 miles. I think I’ll be doing even more next week!

I did 223km in August which is not bad at all and it looks like September will be the month I do my record mileage.

I completed my rest week last week and this week the mileage steps up a bit. I think I’m supposed to do about 44 miles this week. My long run this week will be 17 miles which is a rather long way just quietly.

I hit a small milestone on Sunday when I cracked 2500 km since I first started running last year. The last month or so I’ve felt really good about my running. I haven’t been running fast at all but I have been enjoying most of my runs. Getting out of the door has been easy even if the runs themselves haven’t always been that great. I’m really looking forward to doing the marathon which is pleasing as I was a bit worried that I’d lose my motivation after finishing my first one.

I’m halfway through my training program now so 9 more weeks to go.

I went shoe shopping last Saturday with my wife. We went to Shoe Science in Newmarket. I normally buy my shoes from Runningwarehouse.com as they are a lot cheaper than buying locally in New Zealand. However, it is hard to get properly fitted etc. via an online store so I decided to go to a speciality running store that does all the testing etc.

The testing process was quite cool. The store has a short running track which they get you to run up and down on while they film your gait. They then replay it and determine what kind of shoe you need. My wife is an overpronator and I’m more of a neutral runner. My last pair of shoes were designed for overpronators so they were definitely wrong for me.

The salesperson pulled out a few different brands of shoes and insisted we try running around with them all to find out which felt best. He also filmed us in each pair to check if they were suitable. It was quite cool as you could immediately see which shoes helped your gait and which didn’t.

I ended up with a pair of Brookes Defyance 2 shoes which I really like:

One tip the guy gave us was to always get your running shoes 1 size bigger than your normal shoes as your feet swell when running.

I’ve done just over 40 km in these shoes since Saturday and I must admit I really like them. They definitely suit me better than my previous pair of Adidas shoes. My wife got some nice Mizuno’s – I forget which exactly.

It is funny that the most expensive items of clothing that I have are my shoes. Well, except for my suit.

I took this panoramic shot with my camera while my wife stopped for a pitstop.

As you can see we were running in a rather scenic area.

I dropped my wife off at the 15km mark and carried on to do another loop around the local area. For some reason I found the last 5km or so rather tough and had to walk quite a bit. My legs just felt dead and afterwards my joints were rather sore. I suspect it had to do with my new shoes (separate post to follow) and I also stuck quite a few more hills in my route.

That’s week 08 of my marathon training complete. 10 more weeks to the marathon itself! Next week is a step back week so my long run will only be 18 km.

60.2 km for the week. Which is not too bad.

Steve Runner said something that really resonated. He said that to many people, people who can run even a mile are like superheroes. I remember when I was about 100 pounds heavier (not so long ago) and being unable to even dream of running a mile. I’d see folks running and think wow. And so whenever you have a run where things don’t go so well remember that you are a superhero to some folks. And yes, I do sometimes wear running tights.

Today’s run was a relatively slow 12 kms. Having said that I was quite proud of it as I ran to the top of One Tree Hill which is a short but relatively steep climb. I definitely felt like a superhero when I got to the top!

I got some funny looks on my way up:

Cornwall Park (where I was running) is a working farm and there were hundreds of sheep with lambs dotted around the place. The view from the top was pretty good but I didn’t hang around for very long. The photos I took weren’t very special so I’m not going to bother putting any up.

I did 7 km yesterday and 12 km today so this week has started off quite well in terms of running. I hope the rest of the week goes as well!

I did a great long run (23.5km) yesterday:

Conditions were great for running. Overcast, slightly chilly with a hint of rain but no wind.

I ran the first 13 km of that run with my wife and then did the next 10.5 by myself. I had a bit of a sprint from here to the Hilton just to wake up the legs which was great but I felt it on the hills back to home.

Only 45 km for the week when I was supposed to do about 57 but such is life. I’m supposed to do 60 this week and I’m looking forward to it.

It is time to invest in some more shoes I think. Both my current pairs are at about the 500km mark. I’ve already hit over 1000km for the year and think I’ll get to my goal of 2000 although it will be close!
