I am always looking forward to Xmas, as there’ll be a departmental Christmas Dinner organised by the colleagues working in the same department as mine. We tend to make this very formal and yet fun. Everyone will have to wear their evening wears (that is black tie for men and dresses for the ladies). We also have this tradition of having the Secret Santa activity during the dinner, whereby everyone of us will have to get a gift (with upper and lower limit on the price).

During the Christmas dinner itself, we will gather all the Secret Santa gifts from everyone and put numbers to it. We then select a number from a pot blindly and the number we get will determine which gift we will receive!

There are other ways to play the Secret Santa activity too! One possibility is to pre-assign a work colleague to everyone secretly, and you will have to select and buy a gift to this person without telling him/her who bought it. This is a better idea as we can buy a gift that suits the person’s personality, though it will make it less fun. I still prefer the random Secret Santa gifts option.

It’s now collecting dust and spams. I get email notifications every time a spam comment past through the protection by Akismet and it’s really getting on my nerves. Yes, Akismet is good but not good enough for me.

So, I went to look for other alternative and finally decided to go back to my previous spam blocker, Spam Karma 2 (aka SK2, but of course not the one you girls use for makeups). I was convinced by the article written by D’Arcy about “Downgrading Akismet“. Quite a funny article as well. SPAM DIE DIE DIE! Don’t disappoint me, SK2.

Some good features of SK2:
- Ability to configure stricter protection on old posts with no activity (popular spam target)
- Additional CAPTCHA check if the comment’s karma is within a certain error margin, providing the commenter with a chance to prove himself innocent.

So wordpress users, are you still using Akismet or have you guys switched away long time ago? Or if you have a better spam protection for your blog, do let me know. :)

A long feat: (Above) Students from the Multimedia University in Cyberjaya cheering upon hearing the announcement that they had broken the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s longest barg kebab by creating one that was 2.016km long. The last world record was set in Denmark for a barg kebab that was 1.5km long. More than 250 students (below) made the kebab which required 3.5 tonnes of chicken meat costing RM24,000.

Different people have different preference. I personally would like to just type my domain name without the www. For SEO purposes, it’s better to choose 1 and stick with it – otherwise you might end up with different Page Ranks for each URL (with and without). So what can you do to fix this?

Step 1: Adjust settings using Google Webmaster Tools
Google Webmaster Tools is useful to adjust the way Googlebot crawl and index your site, so sign up with them if you haven’t. After logging in to Google Webmaster Tools, look under the “Preferred Domain” menu (on the left sidebar), choose the appropriate settings for your site.

Step 2: Set up a 301 Redirection
After you decided whether to include www or not, you have to make sure all visitors will end up at the same url. There are few ways of which this can be done using 301 redirection.

First step is if your site is hosted on a Linux server with Apache Mod-Rewrite module enabled.

a) redirect all http://www.yoursite.com to http://yoursite.com
Go to your root directory and add the following code to your .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.yoursite\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^.*$ http://yoursite.com%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

b) redirect all http://yoursite.com to http://www.yoursite.com
Go to your root directory and add the following code to your .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^(.*)\.yoursite\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Note: Make sure you chance yoursite.com in the code to your own site URL!

Alternative Step: Use A WordPress Plugin (For WordPress Users)
If you are not hosted on Linux server, or if you’re not using Apache, or if you are confused with editing the .htaccess file, use this plugin called WWW Redirect. You can set whether to have the www or not from your WordPress Admin panel once you set this plugin up successfully.

You guys got to watch this video. It’s a stop-motion movie of two friends who turned into enemies and fighting each other. Sounds pretty dull, but you’ll know what I mean after watching it!

I think they really have too much spare time! Can you imagine how long it will take to make that movie out of pictures? I would say, probably the guys who made this movies are 80 years old now… Haha! Enjoy the video!

I’m not talking about the silliness of the train driver for driving the train off the track; I’m referring to the people who are standing below the dangling train.

Maybe you’ll think it isn’t at all silly, but if you read the full article, there’s an electricity substation just below the dangling train and a witness said that it was quite fortunate that the train did not crash down and struck the substation, because it would explode.

Explode? Possible? Just look at the picture again…. those people were standing so close to the station and watching. What is so nice to see that they are willing to risk their lives like that? Just imagine if the train suddenly moved and crash straight down to the electric substation.

A WOMAN has suffered severe burning to her anus after being struck by lightning which hit her in the mouth and passed right through her body. Natasha Timarovic, 27, was cleaning her teeth at in her home in the Croatian city of Zadar when lightning struck the building. She said: “I had just put my mouth under the tap to rinse away the toothpaste when the lightning must have struck the building.

This may sound crazy but it actually happened in Croatia! It’s amazing how lightning could strike a building and travel through the waterpipes. I guess we better not take a shower or brush our teeth, just in case!

BOSTON (CNN) — When Rick Hoyt was 15, he communicated something to his father that changed both their lives. “Dad,” the mute quadriplegic wrote in his computer after his father pushed him in a wheelchair in a five-kilometer race, “I felt like I wasn’t handicapped.”

Rick, now 37, has had cerebral palsy since birth. But he has always been treated simply as one of the family, included by his now-divorced parents in almost everything brothers Rob and Russell did.

For those who don’t know what cerebral palsy is:

Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive disorder, but secondary orthopaedic deformities are common, such as hip dislocation and scoliosis of the spine. There is no known cure for CP: medical intervention is limited to the treatment and prevention of complications possible from CP’s consequences. Overall, cerebral palsy ranks among the most monetarily costly congenital conditions in the world to manage effectively.

Saw this on moneysavingexpert.com, and I immediately signed up! I think it’s very worth it, 6 months of free gym membership in the trendy Cannons or Holmes Place gyms (not the off-peak membership, full membership that you can go anytime) by just buying Prudential Health insurance policy. I requested for a quote online and it only cost me £15 a month. So effectively, I have to pay £90 for the insurance and 6 months of gym membership. It’s a good deal considering the fact that it might cost up to £400 for 6 months gym membership!

The steps for this loophole:
1) Ask for an online quote and choose the following options for the cheapest policy:
* The highest excess of £1000
* The most basic cover
* Exclude London hospitals (you can do this even if you live in London)
2) Then, wait for the insurance pack being posted to your address and activate your gym membership before 28/11/2006.

The catch:
- After six months, you have to pay £25 if you want to cancel the gym membership. So effectively, you pay £115 (£90 + £25). You can still continue the gym membership for a fixed £25 a month (or £50 a month if you choose Holmes Place Kensington, Mayfair, Broadgate or Canary Riverside).

How to cancel?
- After 6 months, you just need to cancel your insurance and your gym membership will automatically be cancelled.
