Russell Holly of Geek.com is reporting that sources tell him the launch of a Senseless HTC One, complete with stock Android, is “imminent.” Apparently, the chatter that has been getting louder surrounding the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S4 running stock Android was the final push needed to get HTC on board with the idea. HTC’s Senior Global Online Communications Manager, Jeff Gordon, reached out to Android and Me to say that, “HTC is not currently planning a ‘Nexus Edition’ of the HTC One,” shortly after the original rumor on the such a device was started on Twitter, but things can change.

According to Holly, the stock HTC One could be announced as soon as the next two weeks. The device could see a summer release, right around the time production of the One is scheduled to double, and an update to Android 4.2.2 is delivered to the original handset.

As for how this device would be sold and updated, that’s still a mystery. One of the big selling points of the Nexus Experience Galaxy S4 is that it will be sold unlocked through Google Play, and updated directly by Google. We’ll be keep our ears to ground for more information.

Raining.fm is a website that exists for one purpose: to serve you with the sound of rain. It’s incredibly simple, and works incredibly well. The website is clad in neon-pastel colors, and easy to understand buttons. You can adjust the amount of thunder and lightning sounds, use a built-in break or sleep timer to automatically regulate the rain and use the image button to enable background scrolling, or pause on an image you like.

Released just this week on Android (and iOS), the Raining.fm app is a perfect translation of the website into app form. The same colors, backgrounds, options, features and icons are used, keeping things simple and consistent across platforms. While it may have a bit of an iOS look to it, with buttons across the bottom, the way it functions (with vertically-sliding panels) works well, and fits in nicely on Android.

Raining.fm for Android is $1.99, but it’s well worth it. My favorite part about the app is that it plays in the background, and with other audio tracks. Paired with Google Play’s new All Access Music, Raining.fm is a relaxation machine. Just last night, I was lulled to sleep by the sound Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata over a gentle storm (more rain, less thunder and lightning). I can’t think of a better way to end a hot, muggy spring day.

Shipping 5 million HTC Ones may sound impressive, but we expect Samsung is unimpressed. The Korean manufacturer has announced that they have already shipped 10 million Galaxy S4s, breaking the 50 day record it took Samsung to ship the same number of Galaxy SIIIs. To celebrate this grand achievement  Samsung will be launching the S4 in four new colors later this summer (Blue Arctic, Red Aurora, Purple Mirage and Brown Autumn).

It’s obvious that HTC and Samsung are in different leagues, but we are left wondering where sales of the HTC One would be right now if HTC hadn’t run into component issues which forced a staggered global release cycle. We expect sales of the HTC One to pick up as we move into the summer, but it would be nearly impossible for HTC to gain the momentum that Samsung currently has.

Recent departures from the Taiwanese manufacturer include HTC’s Chief Product Officer, Kouji Kodera, vice president of global communications, Jason Gordon, global retail marketing manager, Rebecca Rowland, director of digital marketing, John Starkweathe, and product strategy manager, Eric Lin.

A source speaking with The Verge has said that, “Anyone who’s heard of them in Seattle doesn’t want to go work for them right now. They’re like T-Mobile two years ago. … They’re in utter freefall.” After leaving HTC, Eric Lin echoed words from The Verge’s source, taking to Twitter to say, “To all my friends still at HTC- just quit. Leave now. It’s tough to do, but you’ll be so much happier, I swear.”

With HTC’s future on the line with the One, this couldn’t come at a worse time. By all accounts, the HTC One is an absolutely great device. It certainly trumps the Samsung Galaxy S4 in terms of sheer build quality, but Samsung’s momentum seems to be unstoppable right now. Anyone with an appreciation for competition and options in Android today is undoubtedly rooting for HTC to pull through this — regardless of whether or not you buy their products.

Following major updates to Talk (Hangouts), Google Play Music and Google Plus over the last week, a new batch of Android apps, including Chrome, Google Drive and Play Magazines, are getting the revamp treatment today. Major highlights include a card style UI for both Drive and Play Magazines, a full screen mode for Google Chrome, and bug fixes all around.

The breakdown of exactly what each update contains is as follows:

We’ve already discussed how Google used I/O to show off how their core services and apps are now separated from Android, allowing them to update your Android experience without updating the OS itself. Today’s round of updates further enforces this. Including these latest updates, Google has been able to update messaging, cloud storage, social networking, music and web browsing, all without updating Android itself.

Viva Movil will offer the same devices and plans as Verizon, but they will have premium retail stores that are better designed to serve the Latino customers. This includes employees that speak Spanish, kid-friendly areas in all of their stores for parents who shop with their children, and a unique social shopping experience through its Facebook page. Viva Movil will also offer exclusive accessories designed by Jennifer Lopez.

The first Viva Movil store will open June 15th in New York City. Additional retail stores will be coming soon to Los Angeles, Miami, and other locations.

As of now, Apple, Samsung and Blackberry are the only companies which have approved pre-installed applications which can operate on AT&T’s Mobile Share or Tiered plans. But things are about to change. Starting in mid-June, those same applications will also be able to make video calls on unlimited LTE plans with all pre-loaded video chat apps gaining access to AT&T’s network by the end of this year.

It’s nice to see AT&T change its stance on video calling, but we’re sure you’d agree that they’re a little late to the game.

Probably the biggest changes in the new Google Plus app for Android are the photography features. At Google I/O, Google introduced several useful new utilities for Plus that made your photos look better, and made them easier to share. The new Android app focuses on three major areas of photography, and automates them all.

The first area is editing. Google Plus’ new auto enhance feature does just what it sounds like. By tweaking a few simple things, like contrast or adding some smoothing, your photos are automatically improved when uploaded to Google Plus. You don’t have to leave them auto-enhanced, but in my experience, Google Plus actually does a fantastic job. Also related to photo editing, the new Plus app includes built-in Snapseed editing, for those that want more control over the changes made to their photos.

The second photography related feature is auto highlight. After a long day of photo taking, Google Plus will go through the photographs that have been auto-uploaded to Plus, and find the best ones, making it easier to share highlights. Auto highlight is a neat feature, especially for those days when you’ve taken a ton of pictures, and don’t have anything in particular you want to share.

The last major photography feature is auto awesome. Auto awesome goes through your photos, and makes things like animations and panoramas, which Google apparently considers Awesome. Until we spend more time with auto awesome, we won’t know just how awesome it really is. It could certainly turn out to be a neat feature.

Outside of photography features, the new Google Plus app has made some changes to location sharing, and content discovery within the app. With the locations tab in the new Plus app, if users are sharing their location, you’ll see exactly where they are, in either a list view, or a handy map view. To bolster content discovery, Google has added auto-hashtags to posts from the Android app now. With posts being auto-tagged, more of Google Plus will be categorized, making it easier to find content relevant to your interests.

There have been some issues in rolling out the update to Google Plus, but rest assured, they are being worked on. Once you get your hands on the new update, let us know how you like it either in the comments, or on the Android and Me Google Plus page.

Fortunately, Google isn’t even close to being finished with Hangouts. We’ve already heard that SMS integration is a high-priority for the Hangouts team, and now we know that not only is desktop calling making a comeback, but tight Google Voice integration is on the horizon.

In a Google Plus post from this morning, Google’s manager of real-time communication products, Nikhyl Singhal, explained the status of desktop calling from Gmail, which was lost in the move to Hangouts, and the future of Google Voice. According to Singhal, inbound and outbound calls are being worked on. For now, users can still take advantage of inbound calling in Voice, and stick with the old Talk in Gmail. Other than that, users are stuck playing the waiting game.

Singhal also took a moment to address Google Voice a little more in-depth, saying that, “Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice, and making/receiving phone calls is just the beginning. Future versions of Hangouts will integrate Google Voice more seamlessly.”

Hangouts may not be the unified messaging service we were originally hoping for, but it’s being worked on. By the end of the year, I imagine Hangouts will finally combine Google Talk, Google Voice, Google Plus Hangouts, SMS and MMS messaging into one handy app. Until then, things may get little rough while everything is being ironed out.

A 10% bump in thickness and weight may not sound like much, but the difference is certainly noticeable. The HTC J One is 33% thicker than the Samsung Galaxy S4. How many of you would be willing to compromise the HTC One’s current size and weight in order to gain expandable storage?

What makes us think the NES4 is a T-Mobile Galaxy S 4? Good question. After poking around online, in my own personal research, I found that the T-Mobile Galaxy S4 is the only variant of the device capable of supporting all the necessary bands for T-Mobile and AT&T. Both AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s Galaxy S 4 variants are essentially the same phone, but AT&T has some locks in place that keep the S4 stuck on AT&T. I wasn’t positive how these locks worked, or if that even was the case, but research from AnandTech’s Brian Klug seems to confirm and explain why the SGH M919, or T-Mobile Galaxy S4, is most likely the same device as the NES4.

SGH-M919 has always included support for LTE on Bands 2, 4, 5, and 17 (that's 1900 PCS, 1700/2100 AWS, 850 Cellular, and 700 Lower B and C) and WCDMA on Bands 2, 4, and 5. At another level, this is the same hardware as the AT&T variant but without the arbitrary RAT (Radio Access Technology) locking that AT&T has put in place to restrict use of Band 4 WCDMA which T-Mobile needs for a good experience. This translates to that support for AT&T and T-Mobile LTE and WCDMA. That also means Snapdragon 600 (APQ8064AB) and no Exynos 5.Brian KlugAnandTech

The chances that the NES4 is an entirely new model of Galaxy S4 are slim to none. There’s no way Google is having Samsung manufacture a new model of GS4, just to keep the same exact hardware configuration. Hugo Barra, who was spotted walking around I/O with the device, said the software wasn’t finished yet. Another good sign Google simply took an existing device and is working away on it.

At this point, you may be wondering what this means for you. If the NES4 really is an SGH M919, then a simple software flash should turn your T-Mobile S4 into Nexus Experience device, complete with updates directly from Google and all. If the NES4 is an entirely different device, which again, we don’t think it is, then you’d be out of luck. There are still AOSP ROMs for the T-Mobile S4 as it is, so it won’t be that big of a change either way. Still, for someone like me who doesn’t mess with custom ROMs much anymore, an Odin flash to a Nexus Experience device where Google will take care of the updates sounds very nice. Especially on a device that can be bought with T-Mobile installation plans, not $650 upfront.

We’ll be following news around the Nexus Experience S4 closely, so stay tuned for more.

HTC has confirmed that global variants of the HTC One X, One X+ and One S will also be receiving the Sense 5 update, but timing details have yet to be released.

Most of us expected Google to announce Android 4.3 at yesterday’s big keynote, but it sounds like the next version of Android was intentionally bumped from the show. Sources at Google say they wanted to demonstrate their ability to roll out new services and APIs without upgrading the Android firmware, and it appears they made their point.

Not much is known about Android 4.3, but we expect it to be a rather minor update. The developer API level should be bumped up to version 18, with support for Bluetooth Smart (and possibly OpenGL ES 3.0), and that’s about all we know. We are unable to confirm this, but we assume that Android 4.3 will be pushed out to all current Nexus devices (4, 7, 10) when it goes live next month.

The Nexus 4 might not be the most exciting device on the block anymore, but it’s still a damn good value with a starting price of $299.

While Hangouts did solve some of the problems surrounding Google’s various messaging services, it wasn’t quite as unified as we originally believed it would be. Google Voice integration is nowhere to be found, and SMS still resides in its own app. Apparently, SMS integration with Hangouts is coming soon, and we imagine Google Voice will follow shortly.

In a post on Google Plus, Googler Dori Storbeck has said that, “SMS integration is coming soon — It’s one of our most requested features!” So there you have it. Hangouts will be the one and only app needed for messaging sooner than later.

Previously, Copy cloud storage accounts offered free users 5GB of storage, along with a referral program that trumps anything competitors offer. In a press email sent out to bloggers shortly after Google I/O’s keynote ended, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group announced that in an upcoming update to Android, support for native Bluetooth Smart functionality would be available for developers to take advantage of. Normally, we might guess that it the update could be to 4.2.3, or some other small, incremental number, but Twitter and Google+ have been buzzing with info that more big Android news is on the horizon.

Other than support for Bluetooth Smart, which is already supported by Apple, Microsoft and BlackBerry, no one knows what will be included in the next version of Android, expected to launch as Android 4.3. We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground for any news on the next big version that might slip out before I/O comes to and end.

Announced today on the Google Commerce blog, Google Wallet will now be integrated with Gmail. By linking the two services, Google users will be able to send money as an email attachment. It’s as simple as hovering over the attachment paperclip icon, clicking the money icon, entering the amount of money you want to pay out and pressing send. You can also send money to non-Gmail users.

Right now, Google Wallet integration is only available on Gmail for desktop, but that will be changing in the future. Will Gmail integration push you into using Google Wallet more? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Google’s answer to fragmentation has been fully realized at Google I/O 2013. Google has developed around the vastly different configurations of Android, breaking down the various walls keeping Google from updating core apps and services that really shape your Android experience. If you were to break down the most important aspects of Android that dictate user experience, you could easily include everything Google updated today, without having to actually update Android. That means that not only will Nexus users experience Android the way Google wants you to, but HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z and Oppo Find 5 users will as well.

Yes, the way text messages, certain aspects of notifications, the lock screen and home screen may be entirely different on various devices, but that’s not fragmentation — that’s choice. When every Android user, despite what phone or tablet they use, can enjoy the same Google Play store, the same Maps app, the same music services, the same Gmail experience and the same robust Google Search features, there’s no way you can say Android has a fragmentation problem. In the past there has been system compatibility problems, keeping some users on older versions of Android from accessing certain features, but that is getting better every day. And Google has set up a system that will get rid of that problem in the future.

In order to implement the changes to Android that Google wanted to today, they didn’t have to update Android. That, in itself, is the most important piece of news to come out of Google I/O 2013. To see how far Android has come in the last year, you don’t need to look further than that.
