HTC have fewer devices, four in all, it seems if this leak is to be believed and we have no doubt to think any other way. It leave HTC to concentrate on these devices to make them the best ever.
HTC have said previously that it had a commitment to focus its attention on fewer devices in 2012.

If you are wondering what POGO pins are and what the heck they do in a dock, you are not alone. The Galaxy Nexus has three little metal pins on the right hand side of the device, and these pins are used to charge the phone. Get a dock with POGO pins and you only have to set the phone down into the dock and it will start charging. Pretty nifty eh? No more fumbling around for a plug and it will save wear and tear on the usb charging port.

There is a vocal group of Nexus owners who are wanting to use POGO for a desktop charger and a car dock. The current car dock is especially hideous, and many are upset with it. There was a letter writing campaign to Samsung asking for a POGO dock, and the canned response was that Samsung has no plans to make one:

After speaking with three separate representatives, this is what I’ve learned:

1. Samsung Accessory Support cannot confirm or deny whether or not the docks for the GSM Galaxy Nexus will work with the VZW Galaxy Nexus.

2. They have not heard many direct requests for these types of docks from VZW Galaxy Nexus owners.

3. Samsung often will not produce certain accessories for a phone unless it believes that there is a demand to be met.

Apparently, we need to be more vocal if we actually want these. Would any of you be willing to contact Samsung and request these accessories, either for yourself or your fellow Nexus owners?

Send them an email: https://contactus.samsung.com/custom….jsp?SITE_ID=1

-or-

Call their Accessory department: (800) 757-0280

On that same page is a poll, asking how much one would pay for such a dock. At the time of the writing of this post, 28% of the respondents said they would pay $100 for the dock, while 65% said that $50 or less is what they would pay.

Well Samsung now has a desktop charger dock that supports the POGO standard. It works with the Verizon and Sprint Galaxy Nexus and the price is:

$90

That is a lot of cash to fork over for some plastic and wires. Will is sell? More importantly, will the price drop? Time will tell if the $90 price point is something that will stick, but the demand for the dock is high enough that it is on backorder.

If this dock is selling this well at this price point, there has to be a car dock in the works. Question is: how mush will it be?

If you just have to have this now click here and have at it.

It used to be pretty simple to be a Verizon customer. You buy a phone, and you knew that while you might be paying a more than the average customer, you knew that not only was your network everywhere, it worked all the time. There was a time when Verizon customers would make fun of AT&T or Sprint customers when their phones lost data, or text didn’t work. You really do get what you pay for, especially at a sporting event or other large gathering of people in a small area. Verizon always seemed to work better than the competition.

As more people are buying LTE devices on Big Red, there are more and more people grumbling about Verizon’s phones not working as intended. Dropped data is a big one, or getting stuck on 1X. It isn’t any fun when you expect 4G and get 1X. So what’s going on? Let’s take a look at what’s going on with Verizon today.

There aren’t any engineering degrees hanging on my walls, I am a chef by trade. However, explaining what’s going on with Verizon right now isn’t rocket science. It is just a matter of math.

Currently, Verizon is supporting quite a few different kinds of networks. Most of the USA is covered in 3G, and that’s what most people are thinking of when they buy or use a phone. 3G works great, it transfers data to your phone relatively fast, and the phone and tower talk to each other with a minimal delay. That’s to say that the ‘ping’ or ‘lag’ is low. What that means is stuff starts happening almost right away when you press a button in your phone’s browser.

In areas that are far away from towns, or fringe coverage areas, your phone might pick up 1X. That’s an old network. It is 1G so to speak, compared to 3G and 4G. (2G wasn’t really adapted.) It works fine for calling and texting, but you might notice that data doesn’t work all that great on 1X. Not only does the data crawl along at a snail’s pace, slower than dial-up speeds, it also has a very high amount of lag. It might take 2 seconds for data to travel back and forth from the tower, so browsing websites and apps might act like they are not connected at all when you start using them.

The technology used above is CDMA. You don’t need to know what that means, except that CDMA phones don’t need SIM cards. But wait, 4G LTE uses a SIM card so what’s up with that? LTE technology is based on GSM, like your friends on AT&T there is a SIM card involved, and all Verizon 4G phones have a SIM card tucked under the battery cover.

Here’s where the issue comes in. CDMA doesn’t talk to GSM. It just doesn’t work. So Verizon had to make another network to manage the handoff between 4G and 3G. That network is eHRPD. If you have a Verizon LTE phone that’s on 3G, it’s hanging out on the eHRPD network. You can check this yourself by going into your phone settings–> About phone–> Status and it’s listed under Network.

This go between network is what’s causing most the issues with Verizon’s network lately. It is also why when the LTE network goes down, 3G tends to go down for 4G phones, despite what Verizon’s PR teams might say. It is also why the transition from 4G to 3G can be painfully long, as the phone tries to handshake back and forth from 3G to 4G.

Well if eHRPD is the problem, can I just disable it? Well there is a way to do it on most phones, but it doesn’t always stick if you reboot the phone, not to mention it involves digging into test menus that Verizon really doesn’t intend the general public to get into.

So where does that leave us now? Well Verizon is in a transition phase right now. The idea is to get the whole country in LTE coverage by the end of 2013, that means phasing out 3G and also 1X. Once Verizon has us all on LTE phones, then you will see phones that don’t have 3 different radios in them-and hopefully battery life will be much improved by then. Verizon is going to have your voice data over LTE soon, the concept is just now breaking. This isn’t ideal for us now, and believe me, if you buy a LTE device now or in the next year, you are an early adaptor of this new technology. Things are going to be so much better when these legacy networks go away.

MWC is really shaping up to bring all sorts of incredible advancements to the mobile world, and of course the Android platform seems to be bringing all the big ones; quad-core, true HD screens, software keys and now Full-HD Voice. Now some European carriers have been experimenting with an HD voice technology by Nokia for a little while now, but this new technology by the folks at Fraunhofer ups the ante even further. Standard cellphone voice quality has always been terrible quality with frequencies capped at a meager 3.5kHz, making voices sound muffled, tinny and often just plain difficult to understand depending on the user and who’s on the other end. HD voice technology, which was introduced some time ago and is even undergoing trial periods in a few markets, brought that cap up to 7kHz. Full-HD Voice brings that cap way up to 20kHz, resulting in significantly greater quality and clarity.

With LTE taking hold in the US market and around the world, the time to unveil such bandwidth intensive technology is definitely at hand. Fraunhofer will be at MWC 2012 showing off its new technology, and has put together a website for those of us who can’t make it out to Barcelona next week. Hit up the link and give it a shot, you are guaranteed to be impressed.

Samsung is rumoured to be working to release a new Android smartphone that is almost bezel-free by the third quarter of this year, according to executives quoted by Korean news outlet MK News
The device is codenamed ‘Galaxy B’ and sports a large AMOLED display, with no bezel on the side or bottom of the device and is reported to feature a small section at the top only to squeeze in an earpiece and a front-facing camera.
It isn’t known whether the smartphone is Android-powered but given the company’s Google-centric strategy as of late, we expect this to be the case.
This is of course, pure unadulterated and utterly unconfirmed rumor. Let’s hope it makes the Samsung Stand at MWC. next week.

Today in Germany Motorola Forced Apple to Disable iCloud push. The injunction is only in and for Germany.
On Apples German Support Forum iCloud push email and MobileMe will not work within the borders of Germany.
This move is three weeks after the Mannheim court granted a permanent injunction against Apple’s iCloud push email notifications. Apple users will now have to set their email client to a 2, 5.10 minute etc interval to pull any email messages, which, on the face of it is not the end of the world. But it is an inconvenience nonetheless.

Florian Mueller wrote

“But the patent that now affects Apple’s push email service in Germany does not appear to be essential to any industry standard, If the very same patent was standard-essential, Apple couldn’t just switch off a certain feature: it would have to stop selling its products altogether.”

Eric Schmidt told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sea, back in December it was to launch a tablet this year, while also confirming that Google plans to leverage its voice recognition technology to better challenge Apple’s Siri.
Now Google’s own brand could go into production in April, and the thinking is a 7” size would be the most promising choice to manufacture. Screen size, it would make more sense to bring out a 1280×800 touchscreen running ICS, than the Nook and Fire supporting 1024×600.

We don’t think a budget device would be the way to go as consumers need tablets not just to use as a ebook but to use on the web as well.

Also unclear is who will manufacture the tablet. You would think having Motorola under it’s umbrella they would be first choice but, I’m not so sure. HTC made Nexus One followed by the Samsung made Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus.
I’m sure Google would go with a untempered Ice Cream Sandwich, we will see in the coming weeks.

If you think a dual-sim phone would be better than carrying two devices around then the answer could be on it’s way. This year ViewSonic decided that merely slapping Ice Cream Sandwich on its new ViewPhones wasn’t good enough, so they have just-announced three models, the 4s, 4e and 5e that all come with an extra SIM slot.

If 3.5-inch displays aren’t your cup of tea then you’ll have to jump straight to the 5-inch ViewPhone 5e, but we believe it’s 800 × 480 screen resolution. Could there be more in this dual-SIM beast?

ViewSonic Europe product manager Luigi Castellano, said:

“ViewSonic ViewPhone the Dual-SIM smartphone series is the business market, often traveling abroad, work abroad, study the use of those who desire and transnational family and friends to maintain contact interaction of the perfect mobile solution program the Dual-SIM smartphone so that not only has two sets of door number or travel frequently, users can more easily integrate two SIM card in a mobile phone to enjoy the most affordable mobile communication services with different numbers each user while allowing a machine to intelligently manage the areas of work contacts and family and social circles of private life

Intel has joined the board of The Document Foundation (TDF) – a decision that will have many of the Redmond old-guard fuming.
Intel has begun distributing the open source LibreOffice suite via its online AppUp Store. Dawn Foster open source community lead at Intel said

“I have been using LibreOffice from day one for presentations at conferences and for data analysis,”

in a statement.

“Our engineers have worked with the LibreOffice codebase to optimize it for Intel hardware. Adding it to the AppUp Center is an obvious extension, and will provide an exciting feature for all Ultrabook users.”

While LibreOffice already has a cozy relationship with the main open source vendors such as SUSE and Red Hat, it has lacked a major commercial member. The bagging of Intel, formerly one of Microsoft’s closest allies in the technology world, is a major coup, and TDF board member Florian Effenberger said he was “thrilled” with the news.

Dr. Gerald Pfeifer, senior director of product management at SUSE said,

“We welcome Intel to The Document Foundation, and look forward to working with them, It’s great to see Intel providing LibreOffice through an exciting new channel so that more and more users can experience LibreOffice on Windows.”

LibreOffice completed the third major overall to its code base since TDF left it’s OpenOffice origins after Oracle started rubbing people up the wrong way. It’s currently planning Android, iOS, and cloud builds, and is the most dynamic open source rival to Microsoft’s money making Office applications suite. The fact that Intel will be contributing financially to its development and also distributing it, but it must be annoying the hell out of people at Redmond.

HTC has just opened it’s new Official blog site – one we’re hoping will become a great resource for fans of its smartphones – in the form of a new blog.
As HTC themselves say “we have a mountain of information to share and want to give you a place to go for the rest of the story”. It should give the manufacturer a new tool to keep us updated on its latest work.
We can hopefully look forward to HTC using the blog to discuss and bring us news about software updates, design process, and some sort of indication on development on sense UI etc.

It will give users a chance to ask questions about what might be coming next from HTC and get an officially-sanctioned response.
Right now, the sky’s the limit for what HTC might do with the site.
I registered today so I’ll be keeping an eye on it, and let you know how it’s going.

Rumors, rumors and more rumors.how do you check to see if they’re true or false?
Well, three words Fact Checkers Unit (FCU). Who are they I hear you asking? In collaboration with both Samsung and MTV they check facts from fiction.
The Fact Checkers Unit finds new ways to use the GALAXY Note in every episode, often with unorthodox, some might even say outrageous and side-splitting results. Another plus? The wild celebrity cameos – some of the music industry’s biggest names, including T-Pain, Moby and that guy from Sugar Ray – certainly help the show’s popularity too. Why not watch a few episodes and see what you think? Bonus points for catching all the awesome ways you can use GALAXY Note!
I have two episodes below for you to view, side-splitting? Well head over the Samsung Tomorrow on the link below to see three more episodes.

Episode 1: Moby’s Grammy

Click here to view the embedded video.

In this first episode, the Fact Checkers Unit (comprised of Russell, the one with mustache, and his partner Dylan) is threatening to crash the company party. The boss, Jordache, creates the first of many diversions – she sends them to Arizona to verify the wild rumor that electronic-music-superstar Moby’s bones are unbreakable. Using their GALAXY Notes, the Unit is able to gather their factual evidence, but not before incurring the wrath of Moby.

Episode 2: Three-Pain

Click here to view the embedded video.

Here, Russell and Dylan wake up in their RV… which is already moving! Turns out they picked up (guest star) Sugar Ray, who plays DJ Booth heading to the “Flaming Man” music festival. While on the road, FCU receives their new mission (via GALAXY Note) that they’ve got to find out whether rapper T-Pain actually sleeps in a coffin. Their research leads them to a very private recording studio where the duo records a hilarious new song, “There’s a Party in my Mouth.

I had the chance to play with a Samsung Galaxy Note for a few days, and have to say that while I started off a little sceptical of the offspring of a smartphone and a tablet, I am pleased to say that I ended up giving it a big thumbs up. More information and the review video is after the break.

The Samsung Galaxy Note is surprisingly lightweight. At 6.28 ounces it’s very much lighter than my HTC Inspire 4G. It’s powered by a 1.5GHz dual core processor, and has a very sexy 5.3inch Super AMOLED screen. From the first time you seen the HD resolution, it’s hard to image viewing videos and pictures any other way.

The stylus pen is a nice touch and really serves to show the versatility of the device. Whether you want to write down a quick reminder note or write something more personal and email it, this feature can do it all. You can take a screenshot, make notes on it, crop images and much more.

I only used this device over WiFi so I didn’t get to test it out as an actual phone per se, but in any case, I couldn’t really see it being the type of phone that users hold next to their heads, this is something that you must use a bluetooth headset with. After that, the size really doesn’t become an issue as now it’s just a device with a nice big hi res screen – perfect !

Overall, as I mentioned, I am going to recommend this device. You can pick one up for $299.99 on a new 2 year contract or $699.99 without any strings. We’d love to hear your thoughts on the review.

Are you using Google Music? The more important question is have you purchased music through Google Music? While there was quite an uproar to get Google Music Beta invites, and there was a large movement to upload songs to Google Music; there is concern that Google Music isn’t living up to expectations. Cnet posted that Google is reporting that adaptation and revenue are well below expectations.

While it is fair to say that the service has not officially been released for even a quarter yet, there is still concern that the service isn’t making any money, and there are still issues that need to ironed out.

Google has not done a whole lot of advertising for any of its products. Seeing a Google commercial is a rare treat, and in the last three months I only remember seeing a Chrome commercial and a few Google Plus commercials. For Music to take off, there needs to be a significant marketing push behind it. Also, there needs to be a better presence on desktops. While the web interface is easy to use once you find it, most people are programmed to open iTunes or Rdio to access music services.

It isn’t fair to criticize Google right now when it seems like the Music Industry as a whole has no idea where it is headed. Is the future the old iTunes model where people buy music directly from one place, or is it Spotify, or Rdio, where one monthly fee allows access to virtually all music?

While Google Music still has paint drying inside the virtual storefront, there are concerns that need to be addressed. The idea of uploading personal libraries of music is an appealing one, and both Google Music and Amazon MP3 did the same thing at almost the same time. The difference is Amazon MP3 is more likely to put albums on sale for $5, and that’s a bargain that’s hard to pass up. So what’s in store for Google right now? Google has not responded to CNet’s request for comment, so things might not be as bad as we are lead to believe. The next 3 months are important though, there is no hiding that.

Virgin Media is mulling over a possible bid in the UK 4G spectrum auction scheduled for later this year after testing 4G coverage at its Oxford Street store.

Earlier today we reported the Orange and T-Mobile are to launch a 4G LTE network later this year. Could it be a new mobile phone network gearing up in time for the UK’s 4G revolution? Maybe so, as RegHardware has reported that VirginMedia is planning trials of 4G telephony in several UK cities. We reported earlier this year on Virgin Media’s speed up free to customers, doubling some customers speeds.

It’s not a definite though, with a spokesperson for the VirginMedia saying, “”Ofcom were quite explicit about encouraging new entrants into the market, which is an encouraging sign.
They are looking at making the sort of spectrum that we would look to use available, not just for the big mobile operators. So there is potential here for the market to open up.”

The cable giant is reportedly “dropping fibre-connected LTE (Long Term Evolution) Small Cells into urban areas, to see how easily decent coverage could be established” and is working with Airspan on base stations that are “ideal for dropping into lamp posts or bolting onto walls”.
It isn’t clear if Virgin Media wants to take on the likes of Vodafone, O2 and Three though – it already has a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) deal with Everything Everywhere – or whether it is simply testing the tech so it is aware how profitable buying up some of the spectrum before leasing capacity to the existing networks.

It may also be exploring a roaming deal for its MVNO customers and / or Orange and T-Mobile users through Everything Everywhere (EE). The company wouldn’t confirm if it was to bid for any of the 2.6GHz band in which the trials will operate.

Everything Everywhere recently announced plans to begin the roll-out of its 4G service before the end of the year. This followed the news that Ofcom had revised its plans for dealing with the 4G spectrum, announcing that it aims to bring coverage to at least 98 per cent of the population.

HTC’s One X smartphone has been pictured in press-shot form, days ahead of the Android quad-core’s official debut expected to take place at MWC 2012, and complete with dedicated Ice Cream Sandwich control buttons. Uncanny resemblance to Desire S The handset, previously known as the HTC Edge and Endeavor, is expected to run Android 4.0 and Sense 4.0 on NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad-core, according to the rumor machine, and thanks to Pocketnow‘s leaked image we can get a glimpse of the presumably final hardware wrapped around those specs.

Up front is believed to be a sizable 4.7-inch touchscreen, running at 720p HD resolution, while we’re expecting an 8-megapixel camera on the back with 1080p Full HD video recording. There’s clearly a front-facing camera too, while the ICS controls for back, home and task-switching that, on the Galaxy Nexus, are rendered in software, get dedicated touch-sensitive buttons on the One X.
It’s unclear what material HTC has opted to use for the One X. The black handset could be plastic, or it could follow in the footsteps of previous unibody HTC devices and be constructed out of metal. That could lead to a hefty handset, given the scale involved, but we’re unlikely to know for sure until we see it next week.

Samsung has announced that, since launching in April 2011, the various guises of its flagship Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone have been sold more than 20 million times worldwide.
The S II hit the 20 million target seven months faster than the original Galaxy S handset, making it the Korean company’s fastest selling smartphone ever.

The news will take some of the sting out of the shock that the Samsung Galaxy S III will not be unleashed at this year’s Mobile World Congress (the S II was announced at last year’s expo) with Sammy telling us that “the successor to the Galaxy S II smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product.”
However, a Samsung Galaxy S II Plus could be all set for MWC unveiling but this could just be a European variant of a couple of S II souped-up models that we’ve already seen.

Whatever Samsung unveils at MWC and whenever the S III does finally arrive, one thing is for sure – they’ve got some big boots to fill.

You may have been seeing a lot of talk about the Tegra 3 recently and wondered what it is, how does it work and just generally what makes it better than anything else out there? Well just to help you out, Nvidia has officially renamed it’s architecture for the Tegra 3, formally known as VSMP, to a much friendlier “4-PLUS-1″ architecture.

The basic premise behind the Tegra 3 is that it delivers world-class quad-core performance for our mobile devices, while offering a less powerful and less power-hungry single core to handle tasks that are less intensive. This is a new kind of thinking in the mobile world, as we not only get the first quad-core device, but it’s also a device that can save significantly on battery life by only using the power it needs rather than sucking down your battery by using all the cores at once. Nvidia has put together a nice little chart giving a visual representation of what the architecture looks like:

If you don’t know how the Tegra 3 works, Nvidia has a great little explanatory video if you’re up for watching something a little more techy.

Those looking for a less technical explanation and a more real world example can check out the following video on the Tegra 3 enhanced version of the popular Android third-person shooter, Shadowgun.
