Reddit is a popular social media platform where millions of users engage in discussions, share content, and connect with like-minded individuals. However, many users often find themselves wondering how to change their Reddit username. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process, explain Reddit’s policies, and provide alternatives to help you navigate this often confusing aspect of the platform.

Why can’t I directly change my Reddit username?

One of the most common questions among Reddit users is why they can’t simply change their username on the platform. The answer lies in Reddit’s strict policy regarding username changes. Unlike many other social media platforms, Reddit does not allow users to directly change their usernames once an account has been created. This policy has been in place since the platform’s inception and continues to be a source of frustration for many users who want to change their Reddit username.

Reddit’s policy on username changes

Reddit’s stance on username changes is clear: once you’ve created your Reddit account and finalized your username, it cannot be changed. This policy applies to all users, regardless of how long they’ve been on the platform or how much karma they’ve accumulated. The assigned username becomes a permanent identifier for your account, and Reddit does not provide any built-in mechanism to alter it.

Reasons behind the no-change rule

There are several reasons why Reddit maintains this strict policy on username changes. First and foremost, usernames serve as unique identifiers within the Reddit community. Allowing users to change their usernames could lead to confusion and potentially disrupt the platform’s ecosystem. Additionally, usernames are often tied to a user’s reputation and credibility within specific subreddits. Changing usernames could potentially be used to evade bans or manipulate the system, which goes against Reddit’s commitment to maintaining a fair and transparent community.

Exceptions to the username change policy

While Reddit’s policy on username changes is generally inflexible, there are rare exceptions. In some cases, Reddit administrators may allow a username change if there are serious privacy or security concerns. However, these instances are extremely rare and are handled on a case-by-case basis. It’s important to note that simply disliking your current username or wanting a new one is not considered a valid reason for an exception to be made.

What are my options for changing my Reddit username?

Although you can’t directly change your Reddit username, there are several alternatives you can consider if you’re determined to use a different name on the platform. These options range from creating a new account to modifying your display name. Let’s explore each of these alternatives in detail.

Creating a new Reddit account

The most straightforward option for changing your Reddit username is to create a new account using Google or Apple. This allows you to start fresh with a new username of your choice. To create a new account, you can use the Reddit app or website. When creating an account, you’ll have the opportunity to enter a new username that better reflects your current preferences. Keep in mind that you’ll be starting from scratch in terms of karma and post history.

Using a different display name

While you can’t change your username, Reddit does allow users to set a display name that’s different from their username on Reddit. This display name appears on your profile and can be changed at any time. Although it doesn’t completely replace your username, it does offer some flexibility in how you present yourself on the platform.

Deleting your current account and starting fresh

If you’re absolutely certain that you want to abandon your current username, you can choose to delete your Reddit account permanently and create a new one. This option should be considered carefully, as it means losing all your karma, post history, and saved content. Before taking this step, make sure to back up any important information or content from your old account.

How do I create a new Reddit account with my desired username?

If you’ve decided to create a new Reddit account to change your username, the process is relatively straightforward, and you can find reddit help for any questions. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create a new account with your desired username.

Step-by-step guide to creating a new account

1. Visit Reddit.com or open the Reddit app on your mobile device. 2. Click on the “Sign Up” button or tap “Create an Account” in the app. 3. If you want to change your username on Reddit, you will need to create a new account. Choose whether you want to sign up using your email address or by using your Google account or Apple ID. 4. If using an email, enter a valid email address and create a strong password. 5. Enter a new username of your choice. Reddit will let you know if the username is available or already taken. 6. Complete any additional steps, such as solving a CAPTCHA or agreeing to Reddit’s terms of service. 7. Verify your email address if required to ensure you are able to change your username. 8. Customize your new account settings and preferences.

Choosing a unique and appropriate username

When selecting a new username for your Reddit account, it’s important to choose one that is both unique and appropriate. Consider using a combination of letters, numbers, and underscores to create a memorable username. Avoid using personal information or offensive language in your username. Remember that your username will be visible to other Reddit users and cannot be changed once you finalize it.

Verifying your new account

After creating your new account, Reddit may require you to verify your email address. This step is crucial for account security and recovery purposes. Check your email inbox for a verification link from Reddit and click on it to confirm your new account. Once verified, you’ll have full access to all of Reddit’s features with your new username.

Can I transfer my Reddit karma and history to a new account?

One of the major concerns users have when considering creating a new account is the loss of their accumulated karma and post history. Unfortunately, Reddit does not provide an official method to transfer karma or history between accounts.

Understanding Reddit’s stance on account transfers

Reddit’s policy is clear that karma and account history are tied to individual accounts and cannot be transferred. This stance is in place to maintain the integrity of the karma system and prevent potential abuse. Each Reddit account is considered a separate entity, and the platform does not support merging or transferring data between accounts.

Alternatives to preserve your Reddit legacy

While you can’t transfer your karma and history, there are some ways to preserve your Reddit legacy when switching to a new account. You could create a post on your old account explaining that you’re moving to a new username and provide a link to your new account. Additionally, you can save important posts and comments from your old account for reference.

Building up karma on your new account

Starting a new account means beginning with zero karma. However, you can quickly build up your karma by actively participating in discussions, sharing quality content, and engaging with other users. Focus on contributing to communities you’re passionate about, and your karma will grow organically over time.

What should I do with my old Reddit account after creating a new one?

After creating a new Reddit account with your desired username, you’ll need to decide what to do with your old account. There are several options to consider for changing your username on Reddit, each with its own implications.

Options for managing your old account

1. Keep the old account active but dormant: You can simply stop using the old account while maintaining access to it. 2. Use the old account for different purposes: Some users choose to keep their old account for specific subreddits or types of content. 3. Delete the old account: If you’re certain you won’t need it anymore, you can choose to delete your old Reddit account permanently.

How to delete your Reddit account permanently

If you decide to delete your old Reddit account, follow these steps: 1. Log in to the account you want to delete. 2. Go to your account settings. 3. Scroll down to the bottom and look for the “Delete Account” option. 4. Click on “Delete Account” and follow the prompts to confirm the deletion. 5. Enter your username and password when prompted to finalize the deletion of your old account before you change your username on Reddit.

Considerations before abandoning your old username

Before abandoning your old Reddit username, consider the following: – Any content or karma associated with the old account will be lost. – You won’t be able to use the old username again in the future. – Subscriptions to subreddits and saved posts will be lost. – Consider informing your followers or friends about your new account if you want to maintain connections.

How can I change my Reddit display name without creating a new account?

If creating a new account isn’t an option for you, changing your Reddit display name can be a good alternative. While it doesn’t change your actual username, it does offer some flexibility in how you present yourself on the platform.

Understanding the difference between username and display name

Your Reddit username is the unique identifier that appears in your profile URL and cannot be changed. The display name, on the other hand, is a customizable field that appears on your profile and can be modified at any time. It’s important to note that your username will still be visible in certain areas of Reddit, such as when you post or comment.

Steps to update your Reddit display name

To change your Reddit display name: 1. Log in to your Reddit account. 2. Click on your profile icon and select “User Settings.” 3. Go to the “Profile” tab. 4. Look for the “Display name” field. 5. Enter your desired display name. 6. Save your changes.

Limitations of changing your display name

While changing your display name offers some flexibility, it’s important to understand its limitations. Your original username will still be visible in many areas of Reddit, including your posts and comments. The display name is primarily shown on your profile page and may not be as prominent as your username in day-to-day interactions on the platform.

What are the best practices for choosing a new Reddit username?

Whether you’re creating a new account or just want to improve your current username strategy, following best practices can help you choose a username that serves you well on Reddit.

Guidelines for creating a memorable and appropriate username

When selecting a new Reddit username, consider the following guidelines: – Make it unique and memorable. – Avoid using personal information like your real name or birth year. – Consider using a combination of words, numbers, or characters that reflect your interests. – Keep it relatively short and easy to type. – Ensure it’s appropriate for all audiences, as your username will be publicly visible.

Avoiding common username mistakes on Reddit

Some common mistakes to avoid when choosing a Reddit username include: – Using offensive or inappropriate language. – Selecting a username that’s too similar to existing popular users. – Choosing a name that’s too long or difficult to remember. – Including personal information that could compromise your privacy. – Using a username that limits you to specific topics or subreddits.

Ensuring your new username aligns with Reddit’s rules

When creating a new username, make sure it complies with Reddit’s content policy and user agreement. Avoid usernames that: – Impersonate other individuals or entities. – Contain hate speech or discriminatory language. – Violate trademarks or copyrights. – Promote illegal activities. By following these guidelines and best practices, you can select a Reddit username that serves you well and enhances your experience on the platform.

Introduction

Brief Overview of iPogo

Are you a Pokemon Go player looking to elevate your gaming experience without walking miles across your town using the latest version of iPogo? If so, you’ve probably come across iPogo, a popular third-party app designed specifically for Pokemon Go enthusiasts who want a bit more flexibility in how they play the game, especially with the latest version of iPogo for Android.

At its core, iPogo allows users to “spoof” their GPS location, enabling them to play Pokemon Go from anywhere. This means you can catch rare Pokemon, spin PokéStops, and participate in events happening anywhere in the world—all from the comfort of your mobile home. Sounds tempting, right?

Importance of iPogo for Pokemon Go Players

For many Canadian Pokemon Go players, catching that elusive shiny Pokemon or participating in a raid across town isn’t always feasible. This is where iPogo comes in handy, especially when Canadian winters make it nearly impossible to be outside for long Pokemon-hunting sessions; simply log in and start teleporting to play Pokemon Go.

But it’s not just about convenience—iPogo gives players the ability to engage with Pokemon Go in ways they might never be able to otherwise, like coordinate with friends. Imagine teleporting to a Pokemon Go event in Tokyo or participating in a raid happening in New York, all while sitting in your cozy living room in Canada, using a joystick to navigate.

Purpose of the Article

This guide is designed for Canadian players who are interested in iPogo and want to know everything there is to know about using it in 2024. We’ll cover its features, how to install it on Android, its legality, and even the risks. So, let’s get started, shall we?

What is iPogo?

Definition and Features

iPogo is a third-party GPS spoofing app primarily designed for Pokemon Go players, available for both iOS and Android. It allows users to simulate their location, enabling them to catch Pokemon from different parts of the world without physically being there. Beyond location spoofing, iPogo offers numerous features that give players an edge in the game.

Some of the standout features include:

Auto Catch: Automatically catch Pokemon without needing to tap your screen constantly.

Teleport: Instantly change your in-game location to anywhere around the globe.

Shiny Scanner: Prioritize shiny Pokemon encounters by filtering out non-shiny ones.

GPS Location Manipulation: This allows players to fake their in-game location.

Route Simulation: Walk a pre-determined route to hatch eggs and collect rewards.

Block Non-Shiny Pokemon: Filter out less desirable Pokemon from appearing on your map.

Comparison with Other GPS Spoofing Apps

When it comes to GPS spoofing for Pokemon Go, iPogo isn’t the only player in the field. Alternatives like PGSharp and Fake GPS also offer spoofing capabilities, but iPogo tends to stand out due to its user-friendly interface, added features like shiny filters, and its ability to teleport seamlessly across the globe.

How iPogo Enhances the Pokemon Go Experience

iPogo takes the Pokemon Go experience to a whole new level by allowing users to access features typically reserved for VIP players. It not only eliminates the need to physically walk around but also opens up global events and rare Pokemon captures that would otherwise be inaccessible. Whether you’re trying to catch that rare shiny or participate in a gym raid across the world, iPogo makes it possible.

iPogo Android: Key Features

Location Spoofing Capabilities

One of the most impressive features of iPogo is its ability to spoof your location. By simply choosing a spot on the map in the iPogo app, you can teleport there in seconds. Want to hunt Pokemon in Times Square or participate in a raid in Sydney? You can do it with a few taps on your iPhone while playing Pokemon Go.

Customizable Settings

iPogo offers users a variety of customizable settings that allow you to tweak the app to fit your personal play style as a Pokemon Go trainer. Whether you want to adjust your walking speed or choose specific areas to spoof, iPogo gives you the freedom to control your gameplay.

User-Friendly Interface

The app’s interface is intuitive and easy to navigate, making it accessible even for players who are new to GPS spoofing. With features laid out clearly, players can quickly master the tools that iPogo offers.

Safety Features to Avoid Bans

While Niantic (the creator of Pokemon Go) actively works against GPS spoofing, iPogo includes several safety features to help minimize the risk of getting banned. These include “cooldown timers” to ensure players don’t teleport too quickly between locations, which could raise red flags.

Integration with Pokemon Go Features

iPogo works seamlessly with Pokemon Go’s features. Whether you’re spinning PokéStops, hatching eggs, or participating in raids, iPogo enhances these experiences by letting you do it all without having to physically move.

How to Install iPogo on Android Devices

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Installing iPogo on an Android device is relatively straightforward, but it does involve downloading the APK from iPogo’s official website or other trusted sources to ensure you can play Pokemon Go safely. Here’s how you can download iPogo latest version and get started:

Download the iPogo APK from the official website.

Enable ‘Install from Unknown Sources’ on your Android device or iOS 15.

Install the APK by following the automatic on-screen instructions in the iPogo APK for Android free.

Launch iPogo and customize your settings for the best experience.

Troubleshooting Common Installation Issues

Sometimes, the installation doesn’t go as planned. If you encounter issues like installation failures, check to make sure your device settings allow installations from unknown sources. You may also need to reboot your device.

Verifying the Installation

After installing iPogo, verify that it’s working by opening Pokemon Go and checking if the app is spoofing your location as intended.

iPogo in Canada: Availability and Usage

How iPogo Works in Canada

For Canadian Pokemon Go players, iPogo functions just as it does in other regions, allowing them to enjoy the latest version of the app. You can teleport to Pokemon Go events, raids, and hot spots across the globe without having to leave your home.

Regional Differences and Considerations

Keep in mind that Canadian players may need to consider cooldown timers and the time zone differences when teleporting to different parts of the world to participate in events.

Popular Locations for Pokemon Hunting in Canada

Some popular spots for Pokemon hunting in Canada include major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. These locations often feature high PokéStop densities and are ideal for catching rare Pokemon.

Recent Updates to iPogo

Changes in Pokemon Go Affecting iPogo

With Pokemon Go’s frequent updates, the functionality of iPogo has evolved to keep up with Niantic’s changes. New events, Pokemon, and mechanics like Team Rocket battles have all been integrated into iPogo.

Community Reactions and Feedback

The iPogo community has responded positively to the app’s updates, praising the improvements in teleportation and shiny scanning. However, some users remain cautious due to the risks of bans when using spoofer features in iPogo.

Safety and Ethical Considerations

Risks of Using GPS Spoofing Apps

Using iPogo comes with its risks, especially if you root your device. Niantic

takes a strict stance against spoofing, and players caught using such apps risk account suspensions or even permanent bans.

Strategies to Minimize Risks

A noteworthy trend has emerged in the smartphone market, underscoring pronounced disparities in the length of time users retain their devices based on their operating system preferences. Recent data from the CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners) reveals a notable disparity between iPhone and Android users’ device retention habits, with Apple users showing an increasing tendency to retain their devices for extended periods.

Smartphone Upgrade Patterns Reveal Stark User Differences

There’s a big difference in how people use smartphones, depending on whether they use Android or iPhone. Android users often upgrade, while iPhone users tend to stick with their phones longer.
Recent market analysis shows this contrast. Only one in five Android users keeps their device for more than three years. Most upgrade within two years. This shows how quickly Android devices are changing. Many companies make Android devices, and they compete with each other to make new features and offer good prices.
In contrast, iPhone users are much more loyal to their phones. A third of them keep their phones for three years or longer. Apple’s focus on longevity, strong ecosystem integration, and consistent software support for older devices contributes to this extended usage pattern.
These different behaviors show that consumers have different preferences and that the two platforms have different approaches. Android is all about choice and innovation, while Apple is focused on sustainability and long-term value.

iPhone Users Embracing Longer Device Lifecycles

The latest statistical data illustrate a compelling trend: approximately one-third of iPhone owners who purchased new devices in 2024 had retained their previous phones for a period of three years or longer. This represents an increase from the 2023 figures, which indicated that 29% of users retained their devices for the same duration. This trend indicates an increasing acceptance among iPhone users of longer device lifecycles.

Several factors contribute to this phenomenon:

Apple’s Design Philosophy: The company’s focus on long-term device sustainability and incremental improvements rather than radical changes encourages users to keep their phones longer.

Ecosystem Integration: Apple’s tightly integrated ecosystem of services and products creates a stable, familiar environment that reduces the urgency to upgrade.

Financial Considerations: With Apple’s installment-based financing options, users can spread out payments over longer periods, reducing the pressure to upgrade frequently.

Android Users: A Different Approach

In contrast, Android users demonstrate markedly different behavior patterns:

Only 21% of Android users retain their phones for three years or longer

A substantial 57% of Android devices are replaced before reaching their second year of use

The turnover rate is significantly higher compared to iPhone users

This accelerated upgrade cycle can be attributed to several key factors:

Market Diversity: The Android ecosystem offers a vast array of devices across different price points, making upgrades more accessible and tempting.

Competitive Innovation: Multiple manufacturers constantly introduce new features and technologies, creating more frequent opportunities for meaningful upgrades.

Price Point Strategy: The availability of mid-range and budget options makes frequent upgrades more financially feasible for Android users.

Impact on the Smartphone Industry

This divergence in user behavior has significant implications for the smartphone market:

Environmental Considerations: Longer device retention by iPhone users potentially contributes to reduced electronic waste

Manufacturing Strategies: These patterns influence how manufacturers approach device development and marketing

Market Dynamics: The different upgrade cycles affect how companies plan their product releases and pricing strategies

Looking Ahead

As the importance of sustainability grows and technology advances, it is possible that these retention patterns may undergo a transformation. Manufacturers on both sides of the ecosystem will be required to strike a balance between innovation and sustainability, which may result in the emergence of novel approaches to the marketing and sale of smartphones to consumers.

The current trends indicate that while iPhone users are adopting a pattern of longer-term device ownership, Android users continue to embrace the diversity and frequent innovation cycles of their chosen ecosystem. This fundamental distinction in user behavior is likely to persist, influencing the trajectory of the smartphone market.

The Android founder’s project is in trouble. The startup director spent his money on racing, a mortgage, two Lamborghinis, and a failed HP deal

Smartphone manufacturer Osom, created by the descendants of the failed startup Essential and “father” of Android, risks repeating its fate. A former employee says company director Jason Keats stole money, ruining a deal with HP and leaving the company broke.

Lawsuit Osom Android authority

OSOM Products is being sued by former employees of Essential. CEO Jason Keats is accused of misusing company funds. Mary Stone Ross, OSOM’s former Chief Privacy Officer, says Keats used company money for personal things like buying two Lamborghinis, paying for racing and covering his mortgage. Ross wants to see OSOM’s finances. She says they made the company unstable.
The lawsuit shows Keats spent company money on himself. Keats tried to sell OSOM to HP, but the price kept going down. OSOM says the lawsuit is wrong and wants to prove it in court.
OSOM is closing. Most employees will lose their jobs. The company wanted to make private devices but couldn’t find a market. It made a Solana phone. The company has cancelled a new device due to money problems.

Chaos breaks out on the company’s dime.

Former Osom Products chief privacy officer Mary Stone Ross has sued the company and its current CEO, Jason Keats, Android Authority reports. The former employee says the CEO misused company money.

Mary Ross, who left Osom in May 2024, wants the court to let her see Osom’s financial and accounting records. These could help prove that Keats was involved in financial fraud. The appeal will be heard by the Delaware Court of Chancery on August 30, 2024.

Ross says the CEO bought two expensive Lamborghinis for himself with company money. He also paid his own mortgage, bought first-class airline tickets, and spent on car racing, the lawsuit says.

The ex-employee says the company’s former CFO quit because he didn’t agree with the CEO’s approach to managing funds. The new CFO, chosen by Keats, is said to ignore the misuse of the company’s funds.

Ross says HP considered buying Osom. The US tech giant has tried to make a deal, but it has failed and the price has fallen.

The lawsuit says that Osom’s money is almost gone. Keats thinks the company needs more money to stay open.

Osom said the allegations were false. “We know about the false claims made by a former employee and will prove them wrong in court,” an Osom spokesperson told Android Authority.

A short history of Essential and Osom

Osom Products was founded in 2024 by people from Essential, the startup, the creator of Android.

Essential is known for the Essential Phone, released in 2024. You can expand the device with additional modules. The back of the case has a special connector with a magnetic snap, allowing you to easily install additional components. At first, buyers could get a charging dock, a 60 GHz wireless adapter, and an external video camera.

The device didn’t sell well, partly because of the price. The device cost $700, excluding expansion modules. The iPhone 8 Plus, another Apple product, went on sale in autumn 2024 at a price starting at $799.

In 2024, Essential introduced the Essential Phone PH-2 concept with a narrow screen that resembled a TV remote. The unusual screen format was good for social media. Rubin came up with the idea. The Essential Phone PH-2 was never made in large numbers.

After Essential failed, some employees, including Jason Keats, who had called the PH-1 a “developer’s nightmare,” started their own company, Osom Products, in Canada. Keats started the company and became its CEO.

The company’s first product was the Osom OV1, a security-focused smartphone. The device was expected to go on sale in summer 2024. In June 2024, the company changed its plans. The Osom OV1 was renamed the Saga, and its development continued with the Solana blockchain project. The name and concept of the smartphone also changed. It is now aimed at cryptocurrency enthusiasts.

In spring 2024, Osom started sending Saga devices purchased by pre-order. The gadget cost $650, plus a $100 deposit.

In early 2024, the second Solana crypto smartphone was announced. The device will ship in 2025.

Google’s URL shortener, Goo.gl, has been a popular tool for creating short links since its inception. However, the service is now shutting down, leaving many users wondering about the fate of their shortened URLs and searching for Goo.gl alternative. This article will explore the reasons behind the shutdown, its impact on existing links, and what steps you can take to prepare for the transition.

What is Goo.gl and why is it shutting down?

Understanding Google’s URL shortener service

Goo.gl was Google’s official URL shortener, launched to provide users with a simple way to create short, easily shareable links. The service allowed users to shorten long URLs into compact Goo.gl links, making them more manageable for social media posts, emails, and other online communications. It also offered basic analytics, allowing users to track the performance of their shortened URLs.

Reasons behind Google’s decision to discontinue Goo.gl

Google’s decision to shut down Goo.gl is part of a broader strategy to streamline its services and focus on more advanced technologies. The company announced on its Google Developers blog that it would be transitioning away from the Goo.gl URL shortener in favor of Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). FDL offers more robust features, including the ability to create smart URLs that work across multiple platforms and provide a more seamless user experience.

Timeline for Goo.gl’s shutdown

The shutdown of Goo.gl is occurring in phases. As of April 13, 2024, new users were no longer able to create short links through the Goo.gl console. Existing users could continue to create short links until March 30, 2024. However, the most crucial date to remember is August 25, 2025. On this date, all Goo.gl links will stop working, and users will no longer be able to access their Goo.gl console or any analytics data associated with their shortened URLs.

How will the Goo.gl shutdown affect my shortened URLs?

Impact on existing shortened links

The current flow of your Goo.gl links will remain unchanged until August 25, 2025. Until then, all existing Goo.gl short links will continue to redirect to their intended destinations. However, it’s important to note that you can’t change or modify these links after March 30, 2024. This means that if you need to update the destination of a Goo.gl link, you’ll need to create a new short link using an alternative service.

Will my Goo.gl links stop working after 2025?

Yes, all Goo.gl links will stop working on August 25, 2025. After this date, when someone clicks on a Goo.gl short link, they will be directed to an interstitial page explaining that the link is no longer active. This change will affect all existing Goo.gl URLs, regardless of when they were created or how frequently they are used.

Options for preserving your shortened URLs

To ensure the longevity of your shortened URLs beyond 2025, you’ll need to take action before the shutdown. One option is to migrate your links to a new URL shortening service. Many alternatives offer import features that allow you to transfer your existing short links. Another option is to update any published content, such as blog posts or social media profiles, with the full, original URLs instead of the Goo.gl short links. This may be time-consuming but will ensure that your links remain functional after the shutdown.

What are the best alternatives to Goo.gl for URL shortening?

Comparing popular URL shortening services

Several URL shortening services can serve as alternatives to Goo.gl. Some popular options include Bitly, TinyURL, and Ow.ly. Each of these services offers its own set of features, such as custom domains, detailed analytics, and integration with various platforms. For example, Bitly provides robust analytics and the ability to create branded short links, while TinyURL offers a simple, no-frills approach to URL shortening.

Features to look for in a Goo.gl replacement

When choosing a Goo.gl replacement, consider features that align with your needs. Look for services that offer reliable redirection, comprehensive analytics, and the ability to customize your short links. If you’re a developer, check if the service provides an API for integration with your applications. Additionally, consider factors such as link permanence, security features, and compatibility with platforms like Google Workspace or LinkedIn.

How to migrate your links to a new URL shortener

To migrate your links from Goo.gl to a new URL shortener, start by exporting your data from the Goo.gl console before it becomes inaccessible. Many alternative services offer import tools that can help you transfer your links in bulk. If an automated import option isn’t available, you may need to manually recreate your short links on the new platform. Be sure to update any published content or automated systems that use your Goo.gl links to reflect the new shortened URLs.

Can I still use Goo.gl to shorten links until 2025?

Limitations on creating new shortened URLs

As of March 30, 2024, it is no longer possible to create new shortened URLs using Goo.gl. This limitation applies to both the web interface and the API. If you attempt to create a new short link through Goo.gl, you’ll receive a notification informing you that the service is no longer available for creating new links. However, existing Goo.gl short links will continue to function until the final shutdown date in 2025.

Accessing your Goo.gl dashboard and analytics

While you can’t create new links, you can still access your Goo.gl dashboard and view analytics for your existing shortened URLs until August 25, 2025. This allows you to monitor the performance of your links and gather valuable data before the service is completely discontinued. It’s advisable to regularly backup this analytics data, as it will become inaccessible after the shutdown.

Managing existing Goo.gl links before the shutdown

Although you can’t modify existing Goo.gl links, you can still manage them to some extent. This includes tracking their performance through the provided analytics and deciding which links are crucial to migrate to a new service. Consider creating a comprehensive inventory of your Goo.gl links, noting their destinations and usage, to facilitate a smooth transition to an alternative URL shortener.

What should developers know about the Goo.gl API deprecation?

Impact on applications using the Goo.gl API

Developers who have integrated the Goo.gl API into their applications will need to make significant changes. As of March 30, 2024, the Goo.gl API no longer supports creating new short links. Applications that rely on Goo.gl for generating short URLs will need to be updated to use an alternative API. However, the API can still be used to retrieve analytics data for existing links until the final shutdown in 2025.

Alternative APIs for URL shortening

Several URL shortening services offer APIs that can replace the functionality of Goo.gl. Popular options include the Bitly API, which provides extensive features for creating and managing short links programmatically. Other alternatives include the TinyURL API and the Rebrandly API. When selecting an alternative, consider factors such as rate limits, pricing, and the range of features offered to ensure they meet your application’s requirements.

Migrating from Goo.gl API to Firebase Dynamic Links

Google recommends transitioning to Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL) as a replacement for the Goo.gl API. FDL offers more advanced features, including the ability to create links that behave differently based on the user’s device or app installation status. To migrate, you’ll need to set up a Firebase project, integrate the FDL SDK into your application, and update your code to use the FDL API for creating and managing short links.

How can I prepare for the Goo.gl shutdown in 2025?

Steps to take before Goo.gl links stop working

To prepare for the Goo.gl shutdown, start by conducting a thorough audit of all your shortened URLs. Identify which links are still actively used and prioritize them for migration. Choose a new URL shortening service and begin the process of recreating your important links on the new platform. Update any documentation, marketing materials, or digital assets that contain Goo.gl links to reflect the new shortened URLs. Consider implementing redirects from your own domain to manage the transition more smoothly.

Backing up your shortened URL data

Before Goo.gl becomes inaccessible, it’s crucial to back up all your shortened URL data. This includes the original long URLs, their corresponding short links, and any associated analytics data. Export this information from your Goo.gl dashboard and store it securely. This backup will be invaluable for recreating your links on a new platform and for maintaining historical records of your link performance.

Communicating changes to your audience or clients

If you’ve shared Goo.gl links with a wide audience or use them in client-facing materials, it’s important to communicate the upcoming changes. Inform your users, customers, or clients about the Goo.gl shutdown and any actions they need to take, such as updating bookmarks or references to your shortened URLs. Consider sending out notifications through email, social media, or your website to ensure that your audience is aware of the transition and can continue to access your content without interruption.

Find the Best Alternative Before Your Links Stop Working in 2025

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, one of Google’s long-standing services, the URL shortener Goo.gl, is set to become a thing of the past. This article will guide you through the transition process, exploring alternatives with a focus on Goo.by, and addressing key concerns for users affected by this change.

Over the last few years the Big 3 Carriers in Canada (Rogers, Bell, and Telus) have been met with some competition from new entrants WIND and Mobilicity. While WIND and Mobilicity are still reserved for select markets, they are slowly establishing themselves as legitimate alternatives. And the biggest reason they are able to compete is with great plans, such as these new leaked ones from WiND.

MobileSyrup was tipped off that WIND will be doing away with their current two plans and introducing three new plans to the market. Here’s the details of them below:

$20 per month:
– Unlimited Local calling
– Unlimited WIND-to-WIND Canada-wide calling
– Unlimited Texts within Canada
– Call Control included (Missed Call alerts, Conference calling, Call Forwarding, Call Waiting))
– Data: $5/100MB up to a max of $25/month
– Extras such as Voicemail are $8/month, Unlimited US calling and texting is $10/month
– “No system access fees, no 911 fees, no activation fees. No Joke”

$30 per month:
– Unlimited province-wide calling
– Unlimited WIND-to-WIND Canada-wide calling
– Unlimited Texts/Picture/Video within Canada
– Call Control included (Missed Call alerts, Conference calling, Call Forwarding, Call Waiting))
– Unlimited Data
– Extras such as Voicemail are $8/month, Unlimited US calling and texting is $10/month
– “No system access fees, no 911 fees, no activation fees. No Joke”

$40 per month:
– Unlimited Canada-wide calling
– Unlimited WIND-to-WIND Canada-wide calling
– Unlimited Texts/Picture/Video International, US and Canada
– Call Control included (Missed Call alerts, Conference calling, Call Forwarding, Call Waiting))
– Unlimited Data
– World Saver is included
– Extras such as Voicemail are $8/month, Unlimited US calling and texting is $10/month
– “No system access fees, no 911 fees, no activation fees. No Joke”

Those are all fantastic plans and none of the Big 3 have anything to really compare to them right now. Of course the Big 3 all have their sub brands to offer lower costs plans but even those can’t match up with these offerings. Now, I know that the coverage for WIND is still pretty spotty but with great plans like these it’s definitely worth a consideration.

Not too shabby right? Now the majority of these devices will only work with WIND or Mobilicity so keep that in mind before you run out and buy. However, if you are on one of those carriers you can get a great phone at a great price.

The Nexus 4 is still in stock on the Google Play Store which leads me to believe that LG and Google have finally worked out whatever kinks they had in the manufacturing process initially. But just in case you don’t want to order online you’ll soon be able to pick up the phone at your local WIND retailer, although you may be paying a little bit more.

Some pricing has surfaced via a tip on MobileSyrup for the upcoming device. To purchase the phone outright you’ll be looking at $549. On a WINDTAb 20 you’ll be paying $449, WINDTab 30 you pay $349, and WINDTab 40 you pay $249. So while the outright price is a good chunk higher, if you plan on sticking with WIND for a little while you could save yourself a few bucks by purchasing through WIND.

If you are interested in picking one of these up through WIND you’ll only have to wait until February 4 to do so.

The sleek and stylish Samsung Gear S2 has just made itself another home here in Canada as Telus has added the wearable to their line up. Like BestBuy, Telus is selling the watch for $399.99 but they only have it available in Black and they do not carry the Classic model.

Just in case you forgot, the S2 features a 1.2″ circular AMOLED display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage an a 250 mAh battery. Despite running Samsung’s own Tizen OS, the watch is compatible with the majority of Android devices so compatibility should not be an issue with all of you Android enthusiasts out there.

Although I’m quite fond of Android Wear, I’m excited to try out Samsung’s latest offering as the UI and rotating bezel are pretty intriguing.
