Some tweets are serious and logical, others are reflective and from the heart, while many are simply the ridiculous observations of a person prone to ridiculous observations.

My overriding intent on Twitter, I suppose, is to avoid boring you. Boring Twitter fodder should be avoided and subject to capital punishment. There is simply no excuse for boring others. Or even being bored! In our home, we do not allow our children to say, “I’m bored”. Being bored, they are told, is for boring people.

Whoa! Just noticed that I was way off the subject! Sorry. What was the subject?

I think I was attempting to explain my recent absence from the blogosphere with the excuse, “I am twittering! I am on Facebook!” However, if you subscribe to the blogs of my publisher, Mike Hyatt, or follow him on Twitter, or on Facebook, or on MySpace, or on LinkedIn, or on ThumbsTextedToTheNub.com, or any one of a hundred pieces of social media he employs, you know just how hollow my excuse sounds.

But Mike is a genius, I would argue. How else to explain a man who can write twenty or thirty blogs a day with one hand while simultaneously twittering and Facebooking and MySpacing with the other? Sheesh, he probably flosses, too!

Okay, I know I need to blog more than every few weeks. I promise to be better at it. Maybe I should say it this way: I promise to be more prolific. How can I really promise to be better? Writing, for me, is work. Sorry if that disappoints you, but there it is.

I am often amused by people who seem impressed by the “New York Times Bestselling Author” part of my resume. These folks, often after telling me “I’ve always wanted to write a book . . ." go on to wonder aloud at someone like me who has such an obvious love for writing. Ha! You see . . . (drum roll . . . secret about to be revealed . . .) I don’t love to write. I don’t even like to write. I do, however, love having written!

You do understand the difference, right? I love being finished with a manuscript. I love giving books away. I love being “an author”. I love making a living this way. But love to write? Are you kidding? I mean, every time I sit down in front of the computer, there are only fifty things I can think of that I’d rather be doing!

Look…I’m not even particularly “gifted” in this way. Think about it . . . I wasn’t even the best writer in my Senior English class! To this day, I can’t diagram a sentence. Who knows what the predicate and the indirect object are or how the prepositional phrase aligns with the subject? (Dare I add, who cares?) That’s what editors are for and I never wanted to be one of those . . .

I always wanted to be a difference maker—a person who was able to work a little magic in the lives of other people with something I noticed . . .

And here is something I noticed a while back that has allowed me to succeed and even to guide people to success in areas other than writing . . . It’s basis is found in a very simple question. And the question is:

Can you make yourself do something you’d rather not do, in order to get a result you would like to have?

When you are able to answer this question affirmatively, you will experience a massive shift in your perception of the immediate future. This single concept can dramatically alter your relationships, your finances, and even your health!

The deeper question, of course, is:

What result would you like to have?

How healthy (or unhealthy) are you willing to be? What kind of marriage do you really want to experience? Does it really matter to you whether or not your family is debt-free?

Okay . . . So you want to be in peak physical shape . . . You desire a marriage filled with love, excitement, and laughter . . . You crave freedom from the stress and uncertainty of monthly bills . . . What activities must be done—with a single-minded focus—to achieve the life you long for?

And can you make yourself do those things?

I am betting that you can. Remember, I am a writer . . . yet even I know that writing is not hard and good writing is not rare. Truly, there are tens of thousands of people in the world with awesome stories who probably write better than I do. But the bottom line is that writing is just one of the many things most people don’t make themselves do . . .

There it is. No more sugarcoating or explanation needed. Do you truly want to succeed in your chosen endeavor? Then, can you make yourself do something you’d rather not do, in order to get a result you would like to have?

Yes or no?

Uncategorized

Stand By...Each Other

The past few weeks have been dizzying to me. The uncertainty of releasing a new book—KNOWING one cannot control what happens to it—along with the sheer volume of work and travel that goes with the experience… Well, lets just say it can seem overwhelming.

It is not my intention to bore you with the details of a long process that in the end might leave you thinking I was boasting about how hard our team worked. Instead, my amazement at what has begun to happen with The Noticer has sent my thoughts in another direction entirely.

As I mentioned earlier, one simply cannot control what happens to a book when it is out of the author’s hands. Neither an author nor publisher can control where it is placed in the bookstore, how it is placed in the bookstore, how long it stays in the bookstore, or whether the book even gets in a bookstore in the first place! So forget trying to force a book onto one of the significant best-seller lists…Even Amazon has become wise to the ways of those who would manipulate its ranking system.

What ultimately happens with a book is simply and purely up to the readers—word of mouth trumps all. Therefore it has been with grateful astonishment that I have watched you begin to tell others about The Noticer and it’s possible value in their life. In essence, I have seen a huge team of people do something that is simply impossible for a small team to accomplish… And I am inspired to think outside this tiny box.

As people who don’t even know each other, who do care and are willing to work, what might we accomplish that can be so much greater than a mere book for our community, our nation, our world, and our God? And why does our country seem so disconnected right now? How firm are we in the actions and beliefs that have allowed us to become divided along political, racial, even financial lines?

These are simply questions for us to ponder as we watch this short video of people who are significantly “apart”, yet have managed to come together in order to create something incredible.

So I ask you…who can we stand by?

Yours,

Andy

It is a movement to encourage us to step outside our busy schedules and avoid waiting until a wedding, graduation or even a funeral to take notice of the special, influential people in our lives. By noticing those who have made a difference for you, you not only acknowledge their contribution, but will gain a new perspective on your own journey.

This is a grassroots initiative that I hope will have a positive impact—however small—on our country in this uncertain time. I know that when I sat down to think about the five people who have made the biggest impact on my journey, it brought to mind so many gifts that I have been given along the way and reminded me how lucky I am.

Some of you may be wondering how you can take part in The Noticer Project and begin “noticing” those influential people in your life. There is no right answer to that question. For some it may be taking their high school English teacher out for a cup of coffee to say thanks. For others it may be writing a letter or email to a friend they haven’t connected with in years. For those of you who are looking for a more public way to notice your five, it may be as public as posting a Facebook note, joining The Noticer Project Facebook group or posting a few words about the five most influential people in your life on TheNoticerProject.com.

I can’t tell you how excited I am about The Noticer Project and I look forward to reading soon the stories you have about those you’ve noticed! Thanks in advance for anything you can do to help spread the word about The Noticer Project. If you have a website or blog that you would like to help spread the word, you can find The Noticer Project banners here.

Your friend,

Andy

Uncategorized

A New Dog!

It has been a quiet house for the past several months since our beloved Dalmatian, Lucy, passed away.

Even with a six year old boy (Adam), a nine year old boy (Austin), and three cats (Figaro, Daniel, and Angel)—you just can’t raise the roof quite as high as you can with a dog in the mix. So just to be certain that the decibel level was redlining, we got a puppy.

Then last night…Angel had kittens.

If you are keeping score, that is two boys, one dog, eight cats, Saint Polly, and shell-shocked me. I don’t really get this. Don’t people usually add one animal at a time until they have reached a comfortable limit? After Lucy died, how did we go (in a span of several weeks) from one cat to three cats to eight cats and a dog??? I am not in control here…

Anyway…the dog. I am very proud of our dog. He is exactly what I wanted. I wanted a boy dog. Got it. Big dog. Check. Hunting dog. He is. No shedding. That, too. We got the perfect dog.

For a while, it looked like we might get what I really wanted…a Portuguese Water Dog. Austin wanted a Chocolate Lab. Adam wanted a White Chocolate Lab. Polly was strangely quiet, though the boys all knew it was Mama who swung the vote so we all lobbied fiercely.

Turned out, the dog she settled on is a rare breed so we actually had to drive three hundred miles to get him. No, sir. You can’t get a Normandy Retriever on just any street corner. He is big (for a puppy) and solid black with the softest hair you ever felt on any dog. And as God is my witness, he has webbed feet. Webbed feet! A big, black, clumsy puppy with feet that have folds of skin between the toes. Like a duck.

You will remember Normandy Retrievers from the first scenes of the movie “Saving Private Ryan” as the dogs in a couple of the landing craft. They were never an American Kennel Club registered breed but had gained some popularity in Europe during the first half of the 1900’s as a working/hunting dog. Adopted by British troops as bomb dogs during the early part of World War II, it was the Normandy’s webbed feet and buoyant coat that first brought the breed to the attention of the United States Marine Corp.

Needing the unique combination of a rescue animal strong enough to carry a pack and smart enough to learn silent hand signals, the Normandy Retriever was chosen over the German Shepard, which was in great use during that time, and the breed we know today as the Labrador Retriever. And while many breeders claim Labrador genetics in the Normandy dog and while it is true that both originated in cold, windswept climes, the web-footed resemblance has never been enough to make an actual case-by-case historical comparison.

So why did the Lab rise to such prominence while the Normandy’s popularity plummeted into almost total obscurity? That, my friend, is what Paul Harvey would’ve called the rest of the story!

On that horrible day of June 6, 1944, as the Allied Invasion was launched onto the shores of Europe, more than one hundred black Normandy Retrievers were scattered throughout the thousands of landing craft. And as luck would have it, almost all the dogs were killed in the assault. The very few that did survive were abandoned by fast moving troops given to the care of local villagers.

In an odd footnote to that event, an effort was made to recover the dogs from the villagers after the war. After all, these were highly trained animals and still the property of Uncle Sam. The effort was half hearted at best. By then, the dogs were entrenched with their own “families” and were finally forgotten. They were dismissed by the war office as “bad luck dogs” and in one communiqué, those words were actually written. Bad Luck Dogs. As if the dogs themselves had something to do with the frightening welcome they received on the beaches of….Normandy.

It is curious, isn’t it? No one seems to know whether the breed was given the name that stuck—the Normandy Retriever—before or after the landing on the beaches of Normandy. What is not in dispute, however, is the fact that the generations of dogs since that time can all be traced back to that few litters of pups that began appearing in that region of France after the Great War.

And now we have one. We wanted this dog to be calm and intelligent with a sense of wisdom about him. And since he is jet black, we have named him after one of my favorite characters from history. Our new puppy, George Washington Carver, will be called Carver by us…his new family!

Click here to see an image of Carver!

Uncategorized

I Loved Lucy

She was one of twelve littermates when we chose her fifteen years ago and believe me, twelve Dalmatian puppies can seem like “a hundred and one” when they come tumbling into a room. They were six weeks old and (remember the movie…) their spots were just beginning to appear. The chubby female leading the pack promptly climbed into my wife’s lap and the selection process was over. It was as if she said, “I’m the one you came for. Quit looking at these other guys. Come on, come on, lets go!”

We named her “Lucy” and she took over the house immediately. Every rug was her personal bathroom, every shoe her dearest teething toy. Oh, we had rules, it was just that none of them mattered. Lucy went wherever she wanted to go and slept wherever she wanted to sleep.

Before long, at least, Lucy began to prefer the outdoors to “do her business”, but the house was still her personal fiefdom. She was just as comfortable eating our dinner from the table as she was eating her food from a bowl on the floor. Lucy would start every night on her own blanket in the corner of the bedroom, yet somehow manage to quietly make her way into our bed and UNDER OUR COVERS every single night. On Polly’s side, of course.

We let her get away with it all. If Lucy had been human, she would have been a con artist. I still think about her and marvel. Of all the dogs I’ve had in my life, she wasn’t the smartest. Or the prettiest or the strongest. Or the best watchdog. It is odd, I know. Lucy wasn’t the best at anything…she was just the best, period, my favorite of all time. She was pure love in a fifty pound sack of spots.

Polly and I had only been together a few years when Lucy came into our lives and, as I remember, neither of us were paragons of compromise at that time. We loved each other fiercely, but disagreements were frequent as we navigated the uncharted waters of early- married life.

Lucy was Solomon-like in her ability to love us both and never take sides. She would console Polly after a dispute, listening without agreeing, understanding without approving. And of course she quietly counseled me in similar circumstances. Many times during those days, I feel certain that Lucy heard one of us say something hurtful about the other that we probably should not have said. But she never took sides, never told one what the other had said, and was quick to dismiss our anger in any event.

She was at her best when Austin and Adam were born. We still watch videos of Lucy greeting each of them as we came home from the hospital. They grew into toddlers, pulling on her ears, crawling on her back and she was never grouchy, never impatient. Lucy swam with Polly, ran the beach with the boys, and wrote several books with me.

As good as she was though, Lucy was never able to conquer the extreme addiction she had to food. Any food. Her food, your food, the cat’s food, and anything that looked like food. Never mind trying to hide something or keeping it locked away. Once, after having their sack lunches stolen for several days, construction workers next door caught Lucy jumping through the cab window of their pick-up truck and back out again with their lunch bags in her mouth.

She unwrapped Christmas presents that had food in them and would eat the paper, too. She consumed soap, liver, lettuce, onions, lemons, dead fish, and live bees. The dog was absolutely unapologetic in her brazen quest for one more bite. Lucy just couldn’t help herself. She would take a popsicle off the stick in a child’s hand or look you in the eye as she snatched the ribeye from your plate. It was a sickness. We knew it wasn’t her fault so we just learned to live with it.

Then, there was the ham. It was a big, beautiful HoneyBaked gift from Aunt Barbara that had been delivered to our front porch by Mark, the UPS man at about four o’clock one afternoon. Well before five o’clock, Lucy had chewed a head sized hole in that box and eaten the entire ham. The entire nine-pound ham. She ate it with her head still inside the box and left a bone about the size of my thumb when she was finished. Yes sir, I am still amazed that a fifty-pound dog could eat a nine-pound ham. How would you like to eat 20% of your body weight at one sitting?

There are enough “Lucy stories” to fill a book and one day, I might do just that. Everyone loved that dog. When we decided to put an invisible electric fence around our yard to discourage Lucy’s increasingly wide-ranging food robberies, Dave and Maryann next door insisted we put the fence around their property too. Just so she could visit. Many were the evenings we’d call at bedtime for Dave to send Lucy home.

Kevin and Glenda kept Lucy at their house several years ago when we evacuated for Hurricane Ivan. And when our house was destroyed, she stayed with them for more than a year. Now that I think about it, very few dogs can claim more than one family as their own, but Lucy could.

Her birthday was Thanksgiving (which seemed appropriate in several ways) and we were fortunate to mark fourteen of those before Lucy was gone. I learned a lot with Lucy. I learned a lot from her, too. She was a great example for me about how to greet people and was a constant reminder about how to treat my wife. Don’t think that I didn’t thank her for those lessons and her unyielding devotion to my family as she took her last breaths. I was with her at that moment, you know—when she closed her eyes, sweet head in my lap, and just went to sleep.

It has actually been a while now that Lucy has been gone, but I just couldn’t bring myself to make an official announcement—write or say anything—until today. It was tough for a while (especially as Adam continued to pray for “God to bring Lucy back alive”) but the heartache has slowly been replaced with a wonder at how blessed we were to have been her family. What an incredible part of our life that crazy dog became!

As you might suspect, we’re beginning to think now of a successor. Obviously, whoever the new pooch turns out to be, he or she will have impossibly large paws to fill. And I’m sure that we will fall in love immediately and begin to make room in our hearts for a new “character”. That having been said, we understand that the new dog might turn out to be smarter or better behaved or have a more manageable appetite. But the new dog won’t be better…

Because Lucy was the best.

Uncategorized

A Request for Help

Interviews are a necessary, sometimes torturous part of what I do for a living. Unless you have experienced it (and I know some of you have) nothing can be as mind-numbingly uncomfortable as talking about yourself. In fact, the only thing worse than talking about yourself would be doing it repeatedly.

Some interviewers make it worse by asking questions that clue you in to the fact that they are not even remotely prepared. “Today we have with us Andy Anderson! Andy, tell me about yourself.”

Or they confuse you with someone else. “Please welcome Olympic Gold medalist…”

Occasionally, an interviewer will introduce you with a description you’d rather avoid. “Here to motivate us all for the next hour…”

As hard as it is to be excited about an interview, there are those who are excellent at crafting an interesting conversation from worn out subjects. A good questioner can reveal fresh new seams of conjecture and discovery. For instance, John, from the ABC affiliate in Minneapolis asked me the other day, “Considering your accomplishments and adventures, when the light goes out on your life, what do you want your last memory to be?” Wow! What an awesome question. Even after babbling something for the camera, I have been contemplating the answer ever since he asked!

So interviews are a double-edged sword. No normal person wants to talk about themselves, but as a public figure, if you don’t talk about yourself a little bit, folks might not be aware you exist. This fact was brought home to me the other day with a peculiar question about my career. “What,” a newspaper reporter asked, “is the biggest professional disappointment that the public does not know you have endured?”

Sheesh, I thought. I’ve never been asked that before. But the answer came to me easily because I am reminded of it every day. Simply put, it is this: The vast majority of people who have read The Traveler’s Gift, do not know I have written anything else!

I am often approached in airports or restaurants. People want to say hello or discuss a situation they are going through. I really do enjoy these times, but it kills me when they say, “The Traveler’s Gift is one of my favorites…are you ever going to write another book?” That kills me. Kills me.

See, I think Island of Saints is the best thing I’ve done. And I’m proud of some of the others, too. I don’t consider myself a “braggy” kind of person and it is not in my nature to self promote, so this can be a big problem in an industry that relies on public awareness. After all, if your life’s mission is to produce books and material that will help other people, but you feel uncomfortable telling folks you have the stuff….well. you see my challenge.

So this time (as I take a deep breath), with a new book coming out soon, I am determined to ask for help. From you. I am already cringing as I write this and if you feel strange about me asking, please…stop reading now. I’d rather you and I just stay friends… But if you are one of the people who have seen some good come out of my work and wouldn’t mind spreading the word, move on to the next paragraph…

For a bit more than two years, I have worked on a book that I feel might be my most important. In preparation for it’s release, as I test the life solutions revealed in this work against the challenges of today’s world, I am excited to see the “light bulbs” come on in the hearts and minds of early readers.

The Noticer is a story that begins by detailing the period in my life when I was homeless, living under a pier on the Gulf Coast. In it, I reveal the identity of the old man who helped and encouraged me during that time. His name was Jones and it was he who started me reading the small, orange biographies that eventually lead me to the Seven Decisions in The Traveler’s Gift. Having now returned to the small town of Orange Beach, Jones begins to shape lives, dealing with situations in a very unusual way.

I hope and pray that this will be a favorite you will want to share with family and friends. In an effort to somehow get major newspapers, magazines, and television interested, we are attempting to build a “buzz” before The Noticer comes out. We are making available small, 8 x 10 easels that have the cover of the book reproduced on the front with an announcement stating: Coming this Spring from the author of The Traveler’s Gift.

If you have access to a location where people might see one of these easels, I would really appreciate your help in placing them around the country. Cash registers in restaurants or retail stores, barber shops, churches, airport ticket counters…virtually any place that people frequent would be awesome. If it is in a place that would allow you to talk about “this guy named Andy and these odd books he writes”, that would be even better! Do you have more than one location for which you wouldn’t mind being responsible? Ya want two? Five? I would really appreciate it!

Anyway, fill out this form and we will get you the easels within a few weeks.

The intent is to release this book with as much noise as possible. (Trust me, the “quiet” release has not been effective in the past! Ha!) Our goal is to get the book recognized and in as many hands as possible the moment it is released in hopes of making it onto the big newspaper best seller lists. This in turn would provide more opportunities for the book to get into the hands of people who could use the encouragement and information.

Again, thanks so much for your attention to this. If you have some fish that need cleaning or yard work that needs done in the future in exchange for your efforts, I am sure we can work something out!

Your friend,

Andy

Uncategorized
