ESPN: A Man Obsessed (TV)

ESPN put together an ambitious multimedia production team to tell the story of Adventurer Charlie Wittmack and his World Tri, led by Emmy-award winning ESPN senior writer Wayne Drehs—the final story stretches across an amazing five channels including ESPN.com, ESPN2′s Outside The Lines, ESPN The Magazine, ESPN Radio and ESPN’s Sports Center. As part of the production team, whose work spanned twelve months and three continents, I shot the video footage from the Thames and English Channel swim that aired on ESPN’s Outside The Lines and ESPN.com’s impressive multimedia E-Ticket: A Man Obsessed.

A Man Obsessed won two 2011 EPPY Awards, which are among the most prestigious awards for online journalism, for Best Sport Video and Best Enterprise Feature on a website with 1+ million viewers (more info)

In response to a need to connect and grow a stronger creative and entrepreneurial ethos in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids region, ICCReatives.us was conceived with community in mind. Along with the fine-folks at Cramer Dev, the site was created as a tool to highlight, expose and connect creatives in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids metropolis (population 350,000).

The website is community-driven (and curated) and allows individuals to upload basic bio, a photo and their contact information, in an effort to develop a community-source director of creatives in the area. The site’s meteoric growth in its first few weeks of its launch, far outpaced any expectations and convinced us that we had tapped into an unmet need. The site is now used as a tool by the community to find like-minded collaborators, creative services and stories of interesting people doing interesting things in the region.

The World Tri (video/web/design)

I worked as the creative director for The World Tri, an unprecedented human endurance challenge created by adventurer Charlie Wittmack, attempting to complete ‘The World’s Most Difficult Triathlon.’ (That is, he’s swimming 250 miles down The River Thames in England and across The English Channel to France, then biking 9,000 miles from France across Europe and Asia to India, then running 900 miles from Calcutta, India to the top of Mt Everest.)

I was brought onto the project just before the expedition began and was asked to lead the rebranding of the project’s identity, as well as design a website for the endeavor that the non-technical members of the team could easily update (even with the limited internet of Central and South Asia).

I then spent two months on the road with Charlie and his team, producing and editing the creative content, producing video ‘webisodes,’ photographing the expedition, and maintaining the project’s web and social media presence (all while crossing Europe in the back of a truck).

The website drew 25,000 unique visitors in its first two months, with the average website visitor spending more than 5 minutes on the site. The expedition garnered news coverage from The BBC, USA Today, AOL News, Men’s Journal, The Sydney Morning Herald and ESPN among other major media outlets.

The project also has an education and global health component to inspire kids to try to change the world and to address the exceptionally high levels of maternal mortality in childbirth in Nepal.

The World Magic Project (TV)

I worked as executive producer and co-creator for this television concept, which follows magician Nate Staniforth on a trip around the world in search of magic. From voodoo doctors in Haiti to snake charmers in India to fortune tellers deep in the African bush, Nate circles the globe in search of magic, while seeking to understand our universal fascination with amazement and the unexplainable.

The project was filmed over the course of 30-days traveling overland in Thailand, India and China. We hired Indian, Thai and Chinese crews, and I served as line producer and 1st camera operator for the shoot.

16 To Life (feature film)

I worked as an associate producer on 16 To Life, a romantic comedy from Emmy-nominated director Becky Smith (Queer Eye For The Straight Guy), a film that puts a wry, witty and unpredictable ensemble cast in a small-town locale reminiscent of a Capra comedy. Often compared by critics to Juno and Sixteen Candles, 16 To Life follows Kate, played by Hallee Hirsh (ER, You’ve Got Mail), a small town girl whose angst about her sexual inexperience fuels a comic quest for love and understanding on a birthday to end all birthdays—Kate’s turning Sweet 16 and she’s never been kissed.

My primary responsibility on this film was to devise and coordinate a theatrical distribution and marketing strategy for the film. With most of the movie industry’s major independent distributors going bankrupt or closing in the past two years, the independent film industry’s climate was not well suited to release a small indy film like 16 To Life. Despite the adversity, led by the film’s six ‘Best Feature’ awards won during a year on the film festival circuit, 16 To Life is now slated to have a limited theatrical release in 14 markets in the Midwestern US and California in the fall of 2010, including deals struck with Rave Motion Pictures and AMC Theaters, as well as a limited release in Canada, Europe and The Middle East.

A few samples from a collection of portraits called 50 Places/50 Faces, images of people whom I’ve met in my travels. Each portrait also gives the viewer a glimpse in some way into the subject’s “place.” I am presently working to grow this collection and build it into an installation and book.

Fijian Eye Project (social entrep)

In 2009, I spent a month living on the small island of Taveuni, Fiji working alongside social entrepreneur Geoffrey Amos and his team, whose health, education, and social projects are changing thousands of lives on some of the most remote islands of this isolated South Pacific country.

I was there to observe his annual eye project, that works to bring vision to some of the country’s poorest villagers, most of whom would never have access to, let alone be able to afford, such life changing procedures. Beyond building a world-class eye clinic in the middle of the tropics, the project brings surgeons and ophthalmologist to the islands to check people’s vision, prescribe glasses and when necessary perform cataract and pterygium surgeries at no cost to the patients. Beyond studying the operation and participating in everyday Fijian life, I spent time photographing participants and designed a booklet to assist in sharing the project’s story with potential supporters and donors.

Hook Ya Crook (feature film)

I worked in Hyderabad, India in 2009 alongside film sports action director/coordinator Rob Miller (Miracle) and his US-based company Reel Sports on the upcoming Bollywood sports-comedy Hook Ya Crook. (An interesting aside: Rob gained notoriety in India for his work with the field hockey action featured in Chak De India, which became the critically acclaimed Bollywood super-hit of 2007, with India’s biggest star Shahrukh Khan; so, Bollywood keeps inviting him back.)

Hook Ya Crook has a similar formula: India’s biggest model-turned-actor John Abraham and famed comedy director David Dhawan team-up on this prison sports comedy, a sort of Bollywood remake of The Longest Yard.

Holy Cow Around The World (photography)

A cow, a camera and a 50,000 mile trip around-the-world.. A collection of photos of a stuffed cow as he travels around-the-world. The project was started as a gimmick nearly a decade ago but has since taken on a life of its own. Drawing thousands of views on the internet, the photo collection was hosted for its first gallery installation at the Heyri Art Village in Seoul, Korea in 2009. The collection continues to grow as the cow continues to travel. You can see nearly the entire collection of cow photos on Flickr.
