If you're like me, a undershirt is as much of a protective layer as it is a second shirt. If I didn't wear an undershirt, my dress shirts would be ruined in a matter of weeks, my bank account wouldn't like that at all.

I have a few crew neck, white undershirts, but when I plan to go tieless with my collared shirts, I always wear a v-neck tee. The Air Force required us to wear V-necks when we wore our dress blues without a tie, and there was something cleaner about the look.

If you plan to go wear couple buttons undone with your polo or dress shirt, get a v-neck tee to wear underneath. For some reason the collar of a crew neck shirt draws so much attention to that area, it breaks up your outfit in a bad way. The V-neck gets rid of that entirely so all you see is a bit of chest and the shirt you intended to be visible to the public.

A V-neck does open up a bit more chest hair to be visible, and how much you want popping out; well that's a totally separate conversation.

I like running into people from my part of Virginia when I'm out on fashion adventures. When I run into people I knew in high school, Im reminded how great and small the world can be. Charleston Fashion Week emerging designer competition finalist Katherine Barron and I went to rival high schools, had the same group of friends, and even hung out a number of times. The funny part of all this? She doesn't remember any of it. I'll keep any blackmail photos to myself Katherine.

Aside of that, it's great to see other people from where I grew up striving for big fashion dreams with the talent to back it up. Here's a few shots from her currently collection, don't be fooled by its simplicity, it's all about the details.

2013 Virginia Tech Fashion Show... Best in Show

Last Thursday was a lot of fun. I brought a guest, so my opinionated inner thoughts had a listening ear this time, as well as a second pair of eyes to point out things I normally wouldn't catch. As always with Student designers, I tend to look for good fabric choices, clean finishing, shape and fit versus a collection of wow pieces.

I felt like I saw a lot of pieces that I would call "Friday night out on the town for the post-grad aged (so not too inappropriate in the hem lines). This is my third year going to the show at Virginia Tech, and I think in general I'd like to see more floor length garments from the designers since the shows are always dress heavy, but all and all I was again very impressed with the work by the designers.

So in no particular order, here are my top picks.

Any garment with stripes is tricky, the brain can process uneven and unconnected lines very quickly without the need of a reference point (measuring tape, or a bubble level). The angled vertical stripes gave a nice cinching effect in the waistline and horizontal stripes on top finished creating the "hourglass" figure of this mini. The sheer fabric at the top of the dress was a nice touch, giving just enough of an illusion that the dress could be strapless, but not really. You'll notice in the photos I picked, the pearl neckline was a accruing theme all night. (design by Amelia & Michelle)

This dress was definitely "fierce" which I think was the theme of the night. I liked the contrast in fabrics, matte black, black leather, and that taupe with black polka dots were a great combo. The horizontal layering of leather on the side of the skirt added a lot of interest, and the darting in the bust kept this dress from looking flat and added quite a bit of "sexy" to the design. I think you could go with or without the leather collar, I'm curious how much that would tame this dress. (design by Kelsy Dominick)

This was probably the simplest out of the three dresses I picked for best in show, however I liked the fabric for being simple and chic. I think what I liked the most, with white cotton/linen type material, I could see the stitch work easily. All the lines were super clean, great tapers and curve gave this pearl neck, A-line dress such a clean feminine feel. (Now where can I buy this dress is the question.)

For the most part, this is really just a big ass shirt. A super bright, colorful and fun, big ass shirt. I feel like you can't just roll into the fabric shop and find tulle pre-dyed in rad colors, so some work was to be had (I hope). I do feel the designer could have spent a bit more time cleaning up the layers at the bottom, but I know tulle can be a pain in to work with. Even if they cheated and found this tulle "pre-made in awesome colors," the skirt is too cute. (Another garment I want to buy - design by Kris Kern)

Sorry for the random timed posts, still getting back into things posts Flu-mageddon.

Here is my favorite single look from Radford Universities spring fashion show last weekend.

I don't recall the student designers name, but I liked it for its simple color, great shape, great finishing, the fabric wasn't trying to hard to be fake lux, and the peplum silhouette is super cute and is really big right now. So its very much on trend. I didn't get the best of shots, but still wanted to share.

Radford Univseristy Spring Fashion Show 2013 - "My Pick"

Although I shouldn't have left the house due to the world's worst cold, I mustered up about 2 hours worth of energy to make the Radford University's fashion department, spring fashion show. I missed last year's show so it was great to be able to attend it again this year. I'll post a few more images from the show later, but here is my top senior collection from Saturday by Bradi Berry.

When I'm looking at designs by students, I'm subjective in a different way compared to when I watch other collections. Their budget, support, and resources are just at very different levels. I don't expect a college student to spend part of the college loans on super lux fabric just yet.

Simply put, I want to see well thought out, well finished, well fitting designs. Brandi wasn't nominated by the panel for one of the design awards, from what I could figure out on my own without explanation, they have set themes for the students; resort wear, day wear, formal, etc.. and these looks may not fit in as well. Makes sense since they are teaching students how to build clothing more than how to be the next, creative fashion mastermind power house. Nonetheless, her collection featured some nice denim, natural, wool based fabrics in neutral tones, which to me were a great choice. They hide any obvious signs of lower grade fabrics versus going for polys, to get that more glam, lux look of the cheap.

The crazy candy cane spandex thing was a bit Dr. Seuss? but overall it had the best finishing for so many pressed lines, and looked girly is a runway kind of way.

If you visit daily, you probably noticed I haven't posted anything since last week. Well, I've been bed ridden due to the flu. I have a bit more energy today, just enough to do a bit of office work but don't expect to be back in full swing till next Monday.
