X-Drone Nano will make a great Christmas gift.

I bought X-Drone Nano as a gift for my nephew, but of course I had to play with it first. It takes a bit to get comfortable with the controls and to get the drone to go where you want it to, but once you do...look out! The drone is about the size of the palm of my hand and very light weight. I was really surprised at how quickly this thing moves! We've had a blast playing with and, but I will probably have to buy my nephew another one since I'm having so much fun with this one. I love flying it indoor and outdoors, but watch out if you take it outdoors. You do not want to be in any type of wind, or you may lose the drone. The X-Drone Nano is great for older kids and teenagers, and adults alike. My nephew, who is 11, is going to love this thing!

When I took it out of the box I charged it up, per the instructions. The charge time is pretty quick and it was ready to play with in no time. I will warn you that you only get about 5 minutes of flying time before the drone has to be recharged. This is a little disappointing to me, as I was just getting the hang of it the first time the battery ran down. The drone also comes with extra propeller blades, which is good, because you can easily break these if you bang into something to hard.

The drone gets a really good range. I am a terrible judge of distance, but the drone goes a long way before it loses connection with the remote. The remote is very easy to use and small enough that it is comfortable in your hands. The drone has three speeds, allowing you to use a slower speed when flying indoors and in smaller spaces. It also does 360 degree flips with the touch of a button.

This has really been a lot of fun for us to play with and I know my nephew is going to love it. I'm very happy that I was able to get this at a discount and share my honest and unbiased review.

I Scream! You Scream! We All Scream for Ice Cream!

July is National Ice Cream Month!

Since July is National Ice Cream Month, I thought it might be nice to post some information on ice cream and to share some of my favorite ice cream treat recipes. I've loved ice cream since I was a child. My father was a huge ice cream lover too, and it wasn't uncommon on most evenings for our family to enjoy a delicious bowl of ice cream before settling in the for the night. As an adult, with children of my own, I sometimes wonder why he thought it was a good idea to feed us a bowl of sugary goodness just before putting us to bed.

Before we get to the good stuff, a little history lesson. Feel free to skip down to the good stuff if this bores you.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by over 90 percent of the nation's population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

The International Ice Cream Association (IICA) encourages retailers and consumers to celebrate July as National Ice Cream Month. In 2015, National Ice Cream Day will be Sunday, July 19.

About 10.3 percent of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, contributing significantly to the economic well-being of the nation's dairy industry.

Founded in 1900, IICA is the trade association for manufacturers and distributors of ice cream and other frozen dessert products. The association's activities range from legislative and regulatory advocacy to market research, education and training. Its 60 member companies manufacture and distribute an estimated 85 percent of the ice cream and frozen dessert products consumed in the United States. IICA is a constituent organization of IDFA.

Okay, enough of the history lesson. Time for some great ice cream treat ideas that is sure to bring a smile to your face.

This recipe for S'mores Ice Cream Treats always is a big hit at my house. It's the perfect treat for slumber parties, or just hanging out with the family. The best part? it's so easy!

S'more Ice Cream Treats

Prep time: 30 minutesCook time: 26 minutes

Total time: 56 minutes
Ingredients

9 honey grahams crackers, broken crosswise in half (18 squares)
1 cup Kraft hot fudge microwavable sundae topping, divided
2 cups mini marshmallows (Or you can cheat and use a jar of marshmallow cream)
2 cups chocolate ice cream softened

Preparations

Place 9 of the graham squares evenly in the bottom of foil lined 9 inch square pan. cover with 1/2 cup of the fudge topping; spread topping evenly over graham squares. sprinkle evenly with marshmallows Cover with layers of ice cream and remaining 1/2 cup fudge topping; top with remaining 9 graham squares to form sandwiches, cover. Freeze several hours to overnight. Let stand at room temp for 10 min before cutting into 9 squares to serve. Store leftovers in freezer
(Makes 9 servings)

The next treat that is sure to make your taste buds water. Let me present:

Peanut Butter Banana Ice Cream

Serves: 2

INGREDIENTS

3 large, ripe bananas

3 tablespoons natural peanut butter

¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

A super teeny-tiny dash of cinnamon

Sea salt to taste

Roasted peanuts for topping

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cut the bananas into small chunks and freeze until solid, at least 1-2 hours. Transfer the bananas to a very strong blender and blend until smooth and creamy. This will take a few minutes and may require periodic pauses and adjustments. It's very loud and intense since the bananas are frozen, similar to adding ice cubes to a blender. Within a few minutes, you should be seeing a thick, creamy ice-creamy mixture in the blender.

Add the peanut butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sea salt, and anything else you might like in there. Pulse the blender quickly to stir the ingredients all together and when everything is mixed, serve immediately. Top with additional peanut butter and crushed roasted peanuts.

Who loves cookie dough? I know I do. If you do too, this next one will be a hit with you! I found it on the Pillsbury website, and we absolutely love it!

Cookie Dough Ice Cream Desert

Serves 4

Ingredients:

1 container (1/2 gallon) cookie dough ice cream
2 cups Cookie Crisp cereal
2/3 cup hot fudge topping

Heat oven to 350°F. Line 13x9-inch pan with heavy-duty foil, extending foil over sides of pan. In pan, break up cookie dough. With floured fingers, press dough evenly in bottom of pan to form crust.

Bake 15 to 18 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely, about 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, remove ice cream from freezer; place in refrigerator to soften.

Spread softened ice cream evenly over cooled crust. Top evenly with cereal; press lightly into ice cream. Place hot fudge topping in small resealable food-storage plastic bag; partially seal bag. Cut small hole in bottom corner of bag. Squeeze bag to drizzle topping over dessert. Freeze at least 1 hour or until firm before serving. Use foil to lift dessert from pan. Cut into squares.

This should give you some great treats to try out this month. Of course, there are always the old standbys like hot fudge sundaes and milkshakes. If you have an ice cream maker, I encourage you to spend some time with family making some homemade ice cream. Give you kid an experience to remember.

Oil Pulling: A Review of Sesame Oil (50% off Coupon)

Oil Pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic remedy for oral health and detoxification. Product Review: Sublime Beauty's Dry Skin Brush

Until now, I had never tried skin brushing. I have to say I wasn't sure how true the hype was, or if it really did all that it claimed for your skin. I am a true believer now. This is a great skin brush by Sublime Beauty. It does an amazing job exfoliating my skin and removing all those dead skin cells. My skin is glowing now, and looks amazing. The brush feels great and invigorates my skin. Some of the rough patches that I've been dealing with due to dry skin are much softer now that all the dead skin has been removed. I had read in the past that skin brushing is a great way to increase circulation in your skin and get that healthy glow that I've seen on so many other women. I wanted that glow, and now I have it. The brush is made of all natural bristles and has a nice wooden handle/base. The attached strap makes it easy to use on all parts of my body that need exfoliating. It comes in a nice pouch that makes it suitable for taking with me when I travel. The brush is small, but an integral part of my daily routine now. This small brush has done wonders for my skin and I can't imagine I'll ever not use a skin brush again.
The simple habit of skin brushing reduces cellulite, detoxifies for beautiful skin and many other health and beauty benefits! I like to use this skin brush in the morning before I shower. It loosens the dead skin cells and I can easily wash them away in the shower. You need to brush firmly, but not hard enough to break the skin. At first it seemed a bit strange and uncomfortable, but now I love the feel of the brush on my skin.

This is my skin brush routine:

Get naked and stand in a bathtub or tiled surface to catch the falling skin. (It's a bit gross, I know.)

Begin brushing by starting at your feet and moving in long sweeping motions toward your heart. Always brush toward your heart.

Brush several times in each area, overlapping as you go.

Take care as you brush over more sensitive areas, like breasts. Your skin will become less sensitive the more you dry brush.

Once you've brushed your entire body, jump in the shower. (I like to alternate between the hottest water temperature I can tolerate and the coldest. This stimulates blood circulation, bringing more blood to the top layers of the skin.)

After getting out of the shower, pat dry skin and apply a natural fruit oil like rose hip or coconut oil.

Continue to dry brush your entire body every day. Twice a day is recommended for best results. Remember to clean your brush with soap and water once a week. Leave to dry in a clean, sunny spot to avoid any mildew accumulation on your brush.

If you follow this routine your skin will look amazing in no time. It took about two weeks for me to realize the full effect of skin brushing, but I could tell almost immediately that the exfoliating process was working to create great changes in my skin. I love body scrubs. I love the way they make my skin feel and look. I may be weird, but I also like they way it feels while using them. Maybe it's knowing that I'm scrubbing away all those dead skin cells, and impurities. Maybe it's that I feel like I'm getting a spa treatment at home. I especially like to pay special attention to areas that tend to get dry, rough patches, like my elbows and knees. The scrub rinses away without leaving any type of oily or filmy residue. Pat your skin dry, and feel how soft your skin is. In my opinion this is the perfect scrub.

Product Review: Omega 3 Fish Oil

My doctor recommended that I start taking an Omega 3 supplement last year. I've been taking Omega 3 fish oil supplements for a little over a year now. After trying several different supplement brands I can honestly say they are not all the same. That's one of the reasons I was glad to get to try this one from Quality Encapsulations. I love it when a company takes action and helps out those who really need it. This is just one reason I love this company!

I had never heard of this product before getting the opportunity to try, and I admit, I really didn't do much research about it either. That's unusual for me, as I like to know about the products I'm receiving before I get them. To be honest, when I received the product, I was expecting some type of insert to be put in my shoes, but what I received was a spray. That was a pleasant surprise, as I wear custom orthotics in my shoes and I cannot always make odor inserts work comfortably. The next thing I noticed is that the bottle is a nice size. The odor eliminator comes in a 3 oz. bottle that gives you about 500 sprays per bottle. That's a lot of odor elimination!

To see if this worked, I decided to try it on my workout shoes. They are they "stinkiest" ones I own! I can attest to the fact that they really do stink! I put two sprays in each shoe and let them sit.. I noticed a difference in the odor emitting from the shoes right away. This spray doesn't use perfume or other chemicals to cover up the odor. It actually does eliminate it. It's like using Febreeze specifically designed for shoe odor, so it works even better!

Whenever possible, I prefer to use products that are organic or all natural. The ingredients are at least 99% naturally derived. That means I don't have to worry about using this product on my children's shoes. I also don't have to worry if one of the dogs decides to grab a shoe to chew on it, at least not that a chemical will hurt them. I might get a bit angry if a dog chews on my favorite workout shoes!

I'm always looking for cute and high quality baby products. If someone in my family isn't having a baby, it seems someone I know is. These soft and beautiful infant hats by Brooklyn Bamboo are perfect. I decided to get these hats to add to a baby shower gift basket for a friend of mine. I have to say that I absolutely love these! They are just what any newborn needs to keep their head covered and warm. Not only are they adorable, they are very well made. They are great for boys or girls! Another plus!

Let me start here by saying the these hats are so cute! I can't get over how adorable her little guy looks with these hats on. He was born a few days ago, and my friend opted to bring him home from the hospital in the little teddy bear hat. The pictures she posted of him in Facebook were perfect! Los Angeles Women's Fold-over Waist Printed La Palazzo Pants

I've been wanting to get myself a pair of Palazzo pants for awhile. I've been worried about how they would look on me, but my friends assured me they would be flattering on me. So, after much consideration, I bit the bullet and gave them a try.

Wow! These pants are awesome! I absolutely love the way they look! I was worried that the full legs would not be flattering on me, but I was wrong. I really like the way the look on me, and I rarely say that. These Los Angeles Women's Fold-over Waist Printed La Palazzo Pants are perfect for me!

The pants have a beautiful print, and the colors are perfect. I opted for a more toned down pair color-wise, but there are a lot of patterns and colors to choose from. The fold over waist is comfortable and gives me the option of wearing them two ways, either high waisted, or low on my hips..

The material is nice and soft. They are made of 92% Polyester 8% Spandex. This means that the pants are light and the material flows well. They are also cool to wear. The pants feel great on. They are comfortable enough that I could wear them around the house all day.

The pants are very well made. I checked out the stitching very carefully, and found it all even and well done. The pants come un-hemmed, but unless that really bothers you there is no need to hem them. The material will not fray. I prefer to keep my pair long so I can wear them with heels, but I'm considering getting another pair so that I can hem them and wear flats with them. These are great for a casual day or can be dressed up for a night on the town. They launder very well too! The came out of the dryer looking great!

Over the past few years I've noticed the tiny lines around my eyes becoming more prominent. I received the CJS Dash Mate for review and I have to say it's very handy. I have used other cell phone holders similar to this, but this is one of the best I've used. It makes traveling so much easier. I personally use it to keep my cell phone visible so I can use my GPS features on my phone. The phone is easily in view and just where I need it.

Best Room Fragrance I've Tried

Our home seems to get a plethora of different aromas throughout time, and not all of them are pleasant, thanks mainly to my husband. What makes it even worse? The air return for our furnace and a/c is right outside the hall bathroom, That means that any time there is a foul odor coming from the bathroom gets pushed through our entire home if the air kick on. It's not a good situation. I now have a remedy for that, thanks to Aroma Trees Premium Home and Bathroom Fragrance Spray.

This particular one smells amazing! It's not too strong, or
overwhelming. It smells amazing. A quick spray in the bathroom or any other room in the house and the room smells great! Innovative Dish Washing Net Cloths

I've used similar products like these dish washing net cloths with mixed reviews. The types I've tried in the past did an okay job, but didn't hold up well, or didn't do a great job at cleaning my dishes. These scrubbers by Top Clean are better than any I've tried in the past. They do a great job cleaning even the most stubborn cooked on mess from my pans, without fear of scratching my expensive Teflon pans.

The scubbers are different. Unlike others I've tried, these are actually more like dish cloths. There is not sponge or anything like that. You can fold them up or unfold them. Whatever works for you. They are very lightweight, and dry very quickly. I just hang it over the kitchen faucet and it's dry within minutes. No more musty, wet smelling dish cloths or sponges. They seem to be very durable. I've used them consistently since I receive them and I haven't noticed any wear yet. I'm able to use them to scrub my dishes, pots and pans, and with just a little elbow grease I can remove all that baked on food residue. They are very easy on my pans. No scratches at all!

I like that this rinses clean, leaving no food residue stuck in the cloth. The cloths can be throw in the washing machine, or the dishwasher for cleaning. I thought the price was a little high for a 2-pack, but if they last as long as I expect them to, they are definitely worth the investment. This bath mat, offered by MJ's Premium Store on Amazon, is different from any bath mat I've ever used before. In the past I've always used mats that were made of terry cloth, or were more like a shag rug. I really like this mat, and the way it looks and feels. I think it is nice enough to be used in other areas around my house.

It is made of memory foam, and it has a non-slip grip. I have no fear of it sliding as I step out of the tub. I've actually had that happen in the past and almost fell because of it. Besides being safe, this mat is attractive, and it feels amazing on my bare feet when I step out of the tub. The mat is a really nice size at 17x24 inches, and the memory foam is very soft and has a velvety soft feeling to it. The memory foam bath mat is about 1 inch thick, making it the thickest bath mat I've ever seen or used. You could actually use this in the kitchen in front of the sink, or anywhere you would be standing for long periods of time. The softness and support provided by this mat helps to keep your legs from tiring. It is also very absorbent, so it protects my floor from getting wet or having any water damage.

As I get older I've started to notice that my skin is not as youthful as it once was. This beautiful and stylish iPhone 6 Plus case by blurabbit is the perfect accessory for my iPhone. I'm always on the lookout for good quality, stylish cases, and this one caught my eye. A Great Tunic For Any Woman's Wardrobe

When I saw the pictures of this tunic on Amazon I thought it was lovely! I really like the design of the tunic. I like that the v-neck is not too low. So many tunics I've looked at recently are just too low cut for my taste. I love how the tunic is longer on the backside, also, as it helps to cover up my over-sized rear end. This is a very versatile top that I can wear with so many pieces in my wardrobe. I only wish that it looked as good on me as it does on the model, but then again, I'm not a model. I do like the way it looks on my though, and it has become one of my favorite wardrobe pieces.

I need to mention that this did run small, and that the sleeves were a little tight for my taste. Otherwise, I love the tunic. It is very lightweight, so you can wear it year round, but be aware that you will need to wear a camisole underneath it because the fabric is thin. As a warm natured individual, I like the thin fabric. It is very breathable and helps to keep me cool.

This top can be worn with jeans, slacks or leggings. The tunic is styled more to be a casual top, but with the right slacks and accessories I can see this being a dressier top. I can tell you that the tunic is very comfortable, and launders very well. I personally washed it in the machine in cold water, and dried it on low heat. I didn't want to take a chance of shrinking it, as it already runs a little small. This is a beautiful top that I feel comfortable wearing to work or to dinner. I recently wore it to watch my little one play soccer, and found it was comfortable and looked good with my leggings.

I Wish I Hadn't Missed Out!

I'm feeling a bit melancholy tonight. I've been working on planning a reunion for my family. I'm not sure why they think I'm the best person to do this, but here I sit, planning a long awaited family reunion for my family in September. Thinking of planning this has made me think of my childhood.

When I was six, my father lost his job. He managed a trucking company, and one day he went to work and found that he no longer had a job. I know exactly how this feels. He looked for a job, but wasn't able to find anything, or maybe my parents were just ready for a change. I'm not sure, since I was so young, and my parents are no longer here for me to ask.

After much deliberation, and long talks, I'm sure, they decided to move us to Miami, Florida to open a clothing store. I'm sure this was scary for them, and things were not always easy for us financially growing up, but I loved Florida. What kid wouldn't love being able to go to the beach all the time?

When the store failed, we moved to Reno, Nevada where my dad had taken a good job. We stayed there for another five years before my parents divorced and we moved back to Indiana. By this time my mother was sick and wanted us to be close to family. She died about a year and a half later and my brother and I went to Texas, where my father was now living. From there we went to Georgia, until my father's death a few years later. My brother and I came back home at this point, as there was no reason for us to stay in Georgia. We were only there because of our dad. I was 21 years old at this point, and my little brother was 18.

So how has this made me think of my childhood? Well, in planning this reunion, it makes me realize just how much I missed out on. Most people have friends that they have had since childhood. I can barely remember the names of a handful of my friends. I don't have those lifelong connections that other do, and I'm envious of those people.

In talking with family, preparing for this reunion, it has also brought to my attention all the things I missed out on by not being raised around all my aunts, uncles and cousins. For the most part, they all have this connection that I don't have. I didn't get to spend every Sunday at grandma's eating and spending time with family. I just realized yesterday that I didn't know my grandmother had a meal schedule. A different meal for each day of the week, and that each week, this menu was basically the same.

I'm jealous that I didn't get to grow up around my cousins. They know all these things about each other that I don't know. They've had all the great conversations that I wasn't a part of. It doesn't feel quite fair. But, at the same time, I've had experiences and socialized with so many different types of people. These are experiences that I would never have had if we hadn't moved all over the country. I learned so many things, and experienced things that my cousins didn't. So I guess, that wasn't fair to them. I just wish there had been more balance.

Even though we spent several of our summers visiting our grandparents and spending time with family, now it doesn't feel like it was enough. I have great memories of those summers. I loved spending time with both sets of my grandparents, and spending time with my aunts, uncles, and cousins. I guess I just wish I could have spent more time with them all, and built the kinds of relationships that they all have. I really hope that they aren't taking those relationships for granted. I would give anything to have that closeness they all share. These relationships are important, and while I have a couple of people in my family I've built what I think are close relationships, I realize that these relationships will never be what they would have been if I had grown up here, where my family is.

One other thing that I've come to realize...they didn't get to know my parents the way they should have either. My cousins never got to know just how wonderful and strong my mother was, or how my dad could be a lot of fun if the stars and planets aligned just right. How many things did they miss know about my parents? How many things do they not know about my brother, or about me? Probably just as many as I don't know about them. Maybe there is still time to change that.

I See A Glimmer Of Light!

Have you ever come to a place in your life when you know you have to make a change? You're at a crossroads and you can continue on the path you're on, or you can change direction. What do you do? Do you look at where you are and where you've been and decide you are happy with your life as it is? Or, do you look back and think maybe you need to mix it up a bit? Maybe you need a career change. Maybe you need a new view out of the kitchen window. Maybe you just need to decide to do something. Anything.

Yesterday I was writing about depression, and how I feel like I'm in a dark place, but today,..today is different. Today is a good day. Today I can look out the window and see the sunlight. Today, there is a light at the end of my tunnel. It may be shining dimly, but it's shining. So where does this leave me?

Starting in two weeks I will be employed again. It's not my dream job, but it's a foot in the door. The pay is a lot less than what I was making before, but that's okay. Nine months of unemployment has made me realize that I don't need the high paying job that I had in the past. I just need to pay the bills. This new job will be less stressful for me. When I clock out, I'll be done. No listening for those calls in the middle of the night. No worrying that I may not meet that project deadline, or that my code will fail on "live" day. I'm not saying my new job won't have stressful moments, but now all that stops when I clock out. In some ways I'm disappointed about not having that high paying job and the prestige that came with it, but in other ways I'm excited. It's time to try something new. Who knows. Maybe this will lead me to something great!

I've been thinking about what to do in my spare time. I have a lot of that. Maybe if I had come to this day sooner I wouldn't have wasted the last nine months. I'm thinking about writing. Not just a short story or a blog post, but a book. I have a couple of ideas. I'm not sure if they are great ideas, but maybe I can turn them into something and get published.

Maybe I should pursue my photography. I love taking pictures. I love when people look at them and smile. I like seeing beauty in ordinary things, or capturing a person's soul in the pictures I take. I haven't been able to do this lately because of the darkness, but dawn is starting to break. I want to see beauty again.

Maybe this new job is just that. A job. Maybe I'll have a new career in writing or photography. I can be hopeful, at least today, because the darkness is lifting and the sun is starting to shine. I can see a sliver of sunlight peaking through the blinds of my bedroom. Just enough to light a small portion of my darkness, but some light none the less. Let's hope tomorrow I can open the blinds and feel the warmth of the sun.

I love music. I listen to music nearly every day, and I listen to every genre of music out there. I love it all. I can give credit for my love of music to my mother. She taught me to appreciate all types of music. Everything from classical to rap, easy listening to heavy metal, pop to Christian rock. There is some type of music to fit every mood that I feel, and certain songs to commemorate certain events in my life. When the opportunity arose for me to test this speaker I was thrilled. I have used several of these different Bluetooth speakers over the past couple of years. Some were decent, and some are exceptional. This is one of the exceptional versions.

The first thing that I noticed when I received this speaker and removed it from the box is just how light it is. I was worried that by being so light it would not be a high quality speaker, but I don't have that worry anymore. The speaker is rechargable, so I can take it with me wherever I decide to go. It comes with a zippered carrying pouch that allows you store the speaker or attach it to a backpack with the included carabiner and carry your music on the go. This is a truly portable speaker.

I was able to pair my iPhone to the speaker in about 60 seconds. I can also pair it with my laptop as well, for when I'm at home. The Bluetooth capabilites enable me to search, skip, and replay songs from my iPhone without having to touch the speaker. There are also functional buttons on the speaker so you can change songs, increase volume, etc., right from the speaker if my phone is laying across the room. There is also about a thirty foot range, so I can carry my phone around the house and it still be connected to the speaker.

What has impressed me the most with this speaker is the sound quality. It really is amazing that a speaker the size of this one can sounds so great. The bass is solid, and doesn't cause any of the reverberation that some speakers have. There is none of that annoying buzzing that I've heard in some speakers. The treble range on the track sounds great too. You don't hear any of those "tinny" high notes that you have heard on some speakers. You get a rich, full sound from this speaker. Every note is clear.

I was amazed at the how long this speaker's battery lasts. I can listen to music for well over 8 hours before I have to charge it. How amazing is that? This speaker also have a built in microphone so I can use it as a speaker phone as well. I've tested the microphone and the person on the other end of the line was able to hear me clearly and I was able to hear and speak to them without any problems.

I have tried to test every facet of this speaker and I've not been able to find anything that I dislike about this speaker, or that need improvement. This is, by far, my favorite Bluetooth wireless speaker to date, for speakers in this price range. I am so happy that I was able to receive this speaker for testing purposes and to share my honest opinion.

When Will I See the Light At the End of My Tunnel?

I've been reading a lot about depression lately, mainly because I am suffering through it right now. I've never been one to stay depressed for long periods of time. There have been times in my life when I've gotten "down" for a little while, but I was always able to work through it.

When I was seventeen my mother passed away from breast cancer. She was only 38, and I was devastated. The first couple of weeks were horrible, but slowly I was able to get back to my normal life. I was able to start enjoying my life and it didn't take me months to do it. Granted, it didn't happen all at once, but it did start to happen over time.

The same thing happened when my father passed away a few years later, and at various other times over the years. The longest the bouts of depression ever lasted were a few weeks...until now.

For about four months now I've been fighting this urge to lay in my bed with the covers over my head and sleep all day. I fight this urge every day. Most days, the urge wins. I don't sleep at night, but can sleep all day, meaning I don't have to deal with people. As embarrassed as I am to admit it, there have been days where to urge to drink myself into oblivion has been strong, but I've resisted. I don't want to be that person.

I don't want to be this person. I hate this person! How did I end up here? This isn't me. This isn't how I want to live my life, but I don't know how to change it. I'm hoping that by writing about this I can motivate myself to get better. Maybe I can motivate someone else to get better. I know it has to get better, right?

I think this all started last July, although the real depression didn't set in until around Christmas. I was laid off of my job of more than fifteen years, thanks to Healthcare Reform and the reimbursement cuts that were made because of it. I worked in a hospital for over fifteen years. I wasn't a nurse, or anyone that took care of patients, but what I did mattered. I loved what I did, even when I didn't always like doing it with my coworkers, or at my organization, but I LOVE my career. Not only do I love it, I'm good at it. I had built a solid reputation and was proud of the work I did. It hit my like a ton of bricks, but after a couple weeks I was able to get back on my feet. It took me three solid days of drinking, (not my proudest moments), and my family, but the darkness lifted. Even through all that I never felt like this.

On those few days that I feel like getting out I feel better, but those days are few and far between. I don't understand why I can't will myself to feel better. I'm taking anti-depressants, but obviously they aren't working. I wasn't the only person that was laid off that day. I have several friends that went through the same thing and they have all picked up the pieces of their lives and moved on. So why can't I?

The things you hear people say about you when you are depressed make things even worse. I'm not lazy. I'm not anti-social. I realize it seems that way, but it's not true. "If she'd just get up and do something she'd feel better." That may be true, but no one can understand how hard it is to make yourself do that when you suffering from depression. Everyone thinks you should just be able to get up and move on. It's not that simple. As much as I want to feel normal again, this has become my normal, and it feels terrible. Some days I wonder if I will ever feel like my old self again.

Depression is a tunnel of darkness. The more you try to fight it, the tighter it holds on. I've used this post as a sort of diary entry, but the main thing that I want everyone to know is that those of us suffering from severe depression need understanding and support. We don't want to feel like this, but we can't will ourselves back to normal. We need help. From our family, our friends, and sometimes medical professionals. Don't judge too quickly, because it could be you at some point in your life. If you've never suffered through this, it's hard for you to understand that we want to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This isn't living. This isn't how we want to spend our days. We want to feel good again. Help us to do that. Encourage us to get up and do things, but don't get down on us when we just can't make ourselves do it. On those rare occasions when we do feel like doing something, be supportive. Most of all, know that we want to get better and that we haven't given up...yet.
