I Hate These Yuppy Names For Kids

Well I don't have time to report on world news all the time so I've gone back to basics today: What pisses me off...

I hate all these new yuppy and urban names that are popping up - either its naming your kid a verb or something, or it's naming your kid a normal name, but spelled by someone with dyslexia!

For instance: Archer is not a name, it's a medieval occupation! Why not name your son Swordsman? or Machine-gunner?

Or how about naming your kid after the city Brooklyn - which is already a misspelling of a Dutch word - but spelling it any which way you please! Aren't one of the things parents are supposed to teach their kid is spelling?

As bad as I remember as a kid was if you were a "stacy with a 'y' or 'i' or an 'ey'. Now it's like "hey my name is George, spelled with a q..."

The best part is that naming kids is cyclical, so in ten years there will be another crazy fad or names will go back to normal. Then this generation of kids named after ingredients found on a box of cereal or have names that don't pass spell-check, will be all the more funny.

Wait till they are old enough to realize that their parents were retarded..

Bear's Last Dance: RIP Owsley Stanley

Another giant has fallen, The Bear is gone. Mr. Stanley and I had a brief but very interesting correspondence through email a few years back. He let me in on his beliefs on human nutrition (he only ate animal products - take that hippies!), and especially his views on global warming - which he believed is just the short term melting of the ice caps on the way to the next ice age. Sorry Bear if I didn't get it right yet again...

No Sympathy For Dead Missionaries

Plain and simple: You got the money to sail around the world for years in a million dollar yacht passing out bibles - then I shed no tears when fate bites you in the ass. I hate the concept of missionary work - too much of the "white man's burden" stigma attached. Besides, what kind of ego must you have to think that it was because of YOU alone that people are finding God? Fuck them.

They were well aware of what happens in that part of the world - and yet were heading for Djibouti anyway. So why should we help them? The right wing radio nitwits are saying we should have come down and killed off the pirates and saved them. I don't like piracy but why do these guys want to save rich bible thumpers but screw Americans without health care? Funny how they would leave me to die if I was sick without coverage.

In the end I feel that any missionary that goes into hostile territory is a wanna-be martyr. So let them act out their version of Christians in the Colosseum and be done with them. Why try to save them when they believed they were already saved?

Middle East Revolt Express: Next Stop Morocco

Ahhh Morocco, it has been too long...

Every time I look at that Berber rug on my floor I remember what I went through to get it. I will also never forget the filth and poverty that was in juxtaposition to the new fancy resorts that were being built on the highway to Tetouan. I remember a border in which the Spanish side of Cueta was clean and the Moroccan side was strewn with trash. I recall what looked a mountain of dirty diapers piled up on the side of the road and continuing, like a jetty out to the beach below. Maybe it is time for Moroccans to start taking control of their own destiny and taking pride in what could be a very beautiful country.

Morocco is just the latest in the wave of revolt in the Middle East and although it is the only Arab state I have visited, I'm sure the poverty and filth are the same or worse in the other revolting nations. It is time to get out and make a change...a change from the inside for once. I know that scares the shit out of Western policy makers, but hey, that's the reality of democracy.

Is this similar to what happened in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union from 1988-92? Well in a way I think it is, in that the Western nations will try to claim this as a victory for democracy - yet in reality it is the people that are causing the greatest change.

Now the problem the West faces is will they like what happens next. Military takeovers, Theocracy or the true will of the people? The United States has always supported democracy in the region publicly, but policy says otherwise - with a history of supporting hardliners to keep the peace - from the Shah, to Saddam, to Mubarak and others. I feel that foreign policy makers forget that the common people of the muslim word have a different value system than they do. So if the Egyptian people decide to vote in a majority Muslim Brotherhood government (whatever form that takes and when..who knows), how will the policy makers react?

Obama's Budget: Will It Be Enough?

Probably not - but he's cutting more that I would have thought and that can be a good thing. Republicans want more cuts of course, but notice how the things they want to cut actually hurt the people who usually vote for their party. What about cutting some foreign aid to Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia for starters? And they are always loathe to cut anything in the defence budget - if they do it usually hurts the troops on the ground like no body armor. Meanwhile there are usually billions of dollars in a defence black hole for projects that may never see the light of day.

Regardless, more has to be done - enough of this whining about how your tax dollars are being wasted. Face it, you will always have to pay taxes for things you don't like - this ain't ala carte government here. Cutting spending alone won't solve our problems. Raising taxes for the rich won't solve our problems either. While that seems like common sense to most of us, it's funny how the two parties we have to choose from don't seem to care what we think. They think they know better...

...oh and has any of the 100 Senators or the 400+ Congressmen volunteered to not take a paycheck this term? Seriously, I'm asking.

Due to the continued popularity of my "I hate Dr. Phil" post from 2008, I decided it's time to vent on another snake-oil salesman: TV's Dr. Oz.

I've never seen the show, but I've heard plenty of crap from people I know who watch everyday. Alternative medicine? Homeopathy? Dr. Mercola? WTF! How is this guy on TV spouting quackery. What scares me is it is mostly seniors that watch him and many old-timers think if its on TV it has to be true.

I wrote plenty on the Swine Flu pseudo-pandemic, so I won't go further on the subject of these videos. I certainly don't agree with his take on vaccinations and HIV conspiracies. However the more I see of these videos the more it proves that its all about money and publicity and little to do about health.

Recently I have heard that he advocates homeopathy and supports the well known quack Dr. Mercola. I used to work in health-food stores, at one time I studied homeopathy, used homeopathy and sold homeopathy. The more I looked into it, the more foolish the whole practice is. Vegetarians should be wary of what they may be ingesting - one advertised flu remedy is made with duck liver.

What a duck liver will do to your flu symptoms I have no idea. Then again, it is so diluted that there is probably not a singe molecule of liver in it. What you have just paid for is a bunch of sugar pills. Go ahead, eat the whole container and try to overdose...I dare ya.

Boycotting The Eco-Frauds

Legal Seafoods, a New England institution recently held a dinner to highlight the hypocrisy within fisheries management as well as the bullshit spun by the foodies that toe the line. The powers that be still claim that our local fish stocks, including cod are still too overfished to be caught. This asshole lists Legal as a place to boycott because they are making light of this so-called 'science'.

So while the Obama/Lubchenco plan works it way toward decimating what is left of New England fisheries, these greenheads swallow the tripe without a second thought. Our fisheries are rebuilt - and there are no longer enough boats to even catch what is allowed. Before the Catch-Share system came into place last May, local fishermen were under fishing, not overfishing the once-depleated stocks.

You want to know how short-sighted these eviro-nitwits are? They claim to care about the health of the oceans, yet they tell the public to avoid our sustainably caught local fish (which helps local economies as well), while America imports 80% of its seafood from other countries. Much of this fish comes from areas that are heavily overfished and exploited by factory ships. Why is it ok to eat fish from these places but not fish caught from a small boat from your own country? Just goes to show that environmentalism only extends to their backyard fence.

I'm not impressed with environmentalism...

Politicians Are Not On Your Side

They say what you want to hear to get elected, they do nothing but bicker between themselves during their term and when it comes time to make a change, you have to choose two parties of the usual suspects. I'm done with American politics and this recent shooting in Arizona just shows how the whole den of thieves operates - fighting for the moral and political high ground in the wake of tragedy.

I lean left but I find less and less I have in common with the Democratic party. I tend to be fiscally conservative but I'd never side with the rich assholes of the GOP who continue to fool my working class bretheren into voting them in. So I'm done because the only thing they are trying to do is reshape the country into their own image. Karl Marx may have been wrong...but I don't think he was that far off.

Looks like the hacking community dealt a blow to the Establishment by screwing around with the websites for Visa, MasterCard and Paypal yesterday. All of that was sort of a sign of solidarity for the beseiged Wikileaks, whose leader is now awaiting trial in London.

Who knows what the End Game will be, but it looks like Mr. Assange has a bit of an insurance policy in the form of one last file. Should anything happen to him, a file will be executed which could be a Pandora's box of surprises. What it contains is unknown to most, but I have a feeling whatever happens to Wikileaks and its leader, we will eventually know what the file contains...

Obama and the Bush Tax Cuts: What Just Happened?

I'm not sure if any of this is going to help us in the long run. But it seems to me that none of the policy makers in Washington had the American people at the top of their thoughts. Right or Left, it looks like it's more about moral victories among the squabbling politicians than real change.

Obama referred to all this as a 'game' and he is right. The political spectrum has become so entrenched that it is almost a religious dogma. Most of us Americans are not so extreme in our views - hell even me, a self-proclaimed angry militant leftist, can find myself on the conservative side of an political issue sometimes.

So have we avoided a double-dip recession? In my opinion it has something to do with the fat cats that just got a continuation of their tax break. The recession came on under the Bush tax cuts, so how does continuing these tax cuts help us? If they keep the money in their pockets, like they have been doing this whole time, it does not help the economy.

Wargames & Wikileaks: North Korea Is On An Island

Ahhh Wikileaks, just when the world was getting interesting with the sabre-rattling between the Koreas, you kicked it up a notch! So it now sounds like North Korea's only real ally, China, is ready to see reunification. They see the DPRK as a pain in the ass now that China is the Next Big Thing. This I feel will be China's real attempt to assert itself on more than just the economic stage.

So we shall see how this all plays out, but no matter what happens - war or more 6 party talks, the only real winner I see in this situation is China. Meanwhile the only thing the US can do is posture...because let's be serious...three wars!

I'm Not Voting

Why should I vote when nothing happens when I do? I voted for change a couple of years ago and nothing changed. This time they are telling me to 'vote the bums out' - but who is replacing them? More bums! The more I see the more I realize that all of these politicians, right and left are not on YOUR side they are on their OWN side.

Nothing says that more than the riduculous attack ads that you are forced to watch during the four hours of local evening news. If anyone is swayed one way or another by these piles of mis-quotes and flat out lies, then you know why I have no faith in elections...

...because I have no faith in my fellow Americans.

Think Obama is a socialist? Most Americans don't even really know what that word means. Including most politicians.

Just think: If the politicians spent the time and energy they use on getting elected for actually doing their jobs, we wouldn't have most of our current problems.

I always loved how in old films of past dictators, they are always covered in medals - from the Tsars to Generalisimo Franco, to Curley Howard in some of my favorite 3 Stooges episodes.

So in good totalitarian tradition, Kim Jong Il promotes his youngest son to General. Now when the secretive country finally loses its current nutjob, they have another one to slide right in.

By making him a general, I think the Kim family is trying to stave off a military coup once Kim Jong Il dies. By getting the troops loyal to a family member is one way of keeping the country 'within the family'. Part of me wonders if North Korea would even admit his death until their hand is called by the west.

RIP Bobby Hebb: Music Legend Passes Away

I am proud to say that Bobby Hebb was a friend of mine and saddened when I heard that he recently died. Bobby was one of the nicest and certainly one of the sharpest men I've ever known. I met him as a teenager, he lived above the cafe I worked at and over the years we had some great conversations about music, life, women, all with some the best home-spun charm you've ever heard.

I'll never forget my 21st birthday - Bobby comes bouncing down his stairs picking on a very nice Fender acoustic guitar. He says to me: "Let's hear it" as he hands me the guitar. I play a bit and told him how sweet a guitar it was, and if I could borrow it sometime. Bobby replies: "borrow? man, that's your guitar, happy birthday!"

Bobby...thank you for times I'll never forget!

As the sports world reveals more and more how rampant Performance Enhancing Drugs are, the less I care. If that is what sports have become, then so be it. However what I can't stand is the lying and the holier-than-thou attitude of guys like Lance Armstrong.

I can't stand his whole Live Strong gimmick and especially the wanna-be's who latch on to anything he says. I especially hate all those spandex wearing Lance worshipers who clog my streets on sunny days. What happened to riding your ten speed while wearing cut off jean shorts (jorts)? Why does everyone who rides a bike now has to dress like they are participating in the two-man luge?

I love to see guys like this fall - the ones who hold themselves up as a shining example of humanity but in reality are just assholes like the rest of us. Your days in the sun are numbered yellow-boy!
