Cambridge đã chính thức phát hành phiên bản thứ 3 của bộ từ điển này với những cải tiến rất đáng kể giúp học tiếng Anh hiệu quả hơn. Như thường lệ đi kèm theo sách là 1 CD-ROM chứa toàn bộ nội dung của sách cùng với những tính năng kèm theo rất quý báu và thật sự hữu dụng với người học tiếng Anh. Tên đầy đủ của từ điển là Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (CALD3), dành cho người học đã có trình độ trên trung cấp.

Không giống như phiên bản 2.0, phiên bản 3.0 này không có bảo vệ khắt khe nữa. Tức là nếu không có điều kiện mua được từ điển để có CD, người học có thể download trên mạng về, cài đặt và sử dụng mà thôi, không còn phải lo vấn đề bảo mật hay bẻ khóa gì nữa. Trong quá trình cài đặt, bạn nên chọn cài đặt đầy đủ Full Installation, yêu cầu đĩa cứng còn khoảng 500MB trống. Với lựa chọn này, bạn có thể truy cập đến các hình ảnh minh họa hay các câu ví dụ có phát âm nhanh hơn so với việc cài đặt mặc định vì toàn bộ dữ liệu media đã được chép hết lên đĩa cứng. Và bạn cần phải cài thêm IDM QuickFind (sẽ được hỏi trong quá trình cài đặt) nếu muốn sử dụng tính năng tra từ nhanh trong khi lướt web hoặc đọc văn bản (QUICKFind).

Chương trình có những chức năng chính nổi bật như sau:

Dictionary: là bộ từ điển “xương sống” của CALD3. Những từ mà bạn tìm thấy trong từ điển giấy thì cũng sẽ tìm thấy trong đây với một tốc độ nhanh hơn và tiện lợi hơn. Bạn có thể xem thêm hình minh họa (nếu có), nghe giọng phát âm người thiệt bằng giọng Anh và giọng Mỹ. Nếu có thêm ví dụ thì mục từ sẽ xuất hiện thêm nút Extra Examples. Bấm vào đó để xem thêm ví dụ. Nút Word Building giúp học thêm từ loại như danh từ, tính từ và động từ của từ gốc. Đặc biệt hơn, CALD3 cũng tích hợp SMART Thesaurus giúp tìm từ nhiều từ đồng nghĩa nếu có.

Advanced Search: tìm kiếm nâng cao theo các tiêu chí như từ loại Part of Speech, chủ đề Topic,…

Exercises: hàng ngàn bài tập đủ các dạng giúp người học tự ôn luyện, phần Exam Pratice có trích một số câu hỏi từ những đề thi trước đây của những kỳ thi quốc tế như IELTS, FCE, CAE, CPE và BEC giúp người học có thể làm quen với đề thi thiệt.

Pictures: tập hợp những hình ảnh minh họa giúp người học học tiếng Anh trực quan sinh động hơn, điều này sẽ tạo ra cảm giác hứng thú khi học tiếng Anh cũng như giúp người học nhớ lâu hơn.

QUICKfind: tìm nhanh những từ bằng một cửa sổ nhỏ khi đang lướt web hay đọc văn bản, email (yêu cầu phải cài đặt IDM QuickFind).

SUPERwrite: trợ lý về viết lách. Chức năng này cũng khá thú vị, sẽ giúp bạn kiểm tra về chính tả cũng như văn phạm trong lúc viết văn.

LƯU Ý:

Theo kinh nghiệm của tác giả, thì việc cài đặt chắc chắn ít nhiều sẽ bị ảnh hưởng bởi các chương trình quản lý và diệt vi-rút hiện nay vì việc cài đặt đòi hỏi quyền truy cập cao nhất (Administrator) cũng như chương trình có một số module mà các chương trình chống vi-rút sẽ liệt kê vào danh sách “đặc biệt cần quan tâm”. Vì vậy để cài đặt được suôn sẻ, đối với các bạn không rành nhiều về máy tính thì các bạn hãy tạm thời ngắt kết nối mạng nếu có và tạm tắt chương trình diệt vi-rút sau khi cài đặt xong thì sẽ mở lên lại. Đối với các bạn chuyên nghiệp hơn thì các bạn đã biết rồi, hãy hướng dẫn chương trình diệt vi-rút của mình cho phép chương trình CALD3 thực hiện lệnh cài đặt, ghi chép vào hệ thống những module tối quan trọng và những thay đổi cần thiết phải có để hoàn thành quá trình cài đặt.

I. CÁCH THÊM “-ING” VÀO ĐỘNG TỪ
1.
-Khi động từ tận cùng bằng một –e, ta phải bỏ -e trước khi thêm –ing
Ex: love ( loving, write ( write ( writing, etc.
Nhưng nếu động từ tận cùng bằng –ee, ta vẫn giữ nguyên chúng:
Ex: free ( freeing, see ( seeing, knee ( kneeing

2.
- Khi động từ một vần tận cùng bằng một phụ âm (trừ h, w, x, y), đi trước là một nguyên âm, ta gấp đôi phụ âm trước khi thêm –ing.
Ex: stop ( stopping, run ( running, etc.
- Nhưng:
Fix ( fixing, play ( playing (vì có x, y) ở cuối từ.
Greet ( greeting (đi trước bằng 2 nguyên âm)
Work ( working (đi trước bằng 2 phụ âm)

- Quy luật này cũng áp dụng cho động từ 2 vần, miễn là dấu nhấn nằm trên vần cuối cùng:
Be’gin ( beginning, pre’fer ( preferring
Nhưng ‘suffer ( suffering (vì dấu nhấn nằm ở vần đầu)

- Các động từ tận cùng bằng “l” thường được gấp đôi (Mĩ: không gấp đôi)

3.
- Một vài trường hợp cần phải thuộc lòng:
Die ( dying, lie ( lying, tie ( tying (hoặc tieing).

II. CÁCH THÊM “-ED” VÀO ĐỘNG TỪ
1.
- Thêm –d vào sau các động từ tận cùng bằng –ee hoặc –e
Ex: live ( lived, agree ( agreed, etc.

2.
- Thêm –ed vào các động từ còn lại:
Work ( worked, learn ( learned
- Tuy nhiên chúng ta cần chú ý như sau:

a. Đối với các động từ một vần, tận cùng bằng một nguyên âm + một phụ âm (trừ h, w, x, y), chúng ta phải gấp đôi phụ âm trước khi thêm –ed:
Ex: fit ( fitted, stop ( stopped, etc.
Nhưng: stay ( stayed (vì tận cùng là phụ âm y), work ( worked (vì tận cùng là 2 phụ âm rk), heat ( heated (vì tận cùng là 2 nguyên âm ea)

b. Đối với động từ có 2 vần có dấu nhấn ở vần cuối cùng và vần này có cấu tạo âm như trường hợp (a) nói trên, chúng ta cũng phải gấp đôi phụ âm trước khi thêm –ed:
Ex: pre’fer ( preferred, per’mit ( permitted, etc.

c. Động từ tận cùng bằng phụ âm –y, ta chia ra làm 2 trường hợp:
- trước y là một phụ âm, ta biến y thành i trước khi thêm –ed: study ( studied (phát âm –ied là /id/)
- trước y là một nguyên âm, ta thêm –ed bình thường: play ( played.

III. CÁCH THÊM “-S/-ES” VÀO ĐỘNG TỪ HOẶC DANH TỪ
1.
- Hầu hết các danh từ số nhiều đều được thành lập bằng cách thêm –s vào danh từ số ít.
Ex: boy ( boys, house ( houses, dog ( dogs, etc.

2.
- Các danh từ tận cùng bằng s, sh, ch, x, z được tạo thành số nhiều bằng cách thêm –es
Ex: dish ( dishes, church ( churches, box ( boxes, bus ( buses, quiz ( quizes, etc.

3. Riêng đối với các danh từ có tận cùng bằng –y thì ta chia ra làm hai trường hợp:
- Nếu trước –y là một phụ âm, ta bỏ -y thêm –ies vào danh từ: baby ( babies, country ( countries, etc.
- Nếu trước –y là một nguyên âm, ta chỉ thêm –s vào danh từ: boy ( boys, day ( days, etc.

4.
- Một số danh từ tận cùng bằng –f hoặc –fe như calf, half, knife, leaf, life, loaf, self, thief, wife, wolf được tạo thành số nhiều bằng cách bỏ đi –f hoặc –fe rồi thêm vào –ves.
Ex: knife ( knives, wolf ( wolves, etc.
- Các danh từ tận cùng bằng –f hoặc –fe còn lại thì ta thêm –s vào cuối danh từ để tạo thành hình thức số nhiều cho danh từ đó.
Ex: roof ( roofs, belief ( beliefs, cliffs, etc.

5.
- Một số danh từ tận cùng bằng một phụ âm + o được tạo thành hình thức số nhiều bằng cách thêm –es.
Eg: tomato ( tomatoes, potato ( potatoes, hero ( heroes, echo ( echoes
- Các danh từ tận cùng bằng một nguyên âm + o, các từ vay mượn của nước ngoài hoặc các từ được viết tắt thì chỉ cần thêm –s để tạo thành hình thức số nhiều.
Eg: zoo ( zoos, radio ( radios, photo ( photos, piano ( pianos

6. Một số trường hợp danh từ bất quy tắc thông dụng:

MASS and COUNT Nouns

Trước hết chúng ta dùng much và little với các danh từ không đếm được.

Ví dụ: much time, much luck, little energy, little money

Chúng ta dùng many và few với các danh từ số nhiều đếm được.

Ví dụ: many friends, many people, few cars, few countries,…v.v

Chúng ta dùng a lot of /lots of / plenty of với các danh từ không đếm được, ví dụ: a lot of luck, lots of time, plenty of money và danh từ đếm được số nhiều, ví dụ: a lot of people, lots of books, plenty of ideas

Ta dùng plenty of với nghĩa là nhiều cái gì đó nhưng có sắc thái nhấn mạnh sự dư thừa.

Ví dụ:

There is no need to hurry. I’ve got plenty of time. (Không việc gì phải vội. Chúng ta có rất nhiều thời gian hoặc Chúng ta có thừa thời gian)

Điều đáng chú ý tiếp theo là chúng ta dùng “much” và “many” chủ yếu trong các câu phủ định và câu hỏi.

Ví dụ:

I didn’t spend much money. (Tôi không tiêu hết nhiều tiền)

Have you got many friends? (Cậu có nhiều bạn không?)

Trong các câu khẳng định, chúng ta thường dùng “a lot of” nhiều hơn. “Much” rất ít dùng trong câu khẳng định. Ví dụ ta nói:

We spent a lot of money. (Chúng tôi tiêu hết nhiều tiền) chứ ta không nói We spent much money

hoặc: There has been a lot of rain recently. (Gần đây trời mưa rất nhiều) mà không nói là There has been much rain recently.

Nhưng chúng ta lại dùng “too much” trong các câu khẳng định.

Ví dụ:

I can’t drink this coffee. There is too much sugar in it. (Tôi không thể uống được thứ cà phê này. Có quá nhiều đường ở trong)

Tiếp theo, mời bạn tìm hiểu cách dùng của little và a little, few và a few đồng thời so sánh

chúng với nhau.

Trước hết, little và few không có a đứng trước được dùng với nghĩa phủ định.

Ví dụ:

Hurry up! We have little time. (Nhanh lên, chúng ta còn ít thời gian lắm). Cụm little time ở đây có nghĩa tương đương với not much time, not enough time tức là không có nhiều thời gian, không có đủ thời gian.

hoặc:

He is dishonest. He has few friends. (Anh ta không trung thực. Anh ta có rất ít bạn bè). Cụm few friends tương đương với not many hoặc not enough friends.

Chúng ta cũng có thể dùng little và few với trạng từ chỉ mức độ very để nhấn mạnh trong các cụm “very little” và “very few”. Ví dụ:

We have got very little time.

He has very few friends.

a little và a few. A little và a few thường mang nghĩa xác định là “một chút, một ít”.

Ta có các ví dụ sau:

Ví dụ thứ nhất:

Have you got any money? - Yes, a little. Do you want to borrow some? (Bạn có tiền không? Có, một ít. Anh có muốn vay không?) A little ở đây hàm ý là có không nhiều nhưng đủ cho anh muợn một ít.

Ví dụ thứ hai:

She enjoys her life here. She has a few friends and they meet quite often.

(Cô ấy thích cuộc sống ở đây. Cô ấy có một vài người bạn và họ gặp nhau rất thường xuyên).

Ở đây a few friends nói đến số lượng người bạn mà cô ấy có là một vài người chứ không phải ám chỉ cô ấy có ít bạn.

Tuy nhiên “Only a few” và “only a little” lại mang nghĩa phủ định. Ví dụ như trong các câu sau:

Hurry up! We’ve only got a little time. (Nhanh lên! Chúng ta chỉ còn chút xíu thời gian thôi đấy)

There were only a few houses in this small village. (Chỉ có một vài, tức là ám chỉ rất ít, ngôi nhà trong làng này).

Much & many

Many hoặc much thường đứng trước danh từ. Many đi với danh từ đếm được và much đi với danh từ không đếm được:

She didn’t eat much breakfast.

(Cô ta không ăn sáng nhiều)

There aren’t many large glasses left.

(Không còn lại nhiều cốc lớn)

Tuy nhiên much of có thể đi với tên người và tên địa danh:

I have seen too much of Howard recently.

(Gần đây tôi hay gặp Howard)

Not much of Denmark is hilly.

(Đan mạch không có mấy đồi núi)

Many/much of + determiner (a, the, this, my... ) + noun.

You can’t see much of a country in a week.

(Anh không thể biết nhiều về một nước trong vòng một tuần đâu.)

I won’t pass the exam. I have missed many of my lessons.

(Tôi sẽ không thoát được kỳ thi này mất, tôi bỏ quá nhiều bài.)

Many và much dùng nhiều trong câu phủ định và câu nghi vấn, trong câu khẳng định có thể dùng các loại từ khác như plenty of, a lot, lots of... để thay thế.

How much money have you got? I’ve got plenty.

He got lots of men friends, but he doesn’t know many women.

Tuy vậy trong tiếng Anh, much và many vẫn được dùng bình thường trong câu khẳng định.

Much has been written about the causes of unemployment in the opinion of many economists.

Much dùng như một phó từ (much đứng trước động từ nhưng đứng sau very và sau cấu trúc phủ định của câu):

I don’t travel much these days. (much = very often)

I much appreciate your help. (much=highly)

We very much prefer the country to the town.

Janet much enjoyed her stay with your family.

Much too much / many so many (để nhấn mạnh) dùng độc lập sau mệnh đề chính, trước danh từ mà nó bổ ngữ.

The cost of a thirty-second commercial advertisement on a television show is $300,000, much too much for most business.

Many a + singular noun + singular verb: Biết bao nhiêu.

Many a strong man has disheartened before such a challenge.

(Biết bao chàng trai tráng kiện đã nản lòng trước một thử thách như vậy)

I have been to the top of the Effeil tower many a time.

Many’s the + {smt that / sbody who} + singular verb

Many’s the student who couldn’t follow the post-graduate courses at universities and colleges under the pressure of money.

(Biết bao nhiêu sinh viên đã không thể theo học các trường ĐH và CĐ do thiếu tiền)

Many’s the promise that has been broken.

(Biết bao nhiêu lời hứa đã bị phản bội)

22.2 Phân biệt alot/ lots of/ plenty/ a great deal với many/ much

Các thành ngữ trên đều có nghĩa tương đương với much/ many (nhiều) và most (đa phần). A lot of/ lots of (informal) = a great deal/ a large number of/ much/ many (formal).

Không có khác nhau gì mấy giữa a lot of và lots of. Chủ ngữ chính sau hai thành ngữ này sẽ quyết định việc chia động từ.

A lot of time is needed to learn a language.

Lots of us think it’s time for an election.

Plenty of được dùng phổ biến trong informal English.

Don’t rush, there’s plenty of time.

A large a mount of = a great deal of + non-count noun (formal English)

I have thrown a large amount of old clothing.

Mr Lucas has spent a great deal of time in the Far East.

A lot và a great deal có thể được dùng làm phó từ và vị trí của nó là ở cuối câu.

On holiday we walk and swim a lot.

The gorvernment seems to change its mind a great deal.

22.3 More & most

More + noun/noun phrase: dùng như một định ngữ

We need more time.

More university students are having to borrow money these day.

More + of + personal/geographic names

It would be nice to see more of Ray and Barbara.

(Rất hay khi được gặp Ray và Barbara thường xuyên hơn.)

Five hundred years ago, much more of Britain was covered with trees.

(500 năm trước đây, đa phần nước Anh phủ nhiều rừng hơn bây giờ nhiều)

More of + determiner/pronoun (a/ the/ my/ this/ him/ them...)

He is more of a fool than I thought.

(Nó là một thằng ngu hơn tôi tưởng nhiều)

Three more of the missing climbers have been found.

Could I have some more of that smoked fish.

I don’t think any more of them want to come.

One more/ two more... + noun/ noun phrase

There is just one more river to cross.

Nhưng phải dùng cardinal number (số đếm) + noun + more (Five dollars more) nếu more mang nghĩa thêm nữa.

He has contributed $50, and now he wants to contribute $50 more.

Most + noun = Đa phần, đa số

Most cheese is made from cow’s milk.

Most Swiss people understand French.

Most + determiner/ pronoun (a, the, this, my, him...) = Hầu hết...

He has eaten 2 pizzas and most of a cold chicken.

Most of my friends live abroad.

She has eaten most of that cake.

Most of us thought he was wrong.

Most cũng được dùng thay cho một danh từ, nếu ở trên, danh từ hoặc chủ ngữ đó đã được nhắc đến.

Some people had difficulty with the lecture, but most understood.

Ann and Robby found a lot of blackberries, but Susan found the most.

Most + adjective khi mang nghĩa very (không phổ biến)

22.4 Long & (for) a long time

Long được dùng trong câu hỏi và câu phủ định.

Have you been waiting long?

It does not take long to get to her house.

She seldom stays long.

(for) a long time dùng trong câu khẳng định

I waited for a long time, but she didn’t arrive.

It takes a long time to get to her house.

Long cũng được dùng trong câu khẳng định khi đi với: too, enough, as, so

The meeting went on much too long.

I have been working here long enough. It’s time to get a new job.

You can stay as long as you want.

Long before (lâu trước khi)/ long after (mãi sau khi)/ long ago (cách đây đã lâu)

We used to live in Paris, but that was long before you were born.

Long after the accident he used to dream that he was dying.

Long mang vai trò phó từ phải đặt sau trợ động từ, trước động từ chính:

The dùng cho cả danh từ đếm được (số ít lẫn số nhiều) và danh từ không đếm được.
Ví dụ:
- The truth (sự thật)
- The time (thời gian)
- The bicycle (một chiếc xe đạp)
- The bicycles (những chiếc xe đạp)
Dùng mạo từ xác định
1/ Khi vật thể hay nhóm vật thể là duy nhất hoặc được xem là duy nhất
Ví dụ:
- The sun (mặt trời); the sea (biển cả)
- The world (thế giới); the earth (quả đất)

2/ Trước một danh từ, với điều kiện danh từ này vừa mới được đề cập trước đó.
Ví dụ:
- I saw a beggar. The beggar looked curiously at me.
(Tôi thấy một người ăn xin. Người ăn xin ấy nhìn tôi với vẻ tò mò)

3/ Trước một danh từ, với điều kiện danh từ này được xác định bằng một cụm từ hoặc một mệnh đề.
Ví dụ:
- The girl in uniform (Cô gái mặc đồng phục)
- The mechanic that I met (Người thợ máy mà tôi đã gặp)
- The place where I waited for him (Nơi mà tôi đợi anh ta)

4/ Trước một danh từ chỉ một vật riêng biệt
Ví dụ:
- My father is working in the garden
- (Cha tôi đang làm việc trong vườn) [Vườn nhà tôi]
- Please pass the dictionary (Làm ơn đ a quyển tự điển) [Tự điển ở trên bàn]

5/ Trước so sánh cực cấp, Trước first (thứ nhất), second (thứ nhì), only (duy nhất).... khi các từ này được dùng như tính từ hay đại từ.
Ví dụ:
- The first day (ngày đầu tiên)
- The best time (thời gian thuận tiện nhất)
- The only way (cách duy nhất)
- The first to discover this accident (người đầu tiên phát hiện tai nạn này)

6/ The + Danh từ số ít tượng trưng cho một nhóm thú vật hoặc đồ vật
Ví dụ:
- The whale is in danger of becoming extinct (Cá voi đang trong nguy cơ tuyệt chủng)
- The fast food has made life easier for housewives.(Thức ăn nhanh đã làm cho các bà nội trợ có cuộc sống dễ dàng hơn)

7/ The có thể dùng Trước một thành viên của một nhóm người nhất định
Ví dụ:
- The small shopkeeper is finding business increasingly difficult (Giới chủ tiệm nhỏ thấy việc buôn bán ngày càng khó khăn)

8/ The + Danh từ số ítdùng Trước một động từ số ít. Đại từ là He / She /It
Ví dụ:
- The first-class passenger pays more so that he enjoys some comfort.
(Hành khách đi vé hạng nhất trả tiền nhiều hơn để hưởng tiện nghi thoải mái)

9/ The + Tính từtượng trưng cho một nhóm người
Ví dụ:
-The old (người già); the rich and the poor (người giàu và người nghèo)

10/ The dùng Trước những danh từ riêng chỉ biển, sông, quần đảo, dãy núi, tên gọi số nhiều của các nước, sa mạc, miền
Ví dụ:
- The Pacific (Thái Bình Dương); The Netherlands (Hà Lan)
- The Crimea (Vùng Crimê); The Alps (dãy Alps)

11/ The cũng đứng Trước những tên gọi gồm Danh từ + of + danh từ
Ví dụ:
- The Gulf of Mexico (Vịnh Mêhicô)
- The United States of America (Hiệp chủng quốc Hoa Kỳ).
Nhưng người ta lại nói:
- South Africa (Nam Phi), North America (Bắc Mỹ), West Germany (Tây Đức),mặc dù The north of Spain (Bắc Tây Ban Nha), The Middle East (Trung Đông); The West (Tây Phương)

12 The + họ (ở số nhiều) nghĩa là Gia đình ...
Ví dụ: The Smiths = Gia đình Smith (vợ chồng Smith và các con)

Không dùng mạo từ xác định

1/ Trước tên quốc gia, tên châu lục, tên núi, tên hồ, tên đường.
Ví dụ:
Europe (Châu Âu), South America (Nam Mỹ), France (Pháp quốc), Downing Street (Phố Downing)

2/ Khi danh từ không đếm được hoặc danh từ số nhiều dùng theo nghĩa chung nhất, chứ không chỉ riêng trường hợp nào.
Ví dụ:
- I don't like French beer (Tôi chẳng thích bia của Pháp)
- I don't like Mondays (Tôi chẳng thích ngày thứ hai)

3/ Trước danh từ trừu tượng, trừ phi danh từ đó chỉ một trường hợp cá biệt.
Ví dụ:
- Men fear death (Con người sợ cái chết)
Nhưng:
- The death of the President made his country acephalous (cái chết của vị tổng thống đã khiến cho đất nước ông không có người lãnh đạo).

4/ Sau sở hữu tính từ (possessive adjective) hoặc sau danh từ ở sở hữu cách (possessive case) .
Ví dụ:
- My friend, chứ không nói My the friend
- The girl's mother = the mother of the girl (Mẹ của cô gái)

5/ Trước tên gọi các bữa ăn.
Ví dụ:
-They invited some friends to dinner.
(Họ mời vài người bạn đến ăn tối)
Nhưng:
- The wedding breakfast was held in a beautiful garden
(Bữa tiệc cưới được tổ chức trong một khu vườn xinh đẹp)

6/ Trước các tước hiệu.
Ví dụ:
- President Roosevelt (Tổng thống Roosevelt)
- King Louis XIV of France (Vua Louis XIV của Pháp)

7/ Trong các trường hợp sau đây:
- Women are always fond of music (Phụ nữ luôn thích âm nhạc)
- Come by car/by bus (Đến bằng xe ôtô/xe búyt)
- In spring/in autumn (Vào mùa xuân/mùa thu), last night (đêm qua), next year(năm tới), from beginning to end (từ đầu tới cuối), from left to right (từ trái sang phải).
- To play golf/chess/cards (chơi gôn/ đánh cờ/đánh bài)

Lưu ý
·Nature mang nghĩa "Tự nhiên , thiên nhiên " thì không dùng the.
Ví dụ:
- According to the laws of nature (Theo quy luật tự nhiên)
- They couldn't tolerate city life anymore and went back to nature(Họ không chịu nổi đời sống thành thị nữa và trở về với thiên nhiên)

·He listened to the radio(Anh ta nghe rađiô), nhưng He watchedtelevision(Anh ta xem TV) ; hoặc He heard it on the radio(Anh ta nghe được việc đó trên rađiô), nhưng He saw it on TV(Anh ta thấy việc đó trên TV).

·Go home/get home (Đi về nhà), be at home (™ nhà), nhưng Theyreturned to the bridegroom's home (Họ trở lại nhà chú rể). Go to bed/hospital/church/school/work/prison (Đi ngủ/đi nằm bệnh viện/đi lễ/đi học/đi làm/ đi tù), nhưng They went to the school to see their children's teacher (Họ đến trường để gặp thầy của con họ) & Thepriest goes to the jail topray for the two dying prisoners(Linh mục đến nhà tù để cầu nguyện cho hai người tù đang hấp hối) & She will get a bus at the church (Cô ta sẽ đón xe búyt ở chỗ nhà thờ).Nói chung, không thể thiếu The nếu đến trường không phải để học, đến nhà tù không phải để ở tù hoặc đến nhà thờ không phải để dự lễ.

HƯỚNG DẪN SỬ DỤNG CHƯƠNG TRÌNH

LỚP NGOẠI NGỮ OFFLINE 1.0

Đầu tiên, bạn tạo một thư mục tạm thời trên ổ đĩa cứng (mình lấy ví dụ thư mục được tạo là Temp), sau đó chép tất cả các file trên 2 đĩa CD vào thư mục này. Giải nén rồi chép thư mục Lop ngoai ngu vào thư mục gốc của ổ đĩa bất kỳ (có thể là C:\; D:\; E:\,... ở đây mình đưa ra lựa chọn là thư mục gốc của ổ đĩa C:\).

Sau khi đã hoàn thành, bây giờ bắt đầu sử dụng chương trình: Bạn truy cập vào thư mục Lop ngoai ngu, sau đó chạy (mở) tập tin LNNO.lnk (nếu không chạy được tập tin này thì các bạn chạy tập tin index.htm bằng trình duyệt Internet Explorer). Thông báo To help protect… xuất hiện (như hình bên dưới, dòng chữ nằm ngay sau dấu ! màu vàng)

Bạn nhấn chuột trái vào dòng thông báo này chọn Allow Blocked Content… > click chọn Yes, giao diện web của chương trình sẽ hiện ra. LNNO không phải là một chương trình thật sự, đây chỉ là bản sao của trang web lopngoaingu.com và một chút tuỳ biến để sử dụng offline.

Tiếp theo, bạn nhấn vào dòng chữ Nói về LNNO ở phiá góc trên tay phải màn hình, kéo thanh cuộn trình duyệt xuống phía dưới rồi nhấn chọn ổ đĩa chứa thư mục Lop ngoai ngu mà bạn đã chép vào trước đó. Khi thấy thông báo Chúc mừng bạn đã lưu chương trình LNNO thành công coi như bạn đã hoàn tất, bạn nhấn nút BẮT ĐẦU để bắt đầu học.

· HOME: Trang chủ, nơi bạn làm bài kiểm tra, luyện thi TOEFL.

· GRAMMAR (văn phạm): Học ngữ pháp tiếng Anh từ căn bản đến nâng cao, được chia thành các phần:

- ABC Grammar: Gồm 53 bài học ngữ pháp vỡ lòng với các kiến thức về từ loại, thì đơn giản, mạo từ,… Nếu mới bắt đầu học thì đây là phần không thể bỏ qua. Cần lưu ý rằng bạn nên học theo trình tự từ đầu đến cuối để đạt được hiệu quả cao nhất.

- Grammar In User: Gồm 136 điểm ngữ pháp nâng cao, chuyên sâu. Ở phần này, bạn không cần phải học theo trình tự nhất định. Cuối mỗi phần bài học đều có nút Làm bài tập (Exercises), giúp bạn hiểu bài sâu hơn và biết thêm một số mẫu câu hay.

- Basic Gammer: Bản scan cuốn sách của Saddleback Educational Pulishing. Sách gồm hai phần chính với khoảng gần 30 bài học và các bài tập để bạn thực hành.

- Picture Grammer: Một cuốn sách khá “dễ thương” với hàng loạt các bài ngữ pháp được minh hoạ bằng hình ảnh, truyện tranh. Tuy nhiên, sách lại không có bài tập đi kèm.

- Cấu trúc hay: Đây cũng là một phần khá hay, trình bày nhiều thành ngữ thông dụng. Bạn có thể nhấn vào các thành ngữ tương ứng để xem các thành ngữ khác có nghĩa liên quan.

· DICTIONARY (học từ vựng): Cung cấp một số sách, bài học giúp học từ vựng hiệu quả.

- Picture Dictionary: Gồm 117 bài học từ vựng bằng hình ảnh trực quan, giúp bạn ghi nhớ lâu hơn, dễ dàng hơn.

- Verbs (Động từ): Đây là danh sách các động từ thông dụng trong tiếng Anh được sắp xếp theo thứ tự ABC, bao gồm từ gốc (V1), V2, V3 và nghĩa.

- Học từ vựng 1: Gồm các bài học từ vựng bằng hình ảnh, nhưng được sắp xếp theo từng chủ đề gần gũi trong đời sống hàng ngày như People, Education, Sport,…

Tất cả các bài luyện nghe đều có hướng dẫn, kèm với các đoạn hội thoại dạng tiếng và hình ảnh sinh động.

· SAY – WRITING (nói và viết):

- Say It Naturally (Đàm thoại): Dạy cách dùng từ, dùng câu phù hợp với từng tình huống giao tiếp sao cho thật tự nhiên. Phần này cung cấp 18 tình huống thường gặp hàng ngày.

- Consultation: Giúp bạn tra cứu một số quy tắc, các mẫu thư viết bằng tiếng Anh thông dụng.

- English in Business (Tiếng Anh trong thương mại): Giúp bạn biết một số quy tắc giao tiếp, viết thư, các luật lệ dùng tiếng Anh trong quan hệ thương mại.

· MENU (bảng tra cứu):

- Động từ bất quy tắc.

- Đơn vị đo lường Anh - Mỹ.

Xét câu: There is a book on the table.

Câu này được dịch là : Có một quyển sách ở trên bàn.

Trong tiếng Anh thành ngữ:

There + to be được dịch là có

Khi dùng với danh từ số nhiều viết là there are

Ở đây there đóng vai trò như một chủ từ. Vậy khi viết ở dạng phủ định và nghi vấn ta làm như với câu có chủ từ + to be.

Người ta thường dùng các từ sau với cấu trúc there + to be:

many/much :nhiều

some :một vài

any :bất cứ, cái nào

many dùng với danh từ đếm được

much dùng với danh từ không đếm được

Ví dụ:

There are many books on the table.

(Có nhiều sách ở trên bàn)

nhưng

There are much milk in the bottle.

(Có nhiều sữa ở trong chai)

Chúng ta dùng some trong câu xác định và any trong câu phủ định và nghi vấn.

Ví dụ:

There are some pens on the table.

(Có vài cây bút ở trên bàn)

There isn’t any pen on the table.

(Không có cây bút nào ở trên bàn)

Is there any pen on the table? Yes, there’re some.

(Có cây bút nào ở trên bàn không? Vâng, có vài cây).

Khi đứng riêng một mình there còn có nghĩa là ở đó. Từ có ý nghĩa tương tự như there là here (ở đây).

The book is there (Quyển sách ở đó)

I go there (Tôi đi đến đó)

My house is here (Nhà tôi ở đây)

How many, How much

How many và How much là từ hỏi được dùng với cấu trúc there + to be, có nghĩa là bao nhiêu.

Cách thành lập câu hỏi với How many, How much là

How many + Danh từ đếm được + be + there + …

hoặc

How much + Danh từ không đếm được + be + there +…

Ví dụ:

How many books are there on the table?

(Có bao nhiêu quyển sách ở trên bàn?)

How much milk are there in this bottle?

(Có bao nhiêu sữa trong cái chai này?)

Have

To have là một trợ động từ (Auxiliary Verb) có nghĩa là có.

Khi sử dụng nghĩa có với một chủ từ ta dùng have chứ không phải there + be.

Have được viết thành has khi dùng với chủ từ ngôi thứ ba số ít.

Ví dụ:

I have many books (Tôi có nhiều sách)

He has a house (Anh ta có một căn nhà)

Để lập thành câu phủ định và nghi vấn ta cũng thêm not sau have hoặc chuyển have lên đầu câu. Ví dụ:

I haven’t any book.

(Tôi không có quyển sách nào)

Have you any book?

(Anh có quyển sách nào không?)

Khi dùng trong câu phủ định với một danh từ đếm được người ta có khuynh hướng dùng have no hơn là have not.

Ví dụ:

I have no money (Tôi không có tiền)

(Để ý trong câu này không có mạo từ)

have not được viết tắt thành haven’t

has not hasn’t

Như vậy chúng ta không dùng very ở trước động từ trong trường hợp đó, và ở đây phải dùng very much chứ không phải very many vì sự thích là một đại lượng không đếm được.

a lot: cũng có nghĩa là nhiều

Ví dụ:

I do a lot of works this morning

(Tôi làm nhiều việc sáng nay)

over there: ở đằng kia

My house is over there

(Nhà tôi ở đằng kia)

She stands over there

(Cô ta đứng ở đằng kia)

at home: ở nhà

Present continuous tense (Hiện tại tiếp diễn).

Thì Present Continuous là thì hiện tại tiếp diễn, nó được dùng để chỉ sự việc đang tiếp diễn trong hiện tại.

Cách thành lập Present Continuous:

To be + Verb -ing

Có nghĩa là trong câu luôn có động từ to be được chia phù hợp với chủ từ theo sau là một động từ có thêm -ing ở cuối.

Ví dụ:

I am working

(Tôi đang làm việc)

He is doing his exercises.

(Anh ta đang làm bài tập)

Trong các câu này các động từ to work, to do là các động từ chính để diễn tả hành động trong câu còn am, is và -ing được dùng để diễn tả sự tiếp diễn, lúc này am, is không có nghĩa bình thường là thì, là, ở.

Trong trường hợp câu có động từ chính là to be (để diễn tả nghĩa thì, là, ở) khi viết ở thì hiện tại tiếp diễn ta vẫn phải thêm động từ to be và thêm -ing ở động từ chính bằng cách viết thành being.

Ví dụ:

My book is on the table.

(Quyển sách của tôi trên bàn)

- My book is being on the table

(Quyển sách của tôi đang ở trên bàn)

He is at his office.

(Anh ta ở cơ quan)

- He is being at his office.

(Anh ta đang ở cơ quan)

Đối với can khi dùng ở thì Present Continuous không thể thêm ing cho can mà phải đổi can thành be able to rồi mới thêm ing.

Ví dụ:

He can do this – He is being able to do this

Các trạng từ sau thường hay dùng với thì Present Continuous:

at the moment : lúc này, bây giờ

now : bây giờ

presently : hiện thời, hiện nay

at present : hiện nay

today : hôm nay

Chúng ta cũng dễ đoán rằng khi dùng ở thể phủ định sẽ thêm not sau động từ to be và thể nghi vấn chuyển to be lên đầu câu.

Ví dụ:

I’m not working

(Tôi không đang làm việc)

Are you being busy?

(Anh có đang bận không?)

Thì Present Continuous được dùng trong các trường hợp:

Khi nói về một điều đang xảy ra vào lúc nói:

I wish you to be quiet. I’m studying.

(Tôi mong anh giữ im lặng. Tôi đang học)

Khi nói về một điều gì đó xảy ra quanh hiện tại nhưng không nhất thiết phải đúng ngay thời điểm đang nói.

Ta xét các tình huống sau:

Tom and Ann are talking and drinking in a cafe. Tom say: ‘I’m reading an interesting book at the moment’.

(Tom và Ann trò chuyện và uống nước trong một quán cà phê. Tom nói: ‘Lúc này tôi đang đọc một quyển sách hay’…)

Rõ ràng Tom không phải đang đọc vào lúc nói câu ấy, nhưng thì hiện tại tiếp diễn ở đây chỉ rằng anh ta đã bắt đầu đọc quyển sách đó và cho đến bây giờ vẫn chưa xong.

Silvia is learning English at the moment.

(Hiện giờ Silvia đang học tiếng Anh)

He’s building his house.

(Anh ta đang xây nhà)

Người ta cũng dùng thì Present Continuous để nói về một giai đoạn gần hiện tại như:

today (hôm nay), this season (mùa này),…

‘You’re working today?’ ‘Yes, I have a lot to do’.

(Hôm nay anh có làm việc không? Có, tôi có nhiều việc để làm)

Tom isn’t playing football this season

(Tom không chơi đá banh mùa này)

Thì Present Continuous còn được dùng để nói về một tình thế đang thay đổi:

The population of the world is rising very fast.

(Dân số thế giới đang tăng rất nhanh)

The number of people without jobs is rising at the moment.

(Lúc này số người thất nghiệp đang tăng)

The economic situation is becoming very bad.

(Tình hình kinh tế đang trở nên tồi tệ)

Thì Present Continuous còn được dùng để diễn tả một hành động tương lai nhất là với các động từ có nghĩa di chuyển như:

to go (đi), to come (đến), to leave (rời bỏ),…

We are going to Paris on Friday.

(Chúng tôi định đi Pari vào thứ sáu)

I’m going to see you tonigh.

(Tôi định gặp anh tối nay)

I’m going to smoke.

(Tôi định hút thuốc).

Phương pháp thêm ing sau động từ

Với hầu hết các động từ cứ đơn giản thêm ing ở cuối.

Các động từ tận cùng bằng e và trước e là một phụ âm thì bỏ e trước khi thêm ing.

Các động từ kết thúc bằng một phụ âm, trước phụ âm đó là một nguyên âm và trước nguyên âm lại là một phụ âm thì gấp đôi phụ âm cuối trước khi thêm ing.

Chúng ta đã biết one có nghĩa là một, nhưng one còn được dùng để thay thế bất kỳ một người và vật nào. Thường dùng one để tránh lặp lại một danh từ nào đó.

Ví dụ:

This book is bad, I want to have an other one.

(Quyển sách này dở, tôi muốn một quyển khác.)

I see one’s pen.

(Tôi trông thấy cây viết của ai đó).
