1st Commencement Exercises of the Quick Service Restaurant Operations Course

Anihan honored the first batch of the QSRO Class 2019 on June 7.

The one year skill bridging program was made possible by the collaboration of private corporations, nonprofit organizations, and local government units. Having many people to celebrate, this ceremony is more than special to everyone. The graduation day of the twenty-seven QSRO students was also the 33rd Anniversary of Anihan Technical School.

The guest Alumna, Mrs. Mary May Mabalot-Macote, remembered her experience in Anihan twelve years ago. Her life as an Anihan student was memorable and challenging. She mentioned the knowledge, skills, values, and virtues she gained from Anihan. As she stated, " As a person, ito ang pinakaimportanteng natutunan ko sa Anihan: passion in everything I do; being grateful in everything I have; and being humble in everything that I've become. Tinulungan nila akong maging mas malapit sa Diyos- sa pagpapatatag ng aking relationship with God. Habang buhay kong tatanawing utang na loob ito sa inyo."

Lastly, she left an inspiring and challenging message for the graduates: "Be a role model lalo na sa mga kabataang babae tulad ninyo. Don't be discouraged if someone criticize you, instead, take criticism as a challenge to improve. Embrace it and learn from it. You should try even harder to be responsible at work and never stop learning. Strengthen your relationship with God by constantly praying. Be a living proof that Anihan is not just our ordinary school. It is our home. It is our family."

32nd Commencement Exercises of Anihan Technical School

On April 30, Anihan held its graduation ceremony for its 2nd Batch of Senior High School students at the school's Multipurpose Hall.

Mrs. Camille Manzanero-Chua, the Anihan Guest Alumna, shared her success story to inspire the graduates and everybody present in the event. She talked about the challenges she had while still a student, but it was not a reason to stop pursuing. As she graduated from Anihan on 2007, she was immediately employed at The Palms Country Club as an employee in Pastry until 2010. She transferred to Marriott Hotel Manila and for less than a year she became the Commis Chef in Pastry. In 2015, she was given a higher position as Commis 1 in Pastry, and recently she was promoted as the Demi Chef in Pastry. She reminded the graduates to dream big and have a good attitude in every aspect of their journey.

She added, "I think the right tool to gain trust and respect from your boss and co-leagues is having good attitude. Because for me, if you do not have any skills, you can learn it even if you are a beginner. Without experience you can still be taught. There is no learning to having a good attitude."

The commencement ceremony ends the graduates' Senior High School life and marks the start of a new beginning. As said by Angelica Cabbab in her speech, "We started in this journey with almost nothing. And now we have reached the end. But this end is just the start of another new beginning. It is a one big step towards our success and we need to let go of each other. But we will keep all the memories with us and more than that, we will pray for each other."

To all the students, parents, faculty, staff, management staffs, mentors, patrons, sponsors, cooperators, industry partners, thank you for making the School Year 2018-2019 a success.

Anihan's 3rd Open House

All female grade 10 students and TLE teachers were invited for a one day Open School at Anihan Technical School- FPTI on February 8, 2019.

Anihan opened its doors to a total of 214 Female Grade 10 students from different schools. The students went on a school tour with the assistance of Anihan Grade 11 students. Aside from the school tour, the prospective students witnessed baking, cooking, and Food and Beverage Services demonstrations. Lastly, the students participated to parlor games and received freebies.

Thanks to Anihan students, faculty, staff, participating schools, patrons, sponsors, donors, partners, and collaborators who made this event possible and successful!

Anihan pays tribute to Ms. Dolores "Odgie" Toquero

Anihan Technical School prays for the eternal repose of the soul of Ms. Dolores Toquero.

The Anihan students and staff, together with the Anihan graduates, mentors, and patrons are united in fondly remembering "Ms. Odgie". Though we will miss her very much, we are also comforted by the fact that she was lovingly accompanied by family and friends especially in her last days and that she was spiritually prepared and at peace when it was time for her to go.

Anihan Extension Building

Anihan Technical School sponsors and collaborators together with FPTI officers cut the ribbons to inaugurate the new Anihan Extension Building on 15 November 2018.

Bishop Buenaventura Famadico (Diocese of San Pablo) performed the blessing rite for the new extension building. With him were Msgr. Carlos Estrada (Regional Vicar of Opus Dei) and Fr. Dennis Yu (Anihan Technical School Chaplain).

Anihan’s new extension building consists of a science laboratory a computer room, a mock bedroom for the Housekeeping NC II qualification, additional classrooms, offices, and a bigger faculty room as well as more spacious dining areas for students and staff.

Every year, Anihan gives out full-tuition scholarship grants to young women from lower-income families to enable them to study and then be immediately employed after graduation. With this new facility, Anihan can increase its number of beneficiaries from 120 to 270 every year.

The construction of Anihan’s new extension building was made possible through the donations of Anihan Livelihood Center, Conferenza Episcopale Italiana, Doña Elena, Philam Foundation, San Miguel Corporation, S.C. Johnson, United Graphic Expression Corporation (UGE CORP), 8990 Holdings, Inc., and the following individuals, companies, and organizations:

Among the event’s attendees were Anihan’s industry partners who generously contributed their respective special dishes and treats for the buffet: Chiara's Gelato Cakes, Donappetit Cakes and Pastries, Flour Jar, Mary Grace, Pegi Waffles, The Palms Country Club, The Pigpen, and Romulo Café. Ms. Pauline Espiritu, the program host, is an Anihan volunteer as well as an advocate of medical health for healthcare practitioners and a marketing practitioner.

Established in 1986, Anihan continues to carry out its mission of making quality education and training accessible to women from the lower income sector, helping them to find in themselves the emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual courage to make a positive change in their own lives and help improve the lives of those around them.

The occasion was marked by gratitude to all who collaborate with Anihan. Students and staff were lucky to have among the guests Ms Lali Sastre, one of the first who came to the Philippines from Spain in 1965 to start the apostolic work of Opus Dei among women, spreading the message of finding God in ordinary, daily life. For her and for the whole Anihan family, the words of St. Josemaría Escrivá, founder of Opus Dei, rang true once more: Dream and your dreams will fall short.

Anihan Faculty Development: Paghilom sa Bawat Pamilya

"Kaya mo yan!"

"Parang 'yan lang? Di pa katapusan ng mundo."

"Hindi lang ikaw ang naghihirap sa mundo."

"Kapit lang!"

These are the common advises and reinforcements that we say to someone who is depressed. "But these don't help. Instead of saying, 'Kayanin mo!' Say, 'Nandito lang ako. Kakayanin natin ito ng magkasama tayo.", Dr. Noel Cruz, the Internal Medicine Resident at UP-PGH.

Eight faculty members of Anihan Technical School, together with educators from different institutions, medical practitioners, patients, and their families participated in an enlightening seminar at the Philippine Red Cross, Mandaluyong City on November 10, 2018. It was the 4th Family Conference on Mental Health with the theme, “Creating a Vision of Recovery for Families: Paghilom sa Bawat Pamilya.”

The seminar highlighted topics on mental health and illnesses such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, as well as handling emotions, healing and recovery, psycho-social rehabilitation for recovering patients, and empowering stories of people who recovered or are able to manage these disorders. The Philippine Mental Health Law (RA 11036) was also accentuated in the conference. The gathering aimed to enlighten everyone about the misconceptions about Mental Health and Mental Health Disorders.

The highlight of the program was Vice President Leni Robredo's message. She recounted how she initiated to push for the Mental Health Law. VP Robredo stated, "I consulted many of my psychiatrist friends. I was asking them what was wrong with our mental health program and that was only when I realized we did not have an existing mental health policy for the country. So, I started pushing it… Mahirap talagang i-push sa congress… I have to be very honest with you. Kulang sa interes sa mental health. Talagang marginalized na topic. And it is contributing more to the stigma because there is too much misinformation, there’s no real policy, and because there is very little interest in the illness.”

VP Robredo added, “I am really very happy that more attention was given to it in the congress. So nakapasa siya. And I think lahat tayo should be vigilant in making sure that the implementation is done in accordance with how we envisioned the implementation would be.”

The talks were full of eye-opening information about various students' behaviors that can help teachers understand students' situations and help them. The recovery of a person with mental illness will be possible especially when his/her family will never leave his/her side. Teachers can also help encourage students' families in this.

PESFA Graduation Ceremony

Anihan Technical School proudly held the Graduation Ceremony of PESFA on August 8, 2018 (First Batch), October 5, 2018 (Second Batch), and October 30, 2018 (Third Batch). The total of fifty five graduates are the grantees of The Private Education Student Financial Assistance (PESFA) with Bread and Pastry Production NCII of The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

The PESFA program was established through Section 8 of the Republic Act No. 8545, otherwise known as the Expanded Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (GASTPE) Act.

SM TechVoc Scholars General Assembly 2018

Empowering Communities with Education

On October 6, 2018, twenty Grade 11 students of Anihan Technical School partook from the SM Foundation Technical-Vocational Scholars' General Assembly at SM Mall of Asia Complex. A total of 700 scholars from different technical schools from Manila, Laguna, and other places in Luzon participated. It was a heartwarming and firing day for the SM Scholars.

Four of the hundreds of scholars gave testimonies on how SM Foundation helped them achieve their dreams in life. One of these four scholars is Faith Fraylin I. Garcia, a Grade 11 student of Anihan. She humbly said, “Even before, I’d really like to be a professional Chef. And when the examination result came out, I was one who passed. I was very excited because I really like to be able to go to school and graduate. And now, I’m currently studying at Anihan Technical School. I learned a lot of things not only about cooking, but Values Education as well. Incorporated within the learning is the holistic formation of an individual. All of these were possible because of SM Foundation.”

“Noon pa man gusto ko ng maging isang professional Chef. At nung lumabas na ang result ng exam, ay isa ako sa mga nakapasa. Excited ako kasi pangarap ko talaga makapagpatuloy ng pag-aaral at makapagtapos. At ngayon, heto ako nag-aaral sa Anihan Technical School. Natututo ng maraming bagay hindi lang tungkol sa pagluluto, pati na rin sa Values Education. Kasama na din doon ang paghubog sa isang indibidwal upang maging isang mabuting tao. Lahat ng ito ay nakamtan ko dahil sa SM Foundation.” She also added that she wishes to be part of the SM Foundation not only to work and share knowledge but to be able to help and be a blessing for the youth.

Pistang Pinoy at Anihan Technical School

Pagdiriwang ng Wika at Kulturang Pilipino

The Anihan Technical School conducted an amazing and full of fun program.

On 27th of September 2018, the Anihan family celebrated the Humanities Day with the theme: “Pagdiriwang ng Wika at Kulturang Pilipino.”

Anihan students joined different activities that made them understand why Filipino language is the light and strength of our country. According to Ms. Minnie Gabutina, the school directress of Anihan Technical School, “Buwan ng Wika is the time we remind ourselves of the importance of Filipino language. Although English is used in school, I think the Filipino and language culture is one thing that could identify a person.” She also added that, “Don Fernando Ocarsiz, the present Prelate of Opus Dei, knows that the person he is talking to is a Filipino because they would always say, “Mano po, Father.”

After all the remarkable performances was the announcement of winners. It was shown in everyone’s faces- the nervousness as Miss Lorra announced the champions. After the long wait, the smashing victor for Big-Say-Wit and Pangkatang Pag-awit is the Grade 11-Saffron. And the champ for the Spoken Poetry and Katutubong Sayaw is the Grade 12-Anise. The proud advisers of each section are very happy to see their students enjoyed the event. Like what Miss Maria Senen L. Olmos said, “Panalo pa din naman ang lahat, pero kailangan talaga na may makakakuha ng sertipiko ng pagkapanalo. Ang mahalaga, naging masaya tayong lahat.” And the program ended peacefully with a smile flastered on the faces of the teachers and the students.

Courage as Purpose: The Anihan Branding Workshop

Former Vice President and Managing Director at McCann World Group Philippines Miss Cecile G. Velez conducted a two-part values-based branding workshop for Anihan Technical School. The first part of the branding workshop was held on May 4, 2018 at the NDN Grand Hotel in Sto. Tomas, Batangas. The second part took place at Anihan on September 5. All the Anihan staff actively took part in reviewing and visualizing Anihan's identity as part of its branding activity.

The Anihan management staff, faculty members, school and livelihood center staff went through a whole day of exercises to think through, voice out and visualize what they considered to be the most compelling reasons why Anihan was established and why it continues to exist.

Based on the participants' ideas on Anihan's vision, mission, values, programs, and services, Miss Velez facilitated crafting the Anihan purpose:

“To help women find in themselves the emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual courage to make a positive change in their own lives and help those around them improve their lives as well.”

With this purpose explicitly stated, the whole Anihan school community can more strongly live out its vision, mission, and core values at the service of helping women develop and empower themselves.

Anihan Faculty Morphing with Whole Brain Thinking

The Anihan Technical School, its faculty and administrators, had a professional development training titled: “Whole Brain Development and Demystifying Goals and Aspirations”, last August 7, 2018. The objective of this workshop was to improve teaching strategies, as well as illuminate queries and challenges that each of the faculty members is facing. The guest speakers gave special attention to the strategies, challenges and possible advantages one can acquire with the help of the Whole Brain Thinking Theory.

The training-workshop was conducted by Mr. Olwen Abergas, Master Teacher from the New York City Board of Education. This is the third year that Mr. Abergas has been sharing his professional expertise to the Anihan faculty as part of his personal commitment to social responsibility.

Principles of the Whole Brain Thinking Theory were imparted by Mr. Chip de Guzman, University of the Philippines-Baguio Faculty. The model of Whole Brain Thinking was developed by Ned Herrmann. Whole Brain® Thinking is a methodology designed to help thinkers, teams and organizations better benefit from all of the thinking available to them. It acknowledges that while different tasks require different mental processes, and different people prefer different kinds of thinking, organizations will get better results when they can strategically leverage the full spectrum of thinking available (Herrmann 2015).

Overall, the workshop was an eye-opening experience to all. Teaching problems and challenges of the faculty were answered. It was demonstrated how mistakes, when well-accepted, are the key to correction: it allows both teachers and students to explore the process of learning.

Anihan 2013 graduate, Mae Maries is a Sous Chef at The Morning After Restaurant

Anihan graduate, Mae Olaez is a Sous Chef at The Morning After Restaurant in Nuvali, Sta Rosa, Laguna. This restaurant was opened last May 2015, but it has already been getting the crowd’s attention due to their variety of Filipino and international breakfast and lunch meals. Mae did her On-the-Job-Training at Amici Italian Restaurant in Cold Kitchen Department for almost 4 months.

“First of all, I want to say thank you for accepting me here in Anihan, I felt everything changed, the way I talk, the way I dress and most especially, the way I look forward on how to achieve goals. Thank you Anihan for changing the way I am. Anihan graduate, Jessica, is a Kitchen Specialist in UCC Ueshima Coffee. She did her on-the-job-training at UCC Fort Café Terrace located at BGC Taguig for almost 4 months.

“I am Jessica Mamaril. I live in Brgy Milagrosa, Calamba City. I have only one sibling. My mother and father are both working in SM Calamba for almost 5 years. After I graduated in high school, I stopped for at least 1 year to take care of my sibling"

"My parents decided to send me to Anihan Technical School because it was very near in our house. I found Anihan a beautiful school and I knew there were many things to learn here, especially in terms of baking and cooking. It was a big help to our family because I did not worry about the everyday expenses in transportation. Anihan 2009 graduate, Jovie is a Pastry Chef at Hill Creek Gardens Tagaytay. Jovie used to work at Punlaan Training Center as Assistant Monitor and as a Commis Chef 3 at T House Bed and Breakfast.

Anihan 2017 graduate: Line cook 3 in Contis Bakeshop and Restaurant at SM Southmall, Las Pinas

Anihan Technical School graduate, Kimberly Balisacan did her On-the-Job-Training as Sales Assistant at Contis Bakeshop and Restaurant in October, 2016. The venue hired her immediately after her graduation, and now she is working at Contis Bakeshop and Restaurant at SM Southmall, Las Pinas.

"I am Kimberly Balisacan and I live in Muntinlupa City. I finished my secondary schooling at Muntinlupa National High School. My mother is a full time house wife and my father is a construction worker. I have two siblings; my eldest brother, named Bernard, took up criminology in University of Perpetual Help in Binan, Laguna. He was not able to finish his studies because of financial limitations. My second brother, named Michael, took Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at Technological University of the Philippines."

Anihan 2005 graduate, Merry Chris Leron is an Anihan Faculty Teacher

Anihan graduate, Merry Chris is a full time teacher at Anihan Technical School. In 2009 she applied in Anihan and was accepted as a Kitchen Lab Assistant. While working, she took the Hotel and Restaurant Management course of Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), ETEAP (Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program) and graduated in 2015. Now she has been promoted to a full-time faculty member of Anihan School teaching baking and packaging classes.

“When I graduated from Anihan, I worked at the Anihan Livelihood Center for about three years. Then I moved to the Laguna Hills Study Camp and became a Dining Attendant for almost two months. Because of my family's inadequate income I decided to work at Panasonic as a Production Operator for about half a year. I then took a diploma course in Information Technology course at STI in 2008. Because of limited finances, I decided to be a working student. I applied again at the Anihan Livelihood Center and I was fortunate that I was taken in again. After my contract with them, I moved to the PNCC (Philippine National Construction Corporation) as a Toll Teller for almost five months. There, I met my husband - Lawrence who is currently working at Allegro Microsystem Company. As of now, we have one child”

“Because of Anihan, I was able to help my parents with their daily expenses at home. My two younger sisters also graduated from Anihan, and are currently working in well-known establishments. As an eldest daughter, it was not easy to pursue my collegiate studies because of financial limitations, but I did not give up because I knew God always helps and guides me”

Sports Fest 2018 : It’s more fun in Anihan!

Anihan Sports Fest: March, 2018

Anihan students, staff and some mentors joined together to celebrate Sports Fest 2018. Everyone was ready to compete and show their talents and skills in sports. The students really do have different talents aside from cooking and baking. Some are gifted with a talent in singing, while others in dancing and choreography. Sports like volleyball, badminton, tug of war and obstacle course and the cheering competition completed the sports day. Sportsmanship and camaraderie were promoted during this annual event.

The program started with the opening remarks from Ms. Pamela Bermejo, followed by Ms. Chris Leron to introduce the set of judges for the cheering competition: Ms. Joyce Yulo, a UP graduate; Ms. Susan Encarnacion, a part time nutritionist of St Andrews Hospital in Talisay Batangas; Ms. Linda Tuazon, present Philosophy teacher of Grade 12 students.

Each team showed their creativity and eagerness to win. In the volleyball game, Ms. Nadie Balutabot sat as the referee. In this game, Blue Team (Grade 12 students) wiped out the Green and Yellow Team. In badminton, Yellow Team (Anise) smashed the chance of the remaining team to win the championship. At the end of the competition, Blue Team was declared as the over-all champion.

“The best that we can take in sports fest is UNITY. If you work in UNITY, you will say, we did our BEST” Ms Minnie said in her closing remarks. Smiles and fun memories from the Sportsfest has become one of the greatest moments of the students in their entire stay in Anihan. It’s more FUN in Anihan. It’s more fun in SPORTS.

Anihan joined in Incontro Romano National Congress 2018 at PTCC

This year, the Incontro Romano National Congress was held at the Philippine Trade Training Center on Saturday March 3. The event started at 10 am and ended at 3:30 pm. Foundation for Professional Training, Incorporated (FPTI) schools (Anihan Technical School, Manila Institute for Culinary Arts and Residential Services, Punlaan School and Habihan School) and other Opus Dei Centers like Pandan, Tawili, Dalayrayan, Linang Center participated in the event. UP Iloilo, De La Salle University and STI Batangas also joined in the congress.

Incontro Romano is an initiative that was started in 1990, thanks to Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, in order to spread the reality expressed by St. Josemaria Escriva, founder of Opus Dei: “All work has a dimension of service when it is carried out thinking about the people to whom it is directed”.

The program started with opening remarks given by Ms. Pinky Castro the National Coordinator of Incontro Romano Philippines. She explained that the event creates spaces for reflection, and promotes an activity which puts the person as the center focus. It fosters interdisciplinary research, training with excellence, and international initiatives. With these activities we seek to respond to the urgent challenge of protecting and improving our “shared home,” planet Earth. It is a platform of professionals and students who aim to highlight jobs where the direct care of the person is the principal focus, because they have the transforming power to make the social environment more human.

After that, Ms Cherrie Atilano gave an inspirational talk about the theme “Sustainability and Sustainable Development.” Ms Cherrie is the present CEO of AGREA which aim to educate the farmers in modern ways of farming. Stated below are some tips to achieve our personal goals as shared by Ms Cherrie.

C. Learn the value of commitment

D. Gratitude goes a long way

E. Stay grounded and humble however big you become

F. Working hard and having fun can happen at the same time and great things take time.
