Suddenly the atmosphere in OTS, where I am training to be an officer in Indian army, is electrified. Our passing out parade has been fixed for 2 Feb. 1964. For other GCs ('Gentlemen cadets' as trainee officers are called at the academy during training), it was a landmark day but for me it had another significance too. 2 Feb. happened to be my Birthday too. I would be exactly twenty years old on that fateful day.

Those were the days, I thought, would never end

We all had come to this great institution as boys, seven months ago but would be passing out as men, as officers of the Indian army. We had gone through the physically hardest, most trying time of our life. But it had also been equally satisfying time. Unfortunately, these days will never come back in our lives again. In hindsight, I fondly remember a line from an old English song “Those were the days, my friend, I thought, would never end”.

Today, 31.12.2020. It all seems, the mid-morning of life. How and where fifty six years (1964-2020) have gone, is simply impossible to comprehend. Time has it’s own way, moving quickly, unknowingly, catching you unaware. I was young, full of energy, and ambitious. I got married and embarked on a new life with my soul-mate, had children. They studied, married and became independent. I am seventy six years now.

I wonder where all the years have gone!

I wonder where all the years have gone. Furthermore, I know I have lived them and lived them well. But before I knew, DUSK of life has come. It seems to have come ‘so soon’. How it got here so fast, caught me by surprise? Where did my youth and middle age go? From mid-morning, straightaway dusk seems to have come, and it has come so fast, it is difficult to comprehend. During my younger days, I remember seeing older people, but ‘old age’ seemed so far away and something which only happened to others.

Those were the days, I thought, would never end.

Now, my friends, those young handsome guys full of energy and appetite, are retiring, getting gray, losing both energy and appetite. They move much slower now. They are not what I remember them to be, young, handsome, energetic, fast moving. Their age too is beginning to show. They look older, tired, hair thinning, skin sagging, eyesight getting weak, body resistance lowering, some part of body always aching when they get up.

I remember an old English song

Now, I am also just like those older people I thought, I would never be. I remember my grandfather who walked with a drooping posture with a stick, with wrinkled face, white hair. I never really believed, he was like us only, once upon a while. Likewise, I remember an old English song of our times “Those were the days, my friend, I thought would never end”.

There are things I wish I hadn’t done

Now DUSK of my life has come, but do not know how long will it last, how far is the night, and when will it all, end? Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn’t done and things I should have done. Of course, I am happy I have and was able to do many things which I should have. It’s all in a lifetime. But life is lived only once. Make the best of what you have rather than cribbing about what you don’t have. There will never be a second chance. Empty wishes (wish, I had or wish I had not) or regret will only be there to give you company.

Yes, money is important

Unfortunately, we have been entrapped into endless chase of wealth and material. Yes, money is important, but learn money’s correct perspective in life and be a master not a slave of money. Learn to make and live a life which is more important. Do not chase the illusion of happiness in material pursuits. Do not neglect your health, family and social responsibilities for single-minded pursuit of wealth, status and glamour. Think and lead a life as per the convictions dictated by your mind, not simply aping others, even though everyone else seems to be doing that.

Take action, whatever you can, NOW

So, friends, whether you are in mid-morning, noon or evening of life, DUSK shall be there sooner than you can imagine. How long it will last, no one has an idea. But, it shall be there faster than you think. Whatever you want to accomplish, do it quickly.

Live for today

Don’t postpone, don’t procrastinate. Take action, whatever you can, NOW. Live for today! Say and do things you want people to remember about you. Love people more than things, spread goodness, help others, be kind, and generous, be forgiving, forever remain in gratitude and live a life of humility. Do all these because you do not know when the clock of life will stop and which sunset or sunrise will be the last. And Remember: NEVER REGRET GROWING OLD. IT IS A PRIVILEGE DENIED TO MANY.

Despite sharing a border of 3,488 kilo metres with China, India has only reported 114 cases and 1 death as of date - compare that with 596 cases and 8 deaths in the UK. (As the specific dates)
India is the only country in the world to have evacuated its citizens 6 times (and counting) and evacuated the most number of foreign nationals too. The Indian Air Force evacuated a total of 723 Indians, 37 foreign nationals from Wuhan 119 Indians and 5 foreign nationals from Japan. IAF also evacuated 58 Indian pilgrims from Iran on the 10th of March. Total: 900 Indians and 48 foreign nationals.
India is leading the fight against COVID-19 in the South Asian Region, offering diplomatic, humanitarian and medical assistance to its neighbours.

Virus Research Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDLs)

A total of 56 Virus Research Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDLs) have been set up in India to test its citizens as well as foreign citizens in a record time, with a plan to build 56 more VRDLs in the next month. As usual, this splendid level of efficiency hasn't caught the eye of the media.

India's most efficient and reliable testing systems

India currently has one of the world’s most efficient and reliable testing systems, reducing the time taken to get test results from 12-14 hours to mere FOUR HOURS. US health officials have admitted that their system is failing and testing has been very sluggish.

As a result, from Iran, Afghanistan and many countries in Asia have been requesting India to help set up testing facilities in their countries. India has sent 6 top scientists to set up a make-shift lab and testing facility in Iran to test 6000 of its citizens because Iranian officials refused to test Indians due to their high load. India plans to send 3 more airplanes to Iran in the next week to airlift its citizens.

India has provided 15 tonnes of MEDICAL ASSISTANCE comprising masks, gloves and other emergency medical equipment to China. India has sent Maldives a 14 member medical team comprising of pulmonologists, anesthetists, physicians, and lab technicians and also a large composite of COVID-19 medical relief to assist Maldives health authorities.

Proudly, India has screened 1,057,506 people from 30 airports and 77 seaports.

WHAT INDIA HAS DONE TO FIGHT COVID-19 : A brief summary

We must know, that India has suspended all visas to India as well as visa-free travel facility. It has closed its border with Myanmar. The Indian nationals coming from COVID-19 hit nations after 15 February are being quarantined for 14 days. This in contrast with the UK with far more cases but no matching quick action.

World’s biggest State-sponsored health assurance scheme

India has the world’s biggest State-sponsored health assurance scheme, covering over 500 million beneficiaries (approximately 8 times the size of the UK). Indian drug prices are among the lowest in the world. Medbelle ranks India as one of the five countries with the lowest median prices for drugs around the world due to an elaborate price control mechanism for drugs and the Government’s 'Jan Aushadi' project to provide affordably priced medicines to the poor.

China gagged the doctor who identified COVID-19 and he died 6 weeks later. China let this virus affliction blow. On the other hand, when Nipah virus was found in India in 2018, 3 doctors identified it and authorities immediately reported it to WHO. 2000 were quarantined and 17 died in total.

India did not allow it to become a pandemic

UNFORTUNATE MAN AND HIS MOTHER

A Poor Couple lived in a Small Village in India. They had only a Son. Inspite of their meager income, they gave him the Best Education. Son graduated as an Engineer from nearby City college and got a good job. Eventually, he got married to a rich girl from the city.

Initially, they lived with His Parents in the Village. Soon, the wife got tired of village life, and persuaded her husband to move to the city, leaving his old parents in the Village. However, they kept visiting his parents off and on. But soon, as he became busier in his work, such visits became rarer and rarer.

The time passed with the son wanting more and more money and a better life for his family which, by now, included only his wife, not his parents. Simultaneously, the husband got a job with the US. Since he was urgently required to join, he could not visit his parents before the departure.

He was very successful in his new assignment abroad and got so engrossed in the new job that he completely forgot about his parents back in a small Indian village. By now, he had lived in the U.S. for about 20 years with his wife. Initially, he used to send money to his parents regularly. But as time passed, he started forgetting often. Eventually, with time, he stopped sending the money and lost touch with his parents altogether.

Unfortunate man and his mother story

However, while he prayed these days, immediately after each prayer, he could hear someone telling him in his ears that his prayers are unacceptable. He felt very uncomfortable about this, though. Ultimately one day, he related this Story to a 'Pious' man who, after knowing all the facts of his life from him, advised him to go back to India to visit his parents.

The man flew to India, and reached his Village. Everything had changed over there. He could not find his house. So, he asked the Head of the Village about the whereabouts of his old house and his Parents.

The Head of the Village directed him to a dilapidated house, and said: “In this house, lives an Old blind lady who lost her husband a few months ago. Villagers have been looking after her needs. She has a Son who migrated to the US some twenty Years back, and never came back again. What an Unfortunate Son.”

The son enters that house, and recognizes his mother on the bed but obviously in bad shape, almost listlessly sleeping. He tip-toed, as he would rather not wake her up. Suddenly, he hears his mother whispering, mumbling something while she lay half asleep. He gets closer to hear his Mother’s voice. This is what his Mother was mumbling, “God, I am now very Old, and Blind. My Husband just died. There is no one to cremate me when I Die. So please SEND MY SON to fulfill my last wish”.

This is the ending of a Story where the Prayer of a Mother has been accepted.

A human body can bear only 45 Del (units) of Pain. But at the Time of giving Birth, a Mother feels up to 57 Del (units) of Pain which is similar to 20 Bones getting fractured, all at the same time. This is just to tell you the extent, to which a Mother Loves Her Child and undergoes such extreme pains happily for the child.

That's why it is said: “God could not be everywhere, so he made mothers”.

Aging parents and our responsibilities towards them

Since we do not have a proper social security system in place as yet, most old parents must fend for themselves when they are old. Hence, parents must think and plan their future independently seriously, when they are in a position to do so, instead of simply hoping for the best. The worst out-shoot of present day materialistic unprincipled culture is that old parents are left to fend for themselves in old age. Those who are suffering now, are also to be blamed for their pitiable state. Difficult as it is to consider, they may one day need our help just as we once needed theirs. We should always be responsible for our aging parents.

Aging parents and green card

We must inculcate a sense of responsibility among our youngsters who have studied here, passed out from the elite institutions, mostly government-funded, but when time to pay-back comes, they run off to greener pastures in foreign lands, lure of‘green card’ too tempting to resist, without any remorse. Worst is that these NRIs, when they visit this country, criticize and belittle the system which has made them what they are, Thanklessness and Ingratitude personified.

Being kind and loving to others, specially those not as lucky as we are, is the essence of a good heart. Unfortunately, most people live with the misconception that we give, share, help or show kindness and compassion for others’ sake. No. All these virtues are indulged by us, first for our benefit because when we do these, we feel good about ourselves.

Do a random act of kindness daily without expectation of return and see your happiness graph scaling new heights. Robin Sharma, well-known writer of many books on self-empowerment, and life skills, says, “Kindness, quite simply, is the rent we pay for the space we occupy on this planet”.

God’s mercy and kindness

It does not make sense that while people keep clamoring for God’s mercy and kindness, they are not so kind to His creations. Your house-maid or servant, for example! It is because of their labors and efforts, our life is so comfortable. We prosper because of the hard work put-in by people working for us and share responsibilities in our business places. Person, who works at the construction site to make a beautiful house for you to live in or person, who tends to the punctured wheel of your car in the hot sun, and umpteen other chores done as service so that you can be comfortable.

Kindness

‘KINDNESS’ is a small word, but covers a great many virtues. Kindness can be anything for someone, the power of a sympathetic touch, a smile to a person for whom that might be the only touching moment of the day, a kind word, an attentive listening ear, a few honest appreciative words about a job well accomplished by the team or individual, even a small act of caring, which might cost or mean nothing to you but has the potential to change a life.

Expressions of compassion and kindness

Expressions of compassion and kindness reduce fear, induce a feel-good factor, boost confidence, and has the potential to generate immense inner strength in the doer. It makes his inner being rock-solid. It is the closest thing you can do to make God notice you. Loving God has no meaning if you are unkind to His creations. Visiting temples, and doing all sorts of pujas and rituals to appease the Gods, hardly make any sense when we ignore the poor beggars sitting outside the temple waiting for some alms so that they can eat something. When you touch a fellow human being with love and kindness, you are doing God’s work.

Without a rich heart, wealth is an ugly beggar. Be generous in giving and bestow kindness, and see your wealth do wonders to your happiness and well-being. Wife: Don’t put so many clothes for wash. The maid has said she won’t come for two days.

Husband :Why?

Wife: She said she is going to meet her granddaughter during Ganpati festival. And, Shall I give her Rs. 500 for Ganpati Festival bonus?

Husband: Why? Diwali is approaching, we will give her at that time.

Wife: Oh no, dear. She is poor. Going to meet her daughter and granddaughter, so she will also feel nice. Moreover, everything has become so expensive these days. How will she be able to celebrate festival?

Husband : You! I don’t know why you become emotional so easily.

Wife : Oh dear, don’t worry. I am going to cancel today’s program of ordering Pizza. Why unnecessarily blow away Rs. 500 on eight pieces of stale bread?

Husband : Wow. Great. Snatching Pizza from us and giving to the maid!

The maid returned after three days and got busy in mopping and dusting.

Husband asked her. So, how was the vacation?

Maid : Very delightful, sahib. Didi had given Rs. 500 … Festival bonus.

Husband : So you went and met your daughter? And also met your granddaughter?

Maid: yes sahib. Enjoyed a lot and spent Rs 500 in two days time.

Husband : Really? Ok, so what did you do with Rs. 500?

Maid : Rs. 150 for dress for granddaughter, Rs 40 for a doll, bought sweets worth Rs 50 for daughter, Rs 50 as offering to Deity in temple, Rs 60 towards bus fare, Rs 25 for bangles for daughter, bought a nice belt worth Rs 50 for son-in-law, balance Rs 75 gave to daughter to buy copy and pencil for granddaughter. The maid gave a full account of the expenses incurred.

Husband : (Surprised) So much in Rs 500?

With surprise, he started thinking. The eight pieces of Pizza appeared in front of his eyes and each one of them acted as a hammer, started pricking his consciousness. For the price of one Pizza, he started comparing the expenses his maid had incurred during her visit to her daughter.

What is the Redox reaction?

A chemical reaction that involves the exchange of electrons between any two species is called a redox reaction (oxidation-reduction). It is a reaction where the oxidation

What is Oxidation?

molecule is increased.

What is Reduction?

When an ion, atom, or molecule gains electrons during a chemical reaction it is called a
reduction reaction. This reaction occurs when the oxidation state of an ion, atom, or
molecule is decreased.

Redox reaction examples

Formation of hydrofluoric acid by the reaction of hydrogen and fluorine gas. The
reaction is as follows:

→ 2 HF
Hydrogen is oxidized whereas fluorine is reduced. To understand the reaction better,
divide it into two half-reactions:

What are Oxidizers?

Substances that are responsible to lose electrons of other substances are called
oxidizers. They are able to oxidize substances. They are also known as oxidizers,
oxidants, or oxidizing agents. It is reduced by removing electrons from other substances.
Also, since it accepts electrons it is called an electron acceptor. These chemical
substances include elements of high oxidation state such as H2O, CrO3, etc.

Why civil services is the most challenging career option in India. There are a plethora of opportunities that present themselves as you take the first steps into the professional world. There are paths that lead to great money, others to globe-trotting, and even a few that will test your physical mettle. But, none come close to the exciting challenges that a career in civil services brings with it on each day of the service.

The Selection in Civil Cervices

The tests start way before you become a civil servant—in the best of circumstances, almost two years before. Why is this so? It is because, to step into the shoes of a civil servant, one must first face the Civil Services Examination conducted by the UPSC. This exam is regarded as one of the toughest in the world due to the extremely poor selection ratio.

The Service

The real trials are faced on the field, where you get to tackle the various problems in the country. A nation of 1.3 billion plus people spread across 2.4 million sq. km. will have the most diverse of challenges that a civil servant faces on a daily basis.

An IAS officer faces the hurdles of managing the administration of a district—be it in New Delhi or extremist affected jungles of Central India. The district magistrate must ensure that administration runs according to the laws of the land. They often work on very diverse issues. In an instance quoted by a DM, he was chairman of more than 140 committees in his district! An IPS officer on the other hand must be vigilant all around the clock as security is his concern.
