A 13-year-old Iowa cat was believed to be the first confirmed case of H1N1 in a feline. It appears the cat got the virus from humans. Two of the three people in the home also had H1N1.

At the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley, preventing the spread of illness is always a top priority. And with news of this first confirmed H1NI case in a cat, staff is even more diligent about making sure visitors follow the hygiene rules.

Oakley, a handsome 11-year-old minature pinscher mix, joined Animal Humane Society's Tracie Jacobson today to discuss the benefits of senior pets with WCCO's Angela Davis.

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month and AHS is taking this time to remind people who are thinking about adopting a pet to consider an older animal. We all know about the benefits of puppies and kittens, but there are great benefits to senior pets too.

Melman is a former stray who is now a much-loved senior dog at Animal Humane Society. In his short time with AHS, staff and volunteers have learned that he is a people person… or dog. He loves as much attention as he can get, but at the same time is quite reserved. Even though they don’t know where he came from or much about his history, it’s obvious that he aims to please. He knows basic commands and is more than happy to flash his charming smile.

Hundreds of dogs in need of new homes at AHS

Animal Humane Society is currently experiencing a high number of dogs available for adoption and is asking the public to consider adopting a dog from one of its five facilities. The high number of dogs is related to the decrease in dog adoptions in recent weeks.
