UK pay growth lagged inflation for the first time in two-and-a-half years in early 2017, underscoring the growing Brexit squeeze facing many households.

Excluding bonuses, earnings rose by 2.1% year on year, the weakest increase since July of last year and below economists’ expectations for a 2.2% rise.

That meant pay, adjusted for inflation, fell by 0.2% in the first three months of the year, the first fall since the third quarter of 2014.

The Labour party has made weak wage growth one of its main themes ahead of the 8 June general election which opinion polls suggest Theresa May is on course to win.

While wage growth is weak, there are other signs of continued strength in the British labour market.

The unemployment rate in the period between January and March unexpectedly fell to its lowest level in nearly 42 years at 4.6%. Economists polled by Reuters had expected the rate to remain at 4.7%.

And the number of people in work rose by 122,000, taking the employment rate to a new record of 74.8%, the Office for National Statistics said.

The Bank of England is watching closely for signs of a pick-up in wages that could add to inflation which seems to be heading for about 3% due to the fall in the value of the pound since the Brexit referendum and as oil prices rise.

So far the central bank believes there is little pressure on most employers to raise pay sharply which could feed a more permanent inflation problem.

Instead, the Bank has softened its previous forecasts for a rise in unemployment which it expects to stand at 4.7% this year, still above the level which it considers inflationary.

The ONS said workers’ total earnings including bonuses rose by an annual 2.4% in the first quarter of 2017, edging up from growth of 2.3% in the three months to February and in line with the forecast in the Reuters poll of economists.

The BoE expects wages to rise by 2% this year before picking up in 2018 and 2019.

Data released on Tuesday showed consumer price inflation picked up speed in April to hit 2.7% and many economists think it will reach 3% soon.

The ONS said the number of unemployment benefit claimants rose by 19,400 to just under 793,000 in April, slower than an increase of 33,500 in March.

The global human health impact of the diesel emissions scandal has been revealed by new research showing a minimum of 38,000 people a year die early due to the failure of diesel vehicles to meet official limits in real driving conditions.

Researchers have created the first global inventory of the emissions pumped out by cars and trucks on the road, over and above the legal limits which are monitored by lab-based tests. Virtually all diesel cars produce far more toxic nitrogen oxides (NOx) than regulations intend and these excess emissions amounted to 4.6m tonnes in 2015, the team found.

This led to at least 38,000 premature deaths due to heart and lung disease and strokes. Most of the deaths are in Europe, where highly polluting cars are the main culprit, and in China and India, where dirty trucks cause most of the damage.

The work also shows that, even if diesel cars did meet emissions limits, there would still be 70,000 early deaths per year. Excess NOx emissions are rising, the researchers found, and strict pollution controls need to be put in place to avoid the death toll rising to 174,000 in 2040.

“The consequences of excess diesel NOx emissions for public health are striking,” said Susan Anenberg of Environmental Health Analytics in the US and one of the team that did the research, published in the scientific journal Nature.

Former acting US attorney general Sally Yates said on Monday that she warned the White House on 26 January that then national security adviser Michael Flynn was “compromised” and open to blackmail by the Russian government.

Her comments to a Senate judiciary subcommittee hearing came after it emerged that Barack Obama had warned Donald Trump in November against hiring Flynn, who was forced to resign as national security adviser over his contacts with Russia after less than three weeks in office.

Testifying for the first time about her knowledge of contacts between the Trump camp and Moscow, Yates said on Monday that she requested an urgent meeting with the White House counsel, Don McGahn, after she became aware that the White House had made false public statements about Flynn’s contacts with the Russian ambassador to Washington, Sergey Kislyak.

White House officials including the vice-president, Mike Pence, had stated that Flynn and Kislyak had simply exchanged pleasantries and talked about arranging a future meeting between Trump and the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

It later emerged that the conversations were more extensive and included discussion of sanctions imposed on Russia by the Obama administration.

Yates said that she telephoned McGahn on the morning of 26 January, two days after the FBI interviewed Flynn about the contacts and had given her a detailed readout of the interview. She told McGahn she needed to meet him in person because what she had to say was so sensitive.

Yates and a senior justice department colleague met McGahn the same afternoon in a secure room in the White House and told him that statements made by Pence and other administration officials about Flynn’s behaviour were untrue, and that “Flynn’s underlying conduct was problematic in and of itself”.

McGahn called Yates back to the White House on 27 January and put further questions to her about Flynn. According to her Senate testimony, the White House counsel asked her: “Why does it matter to the Department of Justice whether one White House official lies to another White House official?”

“We explained to him that it’s a lot more than that,” Yates said. “We also said that we weren’t the only ones who knew this. The Russians also knew what General Flynn had done and that what Pence said was not true. The Russians not only knew this but they also likely had proof.”

McGahn also asked whether Flynn’s actions could lead to criminal prosecution and whether White House action against him would interfere with FBI investigations.

Yates said she could not speak about statutes under which Flynn might be prosecuted without revealing classified information about the investigation, but she told McGahn that any White House action on Flynn would not interfere with the FBI investigation as he had already been interviewed.

Lastly, McGahn asked Yates whether he or his staff could come to the justice department to review classified evidence of Flynn’s conduct. Yates consulted the FBI over the weekend and called McGahn back on Monday, 30 January, and said White House officials could come to the department to review the material.

She said she did not know if McGahn or his staff took up her offer, as that was her last day at the department: Trump fired her on the night of 30 January, ostensibly because she had refused to defend his executive order suspending entry for refugees and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries.

The Treasury would like to abandon the pledge. It was introduced by the coalition government to tackle pensioner poverty and prevent retired households from falling behind. But recent evidence suggests that on average, retired people have tended to fare better than low-income working households since the onset of the financial crisis.

The Conservatives believe that their commanding poll lead, and the fact that most people have less confidence in Labour’s economic competence, creates the political space for them to wriggle out of some of the most costly pledges in the 2015 manifesto.

Philip Hammond, the chancellor, created a stir last week when he appeared to suggest that the party would not repeat the sweeping promises it made in 2015 not to increase income tax, national insurance or VAT. He was forced to abandon an increase in national insurance contributions for self-employed workers, the centrepiece of his first budget, earlier this year after a backlash from backbenchers who felt that the policy breached the Tory manifesto pledge.

Former CBI chairman John Cridland used a recent report on the state pension age to argue that the policy should be dropped, and the work and pensions select committee also recommended an alternative without the 2.5% floor.

It also emerged that the prime minister may stick with her position that now is not the right time to withdraw from the European convention on human rights while the Brexit process is ongoing.

She said during the referendum campaign that she would like to withdraw
from the treaty, which is entirely separate from the EU and governs a
series of rights and freedoms.

But she dropped that ambition when running to be Conservative leader, saying there was not a majority for such a move. A Tory source suggested there had not been a change in her view since then.

27년만에 공개된 미인도 방탄 유리안 작가 표시도 없이 전시

가짜다 진짜다 말이 많았던 고 천경자 화백의 미인도가 4월 18일 세상에 모습을 드러내어 화제가 되고 있습니다.

1990년 마지막으로 전시된 이후에 27년만에 공개 된것이며 1991년 고 천경자 화백이 위작을 주장한 이후 26년만에 공개된것이라고 합니다.

미인도의 진위가 명확하게 나지 않은 상태로 논란이 되고 있는 점을 고려 하여 아무런 설명 없이 전시 하였으며 방탄 유리 속에 그림만 덜렁 내걸었다고 합니다.

기자들을 대상으로 미인도의 전시 설명도 진위에 대해 최대한 언급을 피했다고 하네요.

미술관 고문변호사인 박성재 변호사는 작가를 표현 하지 않는 이유에 대하여 유족측에서 성명표시권에 대한 문제를 제기 하고 있는 상황적인 측면을 고려 하여 표기 하지 않았다고 합니다.

미인도는 1990년 열린 움직이는 미술관 기획전에 전시되었을때 천경자 화백이 자신 작품이 아니라고 하면서 논란이 되었으며 그때 당시 전시회가 전국순회적 형식으로 하였기 때문에 실물이 아닌 복제품이 전시 되었습니다.

이를 본 천경자 화백이 복제품을 보고 자신의 작품이 아니다는 의심을 품기 시작하여 원본을 요구 하였고 1991년 원본을 보고 난 이후 위작이라고 주장을 하였습니다.

지난해 고 천경자씨의 유족들이 국립현대미술관장들을 고소 고발 하면서 위작 논란은 더욱 심화 되었고 일각에서는 위작 진위 여부가 가려지지 않은 상태에서 그림을 공개 한것이 문제가 되지 않느냐는 비판도 나오고 있습니다.

검찰은 12월에 미인도가 진품이라고 하였지만 현재 유족측은 항고를 한 상태라고 하네요. 일반 관객들은 4월 19일 부터 미인도를 관람 할수 있으며 관람료는 무료라고 합니다.

전국노래자랑 사회자인 송해가 방송통신심의위원회로 부터 4월 12일 품위유지 의무를 위반하였다고 전국노래자랑 측에게 권고 조치를 하였습니다.

송해는 전국노래자랑 방송중에 초등학교 2학년 A군이 여자 가수 노래를 부르길래 여자인지 남자 인지 알아보자는 식에 고추 한번 만저 보자고 하여 이 상황 떄문에 품위 유지 위반 권고 조치를 받게 되었습니다.

예전 같으면 송해 나이 정도의 사람이 고추한번 보자 만져 보자 해도 아무렇지 않은 일이 였으나 지금은 시대가 달라져 참 위험한 행동이고 일반인이 하더라도 요즘엔 법적 위법 행위에 해당되어 정말 나이 드신 분들은 장난 삼하 하다간 법적인 문제로 까지 커질만한 일이 되었습니다.

방송통신위원회에서는 송해의 행동에 대해 젊은 세대는 절대 이해 할수 없는 정서이기 때문에 송해가 아무리 국민 MC 이긴 하나 주의와 환기가 필요하다는 점을 빌어 품위 유지 위반으로 결론을 내었다고 합니다.

저부터도 어릴적 동네 어른들에게 장난 삼아 많이 당했던 고추 한번 보자 고추 한번 만저 보자에 당했던 세대 인데 이젠 세상이 바뀌었으니 절대 하지 말아야 할 장난 그 이상이 되어 버렸습니다.

하필 A군이 여자 노래를 선택하여 부르는 바람에 애드립으로 나온 액션이였는데 이번 사건으로 계기로 방송상으로는 좋은 교훈이 된것 같네요.

피의자 박근혜 전 대통령 검찰 출석 국민께 송구 스럽다.

비선실세 최순실과 엮여 결국 탄핵을 당한 피의자 박근혜 전 대통령이 3월 21일 검찰에 출석을 하여 2ㅣ간 30분 가량의 조사를 받았으며 점심 식사 이후 또 오후에 계속된 조사를 받을 예정이라고 합니다.

이날 피의자 신분인 박근혜 전 대통령은 검찰에 출석 하기전 기자들과의 인터뷰에서 송구스럽게 생각한다는 짧은 말을 남겼으며 이에 대해 박영선 의원은 그렇게 짧은 말만 하고 검찰 청사로 들어간것에 대하여 시대교체가 되어야할 이유라고 비판을 하기도 하였습니다.

오늘 피의자 박근혜 전 대통령은 조사는 점심 시간 이후 계속 재개되며 워낙 많은 확인 내용이 있어서 이르면 저녁 아니면 밤늦게 까지도 조사를 할 예정이라고 합니다.

이번 피의자 박근혜 전 대통령 검찰 조사에 가장 핵심적인 내용은 미르 재단 사유화와 삼성과의 뇌물 수수혐의 그리고 최순실의 이권 도모 등 여러가지 전반적인 사실관계를 밝힐 예정이라고 하네요.

박근혜 전 대통령 측에서는 장장현 그리고 유영하 변호사가 번갈아 가며 그녀의 방어를 돕고 있는 중이라고 하네요.

과연 결과가 어떻게 나올지 모르겠지만 이제 대통령이 아닌 신분으로 조사를 하기 때문에 결국 구속까지 말이 나오지 않을까 조심스럽게 예측을 해봅니다.

이번을 계기로 해서 정말 구시대적인 대통령이 아닌 박영선 의원이 말한 시대교체가 분명히 생기고 변화된 한국의 비전을 열어주는 그런 큰 변화가 생겼으면 좋겠네요. 그러기 위해선 박근혜 전 대통령의 죄가 있는대로 밝혀지고 그만큼의 죄값을 받는 모습이 있어야만 가능할것 같네요.

힘찬 피로골절 진단 이유는 무리한 다이어트 때문

그룹 B.A.P 멤버 힘찬이 과도한 다이어트로 인해서 피로 골절 진단을 받고 현재 휴식중에 있다고 합니다.

힘찬이 피로골절이 온 이유는 다름 아닌 컴백 전에 7킬로 그램을 감량을 하였고 그렇게 된 이유는 주변 사람들이 너무 살찐것 같다는 말을 하여 무리하게 다이어트를 하게 되었다고 고백을 하였습니다.

또한 이번 그룹 B.A.P 컴백을 하면서 자신이 다이어트 가장 중점을 두었다고 이야기 하였습니다.

힘찬은 3월 14일 생방송 더쇼 공연을 한 이후 가슴의 통증을 느꼈고 이에 병원을 찾았더니 피로골절이라는 진단을 받았다고 합니다.

병원 관계자 말에 의하면 외부 충격으로 생긴 부상이 아니라 너무 심한 체중 감량과 과도한 연습량 때문에 늑골에 실금이 가게 된것이라고 하였습니다.

이에 소속사는 힘찬 피로골절 진단으로 무대에 오르긴 하겠으나 안무는 없이 서 있는 상태로 참여 하는것으로 결론을 내렸다고 하네요.

암튼 얼마나 연습하고 얼마나 과도하게 다이어트를 하였으면 뼈에 금이 갈 정도로 했을까 싶네요. 정말 아이돌로 살아 간다는건 너무 힘들어 보입니다 .ㅜㅜ

홍라희 삼성미술관장 사퇴 이유는?

삼성전자 이건희 회장의 아내이자 삼성미술관장을 맡고 있던 홍라희가 관장직을 3월 6일 사퇴를 하였다고 합니다.

홍라희는 삼성미술관장직을 사퇴 하는 이유로 일신상의 이유 때문이라고 하였으며 구체적인 이유는 밝히지 않았고 후임 역시 결정 되지 않은 상황이라고 합니다.

홍라희는 삼성미술관장을 2004년 부터 맡아 왔고 13년간 운영을 하였는데 갑작스럽게 사퇴를 결정 하게 되자 미술계에서는 삼성 특혜 의혹 수사 이후에 이 부회장이 구속 그리고 미래 전략실 해체 등등 삼성의 내 외부 적으로 위기감이 고조 되자 심리적 압박감에 삼성미술관장 자리를 내려 놓는게 아닌가 관측 하고 있습니다.

홍라희는 지난달에 이재용 부회장의 구속이 결정 되자 참담한 심정이 들어 모든걸 내려 놓고 싶다고 주위의 사람들에 말한것으로 미뤄 볼때 삼성 이건희 회장이 병으로 누워 있고 이재용까지 그렇게 되니 모든걸 그만 두고 쉬고 싶었던게 아닌가 싶네요.

홍라희 관장은 2008년에 삼성 비자금 및 불법 경영 승계 사건으로 잠시 호암미술관 관장직과 삼성 문화재단 이사직을 잠시 물러난적이 있고 2011년에 또 다시 복귀를 하였습니다..

홍라희가 삼성미술관장을 사퇴 하면 후임으로 여동생이 받을것 같고 우선 사퇴 이후 정신적인 요양이 필요해 보이네요...

내년에 대선 또 치르면 또 다시 그 대통령에 맞춰서 또 무언가를 해야 하니 우리나라 대기업들 가족들도 권력을 쥔 사람 눈치보고 신경쓰고 골치가 아플것 같네요..
