ILOVE: A day in Sunny Tropea

There is no denying the weather lately has been pretty off ... with June around the corner and spring fever has barely reached the city I decided on this rainy day to revisit Tropea in Italy. Last summer I joined my sister and her family on a trip to Calabria in Italy where we stayed in Cardinale, explored Serra San Bruno and visited Tropea for a day. It's great to daydream and remember but dear weather gods we really need spring/summer to come to New York City!

A dream just crossed past her mind. She remembered their meeting for the very first time.
So many days have come and gone. But the sight of art always gave her a feeling of being home.

Felix Nadar (Gaspard-Félix Tournachon - 6 April 1820, Paris – 23 March 1910), a French photographer who was one of the most creative, original and daring artists and entrepreneurs of the 19th century.

He was a Leonardo of photography, capturing the world from above in his own tethered balloon, and the catacombs and sewers of Paris from below, as possessor of a patent for artificial-light photography. He was a well-known journalist, novelist, and caricaturist before his photography studio brought him fame. An ardent republican, Nadar portrayed the greats of the era, and garnered gold medal after gold medal at the World's Fairs.

Sandy Exhibit at New York Photo Festival

SANDY: Devastation, Document, Drive Exhibit

at the powerHouse Arena

Exhibition: February 4 – March 1

Reception: Weds, February 13, 7-9PM

The day after Hurricane Sandy hit New York City I went out with to capture the aftermath. I walked from the Lower East Side all the way up to Upper West Side and it seemed that the city has been divided in two. Above 39th street life seemed to be normal but everything below would turn pitch black after dark. The only damage in my part of town happened to be a week without power but countless people lost so much more.

When I heard about SANDY: Devastation, Document, Drive Exhibit at The powerHouse Arena I decided to take part to support those that lost so much more than words can describe. I guess good deeds pay off as my images have been selected for the exhibit and I will be traveling to The powerHouse Arena for the reception night, FEB 13th 2013. On that note come out to support the art and help others to get over the damage that SANDY left behind.

I spent the day by the seaport pier and looked into the ocean when it all became clear. We are quick to forget what happened before unless damage turns our lives upside down. But for those that suffered the greatest grief, they're fighting the cold and trying to preserve their memories. But the sunshine returned with another beautiful day to create new memories that are here, hopefully, to stay.

Centennial at Grand Central Terminal

It's time to celebrate the Centennial of Grand Central Terminal! After 100 years of being largest train station in the world plenty of photos have been taken over time so to make this celebration very special I decided to go with Daguerreotype. And for those of you that were not aware, the wall of Grand Central have a secret to spare (the Secret of Grand Central in The New York Times).

Nancy "Nan" Goldin (born, September 12, 1953, Washington, D.C.) is an American photographer. She is an example of an artist who works at the most intimate level: her life is her work and her work, her life. It is nearly impossible to discuss Goldin's photographs without referring to their subjects by name, as though the people pictured were one's own family and friends. It is this intimate and raw style for which Goldin has become internationally renowned. Her "snapshot"-esque images of her friends -- drag queens, drug addicts, lovers and family -- are intense, searing portraits that, together, make a document of Goldin's life. Goldin herself has commented on her photographic style and philosophy, saying, "My work originally came from the snapshot aesthetic . . . Snapshots are taken out of love and to remember people, places, and shared times. They're about creating a history by recording a history."
