Who invented the Steam Engine?

"James Watt!"

The inventor who changed this world and played an instrumental role in bringing about the Industrial Revolution.

“You definitely agree with me, don't you?”

But, what if I tell you a completely different story retold by Boldrin and Levine (Against Intellectual Monopoly).

James Watt was a prolific inventor. A brilliant man who got the idea of allowing steam to expand and condense in separate containers while repairing a small Newcomen steam engine. In 1768, he applied for a patent after doing a series of improvements. Soon he made an alliance with the rich industrialist Matthew Boulton, who secured an act of Parliament extending his patent until the year 1800.

In the name of economic freedom, the great statesman Edmund Burke spoke eloquently in Parliament against the creation of this unnecessary monopoly – but to no avail. After his patents were secure and the production started, Watt devoted a substantial portion of his energy blocking off rival inventors.

In the 1790s, when a superior Hornblower engine (compound steam engine) was put into production, Boulton and Watt sued Jonathan Hornblower and brought him down. Many new improvements to the steam engine were made, but they never saw the light until 1804 when the Boulton and Watt’s patent expired, as none of those inventors wished to incur the same fate as Hornblower.

The unfolding of events after Watt's patents expired was quite surprising. Not only there was an explosion in the production and efficiency of the engines, but also steam power came into its own as the driving force of the Industrial Revolution. Steam engines were modified and improved leading to the development of the steam train, the steamboat, and the steam jenny over the next thirty years. The high-pressure steam engine was one the key inventions whose development was blocked by Watt’s strategic use of his patent.

In most histories, even the one which we read, we buy into the "myth of the lone inventor" - an idea that creates a simple and entertaining narrative, like - James Watt was a heroic inventor, responsible for the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Although, these facts suggest an alternative interpretation of the history.

Was Watt’s patent a crucial incentive which triggered his inventive genius, as the traditional history suggests? Or did he push back the Industrial Revolution by a decade or two through the legal system he used to gain a competitive advantage?

Is the current system of "intellectual property" – patents and copyrights – a necessary evil that provides an incentive for invention and creativity? Or are they just unnecessary evils, the relics of the past when authorities granted monopolies to favoured bourgeois?

It is up to you to decide.

As an engineer I was always taught that our purpose is to solve real life problems, making this world a better place to live.

Through this article I am not trying to spread a libertarian propaganda, raising my voice against intellectual property, dogmatically disregarding consequences, insisting on principles of building a utilitarian society at any cost. But to show you that there exists an alternative way to push technology forward for a sustainable future – Open Design.

Open design is a form of co-creation which leads to the development of machines, systems and other physical products by using publicly shared design information using both free and open-source software (FOSS) as well as open-source hardware (OSHW). James Bessen and Alessandro Nuvolari wrote in their recent research paper, Knowledge Sharing Among Inventors: Some Historical Perspectives, how aggressive patenting had put an end to the period of extensive knowledge sharing which could be traced back to the 18th and 19th century. While many outstanding individuals made important contributions in the development of various technologies, the histories that we are exposed to, focus exclusively on “heroic inventors” which is often misleading and incomplete. The term "Open Design" was not coined in that era, but its essence was quite prominent even back then. They strived towards a common goal – pushing technology forward collectively for the greater good.

Today this idea of open design has been taken up by several groups and individuals. Marcin Jakubowski is one such US based farmer and technologist. After completing his PhD in fusion physics from University of Wisconsin, he realised that he lacked practical skills to solve pressing world issues which had rendered him more or less – useless. So, he started a farm in rural Missouri and spent his time learning the economics of farming.

He bought a new tractor. A few months passed, then it broke.

He got it repaired and a few months later it broke again.

Then pretty soon, he was broke too.

He realized that to start a sustainable farm and settlement, the truly appropriate, low-cost tools he needed just didn't exist. So he started building tools that were robust, modular, highly efficient and optimized, low-cost, made from local and recycled materials that would last a lifetime, not designed for obsolescence. He tested those tools and found that industrial productivity could be achieved on a small scale. He published the 3D designs, schematics, instructional videos and budgets on a wiki. Contributors from all over the world joined his movement and started a group - Open Source Ecology with a mission to create an Open Source Economy, an efficient economy that increases innovation by open collaboration. They identified the 50 most important machines that takes for modern life to exist - tractors, bread ovens, circuit makers, brick press, etc. Then they set out to open source the set of blueprints, called the Global Village Construction Set, allowing anyone to build their own tractor or harvester from scratch. So far, fourteen of the fifty machines have been designed, blueprinted, and prototyped, with five of those reaching the documentation stage. And now the project is about to enter the high velocity development phase.

It is very important to understand that hardware plays a pivotal role in the Open Design philosophy. An open source hardware is a component or device that has been licensed to allow anyone to examine, duplicate and modify as you wish. In the past few years, this openness in hardware has definitely taken a leap. Projects like RepRap – 3D printer and Arduino – microcontroller are some of the perfect examples of open hardware projects. It is important to focus on hardware because it is hardware that can change people's lives in a tangible way.

The idea underlying Open Design can be well summarized by Nikola Tesla who wrote way back in 1934 - "The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter — for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way. He lives and labors and hopes."

Today technology advancement has reached such a level that individual invention happens with the help of hundreds. Even Issac Netwon will agree to it - "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."

Open platforms like OpenXC has already entered our vehicles. Motorola's Project Ara, the smartphone of the future, is also completely open-sourced. You are already living in the decade of Virtual Reality which coupled with open Brain Computer Interface will offer you a choice to remain in your everyday life or to enter the Matrix, giving you the ability to freely manipulate the simulated reality of the Matrix to manifest these abilities as various superhuman powers.

What started as the open source software movement decades ago, empowering people, is now finally inspiring and even extending its arms to support open source hardware, open product development, open enterprise and open design. There are lessons we can learn from these collaborative trends as we enter the next step in the evolution of both technology and economy. But first, we need to ask ourselves whether we have the courage to grab this opportunity and march ahead together?

If we do, then definitely we are about to enter the next phase of human evolution.

Round 4: CSER Matching Phase

30 candidates were selected for the final round which was the CSER matching phase. In this phase the principle investigators of selected PhD project proposals (hereafter PI's) and the candidates for the resulting PhD positions who were pre-selected by Shell (hereafter candidates) had their very first interaction.

1. Some background information
Permanent staff at Dutch universities and academic institutes was invited to submit research proposals for PhD projects, from which a number of excellent proposals was selected.

In parallel, STCB selected a pool of approximately 30 'high potentials' who want to obtain their PhD in the Netherlands and to afterwards continue their career at Shell in Bangalore. The application process for PhD students included various interviews at selected locations in India.

2. Aim of the matching process

The aim of the matching process is to establish an optimal match between the selected project proposals and the pre-selected candidates from the aforementioned pool of 'high potentials'. A successful match will result in a granted research project for the PI, a signed employment contract between the PhD student and FOM in the Netherlands, and a letter of intent from Shell for a job in Bangalore after completion of the PhD. The first PhD students can start in their projects in the Netherlands early 2014.

3. The matching process

The matching process took place in November 2013 according to a tight time schedule with distinct steps:

Step 1. November 1: FOM will send candidates this document ('Rules of play'), as well as a link to the selected research proposals and the information form to be completed.

Step 2. November 7: the candidates will read these proposals and send FOM their ranking of at least five proposals by order of preference. Simultaneously, the candidates will return the completed information form and a copy of their passport.

Step 3. November 8: FOM will send the curriculum vitae and original motivation letters (that were sent to Shell at the original application step) of all candidates that indicated preference for a certain project proposal to the corresponding PI.

Step 4. November 12: the PI's will, by e-mail, invite a number of their candidates for an interview by Skype (or phone), providing a proposal for a date and time (taking into account the time difference) and a Skype name. These interviews will take place from November 12 to November 26. The PI's will also send a motivated rejection by e-mail to all candidates they do not wish to invite for an interview. The PI's will simultaneously inform FOM on this first selection. The candidates shall respond to the PI's invitation (accepting or declining) by 18 hours after receipt of the PI's e-mail.

Step 5. November 12 – November 26: interviews. These interviews will form the basis of the priority lists (rankings) that the PI's will make of the candidates interviewed. Please note: as there will be many combinations of projects and candidates to be considered it will NOT be possible at this stage that PI and candidate come to a final mutual agreement. The PI will not make comments to any of the candidates on his/her preferences.

Step 6. November 26: the PI's will inform FOM of their priority list by mail. PI's should also clearly indicate which candidates (if any) they do not deem suitable. Please note: including a candidate on the priority list implies the PI will accept this candidate even though he/she might not be the highest ranked candidate.

Step 7. November 26: the candidates will inform FOM about their preference of projects (in the form of a priority list). Candidates should also clearly indicate which projects (if any) they would not like to work in. Please note: including a project on the priority list means the candidate will accept this project to work in even though it might not have his/her highest preference.

Step 8. November 29: on the basis of the priority lists of both PI's and candidates FOM will decide on the final match and inform both PI's and candidates. Please note: FOM commits itself to make an optimal match based on mutual preferences as much as possible. In the case of concurring preferences by multiple candidates, in this phase of the matching process the preference of the PI precedes. In the case of concurring preferences by multiple PI's, the PI precedes of whom the project proposal obtained the highest priority during the proposal selection process.

Step 9. FOM will send the selected candidates a labour contract in duplicate for the selected PhD project under supervision of the selected PI/responsible team leader. The candidate should return one copy of the labour contract to FOM after signing for agreement by January 1st 2014. In addition Shell will draw up a letter of intent of Shell for a job at Shell Bangalore after a successful PhD.

Please note: by signing and returning the FOM labour contract the candidate sincerely commits him or herself to join the project of the PI in the Netherlands. Please make sure there are no obstacles to do so before signing the contract! FOM and Shell expect the candidate to turn down any (later) competing offers after signing a labour contract.

Step 10. Following acceptance of the job offer by the candidate, FOM will grant the research proposal and will send an official granting letter to the PI. This granting letter will be valid only for the matched candidate. FOM will replace candidates rejecting the offer 'automatically' by the next best match. If none of the ranking candidates accepts the job a suitable agreement will be worked out.

6)    Dr. H.J. Bulten - Wireless Seismic-sensing networks - Nikhef(Geosciences) + Computational Science
7)    Prof. J.J.W. van der Vegt - Computing Seismic Waves with Minimal Pollution Error - Mathematics of Computational Science
8)    Prof.dr. W.A. Mulder - Fast elastic wave equation modelling and inversion - Computational geosciences

15)    Prof.dr. M. van Hecke - Evolutionary Algorithms Designing Responsive Metamaterials - Applied Physics

I applied for the projects [1-9] and was selected for the projects [1-6] for the Personal Interview Rounds with the individual professors.

The next 6 interviews were woven around each project. The questions asked generally boiled down to these:

•    Tell us about yourself? Why do you want to pursue a PhD?
•    Did you find the proposal interesting? Why do you want to take up this project for your PhD?
•    Why do you want to join our group?
•    What are your expectations from the PhD project? There will be some managerial responsibility. Are you willing to take them up?
•    Why do you want to come to Netherlands for a PhD? Why not US?
•    Few questions to gauge your skills/competency.
•    Discussion on the proposed projects.
•    Do you suggest some improvements to the proposal? (Missing timeline for validation studies, experimental work, etc.)
•    Questions pertaining to your Master’s Thesis.

So after the process ended, we had to send a final priority list. I was selected for the project - Simulation of proppant transport for shale gas production. It was a very interesting project which had a lot of industrial scope.

Few weeks later I declined the offer.

Round 3: Shell Recruitment Day

There was a long wait and finally I was invited for the Shell Recruitment Day in Oberoi, New Delhi. It lasted from 8.00am to 5pm.

The assessment day involved case study undertaken individually and as a group exercise, with a break for lunch in the middle. It was divided in 5 stages:
1.   Case Study
2.   CBI (Technical & HR interview)
3.   E Tray
4.   SRI
5.   GD

During the interview and assessment process your academic credentials and results will play almost no part in determining whether you're a suitable employee for Shell (except the Technical interview part). These are only really important for getting past the online application stage. Your assessors will predominantly focus on analysing your CART skills.

Stage 1: Case Study

We were divided into groups of 6 and a case study was handed over to us. I estimate that around 60-70 people got to this round all over India.
The business case study was based on a fictitious setting, a fictitious island called Opana (with 3 countries – Bouka, Yana and Goura). The case focused on one country Bouka which was ruled by the – Central Party. Shell has some activities and plan to increase the activities there by taking over more oil exploration, bidding, etc. You had to think about various issues like research and development, safety, environment, work force, corporate social responsibility, financial data, etc. A lot of information was provided to you like official reports, emails, press release, charts, graphs, etc. and half hour was given for the preparation.

The key question that you need to prepare was your recommendation for one of the 3 projects that Shell needed to undertake in that region keeping all aspects in mind – company finances, competitors, people, stakeholders, etc. So you have to read emails and headings and try to catch the key words. Think about increasing capacity of plants, ensuring safety, work life balance, local work force, satisfying the govt, stakeholders, environment, etc. also care for shell employees. You will have to think about the budget allocated and hence see how you plan for short, medium and long term like:
1) Balancing Global standardisation with local leads
2) Meeting Global energy needs whilst paying respect to the environment
3) Implementing Health, Safety, Security and Environmental controls
4) Keeping up with market innovation and technology.

There were some environmental concerns like endangering a rare species of whale in that region whose mating activities were hampered due to the noise generated by oil drilling. Your need to look and try to come up with some figures. You were also supposed to think about the short term and long term strategy and what would be the broader implications of your decision.

The three projects were:
1.   Oil Exploration Software – This software accessed the data to predict the possible oil locations. This project promoted partnership with the local technology institute. This project had a larger application if successful in the long term for exploring other oil fields around the world.
2.   Biodiesel – Help the society and environment by developing Biodiesel with the help of locally grown crops.
3.   Drilling noise reduction – The government had mandated to do this project if the company wanted to do deep sea oil rigging in order to protect the whales.
Read the entire case carefully and make your decision.

Stage 2: CBI

This round was not associated to the case and comprised a technical and HR round purely accessing your CART abilities:
The technical round stressed on your projects, applications, problems you encountered and solved, why you were interested in this program, etc.
The HR round had some of the following questions:
- A time when you had to explain a complex or difficult issue to someone?
- Example when I have had to work hard to achieve a goal? Proudest achievement?
- Example of a time when I have had to work in a group and faced differences with another member?
- Example of when I have engaged or built relationship with different people/groups/cultures and my success depended on it?
Answer these questions wisely.

Stage 3: E-tray

This round judged your organizational capability and crisis management. You were one of the project managers of Bouka East Project and the entire task was simulated in the form of an email system.
The crisis situations came in the form of the emails which you had to respond to. There was a time limit so you were required to be quick and smart. Some sample emails are as follows:
- Worker strike in one of the location due to low wage pay.
- Fraud made by a supplier.
- Green Party notice against the company activity (This political party is opposite the Central Party and is very vocal about the environment and people’s concerns and it wants to put a stop on the activities of Oil companies).

Stage 4: SRI – Self Reflective Interview

A very polite lady (probably her major was psychology) took my interview. It was based on how I approached the E-tray questions. What all things I took into consideration while answering those questions? How did I perform according to myself? Was there any change of approach midway? If so why? What did I learn from this exercise? Will I perform it better if I take E-tray again?

She will be polite, but she will ask counter-questions which will nail you. You need to escape her intelligently, and yes politely. No anger/aggression/confusion, just remain calm and composed, as your fate is in her hands.

Stage 5: Group Discussion

This was the only group activity. The GD group comprised all 6 members of your group and it was observed by around 10-12 Shell officials, who were familiar as they came in one round or the other previously to interview you.

The atmosphere was tense. There was a white board. Few markers lying on the table. And one sheet given to each member which had 2 points that can help you in the GD. There were 6 different set of points, each for one member.

A video was shown which showed the upcoming crisis as the Central Party had been voted out in Bouka and Green Party was in power. The group had to come up with ways to handle this situation and identify the stakeholders whom they need to address and how – Shareholders/Board members, Green Party, Environmental Groups, Local peoples, Employees. You need to handle the situation very carefully as you are being observed by the Shell officials. Speak up your points clearly. Make use of the white board before someone else picks up the marker. It is a gamble which I played. I went to the white board and my group members listened to me. They followed me. In your case they might continue the discussion and reject you by just dictating the points and making you write. So it will be your call. The safest thing to do is to put forward your points consistently.

Round 2: Technical PPT + Telephonic interview

Around 3000 applications were submitted and 200 were shortlisted for this round.

If successful at the initial screening stage and on the basis of your Technical presentation which you submitted, candidates will be invited for an interview. This will be a telephonic interview. A Shell assessor or trained business manager will conduct the interview.

The interview and all stages of assessment will focus on Capacity, Achievement, Relationship Building Skills and a Technical assessment which is carried out at the final assessment stage, Shell use the acronym CART to represent these qualities.

Within the inital interview only C, A and R are assessed. Achievement and Relationship Building skills are assessed via standard interview questions: "Can you given me an example of a time when...?"

You cannot prepare for this element and it is actually counter-productive to try to do so since the assessment measures the candidate’s ability to think on their feet, undertake analysis, demonstrate commercial awareness and operate with an unfamiliar topic.

It was split in three parts.

Part 1
A couple of general questions about your career preference, why you opted for this programme?

Part 2 – Competency/Capacity Questions (Technical PPT)
The main questions were followed by a variety of probing questions aimed at finding out specific things you did in your Thesis/Project you submitted for their evaluation. The probing questions tried to capture the usual Situation -> Task -> Action -> Result or Context -> Action -> Result. Make sure you know your stuff inside out plus what you would change wrt to your actions and what you learned about yourself.

Round 1: Online Assessment

You are required to complete an online assessment as part of your application. This is designed to help you know Shell better and vice versa. During this journey, they show you around some of the different Shell businesses that help create better working solutions for their customers around the globe.

The online assessment consists of two parts: a Competency Based Questionnaire and a Cognitive part with a decision making task and a problem solving task. You will need to successfully complete the first part before proceeding to the second.

The information provided below is for the first e-assessment:
•    In this part you are asked to complete a Competency Based Questionnaire. These questions ask you to rate yourself against a number of behaviors.
•    The Competency Based Questionnaire consists of 18 sets of statements to rate in approximately 20 to 30 minutes. You are not timed during this assessment.
•    You will need a computer with a reliable internet connection to take the online assessment.
•    Before you start the assessment, please make sure that you are somewhere safe and quiet, and that you have paper and a pen at hand. You may also want to have a dictionary within reach in case you want to look up any words.
•    No specialist knowledge is needed to answer the questions and you should not rely on any previous knowledge you have of Shell as this may lead you to a wrong answer.

After you submit the first e-assessment you receive a link to proceed to the second e-assessment:
•    This part of the assessment consists of two tasks: a decision-making task that assesses how you respond to common situations that Shell graduates may face, and a problem-solving task that assesses your capacity for solving numerical problems.
•    The decision-making task is not timed, but the problem-solving task has a set time limit of 18 minutes. In total, the test should take approximately 45 minutes to complete.
•    During the decision-making task, you can save your progress at any point and revisit the test by re-entering the same link that you will have been sent to access this page. However, as the problem-solving task is timed, you must complete this part of the test within the time frame set.

In this blog I will detail the entire enrollment process of Shell-PhD programme which I went through last year. Applications invited for fully sponsored PhDs in Computational Sciences at Universities in The Netherlands followed by employment at Shell Technology Centre in Bengaluru, India.

Round 0: Online Form
You are required to complete an online form and submit it at the Shell Recruitment Portal. It is very important to keep your CV ready and think over each and every question mentioned in the form. I have enclosed my response below to some of those questions.

* What is your motivation to do a PhD in the area of computational sciences applied to the energy sector? (Maximum 1250 Characters)

People's well-being, industrial competitiveness and the overall functioning of society are dependent on safe, secure, sustainable and affordable energy. The scale of this challenge requires consolidation of research and innovation. Being a polyglot programmer, I firmly believe that programming is just a toolkit to solve real world problems. During the coming decades, there are likely to be major changes in energy systems throughout the world as efforts are made to meet the growing demand for affordable energy and reconcile demand with the need to effectively address climate change. How will it be possible to supply a rapidly growing world population with energy in ways that are economically, environmentally and socially acceptable? Fostering research in the energy sector will undoubtedly be an important step on the way forward with the results of this research used to support innovation and I want to be an essential part of it. Currently in my Master's Thesis I am working on Energy systems based on phase changing materials which is one of the upcoming sources for alternative energy and eco-friendly air conditioning. I always want to be at the cutting edge of scientific discovery and I want to passionately pursue PhD the area of computational sciences applied to the energy sector as it will have a direct impact on our society and give me a challenging opportunity to achieve something significant and make a difference.

* How will your past experience (academic curriculum, research background, knowledge of specific computational methods) help in this PhD programme? Any other aspects you would like to highlight in this regard? (Maximum 1250 Characters)

As far as my knowledge of computation is concerned I have completed all computational courses offered by my department - programming and numerical methods for engineers; finite element methods in engineering; and numerical heat transfer and computational fluid dynamics. I have a very strong programming background as it is my passion. For my exceptional contribution in inculcating and harnessing the programming culture in my campus, I was awarded the prestigious Science & Technology Excellence Award. Also I am highly academic and research oriented and have done computational projects which had a significant impact in real life - from providing remote experimentation platform for remote areas to automating entire simulation workflows to make engineers 100 times more productive. I have an insight that High Performance Computing will have a major impact on our future technologies so I ventured into that domain on my own and not just learnt it, but also organized the first supercomputing contest of India on the PARAM Yuva grid. I would like to mention that I am a self-motivated person whose driving force in life is perseverance, learning and applied research which makes me one of the best candidates for this PhD programme.

* Given an option to write a thesis proposal in the area of computational sciences, do you have an idea which you can briefly explain? What is your motivation behind the idea? (Maximum 1250 Characters)

Thermal energy storage is a technology under investigation from the early 80’s. Since then, numerous new applications have been found and a lot of work has been done to bring this technology to the market. Nevertheless, the materials used were mostly investigated 20 years ago, and the research has led to an improvement in their performance under the different conditions of the applications. In those years a significant number of new materials have been developed in many fields other than storage and energy, but a great effort to characterize and classify these materials has been done. Taking into account that thousands of materials are known and a great number of new materials are developed every year, I propose to pursue modelling and simulation of the phase change phenomenon of these various PCM materials in a Thermal Energy Storage unit. And also come up with an algorithm to find the optimal material suitable for use, combining multiple objectives and restrictions of use, to evaluate the most used engineering materials for applications in thermal energy storage and also considering different parameters, such as thermal properties, mechanical behaviour, price, availability, recyclability, CO2 footprint, etc. My current master's thesis is the motivation behind this idea as it would not just require computation but also a deep understanding of the physics behind the problem.

* What were you most excited about in any of your research projects in the past? (could be an experimental result, a theoretical breakthrough etc) (Maximum 1250 Characters)

Quite recently I was working on Nano-enhanced Phase Change Material simulations. I got a first-hand experience of research and made certain keen observations which were really exciting and had tremendous scope of improvement. It was then I realized that perseverance and innovation is of utmost importance in research and it enables you to probe deeper into unraveling the mystery behind the problems and find a solution which can change the world for the better.

* Why would you want to study in The Netherlands? (Maximum 1250 Characters)

I want to pursue my PhD in The Netherlands because it has proven to be a true pioneer for discovering inventive solutions to everyday problems. Creating a large part of the country by reclaiming land from the sea shows their pragmatic approach. I could also see this approach when it comes to education as it invests a huge portion of its GDP towards funding research and education. It clearly shows their dedication towards moving ahead in all spheres by providing an environment which is both innovative and creative. Also the strong connection between Dutch higher education institutions and the business world (Shell) will create possibilities for practical assignments and internships which will prepare me for a promising career in an international environment. Dutch culture is a unique blend of liberal thinking combined with national traditions. The Netherlands is a highly tolerant country, with outstanding social programs and where empowerment of the average person is championed. The Dutch education system is interactive, student-centered and focused on teamwork, which makes it easy to meet other international students. The Dutch professors are highly respected and this respect is a national virtue that characterizes The Netherlands. Doing my PhD in The Netherlands is a once in lifetime opportunity and I want to definitely avail it.

* Why do you want to work for Shell in India? Where do you see yourself in 8-10 years from now? (Maximum 1250 Characters)

Since the inception of this programme last year, I had already come to know about the state-of-the-art Computational Centre of Excellence set up by Shell in Bengaluru. Since I entered my college I had shown tremendous inclination towards solving problems in engineering via computation. Shell is providing me a great opportunity by showing me the path I always wanted to tread on. It was my dream to do cutting-edge Computational R&D and I want to thank Shell for making it come true.
8-10 years from now I see myself as a senior member of the R&D team, leading my own team of computation and data scientists, solving some of the most challenging problems and putting the India R&D centre on the Global map as one of the best places for Computational Research and Development.

This book is woven around one of the most controversial crypto currencies of our time - BITCOIN. Bitcoins allow you to make a secured money transaction without exposing yourself and remaining anonymous online. This book battles the good and evil side of this crypto-currency in form of a thriller ride which leave you craving for more.

Aditya runs a gaming company Indiscape with the help of Sundeep. Indiscape is struggling as they are unable to replicate the success they had with their flagship online game, in their upcoming venture Townsville. They fail to understand the gamer's psychology, to make it short. He also heads the tech company eTios which provides a critical support to various banking firms of the country, especially NYIB - New York International Bank. While the chairman of NYIB Malvika slips off a highrise building and commits suicide, FBI is busy investigation a big shot crime in US of someone who has links with the POTUS. The finance minister of India gets caught in this turmoil and it looks as if it is an open and shut case. While the FBI was busy with their investigation, a terrorist group unleashed havoc in America which sends the FBI on a wild goose chase to catch the person behind the admins of Cotton Trail (a fictional version of the real life Silk Road, an online market operated as a Tor hidden service, such that online users are able to browse it anonymously and securely without potential traffic monitoring). They discovered that this black market website is fueled by Bitcoins. Aditya’s son Varun enters the scene as a genius who knows the in and out of the online gaming industry and turns Indiscape’s figures upside down before another disaster strikes the company. Meanwhile, the FBI investigators plunge headlong into the shady world of Bitcoins and the Dark Net, where websites like Cotton Trail exist for illegal transactions—drugs, sex and weapons. This brings the FBI to Mumbai where this book gets a few more unexpected twists and ends in a killer way which leaves you craving for more.

The book gets you hooked and makes sure that no page is left unturned. The author leaves clues all along which makes you guess the mastermind, until you encounter a new twist which takes the story to a whole new level. Kudos to the author. The writing style is new as each chapters last for 2-3 pages and cover places all over the globe. Sensitive topics pertaining to cyber-crime have been dealt well and the author has made sure to simplify things to spread awareness among the general masses as this book is really close to reality – The things mentioned can happen!

Who's got the poker face? Who's the mastermind? What will happen to eTios, Indiscape and NYIB? Will FBI be able to unravel the mystery behind the Dark Net and catch the admins of Cotton Trail?

“Where am I?” Aryan said, his voice groggy. His mouth had a metallic taste and he was thirsty. The voice echoed. Was he drugged?
“Where am I?” the echo said.
It was so dark that he could barely see his shadow. The darkness hid the dimensions of the hallway. It was definitely big as his voice echoed.

“Why is it so damp in here?” he wondered. That echoed too. He must have spoken aloud.
“What am I doing in this dungeon? Is anybody here?” he tried to look around.
There was a movement in the shadows. Something stirred the air.
He was sitting on his knees, holding something in his right hand. It was tightly gripped.
He tried moving his arm, but it was futile. His entire body was stiff as if it was not under his command. The horror petrified him.

He sniffed.
A circle painted in blood enclosed him. He could smell it.
He felt a strange turbulence in air from all directions.
The faint shadows started converging at the circle.
In a few seconds, he was surrounded by hooded creatures.
“You want to sacrifice me? Do it fast!” he said, with false bravado, his stomach fluttering with panic.

Whispers, a strange chant, he could barely make out the words.

“Hail Darkness,
Within you reside,
Cleanse yourself,
Shatter this bond,
And release your shadow.”

Crik.. Crik.. Crik .. There was a sudden jerk in his bones. Aryan’s right hand was now close to his throat. A knife firmly gripped. He was pale. His body was rejecting any impulse conveyed by his brain. He had no motor control. He slit his own throat in one clean stroke and fell forward. His eyes could faintly see the creature hiding under hood in front of him, those brilliant blue eyes.
“Cy…” his voice came in a gurgle as life ebbed away.
“The ritual is now over.”

“Wake up pal.”
“Cyrus!” Aryan said, surprised that he was able to speak.
“Are you alright dude? It doesn’t look you were dreaming of a girl.” Cyrus asked in a worried tone.
“Yeah Nothing. It was just ...” He stopped and looked at Cyrus. His face certainly bore a resemblance to the hooded figure.
“No, it can’t be him. He is my best buddy. I would have known,” he thought and smiled.
“Will you continue your story pal?”
“It was a dark place. A ritual was in progress. A blood sacrifice …. ”
“Where Count Dracula took over your body and killed you. Ha Ha ..” Cyrus interrupted.
“It isn’t funny!”
“It seems you lost too much blood. Hospitals are macabre places with blood in pouches, corpses in cold storage. Do they have zombies walking the hallways?” Cyrus pointed to the blood pouch attached to a drip.

“Sleep, dude. The Count is in Transylvania if he ever lived. Shall we parcel Malik to Transylvania to catch him?””
“Yeah, good idea,” Aryan said with a smile and closed his eyes.
Cyrus left the hospital ward.
“I hope you are not the one .. Cyrus .. I hope so.” Aryan muttered and went back to sleep.

Jennifer was worried. Something was bugging her. She opened her laptop and googled – Shekhar, Cyrus, Tara, Aryan … That was it! She made a note and called her Uncle who lived in Kochi.
“Hello!”
“Hello Uncle!”
“Jennifer Mole. How are you?”
“I am fine uncle. I have something important to tell you.”
“Yes Mole, tell me.”
“Not over phone uncle. I have sent you a message. The hash key is SCAT.”
“I will read it beta. Take care.”
Jennifer hung up the phone.
“Urgent .. going to Kochi .. c u soon” - She sent a sms to Cyrus.
As she was checking out of Hotel Tulip Star, she saw someone familiar waiting for her in the hallway.
“Going somewhere ..” Cyrus said.
“Yes. I am going back to Kochi.” – Jennifer picked up her luggage and starting darting out.
There was a sudden jerk in her arm. Something was holding her back.
“I won’t let you go!” – Jennifer looked in his blue eyes. A chill ran through her bones as Cyrus fixed his eyes onto hers.

Malik’s phone beeped.
He read the message, kick started his Bullet and within 15 minutes he was standing in front of Aryan’s apartment. He wondered how he had missed interviewing Aryan when he was investigating Roohi’s case.
He took a skeleton key and jimmied the lock. “Why would Cyrus search this place?” he asked himself.
The house was turned upside down. He entered the study room. There was no computer, TV or any medium of entertainment. Just an old clock with immobile hands hanging on the wall. A couple of chairs were scattered in the room near a table. Bookshelves with some books on them, others thrown on the floor near the shelves. He wore gloves and started picking up the books and reading the titles.

Not the usual kind of books that a young man reads, thought Malik. He drifted towards the study table. Aryan’s notes and research papers were scattered all over the place. Six copies of the best-seller Mind Freaks by Aryan …. was also kept on it. Malik called his driver. Together both of them gathered all the notes and the books into neat heaps. Malik’s phone beeped but he ignored it. Both the driver and Malik took Aryan’s studies to the car and left.

We were strolling along the edge of the backwaters of the Kovalam beach, a mile long crescent shaped paradise. This white sandy beach offered an endless sight of coconut trees. The atmosphere was sensual and our souls were longing for freedom from conventional restraints.

An old Vizhinjam Lighthouse was eerily standing on a rocky promontory. Its intermittent beams was rendering the beach with an unearthly charm. With this high rock promontory and a calm bay of blue water, this beach paradise created a unique aquarelle on such a moonlit night.

Her long flowing sundress,
Hair floating with the breeze,
Shimmering light falling on her dusky skin,
She was glowing like an angel, or was it like Madam Dracula, considering her taste for black lipstick?

She was not like other women, soft and angelic. This girl had a bite. And Cyrus discovered he had a taste for the unconventional. He wanted to experience the bite.

Jennifer, his chance meeting with her had been brief and full of promise. He wanted to explore more. Would he ever meet her again.

He stirred restlessly and went back into the dream …

And lingered on the butterfly tattoo on her right arm. He bent down to kiss the arm and she turned, those kohl smudged eyes naughty. Will she kiss me, he thought. She smiled and bent her face, her expression giddy, mischievous, and seductive all at the same time.

Oh my God, I am in love ...

“Uthiye!”
“Bhaiya, Uthiye!”
“Wake up Cyrus Bhaiya! Our plane has landed.”
Cyrus woke up with a start. Little Roohi was standing on his lap.

“Roohi get down now. The plane is about to land in Mumbai, buckle your seat belt beta.” – Tara grabbed the little girl, gave her a hug, holding her close to her heart. She was still scared, protective, the momentary pang of nearly losing her daughter fresh on her mind. She would never let it happen again.

Roohi held Cyrus’ hand while they were checking out of the airport. She felt that finally she’d found an elder brother to look after her, to give her company.

“Cyrus, why don’t you come to our place? I’ll introduce you to my husband and we can have dinner together.” asked Tara.
“Sorry Ma’am, but I have to attend a wedding tonight otherwise my dad would be furious.”
Tara shivered thinking about Darius.
She was tempted for a moment to tell Cyrus about the bond they shared.
She shook her head. No. Not yet. May be never.

“Here’s my card. I’ll come and meet you, li’l champ, someday.” Cyrus handed over his card to Roohi who tucked it safely in the little purse she carried.

He smiled as he saw the careful way she put the card away. He ruffled her curls and said, “Okay. Now I have to leave. My driver is waiting. See ya. Bye.”

Tara gave him a tight hug. “Thank you for saving my daughter’s life. She is the most precious thing I have got.”
“Maam, you are lucky to have a loving family.”
Cyrus bid farewell and walked away, wearing his earplugs.
Tara smiled. One day Roohi would be older and she would do the same. She stood there watching him walk towards the exit until he got lost in the crowd.

Someone tapped her shoulder.
She turned.
“Shekhar!” Tara turned pale. She was surprised to see him at the airport. He normally forgot to pick her up.

Shekhar had a furious look in his eyes. Tara, completely unaware that she was the cause of his annoyance began to tell him about the entire event. “You know in Jaipur this young man …”

“Just stop it Tara. Enough is enough.” He shouted at the top of his voice uncaring about the scene he was creating. “At least you should have been careful not to carry on in Roohi’s presence.”

The fight lasted all the way home. Once they reached the flat, Tara walked into the bedroom and locked the door. Shekhar sat down at the desk and stared at the computer.
Roohi stared at the locked door and then at Shekhar’s face, grim in the light which the computer screen emitted.

Roohi sadly went into her tiny room and curled up in bed. She hated to be back home. No one loved her. Maybe she was the cause of all that fight.
She loved her parents. Maybe if she went away, they would be happy.
Maybe …

Cyrus went home unaware of the strife his presence had caused in Tara’s family. They had a beachfront property, nothing but the best for his father. The huge house was empty. He was used to being alone, that did not bother him. He went to his room where the card stood prominently on the table, with a short note from his father, “9 pm, in your best suit. Don’t be late. My secretary will send you the gift.”

Yes Boss, he thought with a wry smile.

The Bawa family seemed to be important to his dad, he briefly wondered why. Then he dismissed the thought. He did not want to know. It was best not to know, that way he could live his life without getting involved in DD’s plans.

He got into bed and slept.

Consequently he reached the wedding around 10 pm. The party was in full swing. The hall was tastefully decorated. The tables laden with food and waiters were circling around, with trays of alcohol.

He walked to the stage, handed over the gift and picked up a glass of white wine and found himself a chair at an empty table. Normally he timed his presence well. Two glasses of wine, a small snack, three photos for the wedding album and he could leave.

He took a sip and was pleasantly surprised. The wine was excellent, just the right degree of coolness and it was dry. The way he liked his wine. May be he could stay for a third glass. In a slightly better frame of mind he looked up and saw svelte figure drawing close to him.

“Hi” – she said softly.
He looked up. He could not recognize the woman but the eyes seemed familiar.
“Yes?” he said.
“We met at Kochi,” she said with a smile.
The smile was very familiar.
“Jenny! Jenny with the black dry blood lips! Jenny the vampire girl,” he said with a laugh.
“I don’t have fangs,” she said, with a chuckle.
“They would look good on you,” he said. His evening had just gone from boring to excellent.

Kalpana-1 is the first dedicated meteorological satellite launched by Indian Space Research Organization using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle on 2002-09-12. Originally known as MetSat-1, the satellite was the first launched by the PSLV into the Geostationary orbit. On February 5, 2003 it was renamed to Kalpana-1 by the Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in memory of Kalpana Chawla—a NASA astronaut who perished in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

The satellite features a Very High Resolution scanning Radiometer (VHRR), for three-band images (visible, infrared and thermal infrared) with a resolution of 2 x 2 km, and a Data Relay Transponder (DRT) payload to provide data to weather terrestrial platforms. Its mission is to collect data in layer of clouds, water vapor and temperature of the atmosphere.

और पाना यह जहान है।

फिर एक दिन एक प्यारी परी ने उस बहती नदी के किनारे,
इस बूंद को अपने हथेलियों पर उठाया,
और मेरी इस भागती जिंदगी में,
एक गहर ठहराव आया।

आज जब कोई पूछें मुझे -

TA 202 Mid Semester Examination

Mentioned below are some short humorous incidents that happened over a period of one and a half hour.

I was silently roaming at the back of the lecture hall like a ghost.
I noticed three dudes cheering and talking in the last row.
"Kyun laundo, kaafi kush dikh rahe ho tumlog. Aakhir baat kya hai? Settle ho gaye ho kya."
"Sir, seating arrangement ke hisaab se baithe hai. Aap cheating karne dijiyega na?"
"Mujhe toh yahan 'cheating' arrangement dikh raha hai. Mil jhul ke kaam karna. Taqdeer tumhare saath hai."

A guy used to give me a stare whenever he got stuck at some question.
Again.
And again.
And again.
It was high time I confronted him.
"Tum gay ho kya laundey. Kya main bahut sundar dikhta hoon?"
"Nahi sir, bas atak gaye the sawaal pe."
"Abey agar atakte ho toh bagal ke paper ko dekha karo. Humko dekhne se thodi na solution mil jayega."
"Thik hai sir."
Aur achanak se uske shakal mein aayi is muskurahat ko dekh mera dil paseej gaya.

A cute girl raised her hand.
Like a vortex causing a whirlpool,
withdrawing water all around,
Invigilators from all corners of the room,
Poured their heart and soul to save this damsel in distress.
A bakra was needed.

"Ankit come here!"
I was summoned and ordered to meet the instructor-in-charge in L-7. All this labour, just for one cute girl. But an order is an order, and I had to carry it out.
I went and got scolded instead.
And when I returned to her, she spoke the magical words - "Sir, doubt nahi tha. Samajh aa gaya."

"Sir, OARS mein mera section C-14 hai aur sir jo mail bheje usme C-9 likha hua tha. Toh paper mein kya likhe?"
"Tumhaare tutor kaun hai?"
"Nahi pata sir."
"Class jaate ho?"
"Nahi sir."
"Ek kaam karo .."
Eagerly, he lent me his ears, "Haan sir, boliye .."
"Dono likh do. Tumko benefit of doubt jaroor milega."

I picked another unique piece next.

Another chap raised his hand.
I undertook a voyage floating through a score of rows.

A shock he got, I could very well understand.

"Haan sir." He said in a muffled voice.
"Yehi hota hai. Main tumhaari peedha samajh sakta hoon. Jo theek se padhaya nahi jaata hai, exam mein wahi aata hai. Code nahi banega on spot. Na isme logic hota hai aur na hi proper syntax. Bas rat ke aana hota hai book ka example, jo tum karna bhool gaye."

And then there was one, who preferred to sleep peacefully as if he had found heaven on earth.
I stood beside him, watching the droplets of saliva falling from his mouth.
He woke up.
"Yaar room pe jaake so jao. Accha neend aayega."
"Sir ek ghante baad mera VIVA hai, agar room pe gaye toh phir uth nahi paayenge."

Then I saw something unusual.
Another cute girl whispering to her companion to show her the schematic of the Electrochemical Machining process. But, her companion didn't even buzz.
She betrayed her.
It was Treachery.
It was Blasphemy.
Paap hai yeh.

I approached her stealthily.
"Oye, cheating kar rahi hai?"
She turned and said in a mesmerizing voice - "Naaahiii siiir."
"Dekho yaar tumhaare saath dhoka ho chuka hai. Aise thodi na cheating hota hai. Woh kuch question kar rahi hai, tum kuch aur pooch rahi ho. Strategy banana padhta hai. Lekin yahan tumhaare saath gaddari ho chuki hai. Toh agle baar se be careful. Pick a guy he will always help you."
And her smile faded.

I glanced into the answer sheet of the traitor. There she was, documenting the CNC code. Who on earth does that. Her neat and tidy booklet reminded me of someone.
"Sir, yeh lijiye. Ho gaya mera."
I flipped the pages.
"Choti Jaipuria tumko toh pura number milega. Yeh toh mera bhagya hai ki mujhe shakshaat Mataji ke booklet ke darshan ho gaye."

Half an hour to go and only a lone warrior was left behind, fighting his battle.
"Launde, jung khatam ho chuka hai. Hathiyaar daal do."
"Haan sir, aap thik keh rahe hai. Yeh lijiye mera paper."
"Toh is jung mein haare ho ya jeete ho?"
"Sir, lag toh raha hai ki haar chuke hai."
"Koi baat nahi haar ke jeetne wale ko baazigar kehte hai. Endsem mein fir milenge."

English Bites by Manish Gupta: Book Review

English Bites is a completely novel way of learning English and improving your vocabulary. Manish Gupta has taken a completely different approach which I had never come across before. He has weaved 1000+ words around his story - The struggle and determination to improve his English which was an essential part for shaping his career.

Each chapter of the book represents a phase in his life which he narrates in a humorous fashion and not just combines it with some lessons in English, but also presents various interesting facts. This book is definitely a fun way of learning English and I recommend you to give it a shot and I am sure it won't just improve your vocab, but also there will be times when you will see yourself rolling on the floor laughing when you will read some gems hidden in this book.

According to the author this book can be used by candidates of CAT/GRE/XAT/GMAT, those who wish to develop a better command over English, and any language enthusiast. Personally, I feel it should be read by everyone as it is definitely worth the time you spend on it and you will definitely end up gaining something in return.

A small leap into the future - Leap Motion controller review

So finally I got my hands on this gadget - LEAP MOTION.

Those who are not familiar with Leap Motion -

"The Leap Motion Controller senses how you naturally move your hands and lets you use your computer in a whole new way. Point, wave, reach, grab. Pick something up and move it. Do things you never dreamed possible."

So this tiny device, which comes with a huge price tag of $127 (India), senses your fingers and lets you interact with your computer in a whole new way. I made a test demo video embedded below to show how this interaction takes place.

I tried testing it on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Windows 7 Ultimate. It failed to run on my 12.04 LTS (need to check it why?) and after going through some threads I came across that it works fine on 12.10 and 13.04. I spent quite some time running it on Shivanshu's Ubuntu (12.10 perhaps). It was working fine, but required good lighting for functioning accurately. But somehow Leap is not polished for Linux compared to Windows. On Windows it gives you more options for Tracking Priority (Balanced, Precision, High Speed) and you can even re-calibrate your device.

The Airspace Store kinda sucks for both Windows and Linux (Too few apps).

Now coming to the Leap SDK for Developers.

Well Leap surely has wooed us developers by providing SDK in Python and Javascript (both work really well). I can see Pygame hooked to leap in near future. But the star attraction is definitely the Javascript SDK. You can see countless possibilities of using Leap along with WebGL.

Hi Pythonistas,

PS: I will get a bit informal in today's report. Do forgive me for that.

Past 14 days have given me the best coding experience of my lifetime. After doing rigorous research I had formalized my problem statement earlier and started working on it. I realised the true intricacies in my problem when I started searching for methods by which phase change simulations are implemented. I had to change my earlier timeline and jump to my project problem directly. This field is a relatively new field and the algorithms have been developed surrounding the legacy SIMPLE algorithm by Patankar. From Brent, A.D., Voller, V.R. and Reid, K.J.(1988) to Chakraborty, P R and Dutta, P (2011), people have developed the enthalpy update scheme for accounting phase change keeping Patankar's algorithm as the base. I was familiar with SIMPLE algorithm earlier so I have developed a phase change solver for SfePy using Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations (Revised) or SIMPLER algorithm which is much more robust than SIMPLE algorithm.

You will get an output dir containing the vtk files which can be viewed using
./postproc.py <file>.vtk

The entire group can be loaded in Paraview and you can get the animation.

The code has been validated for the melting gallium experiment performed by Gau and Viskanta(1986) & Brent et al.(1988).

You can see that the code is following the trend and the difference is due to the slight change in thermophysical properties of Gallium taken in the code which might be different while performing the experiments.

The ﬁnal problem accounting convection-diﬀusion along with phase change has been deﬁned below along with the governing equations and validation case studies.

Problem
Heat transfer in the processing of materials involving solid-liquid phase transformations (melting and solidiﬁcation) is commonplace in such ﬁelds as metallurgy, crystal growth from melts and solutions, puriﬁcation of materials, and solidiﬁcation of metals. The associated density gradients in a gravitational ﬁeld can induce natural convection ﬂows. Convection in the liquid phase inﬂuences the process in two diﬀerent ways, one of which is beneﬁcial and the other of which can be detrimental. During melting convection increases the overall transport rate and, hence, the growth rate of the new phase, which is desirable. On the other hand, during solidiﬁcation convection decreases the growth of the new phase and also seems to aﬀect the morphology of the solid-liquid interface adversely. The nature of the solid is largely determined by what occurs in the vicinity of the solid-liquid interface. The heat release (absorption), density change, and other processes that take place in the vicinity of the transformation front result in nonuniformities along the front that cause its shape to change. The resulting density gradients in the liquid generate buoyancy-driven convection that can aﬀect the transport of heat, constituent chemicals, and the growth rate.
The physical domain considered is shown in the ﬁgure. The vertical side walls of the enclosure are maintained at uniform temperatures, while the connecting horizontal walls are adiabatic. The govering equations are written for the entire domain assuming constant thermophysical properties, Boussinesq approximation, laminar, incompressible, and Newtonian two-dimensional ﬂow. The solid-liquid interface motion due to volume change upon melting or solidiﬁcation is neglected through the assumption
