Just then, Sam heard a loud knock on her front door. She sat still, thinking maybe the knock had actually been on the apartment door next to hers. An emaciated old hippie named Skip lived there, and he received all manner of strange visitors. It was not uncommon for one of them to knock on Samantha’s door by mistake. When Skip wasn’t hiding behind his dark curtains, he spent most of his time sitting in a lawn chair on the stoop smoking nonfiltered cigarettes and petting his elderly cat Mrs. Kush Kush.
The knock came again. No, that was definitely on her own door. Who in the world could that be? She sucked in a breath as she remembered Henry and his bizarre statement about knowing their future. Could he have found out where she lived? Not that it would be hard. Samantha was pretty sure you could find anyone you wanted on the internet. The knock came yet again, a little more insistent this time. Still, she didn’t move. It was Sunday, almost noon. She wasn’t expecting anyone. This had to be some stupid door-to-door salesperson or maybe a religious nut just out of church and all fired up. Or it’s a crazy, psychic nut who’s obsessed with you, she added in her mind, choosing not to voice that out loud and somehow make it come true. Not that she was superstitious but why not play it safe, just this once? She wasn’t going to answer it. They’d go away in a minute.
The knock sounded for a fourth time, even louder this time. “Dammit,” she swore and threw the blanket off her body. She was annoyed enough now that she was able to tamp down any fear she might have been feeling a moment ago. Samantha lumbered up and stomped into the living room so loudly she probably made the pictures rattle in the apartment below her. She paused at the door and looked down at herself, noticing her breasts were about to come tumbling out of the top of the red shirt she’d been wearing the night before, which was stained and wrinkled. Her throat was on fire. Her mouth tasted like she’d eaten a raw dragon liver, and she could only imagine what her hair must look like.
Samantha yanked the shirt up as high as it would go. She briefly thought about quickly freshening up, or at least brushing her teeth, but then she might miss the chance to read the riot act to this jackass pounding on her door. And if it was Henry Hyena, she was going to make it perfectly clear that he was creeping her the hell out and he needed to stop. Sam was going to make this fool pay for dragging her out of bed—well, off the bedroom floor, anyway—on what should be a very relaxing Sunday. The knock came again.
Damn it! It’s my first day off in three weeks. I’m SO not listening to a sales pitch about satellite TV! This asshat is getting a piece of my mind!

Samantha unlocked the door and yanked it open. Everything she’d been planning to say froze in her throat as she stared up into the eyes of the man at the door.
“Nice shirt,” said Derek, grinning like a Cheshire cat. And Samantha vomited all over his shoes.

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this latest installment in the Chicago on Ice series! I always find myself claiming to have new favorite characters after each new story. The Bottom Line was no exception.

Hunter has been traded twice within a short amount of time, and doesn't have much time to basically save his NHL career. He also has to live up to his brother who hasn't faced the struggles that Hunter has. Taylor is also facing a big change in her life and has been putting a lot of pressure on herself to exceed her parents expectations. I think almost everyone has had similar fears of failing at something; I know I have. My heart really went out to Hunter, especially, and I took a big liking to him right away. His little quirks were so endearing and I liked how easygoing he was. I also appreciated how Taylor really grew in the story and how her mindset changed so much. I also adored her relationship with her brother and sister-in law!

The Bottom Line was such a fun read and a great way to escape for a while. I am really looking forward to the next story in Aven Ellis' hockey world!

My Thoughts:

I am a big fan of Lisa T. Bergren's River of Time series, and have read many of those books repeatedly. I love all of the characters, the plots, the settings, and the various aspects that made those stories unique. When I found out that she was coming out with a new YA series, I was so excited! Unlike, Bergren's other books that I have read, Keturah is not centered around time travel at all. It is strictly historical fiction. That did not deter me in any way, and I still found myself enjoying it.

Prior to Keturah, I hadn't read that much about the West Indies during the late 1700's. It was interesting to see what life was like there. While the book seemed historically accurate, many of the aspects were still sad, as much was focused around slavery. It is sickening to know that many thought that way and had such disregard for humanity. The light in this story was that there were those in the story who had different attitudes towards slavery and humanity.

As in her other stories, I found myself drawn to the characters. I appreciated that they were not perfect (personality wise) and that the main characters each had lessons that they had to learn about themselves. Keturah was dealing with a lot of things prior to coming to the West Indies. She had been hurt and betrayed. She ended up facing an emotional and spiritual journey, in addition to a physical journey across the ocean. Her sisters were adorable and I hope that we read more about them. Sometimes they seemed a little too perfect and sweet, so I am really anxious to read each of their stories to find out what issues they were really dealing with personally.

The romance in this story was captivating. I adored the two of them. While the romance was not rushed, per say, sometimes I felt that there was just a little something missing. I'd hoped for just a little more dialogue between the love interests, and for them to share more about their histories and themselves.

With that said, I really liked this story, especially the spiritual aspects of it. I am also interested to know what ever came of a few of the characters, and am really hoping that we find out in the next book, as I will be anxiously awaiting it's release.

My Thoughts:

Reality Blurred was another great story by Aven Ellis. I can always count on her to bring me a story that will uplift me and make me smile. This was no exception!

When we were first introduced to Maxime's character, I could not wait to get his story. There was something intriguing and mysterious about him. I loved that he was a bit of an introvert and a homebody (like me) and just wanted to hang out with his dogs. It didn't hurt that he spoke with a French accent either. I hoped that he would find somebody special and worthy. I was so glad to find that I really liked Skye.

Skye was such a sweet character, and I liked how she rose above her circumstances. Even though people could be so mean to her, she turned the other cheek and was kind in her responses. I don't think I could've done that to be honest. I definitely learned a couple of things from her!

Reality Blurred was a fast, fun read and kept me entertained. As always, I loved the hockey parts and could just imagine the play by plays. I'm looking forward to the next book in the Rinkside in the Rockies series!

There are a lot of books that I've read and loved. Then two...three weeks or a month will go by and I cannot even remember the main character's name of one of those books. Or maybe the plot has become a bit fuzzy. Part of that is due to age, and the rest is just me. Hey, I have a lot on my mind! ;)

I wanted to take the time to share my year in regards to books that I read and to give a final update on the challenges that I participated in.

I have challenged myself to read 75 books this year!

Other than the Goodreads challenge, I haven't decided on whether or not I want to join in any other reading challenges for 2018. As a mood reader, I kind of like having the option of picking up whichever book strikes my fancy. At the same time, I fell in love with adult contemporary romance this year and have found that I want to read even more historical romance novels. A huge reason for that was due to the challenges above.

If I do join in any other challenges for 2018, it will definitely be some kind of Arc/Netgalley challenge. I always find myself needing to catch up on those.

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this novella and read it all in one setting! How could I not when it was about one of my favorite fictional couples?! Costin and Sally have so much chemistry, and their teasing and banter is so cute! We get all that and much more in Forgotten Silence

This novella was a little more emotional than some of the other books in the Grey Wolves series. I was glad that the author didn't shy away from the subjects of depression and self loathing. They are horrible feelings that often stay with us even though we or others try to convince ourselves that we are loved and accepted. This story took us on a moving journey with Sally and we learn how she is coping after what she went through in The Burning Claw. I don't want to give away much more, but I do want to say that I liked how it was resolved. I love that Sally had others to lean upon and turn to, and they refused to give up on her. Costin in particular was amazing! I love his sense of humor and he had me laughing.

I can say that this ended up being one of my favorite books in the Grey Wolves series and I am very anxious to read whatever Quinn writes next!

My Thoughts:

Wow. This was intense! Dream So Dark is the second book in the Dream Makers series, which is a modern take on the Sandman legend. It takes place right after the first book, Dream of Me, left off. I have read all but one book by Quinn Loftis, and this is definitely the darkest and heaviest of all of her books. (Note that there is a disclaimer and there are some trigger warnings in the synopsis.)

Dream So Dark is Christian based, and Loftis gives us a glimpse of a spiritual realm where demons and angels influence humans. Most people don't see them, but sometimes feel their presence. There were parts of the story that made me incredibly sad and brought tears to my eyes, and I kept questioning why certain events happened. Where was the author going with this? I honestly don't think that I could have saw or handled things the way that Serenity or Darla did. I would have reacted quite differently. Just when I thought that I couldn't bear anymore, Loftis brought us out and showed us the light at the end.

I really liked that this book made me think and it gave me a different perspective on the way I view things, especially when it comes to challenges in life. How do I handle them? Do I turn inward or do I face them and try to see the silver lining?

I have grown especially attached to these characters and I am hoping for the best for them. There is one person in particular who has reached rock bottom, and I must know what will happen in the next book!

My Thoughts:

I have loved all of Aven Ellis' hockey contemporary romance books, and I am so happy that she decided to branch out and write a baseball themed series. Baseball is another one of my passions and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed Squeeze Play!

The characters were so endearing and lovable. I totally fell for Brody! He was relatable, down to earth, and sweet. I liked that he didn't feel like he had to have appear a certain way or acquire certain possessions just because he was a sports star. Yes, he was self conscious sometimes. He had a hard time getting through high school and was intimidated by some people. I've occasionally had those same feelings, however, and couldn't really blame him for that. Hayley was cute and quirky, and I got a kick out of her obsession with kitchen gadgets. I also adored her relationship with Dominik and Barbara. The older couple was so fun and had me grinning at their banter!

Squeeze Play was a great start to a new and different series, and will have you craving ballpark food like crazy. (Can I get some of those helmet nachos?) I smiled and chuckled my way though the story, and I enjoyed all of the baseball references. I am eager for this series to continue, and I cannot wait to read Katie's story!

My Thoughts:

I get really excited when Aven Ellis releases a new hockey romance book! Her stories are very character driven and I always finish each one having learned something new. Usually it's about a new career, product, type of food/drink, or simply a hobby. It's fun discovering something that I want to try or experience.

Playing Defense was all about Reese and JP's story. I just loved these two! Now, I may have mentioned this one or two hundred times before, but I have a soft spot for hockey defensemen. They are my favorite players to root for and I find that they don't always get the respect or credit that they deserve. With that said, JP was an absolute delight. He had all of these talents and seemed so perfect, yet he embraced Reese's quirks. It was nice to see that even though she was a model she loved food and was messy.

Playing Defense was a pleasant read and once again I finished the last sentence with a smile on my face.

My Thoughts:

After first reading the synopsis, I wasn't sure if I would be on board. I love historical fiction and have always found the steampunk genre to be fascinating, but I tend to shy away from mysteries. I just don't seek them out, normally. At the same time, I have enjoyed all of the other books that I have read by Quinn Loftis. Would I be just as captivated with The Alloy Heart?

The answer is YES.

I should not have had any doubts as I was hooked from page one! The story opens with a crime scene that Thomas and his assistant, John, are attending to. Right away we get two strong characters with great chemistry. They worked well together and balanced each other out. There was just enough humor, especially considering the gravity of their case. John Foster was rather charming, if I do say so myself!

The romance between Sophia and Jackson truly touched my heart. I was really rooting for Sophia, and I must admit that I fell hard for Jackson. I couldn't help it. Olivia was another character that I liked. She was cheeky, yet compassionate. I also admired that she was willing to step back, and reconsider how she viewed things.

The Alloy Heart had an excellent balance of everything- mystery, romance, and humor. One of my favorite things, and what I found especially interesting, was how history was 're-written'. Although the setting takes place in London in the late 1800's, it's a different London from what we learned about. A big part of it is due to certain discoveries and the influence of the Mechanic's Guild. That's where the steampunk element comes in.

The Alloy Heart leaves off with a big cliffhanger, and I am so eager and anxious to find out what will happen to these characters that I have grown so fond of. The next book can't come fast enough for me!

I listened to Voyager by Diana Gabaldon. I'd already read the paperback twice, but I really wanted to try the audio version. I had mixed reactions to it because I wasn't a big fan of the narrator. I still enjoyed it, as Voyager is one of my all-time favorite books.

I've listened to a total of 5 audiobooks. My goal was to listen to 5-10 audiobooks this year, so I've met that challenge. Go me! Everything else is just gravy.

My Thoughts:

It seems that I can seldom relate to many of the female main characters that I read about lately, especially in the New Adult genre. I had sworn off the genre (at least temporarily), but there was just something about the synopsis that beckoned me to give Nate a chance. I am really glad that I did!

I could definitely relate to Charlie (Charlotte), and thought she was a rather refreshing character to read about. She kind of reminded me of myself when I was in my early twenties. I, too, was painfully shy and unsure of myself. I didn't really know how to flirt or act around guys that I was attracted too. She also had strong morals and was especially close to her family. While I am not especially close to my family (unfortunately), I love reading about characters who are, and I am enthralled by the whole dynamic. I also loved that Charlie lived on her own, yet had a great group of friends to look out for her and vice versa.

Nate, himself, was a great character. He wasn't without his flaws or his demons, yet he was kind, patient, and quite romantic. I know that he probably wanted to go further (physically) with Charlie, yet he didn't push her.

If I had to criticize one thing about this book, it would be the nicknames. As a very short girl myself, I wasn't really a fan of Nate calling her names that addressed her height. I know he meant them as an endearment, but I had somewhat of a hard time getting past that.

Overall, this was a great start to a new series! I really liked the minor characters and even the the "villains" of the story. I am hoping that we will get to read more about Tucker, Holt, Naomi, and Halley in the upcoming books!

My Thoughts:

So, I have the biggest smile on my face right now. I really enjoyed Save the Date by Aven Ellis!
When we were first introduced to Collins Brady, I was really curious about her character. She seemed so kind and relatable, therefore I had to know why she put pressure on herself to appear a certain way at times. Then there was the whole situation with her ex-boyfriend. What exactly happened there?

I got all my answers and then some. I have to say- Collins (along with Aubrey and Lexi) is one of my favorite of Ellis' female characters. I loved her passion for horses and how she approached her job as an event planner. That's one of the things that I especially LOVE about these books. Ellis really does her research, and thus I get to experiences various careers and hobbies that I would have otherwise known little about. This includes the good and the bad parts of the jobs. I feel like can go to work with these characters and experience a day in their shoes, all from the comfort of my couch (ha!).

I am so so happy that the love interest was a hockey goalie! Although I really love my D-men (defencemen), I have a soft spot for goalies. They have one of the most competive jobs and they have to be on top of their game at all times. They also have to do so much in the way of conditioning and preparation (more than the other players). And let's face it, goalies are known to be...odd. So, that makes them really cool and intriguing in my book. Luca encompassed all of these things! Not only was he dreamy, sweet, and mature, but he had some of those quirks and he felt that pressure that NHL goalies face. He was believable. I loved that he didn't change overnight, but that he really had to come to tearms with what was important. I adored the chemistry with him and Collins.

Once again, Aven Ellis' storytelling has allowed me that escape that I desperately needed, and to submerse myself into the fantasy world I could only dream about being a part of. I am so sad that I have to wait a while for the next Chicago On Ice book. I can already tell that I am going to love Taylor's character (hello, nachos!!).

The Clean Sweep Challenge is only for the month of May, and it provides another incentive to try and catch up on some of those ARCs that you have received, and just haven't gotten around to reading. I know that I have fallen a bit behind, so I'm hoping this will give me the opportunity to catch up a bit.

TTT: Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book

Today's topic is all about those books that instantly go into the 'Not Happening' category. One thing that you may or not know about me is they I can be kind of ~~picky~~ particular about what I like to read. Fist off- I don't judge others for their reading choices. We should be free to read what we want to read.

Unfortunately, there are just some topics or subjects that I need a break from. There are other topics that don't interest me.

Blah blah blah...okay, here's my list, already.

1. Authors behaving badly. While I believe in the right to free speech, some authors take things a step too far (twitter, FB), and may not realize that they sometimes insult or ostracize some of their readers. Yes, we can say what we want, but our words can hurt and/or have consequences. Be nice.

2. He had a dark past...

While I might be very curious about what happened to create this brooding hero, I've seen this trope one too many times.

3. Millionaires.

Or millionaire businessmen. I see this a lot in synopsis (synopses?). I mean more power to them (not literally and no pun intended), but usually I just want to read about the average Joe.

4. Love Triangles.

If I'm surprised by a love triangle halfway through a really good book, that's one thing. If I know there is going to be one before starting a story, that's another.

5. Constantly insulting or stereotyping people/characters based on their religion, skin color, or political views. This is one of my biggest pet peeves.

6. A vague synopsis. You read a synopsis and still have absolutely no clue what the book is about. I'm not one who likes to go into a book blindly.

7. Books that are very hyped. I get my hopes up and then more than likely, I'll end up being disappointed or not liking it. Happens more often than not. Then again, I tend to stay away from books that have a really low average rating. *shrugs*

8. Okay, this is hard to explain. I love reading books about strong women or women who kick butt, and I seek out such books. I also like sarcasm. However (and this could be for men or women), I get irritated when authors confuse strength with characters who are downright malignant (for no good reason) or who throw out insults left and right. Then there are characters who insist they don't ever need help or advice, and do the opposite just to be contrary. Are these really the only ways to show strength?

9. Thrillers, mysteries, and horror books. Just not my thing, personally.

10. Multiple Points of View

My Thoughts:

After reading the synopsis for Geekerella, I could not wait for it to be released! I myself am somewhat of a Star Trek geek, as I grew up watching it with my own dad, just like Elle watched Starfield with her father. I also couldn't resist a Cinderella retelling. What a great combination!

I hate to admit that I found this story to be slow at times, and I really had to keep myself focused on what was happening. I think the biggest reason for this was that I did not necessarily like Elle- one of the main characters. I mean, I felt bad for her living circumstances, but other than that she seemed kind of...snobby and judgy. At least where Starfield fandom was concerned. I just couldn't really relate to her much. I much preferred reading from Damien's point-of-view, actually. I found him to be a very likable and nice, and I admired his determination to do his best.

Something that especially bothered me was the texting relationship. It just wasn't safe. Darien and Elle had no idea who each other really was and yet they kept texting each other. One of them could have been texting a pedophile or something!! So...the idea of starting a relationship this way (accidental text) bothered me.

Ok, with that said- I did like Sage! She had so much spark and personality. I also found the whole ExcelsiCon event to be pretty cool, as well. It made me want to attend some kind of Comic-Con event in the near future. Oh, and can I also say that this cover is super cute?!

I feel bad that I did not like this story as much as other people did, and it appears that I am in the minority. So if you are looking for a fun YA, contemporary that is based off of a sci-fandom, Geekerella just might be for you!

Unhinged by A.G. Howard

My Thoughts and Ramblings:

Unhinged is the second book in the Splintered series by A.G. Howard. In my experience, second books tend to be more of a miss than a hit. Fortunately, I found that I really enjoyed Unhinged for the most part.

Unlike in Splintered, where most of the story takes place in Wonderland, Unhinged mostly takes place in the human realm. I really enjoyed seeing how Rabid and Morpheus reacted to that. Especially Morpheus. Speaking of Morpheus, can I just say that I like him even more than I did in Splintered? He's not exactly the kindest or compassionate person. However, there is just something very alluring about him. He had so many layers to his personality, and I would constantly guess his motives and intentions. I am almost positive that he puts on a front in order to protect his heart, however. Ok, enough gushing about Morpheus.

Yes...there is a bit of a love triangle in this series, and normally I hate them. But for some reason, I don't mind it this time. I like Jeb, I do. I think he would do anything for Alyssa. But there was just something...off or missing about him. I can't put my finger on it. There were a couple of times that I wished he would have stood up for himself more. I don't know...I guess I just liked him better in the previous book.

As I said, I don't really mind the love triangle so much, and that's because there are so many other things to like about Unhinged, and the series in general. Howard is so creative, and I am just fascinated by all of her characters, descriptions, and just the whole ongoing plot. Then there were the revelations. A couple of the things that I learned made my jaw drop and another made me grin from ear to ear.

I am really hoping that we will see more character growth in Alyssa in the next book- Ensnared. In some aspects we already saw that. She does stand up for herself and she's coming to grips with her powers. At other times, she could be so impulsive or naive. Unhinged ends in a cliffhanger, and I have a feeling that we will see Alyssa reach new heights.
