Peng Chau Field Trip | Sai Kung Portrait Photographer

Back in February I was asked if I would like to participate in Art Fest week at Discovery Bay College on Lantau Island, and teach a group of 15-17 year old's about photography. Er hell yes! No holding me back.
When I lived in Hong Kong many moons ago, I used to live on Discovery Bay and the idea of going back bought many wonderful memories.
Peng Chau was our "go to hang out" in the summer at weekends, just a short boat ride from DB ; a tiny fishing village where there was one pub ran by an English guy. Of course 20 years later things have change just abit!

I met Gail who works at DB college and the students on the plaza. We walked down to the ferry pier to take the short ride over to Peng Chau. This was a great opportunity for me to grab some portraits of the students and have a quick chat on what I wanted them to get out of our day together.
The idea of this workshop was to get the students to see everyday objects with a photographers eye. Looking at composition, light and view point.

The field trip to Peng Chau coincided with the week running up to Chinese New Year. Food stalls were a profusion of colour and smell as were the temples.

this tickled me; the temple caretaker was using a flame torch to light the mosquito coils

I really enjoyed teaching the students how to get the most out of their cameras,; whether they had a pro DSLR or even an iPhone! At the end of the day principles of light and composition still apply!.

Next week I am doing it all again, this time for 60 students at ICHK where Izzy is a student. I cannot wait.

Autumnal Styled Bridal Shoot | Sai Kung Photographer

Before I left the UK back in November last year, I had planned a collaborative styled shoot; an Autumnal Bridal shoot. Very much out of my comfort zone, in general I do not photograph weddings. I wanted something a bit quirky and different for this shoot. Thanks to twitter and a tweet looking for suppliers who could help with my theme, I ended up with a pretty impressive group of individuals and businesses to help bring my vision to life!

So on a cold and rainy October morning, myself, Vivien (MUA), Sasha, Sydney, Jade (models), Ryan (second Shooter) and Emily the stylist, all gathered at The Sue Ryder hospice at Thorpe Hall in Peterborough.
My car was overflowing with cakes, biscuits, beautiful bouquets, exquisite dresses and stunning headpieces to be used on the day.

Just like a Hollister Advert | Sai Kung Portrait Photographer

As a mum to two girls of which one is a teenager, you kind of get used to the teen side of them, you know the moody side! The side that doesn't want to be in front of the camera. So when I got to photograph 3 friends all in their late teens, my expectations were not too great to be honest. I was expecting shy, embarrassed teenagers.

I was more than pleasantly surprised. Ellie, Alex and Will arrived dressed if they had stepped out of a Hollister campaign. There was no sign of moody shy embarrassed teenagers, but 3 teens who were more than just friends. It was a cold Octobers morning on a farm in Gloucestershire where the shoot was to take place. After hot chocolate to warm everyone else, Ellie, Alex and Will got straight into it, not a shy smile to be had anywhere!

In fact I had so much fun, trying to select a couple of images was proving too hard. So picture heavy post here!

I am now residing in Hong Kong, but for those in the UK who would like to book me on my return , I will be back in July shooting for 2 days only! I will be posting here and on my Facebook page dates.

Guild of Professional Photographers Photographer of the Year Awards | Sai Kung Portrait Photographer

About 3 weeks ago, I got an email from Steve and Lesley from the Guild of Photographers to say I had been shortlisted top 10 for the Portrait Photographer category award. To say I was chuffed and shocked is an understatement. Well Friday night was the award ceremony, which I could not fly in for as you can appreciate, and I found out I came 8th !
OMG I was so surprised and honored to be amongst friends and talented photographers. It was my first year and I am really chuffed to have come away with 2 silvers, 1 image of the month and 24 bronzes.
A huge thank you goes to Steve and Lesley for their on going support and for making the Guild such a friendly and supportive place to be. Thank you to Simon Young for being my mentor last year, and to all my wonderful clients who chose me as their portrait photographer.

Peter Pan Inspired Styled Shoot | Sai Kung Portrait Photographer

"Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it.”

I am a huge fan of dreamy whimsical styled shoots, I think its goes back to my days at college when I studied fashion and textiles, followed by my work as an Interior Designer. Styled shoots bring all those parts of me together! I am also a bit of a dreamer as well, and hark back to what it must be like to be a free spirited child, running through fields in the summer sun!
I grew up in flat in a town!

This shoot was an idea I had had for ages. It ended up being a much smaller shoot than my ideas of grandeur allowed! It was still a lot of fun, and my girls got to help on this shoot. Chief boy prop maker was Lilly, and Izzy was on flower duty and actually came along on the day of the shoot and was my assistant!
Armed with props and Victorian nightdresses our location for the afternoon was to be the beautiful Hitchin Lavender Fields.
My models for the day were the Harris's. Harvey and Francesca are both professional models, for Ollie this was her first time, and she was brilliant!

Harvey had a ball being my Peter Pan, and enjoyed being an explorer and adventurer for the day.

Its that time of the month when The Guild of Photographers announces the judging of the monthly competition. Every month I enter 3 images into The Guild of Professional Photographers monthly competition. I am really pleased to have achieved bars each month to date. This month I received 2 bronze bars. Working with a stylist | Hong Kong Portrait Photographer

I had great pleasure of working with Emily Daniel from The Daniel Partnership last month on a styled shoot without people!
We both love interiors and working outside using natural light. Our brief was to shoot indoor scenes in a country setting.

Emily and I had only met once previously at a woman's networking lunch, WIBN in ST Neots. We really hit it off and after meeting over lunch (well it just has to be done!), we decided we would like to work together.
On a beautiful sunny day last month we met at Brampton Woods with 2 cars full of what to some may have seemed like junk! See previous post here

New Pastures Green | Hong Kong Portrait Photographer

See the title of this post??? Yes you did read right, we are all packing up and headed off to Hong Kong in 2 weeks! EEEK.

Peter, my husband , has been offered an amazing job with a package we just couldn't say no too and in 2 weeks 1 day we are headed to Heathrow with most of our worldly goods packed in suitcases and a 20' container making our way to Hong Kong.

Its an extemely exciting journey, one to be honest I still have not come to terms with, and I am not sure I will until we have found our new home and the container turns up.
We will be staying in an apartment in a hotel whilst we look for a new house. Lots of site seeing for me and the girls :)

My business will be on hold for a few months whilst we all settle into our new home and surroundings. In March I will be launching a new brand with a new website, of which I am really excited about!

This blog will still be up and running, although my website will be down from mid November until March. I suggest you pop me into your RSS feed as I will be sure to keep you all update on our new adventures! In fact I am thinking of making Sunday's post a personal weekly look at our new life in pictures. Perfect time to start that 365 don't you think?!

In the meantime I have so many shoots to share with you all, to keep this blog going until March!

I am determined to be back Wednesday with a share from the style indoor/outdoor shoot I did with Emily Daniel at Brampton Woods.

Today my first born turns 12! Yep a big fat twelve! I have no idea where those twelve years have gone, they have flown but they hold so many wonderful memories. Thankful that I love taking photos as I can look back over twelve years of memories that my camera's captured.

Happy Birthday Izzy, you are truly growing up into such a beautiful girl, whom is loved by all that meet her xxxx

Babies | Cambridegshire Family Photographer

I have been spoilt rotten these last few weeks with bundles of beautiful babies coming to the studio.
There is nothing like a baby to brighten up your day and these gorgeous babies sure did just that!

When thinking about having your baby photographed, the best age for a newborn is no older than 14 days; this allows your baby to be molded for those cute poses and they still sleep loads!
Another great age is 6-9 months when they can sit up give you continous smiles and not crawl away in too much of a hurry!

I have recently purchased a new background and floor to fit with my shabby vintage style that I love. Being able to do some baby and toddler sessions from my home studio allows you and your baby to feel more relaxed and we are not hindered by the English weather. You can feed your baby in the privacy of my home and I provide tea and biscuits too!

What is inspiring me right now | Cambridgeshire Portrait Photographer

I love to be inspired by everything around me, by the seasons, textures, colours; if it makes me smile it inspires me.

I used to be a full time crafter, which means I was paid to play with lots of pretty papers and such! I know a great job. Being creative and finding inspiration all around me is just part of my everyday life.

I still have boxes and a noticeboard with tear outs from magazines, cards with words that inspire and colour palettes I love, but today my favorite pin board is Pinterest!
An online pinning board where you can pin anything you see form the web (with credit where credit is due!)

Beware it is so addictive, it has become my saturday morning passion, to sit with the iPad, a mug of coffee and loose an hour or so pinning!

Mills Family Moxley | Cambridgeshire Family Photographer

I have had the pleasure to have met Annie at a scrapbook retreat earlier in the year , where I had the great pleasure of taking her portrait photos. A keen scrapbooker and a regular at The Moxley Massive Crop, Lisa and Annie invited me up for the day for a mini portrait party after the lovely comments made of the photos I took of Annie.

Annie asked me if I would photograph her gorgeous family and newest member baby Henry.
Our location was the back of the local community hall, and this just proves you can make even the smallest and not very excited areas still work as a backdrop!

Top tips :
Look for some simple greenery or a brick wall even, as a backdrop. You want as little distraction as possible. Change your angles to avoid distractions. If you can see a dustbin or lamp post even in your view finder, move around, take from below, take from above.

Day 5 Paralympics | Cambridgeshire Portrait Photographer

Some of you may be aware that Peter, my hubby, has been working on the Olympics for the past 5 years. He has won health and safety awards and saved us millions of pounds on build projects. As the logistic manager for all 3 sites he has been responsible for every nut and bolt that has entered the stadium!
Once everything was completed he was then released to LOCOG and the duty nights manager for the park.
Like everyone, the girls and I had hoped he would be rewarded with some tickets for the games, but just like friends and families of the athletes we had to go through the same system as you and we didnt manage to get any tickets :(

Well that was until Sunday night when Peter came home with the news he had 4 day passes for the park! This allowed us access to all venues except the 3 main ones; Stadium, Velodrome and the Aquatics. We had such an amazing day, the atmosphere is electric.
we say football GB vs Ukraine and wheelchair basketball China vs USA, and Seb Coe even made an appearance on teh pitch at the football!

Here are a few piccies of our day...

Today we are off again but this time the Stadium, we are all so excited. Peter checked out our seats last night and we are situated front row of the 2nd tier, 100mt start line. Now you know what we will be kitted out in and where we are seated, maybe you could try and spot us tonight LOL!

I am mostly known for my children's portraits, which I love doing and have so much fun capturing little ones smiles and individual personalities. Studio Beauty Shoot | Cambridgeshire Portrait Photographer

One of my photography passions is Fashion and Beauty. I am learning all the time and hope one day I will actually get paid to do a Fashion shoot. At the moment I enjoy collaborating with other creatives bringing ideas to life.

This was a beauty shoot for Vivien Jones of Pretty Woman Makeup. I have been working with Vivien since January when she did the makeup for my Ice Queen/Black Swan shoot, we really hit it off and have become firm friends since.

Vivien was looking for high end beauty shots for her portfolio. I hired a studio I love working with , Saracen House in Milton Keynes and Vivien gave the very talented Creative Art Director for Toni and Guy, Carol Whamond a call and we had our creative team together.

I went through my contacts on Model Mayhem and came across Jess who I have been meaning to work with with and thankfully she was free.

After 4 hours Vivien and Carol had 2 very different looks achieved.

Styled Shoot | Cambridgeshire Portrait Photographer

Back in January I was part of Professional Photographers new series "Styled Shoot" and my Ice Queen/Black Swan shoot made it to print in the April Issue, a very proud moment for myself and the creative team that I worked with on the day.
Although I have blogged this shoot before on my old blog, I wanted to re blog and show you the behind the scenes video that Adam Scorey, Editor of Professional Photographer filmed.

The shoot was inspired by the Black Swan movie with Natalie Portman. On a pretty non existent budget, model call on Model Mayhem, and facebook for a makeup artist, this shoot was pulled together in about 2 weeks.
I chose Hitchinbrooke Park for my location and the beautiful skirts from Doris Design were a huge inspiration for the styling.

Make up and hair played a really important part in the image I was looking for and with the help of my storyboard and pinterest the styling came together.

Looking back on the shoot and images 9 months later, there are so many things I would do differently. I have learnt so much, new techniques, off camera flash. Hopefully I will recreate this theme before the year is out to compare.

Hitchin Lavender Fields | Cambridgeshire Portrait Photographer

As a photographer, one of the biggest compliment you can have is when another professional photographer hires you to take their profile pictures for their website, and this is exactly what Niki from Niki Wright Photography asked of me. I was so humbled that she asked me.
Niki sent me over her branding colours and a peek at her new website (coming soon) and we knew the perfect backdrop had to be Hitchin Lavender Farm.

I love Lavender, my last house had a lavender path up to our Victorian house, and my wedding accent colour was lavender, I love the smell, the colours and the numerous crafty things you can do with lavender!
