Air India’s New Delhi – Washington D.C. – New Delhi flights are also unlikely to click. The New Delhi – Melbourne flights must be fed by spoke flights from Amritsar and Bombay. The New Delhi – Milan flights need a 30 minute stopover in Amritsar to create 100% load factor in economy class.

Actually, Randy Tinseth estimated 635-645 aircraft with “>60 787s being forecast” for delivery. So roughly 650 is fairly close…

EY’s A319s seat 106 not 110 passengers and EY’s A320s seat 136 not 140 passengers.

Also QR operates one all-economy A321 (195Y).

Likely the Boeing deliveries are low due to the 787 issues. However, the deliveries are now beginning and the estimate of >60 (to as high as 72) 787s being delivered will allow them to catch and likely surpass Airbus by the end of the year.

737: 456 (may be a few less as ramp up to 38 may have been this year?)
747: 21 (based on 1.75/m)
767: 6?
777: 100 (based on 8.33/m)
787: 70 (based on allthings787 estimate)

Minor nitpick: Southwest has been adding 7 seats to their -700′s, for a total of 144 seats. That may explain capacity growth on routes that don’t have -800 service, but have a flat flight count.

Easy to say “don’t panic”, if you’re not the airport. If you are, any such “news” are “disastrous”…

The other question is the type of competition. Easyjet does well to also attract business travelers, but they want to fly back the same day on many of the mentioned routes, with Easyjet, they add a night enroute. If competitor offers “better” times, to them the cost factor is less important (it is, but…). Same for “touristic” routes, tour operator competition is there, flight only not always an option.

The analysis is limited. NRK has been in decline since 2002 when SAS pulled out from NRK CPH. Since then Linkoping/LPI (40 kms fm Norrkoping) is the growing airport in the region with KLM 3D to AMS and Nextjet(SAS codeshare) to CPH (2D). LPI has some runway restrictions, otherwise the charter traffic would move to this airport as Linkoping is a much bigger market than Norrkoping. Any new service to the region would abviously select LPI for the same reason.

The ATR’s might be adequate for most rotations, except for passenger’s over-head bin space when joining or leaving transatlantic services ex- Dublin. Another problem could be weight and balance which results in some bags being dispatched on later flights.

We have the conduit with the global online duty free database and traffic. There is a simple process known as web affiliation. You send traffic from one side and collect sales and revenues at the other. Or you can do it yourselves… but how do the airlines break their destination traffic down?

Great idea and great opportunities to increase concessionaire and airport revenues.

It is an idea that was thrown at a few airlines, a number of years ago and we(Duty Free concessionaires) were turned down as all were too protective of their individual data and were not looking at the big picture.

Knowledge of who, why, what, how etc make-up your customers is key to increase sales, deliver new and innovative services and exceed expectations.

Lets go over these so-called territorial obstacles and move forward.

It might be worth mentioning that Russia’s s7 airlines, a oneworld alliance member, has started Moscow Domodedovo services to Genoa on 20 April, twice a week, using A319 equipment with 128 seats in a two-class layout. The service to Italy will be increased to thrice weekly in June and up to five flights weekly in July.
s7 also launched twice weekly (Wednesday and Saturday) flights from Moscow Domodedovo to Athens on 27 April, also using the A319. The Athens service competes with Star alliance’s Aegean Airlines from Domodedovo and indirectly with Aeroflot, a Skyteam member, from Moscow Sheremetyevo, meaning all three alliances now have direct services between the Russian and Greek capitals.

India should fly from Delhi to San Francisco with spoke flights from Bangalore, Hyderabad and Amritsar. Most of the IT NRIs are from Bangalore and Hyderabad and most of the farmers are from the Amritsar area.

Amritsar deserves the India – Birmingham flights, because half a million Punjabis belonging to areas surrounding Amritsar are settled in and around Birmingham. There are hardly any other Indians in the area. Right now Turkmenistan Airlines is running a highly successful operation between Birmingham – Ashgabat – Amritsar. This flight takes 13 hours, whereas Air India’s direct service will take under nine hours. Air India is likely to get more passengers.

Business partnerships are about trust and mutual benefit. Airlines and airports have been doing business together for, well ….. Getting them to share information is another matter however.

Airports want sales at the shop on departure and consider the traveller a “captive market”. Airlines don’t want to carry the additional goods they don’t make a margin on for no additional fee – and why should they?

What is the way forward?

Airlines promote sales on arrival via dynamic targeting on passenger documents. The airline makes a commission for the promotion and the airport gets the sale in an area that is natural for passenger with no stock outages or wastage.

Simple really.
