Volare was another LCC, which operated flights between Rotterdam and Milan Malpensa several years ago.

Nador and Al Hoceima are not mentioned in this article as well. These flights are operated by transavia.com and are on both charter- and direct sale basis.

It was announced last week that BA will be flying LHR-RTM. This will thus mean that LHR will regain its RTM link, having previously been flown by KLM Cityhopper (F50s) and BASE (for BA, using EM2s).

Correct. We look at the current competition, but Innovata data does indeed show that Delta's last operation on the route will be on 10 July.

Something odorous about the details here. An airline purchased/financed with 'cypriot/ukrainian' cash goes 'bankrupt' but its routes are quickly adopted by numerous compeittors/relatives(?). Which shows that, like IAG and BMiBaby, it's a conscious decision to invest and divest a business which could be profitable, providing secure employment and reliable consumer confidence in the tickets.

Presumably the cypriot/ukrainian cash, laundered and assets stripped, is now safe in he right tax-exempt accounts, so the employees and customers can go away and be grateful it wasn't safety that was compromised?

Regarding Aegean's new route from Athens to Skiros Island (SKU), they actually face no competition as its a PSO route. Sky Express was the previous operator.

BMIBABY just announced on their website that all flights are ceasing on a selection of different dates. I guess this really is the end.

Belfast City will really suffer, as it is unlikely that any other airline will step in to take over their routes, compared with better chances at EMA and BHX. :(

Another airline going bust. It is always bad news for the industry, worse for the staff left behind. But the Sterling takeover was definitely an error Thatcher eventually (fuel prices helping) took them down.

The slots at LHR do not belong to Regional, they belonged to Mainline, who sub contracted Regional to run the routes into the ground, sorry provide a more suitable sized airframe. As a regular flyer to MAN on BMI it was sad to see numbers collapse, on some flights the passengers almost equalled the number of crew and the economics of jet regional aircraft with fuel at $100 are such that no one could make money at LHR using them.

Although Granite have expressed interest in buying Regional, except for a few routes out of Aberdeen where premium prices might survive while the oil is there (other small specialists have failed in the past) without Star Alliance connectivity and a decent FFP, I don't see it as financial survivor at all. As regards BMIBaby, thr rumours are that the announcement of its closure are only days away.

Dunno why they don't lobby for two new runways at Heathrow - a pair to the west of the current airport which are 20-30 degree offset in a southwest northwest direction from the current pair and built across the M25 and into one of the reservoirs. The configuration and operation would be similar to Madrid Barajas.

This would enable traffic to be managed more effectively and possibly allow various residential areas to have traffic free days. It's possible curfews could also be extended.

A new pair would also provide new development space between them for new terminals.

A short third runway to the north won't solve Heathrow's problems - and building a mega airport in the Thames estuary will only put massive pressure on the south eastern corner of England and shift England's only real global gateway further away from cities like Birmingham and Manchester.

Do nothing and Heathrow/London/England will continue to suffer because airlines want connectivity these days and are therefore unlikely to be tempted by Gatwick or Stansted etc.

In terms of European services, one could indeed imagine some of BRU/FRA/ZRH being dropped by an "American Airways". Munich is an Air Berlin hub so might remain; Berlin could conceivably start; and given the noises Mr Walsh is making about IAG running the rule over TAP, I wouldn't cancel the PHL-LIS service just yet...

So, it sounds like Steve works for AA. And is not a Union Member? Not that some of his points are not valid, however it is a very narrow minded view. Who is to say that a merger would not swallow up US AIR and simply emerge a leaner stronger AA brand? It is not impossible that AA could retain its ONE World status as well. It is very obvious that benefits exist for both parties to become more of a dominant force in the NE Markets, and then pick up a greater expansion opportunity in the West Coast. The SHAREHOLDERS for both airlines are driving this train, nobody else. There is cash to be made, after years of AA losses. They will move towards the stacks of mad money.

This proposed merger is usairways last attempt to grow in size as it is the smallest legacy carrier and with the growth of delta and united in the last few years,it would make it very hard for airways to exist in the future. They have hubs in 2nd tier cities,a lack of service in the mid-west,a very small wide body fleet, and no service to asia.
Airways still has not combined labor groups from the 2005 usairways-america west merger and trying to make peace with americans labor force is too large of a task to carry out and run an enlarged airline.
American has the hubs, fleet, and routes to emerge as a stand alone carrier and be large enough to have a major presence worldwide. Being part of the one world alliance gives it added world brand recognition.

Regarding the Lisbon-Asturias route, there has been another operator besides Iberia/Air Nostrum in the past, although for a very short time: the now defunct Air Asturias, which linked Lisbon with Oviedo three-weekly for a few months in 2006-2007.

And the winner is ... GIP (Global Infrastructure Partners). Given that GIP seem to have been quite content to see Ryanair's LGW network shrink during the last year from 10 routes to just seven(Alicante, Madrid and Rome have seemingly disappeared) it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Ryanair at EDI.

Bremen is amongst Ryanair's smallest bases. Bit surprised to see the UK is down this summer with the new base at Manchester that wasn't open in August 2011. Where are all the cuts elsewhere then, I think its mainly Liverpool who lost quite a few recently and was going to be smaller than last year anyway which would make sense due to its proximity to Manchester. Edinburgh as we know lost a few also and London-Stansted may have lost a few aswell but a few flights lost each week barely scratches the surface there with the amount they have.

Remember most importantly that just because an airport has more routes than another doesn't mean it has more flights. For instance Manchester has around 6, 7 or 8 less routes than East Midlands but infact has more flights a week as each route is flown more frequently. So just because London-Stansted has gained 11 routes, doesn't mean they've increased capacity, especially as alot of the new routes fly only a couple of times a week when the 3 lost were more regular running and they have probably cut the frequency of alot of existing routes from last summer.

I think your analysis took a week in August when Bremen airport will be closed (6 August - 11 August 2012), so generally other week then this numbers will be bigger as BRE is relatively big Ryanair base with 21 routes.

Has Flybe lost its way? Before it listed on the stock market it was seen as a strong regional airline that could thrive connecting smaller cities not big enough to attract competition from easyJet and Ryanair and make a profit using its turboprop planes. After three profit warnings in the year, it is a little tarnished. The Brussels airline deal seems to show it lacks confidence in its old / current model. Or am I being too harsh?

Depending on the definition, there could be an endless number of routes indirectly competing with each other. We limit our scope to non-stop services operating between the same city pairs. In this case, Ural Airlines and germanwings are the only two airlines operating between Moscow and Cologne/Bonn.

Only in an indirect competition with germanwings?
What about the other indirect competitors which are operating to various competing destinations in Germany?

Re: CAL POS-LGW Article

In addition to the issues you raise there is the not so minor issue of ETOPS.

The B767-300 is a new aircraft/engine combination for CAL. CAL has no prior experience with over 60 minute ETOPS operations. In such circumstances both the FAA and UK CAA require a minimum of 6 months lead time to evaluate an ETOPS application (In the US it has taken Allegiant - a substantial airline - 18 months and counting to get ETOPS for its planned 757 operation to Hawaii).

While the TT CAA can fast track the ETOPS authority required, I suspect this will raise serious concerns as to its underlying oversight capabilities both with the FAA (with a downgrade to CAT 2 possible) and the UK CAA.
