Pioneer, Chelsea build experience in basketball summer tournament

ALAN WARREN, THE ANN ARBOR NEWSPioneer's Nate Robertson drives the lane against Romulus at Pioneer High School on Wednesday. Robertson led the Pioneers in victories over Romulus, Novi and Warren De La Salle.

At last year's Pioneer Summer Shootout, basketball coach Rex Stanczak fine-tuned a team that went on to an undefeated regular season.

But with just one starter and two others returning from his nine-man playing rotation, this year's tournament was more about gaining experience.

"Five of our seniors are going on to play in college, and it's hard to replace that," Stanczak said. "No two teams are exactly alike, and this year's team will not be exactly like last year's team, but we've started to have the makings of a very good team."

Senior point guard Nate Robertson led the Pioneers in victories over Romulus, Novi and Warren De La Salle, and Stanczak was pleased with the team's performance overall.

"We really played well as a team," Stanczak said. "Nate Robertson is our lone returning starter, and he just does a tremendous job of breaking pressure, getting us into our offense and scoring when he needs to."

Pioneer junior Jamie Henry returned from an injury to play in the win over De La Salle, uniting with Robertson and seniors Pierce Hogan, Nick Giard and David Metzendorf to give Pioneer a glimpse of this winter's likely starting lineup.

"We've played a ton of games, and I am happy with the progression," Stanczak said. "We've just had a hard time keeping everybody healthy at once. But that can sometimes be a blessing because other guys are forced into action, and that's how you build depth."

Pioneer fielded a second team that dropped a pair of games to Southgate Anderson and Novi, while Southeastern Conference rival Chelsea topped Anderson and De La Salle but fell to Dearborn Heights Robichaud.

Because Gabriel Richard pulled out of the tournament, the Pioneers played back-to-back games with Romulus and Robichaud, with the latter handing Stanczak's squad its only loss.

The Pioneers will look forward to a rematch in the regular season opener with Robichaud, which lost to Anderson in the second of back-to-back games.

"The gym was so hot today, it was really hard for teams to go back-to-back," Stanczak said. "Robichaud looked good, but I think we were consistently as good as anybody today."

South Lyon's DeBord a nonstop energetic presence for girls lacrosse team

FILE: LEISA THOMPSON, THE ANN ARBOR NEWSTarrah DeBord led South Lyon to its first state finals appearance with unselfish play and nonstop energy. Although South Lyon lost to Birmingham Unified, DeBord said she's proud of what she accomplished at South Lyon. ''We left our mark,'' she said.

Related content: All-Area Girls Lacrosse team

Recent South Lyon High School graduate Tarrah DeBord said just one thing before the
Lions' regional final matchup with Pioneer, but it was telling.

She didn't tell her team she was going to score the winning goal or that the two teams wouldn't finish in a tie, like they did earlier in the regular season.

Rather, DeBord told her teammates she was going to mark All-State forward Kate Stevenson because in their previous meeting, she had beaten her to one groundball.

"That was the only thing on her mind," South Lyon coach Deanna Radcliffe said. "She didn't care about scoring. She just wants to be first to every ground ball. She just cares about the little things and knows that will help us win."

After beating Pioneer, DeBord helped South Lyon advance to the school's first state title game appearance, where the Lions fell 8-6 to defending champion Birmingham Unified for their only loss of the season.

"We went pretty far, but were very disappointed when we lost," said DeBord, the Ann Arbor News Player of the Year. "We had higher expectations this year."

DeBord's 30 goals and 18 assists ranked fifth on her team in each category, but it was her defense that opposing coaches noted in selecting her to the Division 1 All-State first team for the second consecutive year.

"She led in every defensive category," Radcliffe said. "She's a very unselfish player. I had a lot of players that could score. I didn't have a lot of people that could play defense and like playing it."

DeBord finished the season with 36 caused turnovers and nine interceptions, but not surprisingly, was more concerned with the 164 groundballs she collected as a senior.
"I want every ball that's on the ground," DeBord said. "If it's on the ground, it's mine."

Not a vocal leader, it was DeBord's energy and work ethic that rubbed off on her teammates.

"Every coach talks about her as the 'Energizer Bunny of South Lyon,' " Radcliffe said. "Her energy is never-ending, and she never stops. Even if she's injured, I'd have to call her mom to make her come off the field. She will never give less than 110 percent."

DeBord says her defensive style probably comes from playing hockey, which she still plays for a Livonia-based travel team.

The opportunity to continue playing hockey was one reason DeBord chose to attend Washtenaw Community College in the fall, as opposed to playing Division I lacrosse in college.

DeBord also wants to stay near home and pursue a career in welding, something she wouldn't be able to do at any of the east-coast colleges that feature lacrosse programs.

Even if DeBord - who plans to transfer to Ferris State in two years - has played her last game of lacrosse, she's proud of what she accomplished at South Lyon.

"We definitely left our mark," DeBord said. "Our goal was obviously to win a state title, but developing the program like we did, I hope we're remembered."

Pioneer No. 1 in state again

file: leisa thompson, the ann arbor newsPlayers on the Huron High School girls soccer team celebrate their victory over Grosse Pointe North in the state championship game on June 14. Huron also scored points with its girls tennis team.

Related content: High School Points Standings

The celebration following Huron High School's girls soccer state championship hadn't totally subsided when the cell phones started ringing.

Dottie Davis, athletic director at Huron, started taking calls from other Southeastern Conference athletic directors wondering how the River Rats fared. She and Pioneer AD Lorin Cartwright, who travelled to Troy to witness Huron's win, then called around to see if fellow SEC members Saline and Tecumseh were successful in their attempts to win baseball and softball titles, respectively, in Battle Creek.

Yes, June 14 was a good day for the SEC, capping a stellar spring season and a strong overall school year.

"I can't tell you how proud the ADs are of how wonderful the league has become," Cartwright said. "It really shows the things we're trying to do with our coaching staffs and administratively are really working."

And the league's two most successful athletic programs according to a scoring system developed by the Ann Arbor News - Pioneer and Dexter - weren't even represented on that final day of the 2007-08 high school sports year.

Pioneer finished first in the state for the fifth consecutive year, scoring 62.5 points in a system that awards points for performance in 28 sports with MHSAA-sponsored statewide and Lower Peninsula championships. The top eight teams in each division of each sport accrue points for their school in the same manner as an MHSAA track meet (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1).

Dexter also made its second straight top-10 appearance, placing ninth in the state with 41.5 points.

Three other SEC members - Huron (17th, 32.5 points), Saline (21st, 30.5) and Tecumseh (27th, 28.5) - finished in the top 30, placing more than half of the nine-member league's programs among the state's elite. Only the Grand Rapids-area OK Conference, which touts 44 member schools, had greater representation, with six in the top 30.

The 25-school Oakland Activities Association (four) and the 26-school Capital Area Activities Association (three) were the only other leagues with three or more teams among that list.

SEC members Chelsea (tied for 46th) and Temperance Bedford (tied for 59th) also scored points. Adrian and Ypsilanti Lincoln were the only league members not to score.

Pioneer was in third place after the fall and winter seasons but leapfrogged to the top spot once again after a spring season that saw the Pioneers score 26 points, the second-most in the state. The school won a Division 1 girls track title, was runner-up in girls tennis, reached a semifinal in boys lacrosse and a quarterfinal in girls lacrosse.

The top-scoring Class A school each year since the system was introduced after the 2001-02 school year, Pioneer tied Class B Detroit Country Day in 2004-05 and Class B East Grand Rapids in 2006-07 for the overall title.

And Cartwright doesn't envision Pioneer's reign as the state's premier athletic department to end once neighboring Skyline High School opens this fall and starts pilfering from its athletic rosters. Most of the coaches, after all, are staying put.

"Winning state championships or league titles is an extension of what happens in educational athletics when you have the right coaches in place, teaching the right things, and the skills are there," she said. "The natural progression is you'll win something, but that's just gravy on the top."

"My hope is we continue to hire the right people that do the right things so that they do excel."

Dexter scored 18.5 points this spring, the ninth-best total in the state. The Dreadnaughts were runners-up in Division 2 golf, reached a D2 girls soccer semifinal and were fourth at the D2 boys track finals.

A pair of runner-up finishes in D1 baseball and golf gave Saline 16 points.

Huron (girls soccer, girls tennis), Chelsea (girls soccer, girls track) and Gabriel Richard (girls track, girls tennis) were the other local schools to score in multiple sports.
Tecumseh (softball), South Lyon (girls lacrosse), Ypsilanti (girls track), Pinckney (boys track), Howell (softball), Brighton (boys golf), Greenhills (girls soccer) and Clinton (softball) also scored points this spring.
