PCT's ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 certificates renewed

Pacific Crest Transformers is pleased to announce that its three key quality and environmental management certificates, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSA 18001, have been recommended for renewal by its ISO registrar, Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.

The recommendation was based on a rigorous annual audit and assessment of PCT's integrated Q uality, E nvironmental, and H ealth & S afety (QEHS) Management System. PCT has held the ISO 9001 certificate for quality management since 2000, the ISO14001 certificate for environmental management since 2003, and the OHSAS 18001 certificate for international occupational health and safety management since 2005.

"Our long term maintenance of all three certificates clearly demonstrates that PCT measures up very well against the best-in-class standard practices of our industry," said Carrie Holmes, PCT's vice president of quality assurance and product support. "Our adherence to these international management system standards gives us the platform for continuous improvement over time."

Pacific Crest Offers Transformers For The Retrofit Market

Pacific Crest Transformers (PCT), a leader in the design and construction of liquid-filled distribution transformers, announces that it offers a unique transformer design ideal for retrofitting existing transformers. PCT meets the market's need for a turnkey retrofit solution that fits into an existing space and easily connects to high and low voltage equipment already in place.

PCT's transformers are custom-designed for each installation, so the retrofit design and mechanical components can be matched with the existing application. With Pacific Crest's turnkey solution, facility managers can quickly and easily replace transformers during a planned outage.

The company's leading edge design offers an extremely high efficiency transformer, which meets the needs of facilities responding to Department of Energy requirements stipulating that replacement transformers incorporate new high efficiency standards.

Large multi-facility companies seeking to anticipate and plan for future transformer replacement can use PCT's specialty engineering expertise to develop proactive transformer replacement programs. PCT conducts inventories of installed transformers and develops a library of conceptual designs ahead of time. This enables customers to anticipate costs and avoid lag time for design work. Companies can order replacements from the bank of designs as needed, before a costly outage.

"Literally millions of transformers are coming to the end of their natural life and must be replaced," said Tom Steeber, Pacific Crest Transformer's vice president of marketing and sales. "Pacific Crest offers a leading edge replacement transformer and can partner with our customers to give them a strategy for planning their retrofit programs."

PCT's transformers feature circular windings that spread the radial forces evenly over their circumference and have cooling ducts throughout the coils, eliminating hot spots that lead to premature breakdown and ultimately to transformer failure. Coil end blocking with heavy duty 3 gauge steel bracing and proprietary pressure plates contains the axial forces exerted during a fault condition. These forces can cause telescoping of the coils, shortening transformer life. The innovative design includes round coils, a cruciform, mitered core with heavy-duty clamping and a proprietary pressure plate design, as well as a premium no-load tap changer.

Pacific Crest To Attend Doble Conference And Speak On Wind Farm Transformer Design

Pacific Crest Transformers (PCT), a leader in the design and construction of liquid-filled distribution transformers, announces that it has been selected to give a presentation on "Wind Farm Transformer Design Considerations" at the International Conference of Doble Clients, which will take place from March 27 through April 1, 2011, at the Westin Hotel Copley Place, in Boston, MA. Don Ayers, PCT's Vice President for Engineering and Manufacturing, will make the presentation.

Mr. Ayers will discuss the most likely causes of wind turbine step-up transformer failures, including heat build-up from rapid and irregular thermo-cycling and frequent fault conditions. He will discuss issues related to variable loading, harmonics and non-sinusoidal loads, transformer sizing and voltage variation. He will also discuss the need for low-voltage-fault-ride-through with wind farms, as well as protection and fire behavior and switching surges and transient over-voltages.

According to Mr. Ayers, "In the rush to cash-in on wind energy, developers are often trading low first costs for higher total costs of ownership to be shouldered later by the wind farm owners and operators." He adds, "The practice of using conventional "off the shelf" distribution transformers as a low cost solution is folly. The role of the wind turbine step-up transformer in this process is critical and, as such, its design needs to be carefully and thoughtfully analyzed and reevaluated."

Now in 110 countries, Doble Engineering helps clients in the electric power industry improve operations and optimize system performance. The 2011 Conference marks the conference's 78 th year. Doble Engineering offers diagnostic instruments, services, and a premier library of statistically significant apparatus test results for the benefit of energy generation and delivery companies and industrial power users worldwide.

PCT has significant expertise in the wind farm transformer industry. The company offers the PCT WTSU, an engineered solution that addresses the specific needs of the wind farm turbine. The WTSU features an innovative design that includes round coils, a cruciform, mitered core with heavy-duty clamping and a proprietary pressure plate design. The transformer features circular windings that spread the radial forces evenly over their circumference and have cooling ducts throughout the coils, eliminating hot spots that lead to premature breakdown and ultimately to transformer failure. Coil end blocking with heavy duty steel bracing and proprietary pressure plates contain the axial forces exerted during a fault condition. These forces can cause telescoping of the coils, shortening transformer life.
