One of my friends works for MetLife.  She is a new agent, and we tried to help her by purchasing insurance policies for me and my wife.  Back then, we had no idea what we were getting into.  Everything she explained to us sounded good.  We were told that at the end of the term we can get our premium back and we can get it out any time we want.  For two policies we paid $300 every month.

After reading a number of finance books, I've started to realize that I've made a huge mistake with my life insurance;  Another poor choice made.  In this post, I will tell you everything about cash value life insurance and why should you avoid it.

What is cash value life insurance?

First of all, let's understand what cash value life insurance is.  A cash value policy is product that combines insurance and savings together. This insurance package was designed by the insurance companies to have more money in their bank.  So when you purchase a cash value policy, a small portion gose to the premium and the rest goes to your savings account.

So what's wrong with cash value life insurance?

The major problem with a cash value policy is that the returns are horrible.  Looking at my policy I've lost almost all of my cash value since the beginning.  There was not a single month where I gained money.  The wonderful projections shown by my friend was not even close to what I was getting.  I understand that I should have a long term perspective, but I don't think it's going to get any better.

Another thing you should know about cash value life insurance is that your cash value, or your savings don't go to your family upon your death.  They get paid only the face value of the policy.

Why does everyone purchase cash value life insurance?

It is pushed hard because the companies pay high commissions on cash value life insurance.  Sadly, over 70% of the life insurance policies sold today are cash value policies.

Should I buy term life insurance instead?

Yes, you will be better off with a term life policy.  It is very simple and the prices fall every year.  You can buy the same coverage for a fraction of the cost.  Buy a term life policy and invest the rest in good growth stock mutual funds that have been open for 5 years or longer.

So should you be worried?

Well, many experts predict that more banks will fail in the next 12 months or so and I don't disagree with that.  But I wouldn't be worried about my money at all because I know my money is insured upto $100,000 by the FDIC.  If you have more than $100,000 deposited in one bank, you should consider spreading it out at different banks.  Don't make the mistake of putting money in different branches of the same bank though.

What's the worst case?

The worst case is not getting your money, not because the FDIC is not paying you, but because your bank is not insured by the FDIC.  There are banks that are NOT insured by the FDIC.  Even the ones that claim they are insured by the FDIC could be lying to you.  Use the FDIC's Bank Find tool to find out if your bank is insured or not.  If your bank is not listed there, take your money out and RUN!

How long does it take to get my money back from the FDIC?

There are people swearing that it take up to 99 years to get your money from the FDIC.  It is a hoax based on absolutely no evidence.  According to the FDIC, it usually take a few days of a bank's closure, either by check or by deposit at another bank.

What should I do from here?

First of all, stop worrying about your money at your bank.  Don't take out the money.  Leave it there!  Tell your friends about it using some of the terms used by the FDIC and they will look up to you.

What's more annoying than voting for a president when there is no one to vote for? 

Obama or McCain?

I would vote for "none of the above" if there is a such choice. Aren't we due for some "leaders" in this country? How can we put either Obama or McCain in the White House when they both act like 6th grade kids?

McCain obviously lost a great opportunity to lead us out of the recent financial mess with the his "yay" vote on the $700 billion dollar bail-out plan. Well $850 billion to be more accurate. He could've stood up and fight to review other alternatives. He could've really turn this around if he was smart enough to listen to his constituents and willing to fight against the arrogant Washington. I thought he was a Maverick..?

And I can't stand Obama's and Biden's economic plan. What are they thinking? Paying higher taxes is a patriotic act? Just hilarious. What makes them think they can take away money from the wealthy and give to the poor?

My friend owns a moving company that he worked his butt off for last 10 years. He now makes just over $300,000 with his business and I personally don't know anyone else who worked harder than him. I've helped him moving tables and desks through stairs, often hurting ourselves in the process. He still works days and nights.

I also have a friend who works at a local gym who makes about $23,000. He enjoys traveling, and enjoys working with people. He chose not to get tied up with his work too much because he wants to travel.

Now, there is a third person, unfortunately in my family, who doesn't want to work. He works here and there and makes barely $200 - $300 per week. He has a wife who works at a deli, but I don't know how much she makes. I'm sure it's around $10 - $12 an hour.

So What's my point here?

What makes Obama think he can tax more on my friend who owns the moving company and give it to either my other friend who works at the gym or my relative who doesn't want to work? Is this fair to you?

This looks more like socialism to me.

To me, Obama and McCain are just playing politics. Seems like no one wants to lead this country. We desperately need a third Political Party.
