CASP in Kenya: Pan-African Congress on Autism 2019

With the theme of Autism in Africa: Debunking Myths and Stigma Through Diagnosis, Dedication and Evidence Based Interventions, the Pan-African Congress on Autism (PACA) held the first conference of this magnitude dedicated to the region in Nairobi, Kenya April 25-27^th. Over 22 African countries were represented.

Dr. Liliana Mayo, Executive Director and Founder of CASP was an invited presenter with the theme “The Power of 2: Families and Professionals Working as a Team”.

It was an honor to have Dr. Liliana Mayo as one of our keynote speakers. Her message resonated with professionals, parents, government officials and adults with autism.

It gave parents hope. It empowered both parents and professionals to work together so that individuals with different abilities can be independent, productive and happy.

Undoubtedly, having the presence of Dr. Mayo representing Peru in the Congress is a great achievement for the country and an opportunity to learn more about the work that is being done to benefit the social and inclusion to work for people with different abilities.

The UNLIMITED potential of the person with autism

Dr. Stephen Shore, Ph.D. - Adelphi University Professor

Dr. Stephen Shore recently visited CASP to conduct a seminar with Dr. Liliana Mayo titled, “The UNLIMITED potential of the person with autism.” Dr. Shore, who at a young age was diagnosed with “atypical development with strong autistic tendencies” and who was nonverbal until the age of four went on to complete his Ph.D. at Boston University.

What Dr. Shore had to say about his visit to CASP:

My visit to CASP began at the doorway with warm greetings and hugs from what seemed like all of the staff at CASP! I found CASP to be an amazing place employing abilities based model by asking what can the person with a disability do rather than focusing on what the individual is unable to do.

I was deeply impressed by a number of aspects of CASP. One, the extensive parent support network where parents from distant cities receive education and training to support their children with disabilities – and then go on to teach other parents in their cities the same. Parents are the experts on their children and CASP certainly knows that!

Two, the amount of successful inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace. By providing support to both the employer and the person having different abilities, this involvement in employment is a crucial part to community inclusion as a whole.

There's so much to report. However, I will end with the Q & A session with teenage and adult individuals with disabilities. Although it may seem surprising that most of the questions focused on relations, dating, and intimate relationships. However, these issues tend to be on the minds of many people with disabilities – or not. Therefore, in addition to these concerns be international in scope amongst people with disabilities, I have found that people who don't have disabilities have the same concerns. This suggest that these questions or more of just being human, rather than being bound by ability or geographical location. And... they bind us all together as part of the human race.

A Call for Emergency - CASP / Peru

You have likely heard that Peru is experiencing a national natural disaster with severe flooding due to heavy rains. While some countries are prepared for heavy rains, many parts of Peru do not have the infrastructure to handle the amount of rain they have received. 117 bridges have collapsed, rivers are flooding into towns and villages and entire communities who have built makeshift homes on mountainsides are collapsing, damaging more than 115,000 homes.

CASP staff and families are among those affected by this disaster. Schools have been cancelled across the country due to dangerous transportation conditions and, in some cases, people simply cannot leave their immediate community from roads and bridges being washed out. Additionally, the tent on the 3rd floor of the center, that protects our classrooms from being damaged by rain, needs to be replaced.

We are writing to you in the hope that you will support CASP and the families affected by this disaster. Some families will no longer be able to pay tuition for their child to continue their education at CASP in order to care for their family's immediate needs as a result of the disaster. Your support could be the difference that they need.

"Brought Me To Tears"

"Brought me to tears" was the comment made by Dr. Dick Malott, one of the founders of the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI), in response to Dr. Liliana Mayo’s recent keynote address about the CASP model at the ABAI Conference in Puerto Rico. Dr. Dick Malott, who for over 40 years has used the principles of behavior said that he has attended all 11 of International Autism Conferences and that this was the first presentation and presenter who got a standing ovation.

Dr. Mayo talked about the work of CASP in a presentation titled, How People With Autism In Peru Are Economically And Meaningfully Supporting Their Families. She spoke about the partnership that CASP has with parents, teaching them to become the best teacher/parents they can for their children with different abilities.

Bank of the Nation receives award for contributing to the education of people with different abilities

The Ann Sullivan Center of Peru (CASP) awarded a recognition to the Agency of the Bank of the Nation, located in the Pueblo Libre district, for contributing to the civic education of our students. As a result the students of CASP received training on the adequate use of automatic registers and clerk operations, the same training done on October 29, November 5 and November 19 of this year.

Our students learned how to form lines at the banking agency and wait their turn. They also learned how to withdraw cash from the automatic teller machine and how to make deposits at the window. Liliana Mayo, Director of CASP, awarded the special distinction to officers of the bank, represented by Pueblo Libre Agency Administrator Lida Campañay, in recognition of their contribution to the education and social development of our students. The recognition was given during the 2016 graduation ceremony of the School of Families in the CASP auditorium.

Students of the Ann Sullivan Center attend the USIL

Students of the Ann Sullivan Center (CASP) will be able to enter the labor market thanks to the Employment Network program administered by the Cisco business and the San Ignacio de Loyola University (USIL).

As a result of this, thirteen students from CASP took classes over a period of three months (twelve Sundays) covering computer and systems management as part of the pilot project that Cisco and USIL also launched, in favor of women of scarce resources.

By forming part of the first Employment Network, which is an initiative led by the Computer Engineering and Systems Program of USIL, our students are being trained in the field of Information and Communications Technologies in order to be included in the labor market, which contributes to the improvement of their quality of life and the narrowing of the digital gap.

“The Employment Network program constitutes a digital connection between people with different abilities and employing businesses, educational institutions, government entities and Cisco Networking Academy. By being registered in our network, they could be interviewed and considered for work opportunities,” said Ana María Ramírez, director of the Computer Engineering and Systems Program at USIL.

Founder and Executive Director of CASP, Liliana Mayo, PhD., said, “This new alliance had a new initiative: that of including people with different abilities for the first time. The students in information technology are also helping the students from CASP, which prepares them for future employment in information technology, which is one of the main objectives.”

Luis Alonso Rodríguez, a student of the program, also highlighted the importance of his participation in the project: “Here I can learn technology, the web and the internet.”

The CASP students assigned to participate in USIL’s and Cisco’s project are between the ages of 15 and 45 and come from the School Inclusion and Regular Classrooms programs. Their diagnoses are autism, mild retardation, Down syndrome and cognitive deficit.

It is worth noting that in Peru two out of every three people when different abilities lack some degree of education or only received an elementary education in many cases. Only one out of every ten has reached higher education. And only two out of every ten find employment.

For 36 years, Dr. Judith M. LeBlanc has been dedicated to support and help create the vision of CASP

Dr. Mayo, after reading all she could on behavior analysis and facing a growing school and the necessity to improve, felt compelled to look overseas for guidance from the professionals whose books she had read. Her goal: to convince someone who had expertise in the field to come to Peru, understand their objectives, and advise them about how to proceed. Her search lead her to the University of Kansas’ (KU) Dr. Judith M. LeBlanc.

Dr. LeBlanc agreed to travel to Peru. She was impressed by what she saw during her first visit in 1981 and saw an opportunity to test her beliefs about how people learn. So began a long, productive partnership between Dr. Mayo and Dr. LeBlanc and between KU and CASP. Dr. LeBlanc would return to Peru for the next 35 years and help CASP develop a unique curriculum focused on functional and natural skills designed to prepare students for inclusion into life. With the mantra of “independent, productive, and happy", she has influenced the staff CASP to focus on students’ and their parents abilities rather than disabilities.

“One of the things we saw in Judy was the humbleness to teach us; she respected our culture,” Dr. Mayo says. From the beginning, Dr. LeBlanc encouraged the CASP team to think critically, to treat students as they would want to be treated, and to have a long-term vision. The relationship between CASP and Dr. LeBlanc has made CASP what it is today and is a true testament to the power of collaboration and the beauty that emerges when you give of yourself to others.

Mother to Mother 2016

For the second consecutive year, with an important and generous donation of 41 round-trip airline tickets from "Peruvian, the Airline of Peru", the Ann Sullivan Center of Peru (CASP), completed another successful " Mother-to-Mother " training experience. Ten teams, each consisting of 2 specialists from CASP, a mother (one dad too!) and their child with different abilities, traveled to 10 cities across Peru to conduct free workshops for parents of children with different abilities living in the cities and surrounding areas. The results exceeded expectations with 1,135 parents and caregivers attending.

The Mother to Mother program provides families with a day long experience of learning from not only CASP professionals but from parents such as themselves who have shared their same fears, hopes and dreams for their child’s future. Families attending this workshop learn about the power of having high expectations, treating their child as a person capable of becoming independent, productive and happy and the power of becoming a teacher as well as a parent for their child. The parent/child teams from CASP conducted demonstrations of successful teaching and learning between a parent and their child for the audience and participated in answering questions after the workshop. For the 9 mothers and 1 father, this experience of being part of a team, to share life experiences they have with their children and meet other parents of Peru this was an exciting and unforgettable experience.

CASP would like to also thank our facilitators in the 10 cities who have been very important to the organization and logistics for a successful day. These facilitators identified support of other organizations to donate a location for the workshop, sound equipment, projectors, advertised through local media and Internet, and organized accommodations, meals and local transportation for each team. This day truly would not have been possible without their support!

The 10 cities were chosen in partnership with the volunteer facilitators who made a commitment to organize the workshops. The cities were: Cusco, Sicuani, Arequipa, Tacna, Moquegua, Pucallpa , Moyobamba, Iquitos, Chiclayo and Sullana. For 1st time the workshops were held in the cities of Moyobamba and Sullana.

The Realization of a Dream

Every dream starts in the mind of a person and in this case it was the dream of Dr. Liliana Mayo.

While pursuing an undergraduate degree in clinical psychology in 1977, Liliana was labeled a troublemaker by her academic advisor for asking too many questions. A military government governed Peru during the 1970s, and “radical”, well-read psychology students such as Dr. Liliana, were “punished” by being sent to complete internships in special education. However, little did Liliana know, this internship would change her life. She encountered a grim situation.

No educational infrastructure existed for people with severe disabilities as few people believed they could learn, meaning that most stayed at home learning little and accomplishing even less. Unable to turn her back on this reality, opening a school for people with different abilities became Liliana’s dream. With her parent’s blessing, she set up a small classroom in their garage. On August 20, 1979, Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú (CASP) became a reality. Eight students immediately enrolled and Liliana’s friends from the university became volunteer teachers. Against all odds and its humble garage beginnings, CASP has grown into an international full service center that educates over 450 students annually, ranging from birth to adulthood. This growth was also thanks to support from principle CASP consultant, Dr. Judith LeBlanc from the University of Kansas who joined Liliana's dream 35 years ago. Dr. LeBlanc's role in developing the CASP model has been integral to the impact of CASP around the world.

The continual education program includes curriculum for students, parents and siblings as well. This makes CASP unique, as the only center currently known of that persistently and continually teaches and refreshes family skills throughout the student's’ lifetime of education. The CASP model of inclusion into life is successful because families, schools, communities, and workplaces have become a team that is intensely dedicated to the success of each student.

Dr. Liliana Mayo was the guest of honour of the Government of the Dominican Republic at the opening of the second center of comprehensive attention to disability in Santiago de los Caballeros

On November 20,2015, Dr. Liliana Mayo was the guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the Center of Comprehensive Attention to Disability (CAID) that took place in Santiago City, Dominican Republic. It is the second center out of five that will be built by the Dominican government to give support to children with different abilities in that country. The event counted on the presence of the Dominican Republic President´s Danilo Medina , the First Lady Cándida Montilla de Medina, the President of Panama Juan Carlos Varela and his wife Lorena Castillo de Varela.

At this important event, Dr. Mayo had the opportunity to meet up with the First Ladies of Dominican Republic and Panama who showed their admiration to her effort in support for inclusion of people with different abilities that CASP has been making over the last 36 years in Peru and around the world. Likewise, the First Lady Cándida Montilla de Medina stated that Centro Ann Sullivan of Peru has been an “inspiration” to her. The First Lady of Panama, Lorena Castillo de Varela, remembered happy moments she had experience during her visit to CASP in Lima and the positive outcomes that the Centro Ann Sullivan Panamá (CASPAN), which follows the Peruvian Model, has gotten in her country.

During her stay in Dominican Republican, Dr. Mayo and the psychologist Shirley Marroquin gave theoretical and practical training sessions to professionals and families of people with different abilities of CAID (in Santiago) about the philosophy on which CASP bases its education methods. The course/workshops were as follows: “Trátame como a cualquier persona” (treat me like everybody else) and “El ABC de cómo educar a mi hijo con habilidades diferentes” (The ABC of how to educate my child with different abilities), and the conference titled ¨Introduction for working with families¨. These events had a massive attendance and the motivating stories from students and the great job CASP has been doing inspired the Dominican families.

It is worth mentioning that in 2014, the government of Dominican Republic awarded Dr. Liliana Mayo with the Heraldic Order of Christopher Columbus, Official Degree, for her recognized work through the Ann Sullivan Center in favor of people with different abilities in Peru and around the world, as well as her constant support offered to the Dominican Republic in the implementation of methodologies to help in the development of the Center of Comprehensive Attention to Disability (CAID).

Students of CASP lived and innovated experience of a simulated flight thanks to Delta Air Lines

For the third year in a row, today October 28th, 200 students with different abilities were transported from the third floor of CASP to Atlanta and back to Lima. The students enjoyed an innovated and unique experience with the support of Delta Air Lines.

Delta Air Lines is committed to support initiatives of organizations which work to improve the health and well-being of people with different abilities, hoping to have an impact on the lives of people all over the world.

This activity was performed with the support of Ms. Delia Maria Ortega, representative of Delta Air Lines in Peru, and local and international airline staff. The purpose of the activity is to make our students participate in the simulation to learn the whole flying sequence in an airplane and be ready to have this flying experience. They follow instructions such as waiting for their turn to be assisted, providing their personal details (name, age, address), identifying their seat number according to their boarding pass, taking care of their belongings, and following instructions of the flight attendants.

“It is an inspiring experience that a company such as Delta continues betting on people with different abilities for three years, and that always ask us how to improve. The company is adding new environments, such as a counter like the one we find at the airport, security and a simulated plane with more seats. Delta is helping our students to know the sequence since they arrive at the airport, show their passports, recognise their seats, put away their suitcases. During these three years, we have seen the difference made in the lives of our students when they get on a plane. DELTA is a company aware of the mission of CASP, which is to make independent, productive and happy people.” Explained Dr. Liliana Mayo, founder of CASP.

Furthermore, Ms. Delia Maria Ortega, representative of Delta Air Lines in Peru mentioned, “We are very pleased to help Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú do this simulated flight activity. It is the third time we perform it and the results are impressive. It is important for us in Delta to support the community we work for. Thank you, Centro Ann Sullivan.”

People with different abilities will have employment opportunities in Parliament

Through the Board of Directors an agreement was signed with the Ann Sullivan Center of Peru.

People with different abilities in the country will have employment opportunities in the National Parliament thanks to the decision of its current Board of Directors to sign an agreement with the Ann Sullivan Center of Peru, which serves more than 450 young people with severe limitations.

The agreement was signed by the head of Parliament, Luis Iberico Núñez, and the founder and executive director of CASP, Liliana Mayo, during an event held in the Sala Castilla of the Legislative Palace. Third Vice President Luis Galarreta Velarde, one of the promoters of the event, also attended.

During his speech, the president of the Congress said this is a sign that the First Power of the State is still working to promote policies that grant dignity to people with disabilities, just as every individual deserves, according to our Political Constitution.

He added that they should decide and exercise their own abilities, legal personalities and will, without other people deciding for them.

For this reason, Iberico Núñez highlighted the agreement signed with CASP, because, he said, it is a very prestigious and model institute where research and training are done and where young people are prepared to pursue a worthy job.

“The areas that have been identified for now as places where the young people of the Ann Sullivan Center can perform their work are Documentary Process, Library, Dining Supervision, Auxilary Services, Press, and others,” he said.

Then Iberico reported that there are currently 29 people with disabilities working in the parliamentary service and three in the parliamentary organization. He said he had faith that after the agreement, they would reach the 5 percent quota required by Law No. 29973.

In the event, the president of the Congress introduced Luis Miguel, a disabled worker from the Parliamentary Service who has worked there since 2003 and who has a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and a master’s degree in Social Sciences from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. “It is an honor to have you as a collaborator of Parliament,” he said.

Third Vice President Luis Galarreta reported that it is a policy of the current board of directors to be concerned for people with disabilities who work in Parliament. He said that because of this, he has visited the different offices to see how their work is going and whether they have evacuation plans in the event of emergencies or other problems.

“In this way, we seek to be inclusive in an efficient manner and respecting the human rights of this sector of the population,” Galarreta said.

Liliana Mayo, Executive Director of CASP, said it is a historic moment for Peru that the Congress of the Republic would give work opportunities to this sector of the population. She added that it will serve as an inspiration to be repeated in other countries.

“If they are hiring them, it is not for charity but for quality,” she said. “These young people always ask for more work and are very loyal. They will be very appreciative of their Congress.”

The signing of the agreement will not result in costs to the parties. It is valid for three years and will be subject to biannual evaluation.

In Peru, People with Disabilities Day is celebrated every October 16 in commemoration of the first joint action for the rights of men and women with different abilities, which occurred in the 1980 Senate.

The fine arts auction Des-Bordes x1 for students of CASP was a success

The II solidarity arts auction of Centro Ann Sullivan Del Perú called DES-BORDES x1 staged on Wednesday, June 17^thin the evening in the Art Gallery of Cultural Center “El Olivar” in San Isidro, was considered a complete success.

DES-BORDES x1 sold 14 works of arts donated by well-known Peruvian plastics artists, and paintings of our student Salvador Velarde. The proceeds in this II solidarity arts auction will finance the scholarship of our students with limited resources, so they can continue their training and integration in society, as well as becoming independent, productive and happy.

Salvador’s big night

DES-BORDES x1 also became the platform to meet new artists. Because of this opportunity, our 17- year-old painter, Salvador Velarde, was able to exhibit and auction his work. He is a born artist of unique and genuine art. Despite his young age, he paints his experiences in different formats. In this auction, he made available for sale three of his works which were sold with great success.

“I feel very happy, I cannot believe it, it is a very important moment for me. My works are my escape. When I was sad, I found shelter in my paintings so I could be better. I thank everybody, especially the Centro Ann Sullivan for this great opportunity” stated our young student.

“My paintings show everything I have felt in crutial and shocking moments. Before I start drawing with a pencil and a brush, I don’t necessarily have a portrayed figure on my mind; I do not always paint what I had in mind, but my memories and feelings lead me to paint the whole painting, and eventually, this represents me completely. Perhaps most people see the meaning in a very common way, but for me… it is much more than a painting”, indicated Salvador Velarde.

On April 2, as part of the scheduled events for the World Awareness Autism Day, the United Nations (UN) will hold a session under the title: "Employment: The Autism Advantage" that includes presentations by international business executives and experts from different parts of the world who work with autism people. One of these expositors is the Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru (CASP in Spanish) that has been invited to speak about its experience in labor market inclusion.

Rosa Oyama, Director of Projects and Research at CASP, will give a speech about the great work her educational institution is doing for including people with different abilities on the labor market through the Supported Employment program. This program began to be operational 19 years ago and currently it has over 100 students/workers working for renowned companies all over Peru.

The event will be held at UN headquarters in New York City and it will be transmitted live and direct, which you can watch it at http://webtv.un.org/

It is important to note that CASP has played an important role in the education of people with different abilities and their families for 36 years in our country and the world.

Australian Ambassador to Perú visits CASP

Mr. Nicholas McCaffrey, Ambassador of Australia to Peru and Bolivia, visited the Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú on Thursday, March 5. Along with Dr. Rosa Oyama, Director of the Project and Research Team, and Liz Tolentino, Director of the Educational Team, he could observe the work we do with families and students enrolled in different programmes of the center; and was pleasantly impressed by skills shown by students receiving on the job training at the Solucion laundry.

The Centro Ann Sullivan of Peru expresses its gratitude to the Ambassador and his retinue for their visit and interest shown in our educational model for people with different abilities that has been being applied in Peru and other countries around the world for 35 years.
