For years rats have been blamed for everything from the bubonic plague to electrical fires.

Are rats getting a bum rap?

John Allen Muhammed, better known as the DC sniper, is expected to be executed in prison tonight after the Supreme Court refused to block it. Officials say that there is usually some discomfort with the death penalty, but in this case, many feel that the punishment fits the crime.. President Obama will attend the memorial service for the victims of the Ft. Hood massacre. Officials believe that Major Nidal Hasan acted alone, and he will be interrogated upon his recovery... The producer accused of blackmailing David Letterman will appear in court today...

Dashboard Confessional, After The Ending - Special Ed was a fan before Chris Carrabba went and changed his sound. The Sandbox agrees that the wheels came off with that "Vindicated" song. Rating: J&F, Janice and Friends, because Fletcher's Mom and all her friends will thoroughly enjoy this album.

Andy Ference

Bruins defenseman Andy Ference called into the Sandbox today. With some of the Bruins sick, the Sandbox suggests finding some sort of medication. Maybe melting down the Stanley Cup and mixing it with traditional herbs can do the trick. Ference isn't worried too much about H1N1 - players that get sick get quarantined. The Bruins have yet to string together back to back wins, but Andy says that they're doing the best they can to stay at around .500 and be competitive. Special Ed is making a prediction - tonight, Andy Ference will either A) get into a fight with Sidney Crosby or B) score his first goal. If one of those happens, Andy might even shout out the Sandbox, but only if we stop playing that Owl City song. We might have a deal here!

Qdoba Mega Robo Thunder Query

There's rats all over the place in Ed and Fletcher's neighborhood. They don't really bother anyone. So really, are rats THAT bad?

Now we are by no means animal rights activists at the Sandbox, but some of you guys have killed rats in some pretty brutal ways. Apparently, to you people, rats are indeed THAT bad. I guess that Ratatouille movie didn't exactly make rats seem more cool and friendly.

American Hi-Fi

Stacy Jones and the rest American Hi-Fi came into the Sandbox today. They actually have a pretty sweet gig - they're part of Miley Cyrus' touring band! They have a good time with Miley, they say she's really cool and a hard worker. They'll be at the Middle East Upstairs tomorrow night so check them out!

John Buonomo, ex Middlesex County register of probate pleaded guilty to eight counts of breaking and entering and stealing over $100,000 in campaign funds. Hurricane Ida is heading toward the Gulf Coast. Fearing this could be another Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana has declared a state of emergency. Steven Tyler has quite Aerosmith, in order to work on the "Steven Tyler Brand."

Mr. Belding

We all watched Saved by the Bell when we were younger, right? The guys interviewed Dennis Haskins, a.k.a Mr. Belding, a few weeks ago! He will always be Mr. Belding to us... he was everyone's principal. And he still makes appearances as Mr. Belding at colleges and bars! We're all glad he still embraces the character from so many years ago. Not everyone is that cool. For instance, Dustin Diamond doesn't want to be associated with Screech at all. Dennis says he can either embrace the part or run from it, and he doesn't understand running from it. He's not running from the fact that he's always been a fan of karaoke, either. He's even agreed to share the stage with Fletcher! Dennis suggests they sing the Righteous Brothers. Can't wait to see that.

Podcast Bonanza

The guys know a little something about podcasts, so sometimes they like to critique what they find on the internet. This one is called The Volturi's Castle - A Twilight Podcast. These podcasts are broken up into episodes and some of them are two hours long! So today the guys listened to a mailbag episode, in which The CastleCrew, which consists of seven people, read an email from a friend of theirs critiquing their work. The guys didn't disagree with the critique, but they did have some of their own advice to add. For one, at least go back and edit out all the noise, like people adjusting their hoodies and petting their cats. And why are the episodes so long?? How could anyone love anything that much that they can talk about it for hours at a time? Well for one, their intro song is over a minute long. And they devote ENTIRE episodes to going in-depth on every single chapter of the book. Thrilling.

Steve DeOssie

Steve knows we don't have a lot of respect for the Miami Dolphins, but yesterday was still a big win. Moss and Brady had a great game, but this is still a pretty bad season. There are a lot of weird things going on. Should we be worrying about Indianapolis? Peyton Manning is head and shoulders above everyone else, but the team isn't that good. So yeah, he can do a lot, but he needs to do even more to win the Super Bowl. On the bright side, he is a funny guy. Randy Moss had the play of the game yesterday; that stiff-arm was unbelievable. But don't count on Moss being that wide open in the future.

Fletcher Plays Trombone

The guys have tickets to see Metric! All our callers have to do to win is identify the song Fletcher plays on his trombone. He hasn't played since high school so he's a little rusty, but we get the gist. Or we thought we did. Well, it took some time and a lot of spit on Ed, but Carol finally correctly identified "Angel of Harlem" by U2!

The guys all did traveling over the weekend. Fletcher even left the country and visited Barcelona! On the way to a bar, some good-looking guy walked out of the shadows and offered him free weed. He turned it down for a number of reasons, but he's wondering: do you take free drugs from strangers?

Charlie says it's not like puff-puff-pass. You can't take free bags of weed from strangers off the street. Who knows what's in there?! But our callers were pretty equally split today. Some of them say hey, it's free! Why not? But our more cautious callers say it's just not safe. What do you think?

Jason Reitman

Director Jason Reitman was in the studio this morning! George Clooney, who according to Jason is the coolest guy in the world, is in his new film Up in the Air. Poor Jason said this was the most insulting interview he's ever had after Ed admits he refuses to see Juno. Jason says, "Don't judge the movie until you've seen it... You've never seen the films that you don't like!" Finally, someone who stands up to Special Ed. But he's insulted once again when the guys play an interview in which he is described as a "large pompous load." Anyway, his new movie is being released in limited theaters December 4th and opens nationwide December 25th. This one has Ed's stamp of approval, in case you were wondering. But Jason says he'd rather not have it. Can't say I blame him.

Pop Trash

The guys aren't sure if they actually upset Jason Reitman during the interview. They maintain they do it for fun, but the whole thing may have turned sour when they played the audio of him being called a pompous load. Oh well, moving on to Sesame Street. People are upset about a new episode in which the characters mock a news source.

Indicted Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner has been reelected. Which T line is the sketchiest? All of them, according to today's Globe. Voters in Maine gave a resounding two thumbs down to a state law that would have allowed gay marriage. If you work for a small business, don't expect a holiday bonus this year... survey says, it's not going to happen. After complaints about a woman and her 15 feline friends, the town of Dudley has made it illegal to own more than three cats without first obtaining a residential kennel license. The GOP picked up Governor seats in Virginia and New Jersey.

What's on the Internets?

Rather than engaging with real people, Special Ed likes to surf the web. And he learns a lot during his travels. Most recently, he's learned that the word 'douchebags' is being reclaimed, which according to wikipedia is when a word that was once pejorative is brought back into acceptable usage. In light of Mayor Menino's reelection yesterday, the guys are wondering: Do you want change or would you rather just be comfortable? Look at Maine. It seemed residents were excited about possibly being the first state to legalize gay marriage by popular vote... and the they ended up voting to repeal it! The guys want to know, unless you're a gay person in Maine, how would this law really affect you? Why are people so afraid of change? Well, our Sandboxers aren't. They think we need it. And they are absolutely right.

Sketchy Public Transportation

An article in the Boston Globe today has revealed some troubling information about the MBTA. Apparently, they are $3 billion behind in maintenance projects. There are 51 projects total that have been left unattended and are considered a "danger to life or limb." This is a problem. And what's holding all of this up? Red tape. Money. Trains are getting old, they're falling apart. And there's no money to fix them or buy new ones. The T is going to kill you.

Pop Trash

Weezer's Rivers Cuomo wrote Adam Lambert's new song, "Pick U Up." He originally wrote it for Weezer, but when they didn't want to record it he gave it to Adam. Rivers says it's one of the best song he's ever written. It sounds like a combination of ABBA and Donna Summers... and a little bit of Rammstein. Has Rivers lost his mind? Ed says he's been like this all along, and he's genius. This guy can do no wrong and he probably has a closet full of music... he could write for anyone. And Ed thinks he's earned it. He's getting older now and he can kind of do his own thing. And that includes inviting random guests to sing along with him at shows. Like this one:

He even had Lil Wayne on the new album. He just doesn't care! And Ed's okay with that. But he starts to kind of agree that Rivers is crazy when he learns that Weezer has partnered with none other than Snuggie. Now when you order the new album Ratitude you could receive your very own Weezer Snuggie! Who wouldn't want that?

Adam Reilly

Adam is a staff writer at the Boston Phoenix who covers media and politics. The conversation goes back to the phone query earlier this morning: why would people rather stay comfortable and vote for the mac 'n' cheese Mayor Menino? People feel generally comfortable with Menino. So, Charlie wonders, Sam Yoon was the bacon in Menino's mac 'n' cheese? Adam says yes, but he still managed to help Flaherty in the end. And Adam is curious as to how these guys will stay relevant. The conversation then turns to Chuck Turner, who Adam says made a huge mistake a while ago when he unveiled photographs he claimed to portray the rape of Iraqi women. The photos, as it turned out, were actually taken from pornography websites. But he still got reelected! Does that make his constituents stupid? Adam says Turner appeals to a certain audience and there's a kind of blind trust going on.

Halford, Winter Songs - If you don't know who Rob Halford is, you shouldn't listen to the Sandbox. But what gives? The former lead singer of Judas Priest singing Christmas songs? Hmm... Rating: B&I, Bondage and Irony

Hell Rell, Hell Up In The Bronx (above) - In addition to some incoherent sampling, the production is spotty and nobody can figure what the hell anybody on this album is trying to say.

Morrissey, Swords - An album of B-Sides, but honestly, it sounds better than so much of the crap that's out today. Morrissey's still got it, people!

Greg Proops

You know him from Who's Line Is It Anyway...he's not the tall skinny one, he's not the short bald one, and he's not Wayne Brady. Greg is the host of the Science Channel game show Head Games, but claims that reading off of a teleprompter is really tough work. He's also the voice of Bob the Builder, so he has quite a nice following among the pre-adolescent crowd. While he was on the phone, he tested the Sandbox with a couple of Head Games questions, and needless to say, they didn't get too many of them right...

Qdoba Mega Robo Thunder Phone Query

The T has been in the news quite a bit lately because of all of those perverted gropers. This publicity has sparked a lot of discussion about all of the weird, sketchy happenings on the T. So we ask you...which T line is the sketchiest?

Andy Ference

Bruins defenseman and Sandbox regular Andy Ference called into the Sandbox tonight. Andy is in Detroit, and we can barely hear him over the rampant gunfire that plagues the city. We wonder if the team issues the players kevlar armor when they go to Detroit. A major criticism that the Bruins have received is that they can't string back to back wins together. Andy says that they just aren't scoring enough, even though they have the chances. Ed asks if Andy's shots either aren't accurate or hit hard enough - ouch! Maybe Ed will step in front of a Ference shot one day.

Pop Trash

Smoking has been banned indoors in the state of Rhode Island... unless you're Kevin Spacey. He was out dining with friends at an upscale restaurant, and an incident led to a waiter, Peter Turner, getting fired. This happened back in June, but Turner is now speaking out about it. Someone in Spacey's party was smoking, and after Turner repeatedly asked them to stop at the request of his manager, Spacey called Turner "an aggressive prick". Turner was fired (or as the management put it, laid off) a few days later.

So is this a case of Kevin Spacey being a dick? Probably, but the management is at fault here! You're firing someone for doing what they were told to do! A listener, who was on a plane with Spacey, phoned in to comment on how much of a jerk he was....but then, somebody else called in to say he was the nicest guy ever. Lots of conflicting views...interesting...

Callers had to guess which FNX song was being played as a child's lullaby without lyrics. It's not as easy as it seems, it took quite a long time for someone to guess correctly. Four elderly people have died because their life support cords choked them to death. Celtics remain perfect after their victory over New Orleans last night. An Oxycontin addiction is on the rise, so much so that Massachusetts has assembled an OxyContin and Heroin Commission to deal with the problem. Ryan Seacrest's 200 pound stalker was arrested on Friday when he tried to sneak into the E! Entertainment offices carrying a knife. Bruins fell to the Rangers last night. Happy 71st birthday to Pat Buchanan! This Is It is number one in earnings this week. President and Michelle Obama hosted 2,000 trick-or-treaters at the White House on Saturday. Weighing in at 222.5 pounds, the world's biggest meatball was created at Nonni's Italian Eatery in New Hampshire. Boston's Mayoral election is tomorrow. Gay marriage has lost in every state where it was put to a popular vote, but residents of Maine hope to make themselves an exception when they vote on Tuesday. The 21st slaughtered horse was discovered in Homestead, Florida over the weekend. Someone killed a cat with a bow and arrow last week; the Animal Rescue League of Boston is now offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the identification of the person responsible.

Fletcher Missed That Movie Too

We travel back in time this week to the year of Fletcher's birth with Staying Alive! ...Back when John Travolta was fit. This review was a challenge for Fletcher because he's never seen all of Saturday Night Fever... and he hates disco. The plot kind of reminds everyone of Breakin', as John Travolta's character, Tony, wants to become a dancer. And of course he's got this girl in his life named Jackie, who he works with. But when Jackie and Tony are no longer together, this new Laura girl jumps into the picture. She's also a dancer and lands herself and Tony a part on Broadway. Laura turns out to be this English bitch when she sleeps with Tony and then makes him leave! The soundtrack is very... 80's. And there's a lot of dancing. But at least Frank Stallone has a small part. And after things are resolved and everyone is happy, the movie ends with Tony just wanting to "strut." And strut he does, right out the door. Fletcher is giving this an S rating... and that is not for strut. This movie was absolutely terrible.

Steve DeOssie

Former Patriots player Steve DeOssie was on the air this morning to talk football. Patriots are coming up against the Dolphins this week, so was the break good for them? Steve says it probably gave them an opportunity to do some things, to get in extra work for some of the guys. The teams they've been playing against have been TERRIBLE; it's almost practice for the Pats. And that's a good chunk of the practice they'll get, because Belichick isn't going to work them too hard right now. The Patriots will probably beat the Dolphins, but Indianapolis will be a much better test of the Patriots' strength as a team.

Ed Time at the Apollo

We have more Metric tickets up for grabs! The game today is Ed Time at the Apollo! Special Ed performs a song and callers have to identify it. Man, does he have a nice voice. Anyway, congratulations to John from Somerville for correctly identifying Ed's cover! Have fun at the show!

Halloween was on Saturday and Charlie stayed home to hand out candy. Fletcher, on the other hand, makes sure he's not home so he doesn't have to deal with the children. This holiday isn't even for kids anymore! Our generation has completely taken it over; it's like Saint Patrick's Day with costumes. Adults have sucked all the fun out of it for kids. It used to be about candy and enjoyment, but now it's just about dressing up as a slut. So, are we ruining Halloween? Fletcher says no. Even if we are, he doesn't care. It's a ton of fun and everyone looks hotter in costume. Our listeners seem to agree -- Halloween has become New England's Mardi Gras and we're gonna keep living it up!

Allen Wastler

Allen Wastler, managing editor of CNBC.com, was on the phone this morning to talk about the economy! Are we heading out the recession? Allen thinks we still have some government funds coming our way. But we're probably going to have a weak dollar for some time. Our two big problems are jobs and credit. No one's offering any jobs and the banks still aren't lending money. They need to lend money to get the economy rolling. But there is good news! Only 20% of the $700 billion that was approved last February has been spent. So there's still money coming through the pipe. And that's something that could put us back on track. Unfortunately, the holidays this year won't help. We're probably going to see tumbleweeds blowing through the malls. There's a lot of shopping but not very much buying.

You have to be careful about what you put on the internet. Listen up all you children, just because it's YOUR personal MySpace page does not mean it's private. Two girls from an Indianapolis high school were banned from extracurricular activities after the school discovered pictures they posted online over summer break. In the photos in question, the girls are in lingerie, licking penis-shaped lollipops. The photos ended up in the hands of the principal, who then suspended the two students. The girls are now responding to the punishment with a lawsuit. Fletcher says if you put it up online, it's fair game. Don't put your private pictures on your MySpace! But Charlie and Ed agree -- that has nothing to do with the school.

Massachusetts Sick of Sexual Assault

Transit police are really cracking down on assault, so the MBTA has launched a new advertising campaign. The ad, hung all over the subway and buses, is targeted at sexual predators. The poster asks, "Can you identify the undercover police in this photo?" There are also ads meant to encourage victims to contact the police. One woman called in to tell us about her experience of getting groped on the bus. Everyone else on the bus just stood around and watched it happen. They didn't do anything! Luckily, this creep is now being taken to court. So maybe these ads are a good thing. Unfortunately, Fletcher points out, sexual predators probably won't even notice these ads. If you smoke cigarettes, do you care what the warning label says? Probably not.
