Jodi Lynn Picoult was born May 19, 1966. She wrote her first story at the age of five. She studied writing at Princeton University and graduated with a masters degree in education.

Jodi's novels centre on family, relationships, and the balance of love. Her novel, My sister's keeper, was made into a film in 2009 starring Cameron Diaz. She has been on the New York Times Best Seller list twice with Nineteen minutes and Change of heart.

Humorous mysteries - Tamar Myers

Tamar Myers was born and raised in the Congo. Her parents were missionaries. She grew up in a white family coexisting with the native tribes. Tamar lived with wild animals on her doorstep, eating hippopotamus, and staying safe from crocodiles, cobras and vicious driver ants. Boarding school was a two day drive away from home by truck.

Her family left the Congo after a few years of civil war, and settled in America. Tamar was sixteen, and suffering from severe culture shock, she attended her first American high school, never having used a telephone or vending machine or crossed the street at traffic lights. She wrote her first novel whilst still in college, but did not get published for another 23 years! Tamar writes with a sense of humor and is now the author of two series with witty and quirky characters, The Pennsylvania Dutch Mysteries & The Den of Antiquity Mysteries. She still lives in the USA .

The Time of my life - Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze born in Houston, Texas in 1952, died on the 14th September in Los Angeles, California, aged 57, from pancreatic cancer. Trained as a dancer, it was his acting roles in movies such as Dirty Dancing and Ghost that brought him to the public eye.

Patrick's autobiography, The time of my life, is to be released later this month. Co-written with his wife of 34 years Lisa Niemi, the book not only tells of his fight with cancer, but also his treatment for alcoholism after his father's death and the sudden death of his sister. Meeting as teenagers, Patrick and Lisa's love story is inspiring, their marriage a source of strength. Patrick Swayze's memoir is the story of a remarkable man's life and career and of his refusal to give in. Reserve a copy today, online, over the phone, or in person at Boronia Library.

Have you read the novel, The Julian Paradox, by local resident Kurt Otto Peterson? Well now you can see it on the big screen.

The Julian Paradox opens at the Astor Theatre in St. Kilda on September 1 at 8pm. Shot over 15 days in Chirnside and the Lysterfield Valley, this short film, featuring Australian actors John Stanton and Dennis Coard, tells the story of the love between a father (Roman Emperor Julius Caesar) and daughter (Dr Julia Kayser) separated by 2000 years.

Australian author - Wendy Harmer

Wendy Harmer is one of Australian’s best known comediennes. She has hosted top rating breakfast radio programs and appeared in many comedy festivals and television shows. Also a talented author, she writes plays and scripts for television and theatre, along with articles for newspaper and magazine columns.

Wendy has written a popular series of books for children featuring Pearlie an urban park fairy and her friends. She has also written a number of books for grown ups! Her most recent title, Roadside sisters, is about three women who take a road trip from Melbourne to Byron Bay. Her previous titles include the popular Farewell my ovaries, Love and punishment and Nagging for beginners. All Wendy's novels are available at the library.

Wendy was born in Yarram, Victoria, but now lives in Sydney with her family.

Master of Symbols - Dan Brown

Dan Brown was born in 1964 in New Hampshire USA. He is known world wide for his novel The Da Vinci Code, featuring the lead character Robert Langdon. It is the themes of Christianity, keys, codes, symbols and the questioning of historical and religious beliefs that have made his novel and subsequent movie so controversial. Brown says that The Da Vinci Code was an entertaining story that was able to promote religious discussion and debate.

In 1994 Dan began writing Digital Fortress, giving up his teaching career in 1996 to concentrate on his writing, this his first novel was published two years later. Next came his novels Deception Point and Angels and Demons, however it wasn’t until his 4th novel, The Da Vinci Code, was released that his other novels gained in success and popularity. Angels and Demons, recently made into a movie (2009), again features the character Robert Langdon played by Tom Hanks.

The Da Vinci Code is credited with being one of the most popular books of all time with 60.5 million copies sold worldwide (2006) (wikipedia).

His new novel The Lost Symbol is due for release in the USA in September.

Sherrilyn Kenyon was born in Georgia in 1965. She is a New York Times bestselling author and a leader in the popular paranormal fiction genre. She has also written historical novels under the pseudonym of Kinley MacGregor. Sherrilyn has a large international following with 20 million copies of her novels in print in 30 countries around the world.

Sherrilyn says she was born to be a writer, she wrote her first novel at the age of 7 - it was a horror story of a girl who killed off her brothers. Sherrilyn wrote her vampire stories even though they were originally rejected by her publisher, but her historical fiction was very popular. Her first title in the Dark Hunter series, now her most popular series, wasn’t published until 2002.

Frank McCourt dies

Pulitzer prize winner, Frank McCourt, died yesterday aged 78. He was best known for his autobiographical Angela's Ashes, the first of his three memoirs. Born in Brooklyn, New York, his family went back to Ireland during the Great Depression. Angela's Ashes (1996) covered his impoverished childhood in Limerick, Ireland. Returning to America at the age of 19, 'Tis (1999) was about his life as a new immigrant in America, and Teacher man (2005), his experiences as a young inexperienced teacher. His last book, Angela and the baby Jesus, a book for children, was published in 2007.

Author of the month - James Lee Burke

James Lee Burke was born in Texas, and attended the Southwestern Louisiana Institute where he received his degree in English, and later an M.A. from the University of Missouri.

He has worked in a variety of jobs including as a land surveyor, newspaper reporter, English Professor, social worker on Skid Row in Los Angeles, instructor in the U.S. Job Corps and clerk for the Louisiana Employment Service.

He has received a number of awards for his novels. Most recently his novel In the Electric Mist was made into a movie and released overseas.

His novel The lost get-back boogie was rejected many times over a nine year period, before finally being published by Louisiana University Press. The novel was then nominated for a Pulitzer prize.

Burke was awarded the title of Grand Master 2009 at the Edgar Awards, by the Mystery Writers of America, for his contributions to the field of mystery writing.

His new novel Rain Gods is now available, you can reserve your copy at the library.

There are different categories of awards including ones for older readers, younger readers, early childhood and for information books. Check out the 2009 Short List and see how many you can read. Who would you pick to win? Will the judges pick your favourite book?

The awards will be announced and presented on the Gold Coast on Friday, August 21.

Australian author - Christos Tsiolkas

Tsiolkas was born and grew up in Melbourne. He attended Blackburn High School and Melbourne University, where he was editor of the student newspaper Farago in 1988.

His novels include Loaded which was made into a feature film called Head-On, an attack on polite society and family traditions, The Jesus man, and Dead Europe. Dead Europe won the 2006 Age Fiction Prize and the Melbourne Best Writing Award.

His recent novel The Slap, has provoked passionate debate. Child psychologist John Redman says the book is prompting discussion and people are often confused about parenting. (The Herald Sun April 25 2009) Everyone has an opinion about Harry and did he have the right to slap Hugo.

Tsiolkas is also a play write, essayist and screen writer. He is presently negotiating film writes for his controversial book.

The Slap was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award 2009

Farewell David Eddings

Best selling fantasy author David Eddings passed away June 2nd at the age of 77. Eddings is best known for his The Belgariad series, and The Malloreon series. He was inspired by the success of The Lord of the Rings, and saw the fantasy genre as a good avenue for his writing.

Eddings was supposedly very old fashioned in that he never used a typewriter or computer and prefered to write his scripts long hand. His wife Leigh who was a regular contributor to his books died in 2007.

When asked in a recent interview what made his books so successful, he said it was his "characters who are as real as I can make them".
