This event took place at the Envoy Hotel’s roofdeck bar. We brought two fullsize heat presses so that we could press up a bunch of patches at once. The blank totes came in various colorways and had preprinted brand elements. On an opposite table, the patches were arranged by color and theme.

Guests chose their tote and then began picking which patches they wanted to place on their bag. Some guests stuck with a color theme while others decided to work with statement patches. You can see some of the selections below. We really enjoyed this one!

Our task for this event was to design graphics to be printed on 800 totebags in a four-hour event window. We can handle that output with our standard setup that uses four flash dryers and two presses. We had six staff members on site and made sure the venue could handle our power needs. There are many factors that can kill a live event. For us, the biggest one is not having the power you need to cure what you’re printing. Once we confirmed our power supply was all good, we got to work designing the totes and prepping the screens.

Initially, UO asked us to design the tote bags. The tight timeline only allowed us to print at the event.  The designs provided were super fun and we were nerding out over the collab’s design guidelines.

Our screen printing press is very portable. We fit the press, dryers, and staff right onto the retail floor. Our team printed about 300 totes at the launch party. Happy, caffeinated guests received new cute tote bags.

We needed to create some artwork for the Valentine’s Day Cards that would work for onsite screen printing. Our client set the tone with an moodboard from pinterest. We wanted the art to fit within this set but ultimately have our own style to it. In total, we created three designs that we could print within the tight layout of the activation space provided by Flexetail Trailers.

We were hoping to print these cards with plastisol ink because the activation was a few hours long. Keeping water-based inks open for that long would be pretty difficult. Just before the event we found out that the trailer couldn’t handle the output we needed to run our dryers. We pivoted to water-based inks and were really happy with the results.

We printed the cards flat and allowed our guests to make multiple prints on each card. The flat laydown of water-based inks ended up creating a better look on these cards. The overlaying inks interacted better together than they would have if they were plastisol. After the cards were printed, we created a score and folded the cards with a bone folder. The guests took envelopes with their cards and walked away with something to share with their Valentine.

Last fall, we had the opportunity to produce a live printing activation for the the Downtown Boston Alliance (DBA).

For this initial event, our task was to design interesting t-shirt graphics based on the supplied brand guidelines. These shirts would be live screen printed on-site at the brand launch.

• Garment: Dark heather grey t-shirts.
• Design Goal: We developed several design options using supplied assets, ensuring they were single-color graphics for efficient on-site screen printing.

Part II: Color Flows on Winter Street (November 2025)

The good folks at the DBA were kind enough to invite us back in November of 2025 to help with the closing party for Color Flows on Winter Street.

This was a fantastic series of block parties held in downtown Boston, featuring site-specific installations by the super-talented local artist, Massiel Grullon.

For this second live printing activation, we shifted our focus to posters. We were asked to create four unique poster designs using the visual assets Massiel used in her Winter Street mural.

• Design Challenge: Similar to the previous event, we remixed and interpreted the original artwork. The challenge was to execute these designs as single-color screen prints while on location.
• Technique: We experimented with different halftone techniques to mimic the beautiful color transitions present in Massiel’s original artwork.

Test prints are used by screen printers to see how an image looks before committing to an edition. Essentially, it’s a chance to check for pinholes and image integrity, to try out different colors and new inks. Many printers keep a stack of these test sheets in their studio and draw inspiration from the random images that accumulate. Test Print Tuesday embraces the style of the test print and the experimentation and happy accidents that are fundamental to the aesthetic.

Screen printing typically happens in schools, studios, and shops. As a result of this, it’s not easy to get access to a space where you can learn to print. And once you do have access, it takes a while to set everything up before you’re ready to pull a print. Test Print Tuesday aims to bridge the gap and allow you to walk in the room come try screen printing for yourself!

Neon Dream @ Hubweek

Hubweek is an amazing, multi-day festival that features artists, scientists, innovators, and some big corporate companies. Our primary role in 2017 was to create an installation that we called Neon Dream. It would be located inside of a 20′ shipping container. We decked our container out with high-powered black lights to create a surreal, neon experience. We added flourescent silkscreen wallpaper throughout the entire container, added black light animal portraits, a neon floral installation and even hand-silkscreened paper crystals by Helen of Trifecta. Here are some photos of the installation:

Live Screen Printing during the festival

To supplement our Neon Dream installation at Hubweek, we added a live screen printing activation. The live printing took place in the center of the festival grounds at Boston City Hall Plaza. Our container was located on the edge of the festival grounds, closer to city hall. As people came to our container, we told them about the live screen printing and vice versa.

Throughout the event, there were other artists painting murals on containers. The festival planners stacked multiple containers on top of each other to give this city within a city feel to the festival. Attendees were invited to add to giant glowing murals with fluorescent tape (ala Cyrille) or other provided art materials. The festival had a lot of creative energy and it totally came alive at night. Here you can see some of our favorite photos from the live screen printing portion of Hubweek.

We were given a lot of freedom from the Hubweek organizers. They allowed us to design all the graphics for the live screen printing event, provided they included the Hubweek logo somehow. Coming off creating all the art for our container, creating the T-shirt graphics went very quickly. We used a halftones image of our container, a hawk, owl and tiger image:

We worked together on planning the event and decided on orange, white and black tote bags and t-shirts. In the three hour print session we had, we created 150 totes and 150 tees. Our press was setup just across from the infamous Harvard Library and we had a beautiful fall New England day to print on campus. Here are some of our favorite photos from the event:

For this event, we set out to create 50 tote bags and 150 posters in the three hour event window. We chose to bring our Basic Setup to the event, which features one press and one dryer.
