Okay, the best compliment is probably "I play your game all the time and I love it."

Anyway, Flancrest Enterprises put up a webcast of their Mini Six game based on The Lil Guardians.

I haven't heard much yet, apart from the first one. They sound like a good group of guys - and I'd love to sit at their game table. They came up with a neat idea of attributes less than 1. I wish I'd thought of that, but they really demonstrate the best thing about the OpenD6 system. They developed their own rules right from the start.

Thanks guys!

We're Not Dead, Yet

We owe you guys a big apology, don't we?

We never update our site, we keep saying that "stuff is coming," but we never commit to when, and when we do it never happens...

Okay, that's why we won't say when. We're no good at scheduling.

You haven't seen the last from us though.

Things that are on our plate right now:

Mini Six: Okay this one's been all over the map. We've changed course several times with the direction of the project. In the immediate future we're releasing a better formatted copy (I know you've heard that before), with some rule changes intended to speed up play. We'll be able to indicate OpenD6 compatibility this time, and we'll also have an online Mini Six System Reference Document.

We're going to Gencon: Phil and I will be at the convention, not that we'll have a booth (or anything to sell), but we'd like to meet up with fans of Old School Gaming and OpenD6. Let us know if you're attending, maybe we can meet for a beer!

Things We Plan to Do: (After Gencon)

Campaign Settings for Mini Six, including Antares: Yes, yes. Antares is the one I've been working on, and Phil has been working on a supers mini-setting.

Kedmere / Old School Gaming: A few expansions in the fall and possibly a full length adventure module for Halloween.

We also have about a hundred things we want to do "someday." We shouldn't get ahead of ourselves though.

Preview Map of Planet Antares (Antares Design Diary #0)

Antares will be a setting using the Mini Six rules. There's not much to say about it yet, but I thought I'd share a bit of what I worked on this weekend.

I was inspired by this map of Mongo I saw on the internet:

I love the old-school pulp comic flair.

That led to this, which is in progress:

Names and details are likely to change, but just the labels on the map is enough to set the tome. I like to start off with something like this to inspire the rest of a work. Heck, I usually even build custom playlists of music to listen to while I'm working.

Antares will be a "Sword and Planet" style setting. Obviously, it will pay homage to classic pulp settings, but it won't be a straight-up clone.

If it weren't for the snow storm looming in the real world, I'd have more to post in the next few days. Unfortunately, I'm the guy who will be snowed in at work while everyone else is snowed in at home.

I'll probably get lots of inspiration for Hyperborea over the next few days.

A minor milestone, 2000 downloads of Mini Six!

When we started monkeying around with Mini Six, it was just to help explain the basics of the system to a few fellow gamers who'd never played West End Game's D6 system. Then it quickly turned into something more to us.

We never expected more than a few dozen people to download it at most.

Thanks for helping us get to 2000 downloads!

Yes, we know the formatting is downright ugly. That's going to be fixed. We're also going to add art, streamline it a bit more, and have a few surprises planned. The waiting is harder for us than anyone, I assure you.

It won't be too long now.

Zombies Ate My Best Man! A Mini Six scenario by Ryan Rotuna.

Ryan Rotuna, an all around cool dude, built a scenario with Mini Six in mind. Not only did he create a scenario, he made the slickest Mini Six character sheet date, but then he said to himself "not enough."

So he included a map. Then he said "Still not enough."

So he created fold-up paper miniatures and packed in a grid!

We love your style, Mr. Rotuna.

Download it here or on the Mini Six page. Believe it or not but the luxurious APG headquarters didn't come staffed with anyone who has any experience at all in the games industry. ;)

So, a snazzy version of Mini Six is being worked on, but we're not projecting a release date because we don't know what to expect.

We're not reinventing the wheel, we've just never seen one before.

In Progress

AntiPaladin Games Needs Artists

AntiPaladin Games is looking for artwork for Mini Six. It will be used twice. Once in a stand alone Mini Six Core Rules booklet and in an expanded book version that will include settings. We are not looking for artwork for the settings at this time. The cover will be full color while all interior art will be black and white, with line drawings preferred for the interior.

What we are looking for includes:

1 Full Color Cover = $150

1 half page piece = $50

6 quarter page pieces = $30/ea

We would like the cover to reflect the multi-genre options presented by Mini Six. We are thinking this can accomplished by it being divided into several panels, each depicting a different genre. Each panel itself will require a moderate amount of detail but does not need to be very complex.

The half page piece would be a character line-up/grouping. Including images such as a knight, a 1930’s pulp hero, a humanoid robot, a werewolf, a post-apocalypse/cyberpunk protagonist, superhero, and an alien.

Quarter pages include:

A spaceship (like a starfighter)

Two wizards dueling (done as two separate panels that would be layed out diagonally on opposing pages) These would have to be done as a pair.

A collection of character gear across multiple genres (sword, ray gun, walkie talkie, shield, etc.)

Scaling Example = Big Monster destroying a city with tiny airplanes attacking. Think king kong, Godzilla.

Gamers playing at a table

We pay half on the initial sketch and the other half on completion. We will make payment via PayPal.

Email us at antipaladingames@gmail.com

Update: I know this doesn't look good on our part, but the specification may change on the cover art. It's been pointed out to us that it may be too jumbled / distracting (not in a good way). We're open to ideas from artists and other friends on the cover.

Also, the response has been much better than expected! I wish we had enough assignments for everyone. Ray and I plan on doing the gut-wrenching choosing part next Sunday or within a few days after... ten days tops. (We usually only get Sundays to work on APG stuff.)

I have good news and bad news about that.

Right around the holidays we dropped the ball on getting that done. There's been no progress for several weeks.

When I started out, I bit off more than I could chew. I was doing much more than just reformatting the text, I started a significant rewrite to a more traditional format.

The reason we did this at all was so that we could put out some of the setting ideas we had, and a major rewrite on the scale I was looking at started to look like a major distraction from that goal.

The plan at the moment is a minor rewrite. Just polish the text a bit, and re-flow the text to a more traditional format that's a bit easier on the eyes.

There will be a few other changes, too.

In an RPG, everything is optional. That's rule 0 of every game, whether it's explicitly stated in the rules or not. So you're going to find less language stating that this or that is optional. Everything is optional. Mini Six isn't even technically a game, it's a rules set. Rules with no setting isn't quite a game.

We intend to fix that too. Mini Six is and always will be a rules set, but we're more excited with getting our settings out there. We don't have anything to announce right now, just an intention.

Something we've learned along the way is not to give out public deadlines. So there's not one. Mini Six will be reformatted soon, which I'm sure isn't a very satisfying answer.

But it's going to get done quite a bit sooner than it would have if I had held on to my original plan.

APG wants to stand with the OpenD6 community, not apart from it.

In private, and in public, there has been some discussion of the future of OpenD6.

It's not AntiPaladin Game's intention to splinter the OpenD6 community. We want to help it grow. As soon as there is a Standard Trademark License (STL) for OpenD6, we'll gladly join the fold.

But that's something beyond our control at the moment.

There is an Open D6 project at Open D6 Resurrection and there is also Six Sided Fantasy, which doesn't use the terms OpenD6 or Open D6 to describe itself, (but it is OGL.)

Someday soon, there will be a central hub for the OpenD6 community at OpenD6.com (currently a placeholder site.)

We've seen no challenge leveled to the use of the terms D6 or OpenD6 or Open D6 from the trademark owner, West End Games, and we don't have any reason to believe that there ever will be one. It doesn't seem to be of much concern to anyone, and I can see that point of view. It's got some common sense going for it. The trademark owner doesn't appear to be troubled by the issue, although I believe Mr. Gibson has implied that he is interested in releasing the STL for OpenD6 in the future.

The fact that there could theoretically be one is all that keeps us apart from the community. That probably seems a bit asinine to some. I can grant that. It is asinine.

But that's just the way it is until the STL is available.

Let's play a game of what if. What if the STL isn't released soon? What if WEG were to change hands at some time in the future without getting around to releasing the STL? (I haven't heard anything to indicate that it will, we're just playing what if.) What if the new trademark owner didn't have a friendly philosophy regarding the use of his newly acquired property?

That is the situation we're protecting ourselves from, as unlikely as it may be.

The teams involved with all of the above mentioned sites and companies are our brothers and sisters in the community. We'll be at your side as soon as we can.

Two New Old School Releases: Crossroads and Terrors of Pellamshire

Two Old School Fantasy releases. The Crossroads and Terrors of Pellamshire.

From The Crossroads of Pellamshire:

Pellamshire was a wealthy realm, blessed with
good timber and plentiful crops which were
exported far. This prosperity came to an end
when the baroness was called by the king to
aid in a grand crusade. As a loyal lord and a
skilled warrior she gladly accepted. Arming
herself with magic gifts crafted by her husband
the Grand Squire, she set out on the South
Road; never did she return.

The Terrors of Pellamshire details three new monsters, the Hangman's Tree, the Murder Crow, and the Pact demon, and details one classic challenge, the Siren.

New APG Blog (with RSS Feed)

We'll be updating our news here and on Twitter for now on. We are working on a clarified Mini Six with an easier to read layout.

A Few Early Releases

Phil and I have been doing one and two page mini projects lately. They're so much fun that we have a list of dozens that we want to do.

Our first project was The Principality of Kedmere, a small nation that could be used as the backdrop to a campaign. We learned quite a bit by doing this one, especially after receiving some constructive criticism over at the Goblinoid Games Labyrinth Lord Forum.

Kedmere is technically system neutral, but we're writing with Labyrinth Lord in mind.

Our second release The Lonely Realm, was much smaller. I've been thinking about the concept of mini worlds lately. Most people would rightly see it as an adventure backdrop more than a campaign setting. It's a first stab at an idea I'll probably come back to later. The Lonely Realm is really a stand alone project by definition, although it could connect through the magic gate to any world (including the world that Kedmere lies in.)

Ill Gotten Goods answers the question "what does the NPC have in his pockets?" Actually, that's not entirely true... some things on the chart could never fit in someone's pocket, but might be something a thief could nab.

Our fourth project, The Fair Realm of Oelvane details a dying elven forest and the nearby lands. It is an expansion of the same world that holds Kedmere, but as written you could use either one without using the other.

Our next release should be a new monster, the Hex Spider which we mentioned in Oelvane, will be our first release requiring the OGL.

All of these and more can be found in Old School Fantasy.
