Glass Christmas Ornament History

Originally Christmas trees were decorated with fruit, popcorn, and candy canes. The first Christmas ornaments were called glass baubles, and they were first made in Lauscha, Germany by Hans Greiner in the 19th century. Greiner made garlands of glass beads similar to other garlands strung on trees at the time.

Other glassblowers in Lauscha recognised the growing popularity of Christmas baubles and began producing them in a wide range of designs.

In the 1840's, after a picture of England's Queen Victoria's Christmas tree was shown in a London newspaper decorated with glass ornaments and baubles from her husband's native Germany, Lauscha began exporting its products throughout Europe.

Vintage Christmas Light Reflectors

One item that would help create a vintage looking Christmas tree is a collection of vintage Christmas tree aluminum light reflectors. Vintage Santa Claus Christmas Lights

One of my personal favorite vintage Christmas light types are the Santa Claus shaped light bulbs and strings of light bulbs. Vintage Christmas lights are also available in other Christmas character shapes. I just love the look of the little Santa Claus heads, floating in the branches of the Christmas tree, amidst the vintage ornaments.

These light bulbs are usually made of glass or plastic, which are often hand painted, on milk glass or opaque glass, although you can also find them in plastic. You can also find vintage Santa Claus head covers to fit over modern light bulb strings. These add a lot of fun ambiance to your vintage Christmas tree. And they are also reasonable in price from about $10.00 to $20.00.

Vintage Gold and Gold Plated Charms

Several decades ago, gold was not quite as expensive as it is today, and many vintage charms were made from gold. My mother has a gold charm bracelet with charms from her travels that she collected over several years time. This is typical of charm bracelets, each charm representing an event or occasion. In my mother's case, her bracelet's charms represent the places that she visited.

My grandmother had a gold charm bracelet that had a charm representing each of her grandchildren, that were engraved with our birthdates. However, the charms do not have to be on a bracelet. Each charm can be a necklace or earring in itself, representing something new to each person.

1940's Mahogany Furniture

If you are not familiar with mahogany, it is a beautiful wood that is medium to dark in tone with a distinct red or purple red cast. When searching for vintage and antique floor lamps online, it is a good idea to narrow down the style and time period that you are looking for. You can search by year, by decade, by style, and by designer.

Vintage Pole Lamps

One of my favorite lamp styles from the 60's and 70's is the pole lamp. The floor lamp was a pole that ran from floor to ceiling with it being braced between the floor and ceiling on a spring set. Most of the pole lamps of the era had a thin wooden base with three shade around the lamp that could be directed in different directions.

Other interesting vintage lamps styles are Tiffany lamps which are beautiful stained glass shades usually on a filigreed metal slender pole, and several art deco styles throughout several decades.

Antique Vintage Bridge Lamps

Antique vintage bridge lamps are a very beautiful and unusual looking lamp, most often made from metal--brass, cast iron, or bronze. The lamp has a straight pole with a wider base, either square or round. Then at the top of the lamp pole the lamp forms a "bridge" to the lighted shade or shade cone. These lamps resemble the Victorian era street lamps more than anything else.

Quite often the base of the lamp will match the style of the bridge, elegant scrolling, and curving designs.

Vintage Lampshades

Vintage and antique lamps often have very interesting lamp shades as well. Lamp shades were made from many different materials, but glass lamp shades are very common in antique lamps. Glass lamp shades would diffuse and spread the light, and could withstand the very hot bulbs inside the lamp.

The most unique are Tiffany style lamps which are made from stained glass, but lamp shades are available in a lot of shapes including scallop bell shapes, globe shapes, and a flat dish shape to name a few.

Collecting Porcelain Tea Pots

With the more casual mode of living in our generation, we have lost some of the most elegant parts of social history. One of the big losses was the loss of tea time here in the United States. I remember my grandmother sitting down to tea once a day, but my mother does not do this, nor do I. Tea time is an art form or ritual, as well as a time to relax and gather with friends or family. One of the most fun ways to have a beautiful hat collection of your own is to buy vintage hats and refurbish or add to them. To give a spring hat a longer wearing season, it is best to choose a hat made of a lightweight material like straw, that will keep your face shaded without making you hot.
