SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 29, 2010 – McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE) today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately owned tenCube, the provider of the WaveSecure mobile security service. Adding WaveSecure’s locate, lock, back-up and wipe technology to Trust Digital’s enterprise mobility management and McAfee’s mobile security technology, gives McAfee the capabilities it needs to deliver the industry’s most complete next generation mobility platform. McAfee will now have a single platform, from the consumer to the enterprise, to address the management and security of all devices types, to all markets and with the most robust feature set.

People today are 15 times more likely to lose their phones than their laptop. Device loss is currently the most worrisome and likely security incident that consumer mobile users face today. Losing the device means losing personal data like pictures, contacts and personal financial information. It also means losing the ability to communicate and the value of the device. Through this acquisition, McAfee plans to offer users of all sizes the broadest platform available and the easiest and most flexible way to remotely control their mobile device. The acquisition is expected to help McAfee:

According to Ericsson, there will be 50 billion IP connected devices in 2020, up from 1 billion today. With the proliferation of these devices comes the need to secure and manage them—whether it’s the value of the device itself, protection from theft and data loss, or meeting compliance requirements set forth by the user’s employer.

“There has been a tremendous amount of innovation in the past year with smartphones and other mobile devices, which really puts McAfee at a tipping point,” said Todd Gebhart, executive vice president of consumer, mobile and small business. “With our more than 20 years of expertise in securing the endpoint, nearly a decade of experience securing mobile devices and a vast partner ecosystem, we are well positioned to out innovate and deliver the broadest mobile platform available.”

“Mobile devices have become an extension of our lives,” said Darius Cheung, chief executive officer, tenCube. “Through this acquisition, McAfee can broaden its security capabilities and offer users protection and remote control of the phone whether it is in their possession or not. This means no more worries about the whereabouts of your phone or losing personal contacts, photos or messages.”

The WaveSecure security service for consumers allows users to remotely control their devices, manage the data on their phones, ensure privacy in the event of device theft or loss and enhance the possibility of recovering the phone. McAfee also plans to offer a child locator service, using the unique technology from WaveSecure.

If a phone is lost, the WaveSecure service lets users remotely locate the phone and pinpoint its location. If the phone’s been stolen, they can remotely lock it and/or wipe all of the personal data from the device and its external memory cards. The phone will automatically go into lock-down mode if it is used with an un-authorized wireless account and inform a user’s emergency contact of its location. WaveSecure locked phones show a permanent message on the screen explaining how to return the phone to its owner. The application also lets users automatically back-up and restore all of the data stored on their phone including text messages and their address book.

The WaveSecure mobile service is provided by tenCube, which is primarily located in Singapore. Its mobile technology is currently available in English, Chinese and Indonesian. Following the completion of this proposed acquisition; McAfee expects to broaden language support and couple the service with McAfee’s endpoint protection and cloud capabilities.

The acquisition is expected to close in August of 2010. For additional information, please reference the acquisition landing page at www.mcafee.com

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 29, 2010 – McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE) today reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2010.

        Second Quarter 2010 Financial Highlights:

        Executive Commentary:

“For the second quarter we’re proud to report another strong quarter and are especially pleased to see the solid non-GAAP earnings per share, strong operating cash flow, coupled with solid consumer and corporate bookings,” said McAfee president and chief executive officer Dave DeWalt.

“Despite foreign currency headwinds, we improved operating leverage resulting in better than expected non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.63 and we generated operating cash flow of $134 million, attesting to the strength of our business model. Our financial foundation is set for continued growth with leading solutions, a world class sales force and the strongest partner relationships in our history. We also saw an all time record of consumer revenue in the quarter. We were extremely pleased to be able to extend our relationship with our two largest OEM partners and to see a near record quarter of multi-million dollar orders from our corporate customers,” continued DeWalt.

        Corporate Business:

        Consumer Business:

        North America:

        International:

Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Summary:

        Key Announcements:

        Financial Outlook:

        Conference Call Information:

Disclosure Statements and Discussion of Non-GAAP Financial Measures:

Management evaluates and makes operating decisions using various performance measures. In addition to reporting financial results in accordance with GAAP, we also consider adjusted net revenue, gross profit, operating income and net income, which we refer to as “non-GAAP net revenue,” “non-GAAP gross profit,” “non-GAAP operating income” and “non-GAAP net income.” In calculating non-GAAP net revenue, non-GAAP gross profit, non-GAAP operating income and non-GAAP net income, management adjusts for certain items to facilitate its review of the comparability of the company’s operating performance on a period-to-period basis because such items are not, in management’s review, related to the company’s ongoing operating performance.

Non-GAAP net revenue primarily includes prior period deferred revenue that was originally scheduled to be recognized in the second quarter of 2010 from the balance sheet but became delayed until future periods because of the remediation actions taken related to the antivirus signature file update we released on April 21, 2010 that impacted some of our customers’ computers (“DAT 5958”).

Non-GAAP gross profit excludes expenses related to our DAT 5958 remediation actions, amortization of purchased technology, stock-based compensation expense and certain other items. Non-GAAP net income and non-GAAP operating income exclude expenses related to our DAT 5958 remediation actions, amortization of purchased technology and intangibles, stock-based compensation expenses, acquisition-related costs, restructuring charges, provision for income taxes and certain other items.

Management used a 24 percent non-GAAP effective tax rate to calculate non-GAAP net income in 2010 and 2009. Management believes the 24 percent effective tax rate is reflective of a long-term normalized tax rate under the global McAfee operating structure.

We present non-GAAP net revenue because we believe it provides supplemental information that shows the financial impact of the remediation actions taken related to DAT 5958. We present non-GAAP gross profit, non-GAAP operating income and non-GAAP net income because we consider each to be an important supplemental measure of our performance. Management uses these non-GAAP financial measures to make operational and investment decisions, to evaluate the company’s performance and to forecast and to determine compensation. Further, management utilizes these performance measures for purposes of comparison with its business plan and individual operating budgets and allocation of resources. In addition, when evaluating potential acquisitions, management adjusts for the items described above in its evaluation of target performance.

We further believe that these non-GAAP financial measures are useful to investors in providing greater transparency to the information used by management in its operational decision making. We believe that calculating non-GAAP net revenue, non-GAAP gross profit, non-GAAP operating income and non-GAAP net income also facilitates a comparison of McAfee’s underlying operating performance with that of other companies in our industry, which may from time to time use similar non-GAAP financial measures to supplement their GAAP results. However, non-GAAP net revenue, non-GAAP gross profit, non-GAAP operating income and non-GAAP net income have limitations as analytical tools, and you should not consider these measures in isolation or as a substitute for GAAP net revenue, GAAP gross profit, GAAP operating income and GAAP net income or any other performance measure determined in accordance with GAAP. In the future, we expect to continue to incur expenses similar to certain of the non-GAAP adjustments described above and exclusion of these items in the presentation of our non-GAAP financial measures should not be construed as an inference that all of these costs are unusual, infrequent or non-recurring. Investors and potential investors are cautioned that there are material limitations associated with the use of non-GAAP financial measures as analytical tools. Some of the limitations in relying on non-GAAP net income are:

In addition, many of the adjustments to our GAAP financial statements result in the exclusion of items that are recurring and will be reflected in the company’s financial results for the foreseeable future. The company compensates for these limitations by providing specific information regarding the GAAP amounts excluded from the non-GAAP financial measures. The company further compensates for the limitations of our use of non-GAAP financial measures by presenting comparable GAAP measures more prominently. The company evaluates the non-GAAP financial measures together with the most directly comparable GAAP financial measure.

Investors and potential investors are encouraged to review the reconciliation of non-GAAP financial measures contained within this press release with our GAAP net revenue, gross profit, operating income and net income. For more information, see the consolidated statements of income and the “Reconciliation of GAAP to Non-GAAP Financial Measures” contained in this press release.

        Forward-Looking Statements:

This release contains forward-looking statements within the meaning of Section 27A of the Securities Act of 1933 and Section 21E of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. Forward looking statements include statements regarding the preliminary results for the quarter ended June 30, 2010; guidance on expected results for the third quarter of 2010; and tax rates for 2010. Forward looking statements also include statements about the demand for and value of McAfee’s security solutions and McAfee’s financial foundation, business strategy, business model, market positioning, relationships, opportunities, and continued growth. Actual results could vary, perhaps materially, and the expected results may not occur. In particular, actual results are subject to other risks, including that the negative impact of foreign currency fluctuations may exceed McAfee’s estimate; the financial impact and reputational harm associated with McAfee’s release in the second quarter of an antivirus signature file update that impacted some of its customers’ computers may have some residual impact that exceeds McAfee’s estimate. McAfee may not achieve its planned revenue realization rates or sales targets, succeed in its efforts to grow its business or combat effectively the security threats of the future, build upon its technology leadership, leverage its relationships and opportunities to the degree expected, capture market share, notwithstanding related commitment or related investment, or successfully repurchase stock under its stock repurchase program. McAfee may not benefit from its acquisitions, strategic alliances, partnerships or stock repurchase program as anticipated; customers may not respond as favorably as anticipated to the company’s product or technical support offerings; the company’s product and service offerings may not continue to interoperate effectively with operating systems causing delayed or lost sales or increased expenses; the company may experience delays in product development or the release of previously announced products; the company may experience delayed or lost sales and revenue as a result of outages in integrated systems on which it is highly dependent; the company may not satisfactorily anticipate or meet its customers’ needs or expectations; or the industry shift to security suites may not be adopted to the extent anticipated. Actual results are also subject to a number of other factors, including customer and distributor demand fluctuations, currency fluctuations, and macro and other economic conditions both in the United States and internationally, including the adverse global economic conditions. The company may experience further declines in the fair value of its investment securities or realize losses relating to other than temporary declines in its investment securities given adverse global economic conditions. The forward-looking statements contained in this release are also subject to other risks and uncertainties, including those more fully described in McAfee’s filings with the SEC including its quarterly report on Form 10-Q for the period ended March 31, 2010. McAfee does not undertake to update any forward looking statements.

Owners of iPhones are one step closer to taking total control of their widgets, after the U.S. Copyright Office announced the practice of “jailbreaking” legal, on Monday, July 26th. Now, anyone can jailbreak or unlock any cell phone without fear of legal repercussions. BitDefender®, an award-winning provider of innovative internet security solutions, is today advising iPhone unlocking fans to pay particular attention to the software they download for this operation.

BitDefender has identified a malware distribution campaign in which users receive an email where they find out they could receive a new application for iPhone jailbreaking. All the email recipient has to do is click a link that will take them to the webpage where the desired software awaits.

As the email recipient goes further into this labyrinth and clicks the link, an exe file attempts to download to their computer. But once saved and run, the executable opens the way for a Trojan.

Identified by BitDefender as Trojan.Generic.3010833, this piece of malware is a keylogger that transmits everything the user writes on the computer to a specific email address, in this particular case to directory[REMOVED]@hotmail.com.

This allows the malware creators to intercept the victim’s visited sites, usernames, passwords, and bank accounts information – such as pin number, bank account numbers, passwords, etc.

In order to stay safe, BitDefender recommends that users never open suspicious links or attachments without scanning them first. It’s also advised to install and update a complete antimalware software solution.

About BitDefender®
BitDefender is the creator of one of the industry’s fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified security software. Since its inception in 2001, BitDefender has continued to raise the bar and set new standards in proactive threat prevention.
Kaspersky Lab announces the publication of its spam report for the second quarter of 2010. According to the report, one of the most significant events in the last quarter was an unprecedentedly large mass mailing that used HTML-based threats in the form of emails disguised as legitimate notifications from social networks.

An email was distributed that was made to look like a notification from social networks, email providers and popular websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Amazon, Windows Live, YouTube, Skype, and Wikipedia. These emails were very reminiscent of phishing attempts. However, if a user clicked on the link, they would be taken to a hacked site, from where a malicious script would then be downloaded.

Most often, these links used Trojan-Downloader.JS.Pegel.S, a Trojan that was the most common malicious program found in all unwanted correspondence during the second quarter. These types of Trojans are HTML pages that contain scenarios written in JavaScript. Trojan downloaders are designed to redirect users to a cybercriminal’s webpage containing both advertising content and malicious code that will be downloaded onto the user’s computer. Trojans from the ‘Redirector’ family also behave in the same manner.

A total of three Trojan downloaders were present in the Top 10 during the second quarter. Prior to the June attack, none of these email threats had ranked among the Top 10. This change clearly indicates a planned spam attack.
The USA went firmly into the lead this quarter with 15% of all spam emanating from there, while India remains a steady second place with 8.5%. Vietnam climbed two places to come in third in the chart. However, there was plenty of jockeying for position throughout the quarter. In April, the USA, India, and Vietnam were neck and neck with 12.3%, 11.7%, and 11.6% respectively, while in May, the USA unequivocally stepped into the lead with 20.8% of all spam.
Quite unexpectedly, Italy (3.3%) and Spain (2.8%) joined the Top 10 sources of spam. Last quarter, these countries were ranked a lowly 14th and 15th place respectively on the chart. Furthermore, the amount of unwanted correspondence originating in Latin America increased to 16.3% of the total spam content.

As Kaspersky Lab predicted some time ago, phishers are increasingly focusing their efforts on social and entertainment websites. In addition to PayPal, eBay, and HSBC, the other top phishing targets included Facebook with 6.03% and the Google email system with 2.84%.

PLEASANTON, Calif. & SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 28, 2010 – Marking yet another category-defining innovation for telepresence, Polycom, Inc. (Nasdaq:PLCM) and McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE) today announced a framework for a global strategic alliance to jointly develop and deliver Secure Unified Communications and Collaboration (UCC). With security threats on the rise, Polycom and McAfee are taking a proactive approach to further enhance the security features of Polycom’s video, telepresence and infrastructure solutions. Polycom plans to design solutions that feature McAfee threat protection, shielding Polycom telepresence users, from the desktop to the fully immersive suite, from potential and increasingly sophisticated security threats while making it easier to comply with privacy and confidentiality mandates.

The alliance will address a growing need for enhanced security as organizations of all sizes increasingly turn to video conferencing and telepresence to reduce costs, improve productivity, and maintain operations in the face of business disruptions. The enhanced protections can also help IT managers in regulated industries – from health care to financial services – lessen the burden of meeting compliance and reporting requirements.

“Faster networks and a growing desire among enterprises to transform their work environments via telepresence have placed video collaboration at a tipping point,” said Andrew Miller, Polycom president and CEO. “This makes the need to provide Secure Unified Communications and Collaboration solutions an urgent one, and that’s why we’re partnering with McAfee.”

Miller added, “We’re pleased to incorporate acclaimed McAfee threat protection solutions into the Polycom product line. We want to provide a secure, end-to-end environment that protects telepresence and video collaboration for our customers, which is an increasingly important component of unified communications.”

“Working with Polycom to deliver on the vision of a Secure Unified Communications and Collaboration environment fits perfectly with our mission to help users safely communicate and collaborate wherever they may be,” said David DeWalt, president and CEO of McAfee. “With its dedication to open standards and flexible, easy-to-use solutions, Polycom continues to demonstrate that it puts customers first by offering protection of custom-integrated McAfee-based security solutions.”

The alliance has three main areas of collaboration: joint research and development, sales and market alignment, and participation in activities promoting innovation and standardization of UC security solutions.

The two companies will join R&D forces to:

McAfee and Polycom will support joint go-to-market activities including:

The joint effort introduces McAfee into the ecosystem of technology leaders participating in the Polycom Open Collaboration Network – an alliance of industry innovators whose best-of-breed solutions enable anytime, any device collaboration across a range of enterprise platforms.

Earlier this month “VirusBlokAda” reported about StuxNet, the first exploit using the .LNK vulnerability (Windows Shortcut) in all of Microsoft operating systems.

Malware may compromise any Windows operating system by exploiting the way file managers, (also 3rd party file managers like Total Commander), displays icons. Specially crafted shortcuts use this vulnerability to execute malware.

W32/Stuxnet was the first malware using this vulnerability to “attack” SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) systems from Siemens, using a default password to access the SQL based database. Clearly a targeted attack.

Updates about this particular vulnerability

Microsoft has issued an updated version of their advisory, ver.1.2, Microsoft Security Advisory (2286198).

At first the spreading vector was reported to be local USB drives only. As more research have been made by both Microsoft and other partners in the MAPP (Microsoft Active Protection Program) we see that there are several other spreading vectors. Basically, most of the spreading vectors that other malware use, is viable.

In addition to USB drives these would typically be:

Network drives
The malicious shortcut file can for example be copied to any network drive, along with the malware. Any Windows user accessing this drive can get compromised, and may spread the shortcut file to other network drives where they have access.

WebDav
Web servers can be used to spread crafted shortcuts to visiting computers, compromising the operating system and potentially leaving them open to be further compromised by droppers or downloaders.

Documents
Microsofts latest advisory also list Microsoft Office documents as a spreading vector. Basically all file formats that provide files to be embedded may be used as a spreading vector, i.e. archive files ZIP or RAR.

Known malware exploiting the .LNK vulnerability

W32/Stuxnet
W32/Zbot
W32/Dulkis
W32/Autorun.BJZ
W32/Autorun.BJZJ

All Norman’s product will detect and remove these malware.

We expect more malware which utilizes the .LNK vulnerability to appear very soon. It also seems safe to assume that more advanced malware variants will come along, combining the .LNK vulnerability with even more targeted and generalized malware.

Known fixes or workarounds

Disable .LNK and .PIF file functionality manually or automatically by using the “Fix it for me” button at this Microsoft web page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2286198#FixItForMe

[Note that in this particular case with the .LNK vulnerability, vendors' patching ability may not apply as usual. This vulnerability is in the design of the functionality itself and may not be regarded as a bug. Changing a function may take some time.]

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces that Kaspersky PURE has received the Product of the Year Award after successful testing conducted by experts from the respected Danish Internet portal Hardware-Test.dk.

Following the tests the portal’s specialists were amazed at the level of protection offered by Kaspersky PURE. “I’m excited by Kaspersky PURE. Kaspersky Lab has really raised the bar with this program”, says Kurt Bøgh Larsen, Senior Technical Tester at Hardware-Test.dk. “You install the program as it is and it will run smoothly without you even noticing it. The program doesn’t warn you repeatedly and that’s exactly what I expect from an Internet security solution.”

The test was conducted on an older computer with an Intel Celeron processor, but that proved no problem for the Kaspersky Lab product. “Kaspersky PURE was tested on an outdated machine that doesn’t possess too much power, because this way you get to see the difference between the older antivirus programs and the new ones much better. Kaspersky PURE ran perfectly, consumed minimal system resources and proved very effective. The product was a real pleasure to test.” the review states.

http://hwt.dk is one of the Denmark’s oldest and biggest independent IT hard and software test portals, with more than 200,000 visitors monthly.

According to June’s spam report issued by Kaspersky Lab, PayPal is the unsurpassed leader when it comes to being targeted: in June, the number of attacks on this e-pay system rose by 20 percentage points compared to May’s figure. Facebook and HSBC swapped positions again, to become third and fourth place respectively, while the popular online game World of Warcraft also made it into the Top 10.

Three new countries – Brazil, Columbia and Spain – joined the ranks of the Top 5 prime distributors of spam. However, the USA and India maintained their leading positions in the rating. In general, Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries are widely represented in the Top 20 most active sources of spam.

A new trend has shown up in malware contained in mail traffic – the number of malicious programs that work on the Win32 platform is decreasing, whilst conversely, the share of HTML is growing. The majority of malicious programs in June’s Top 10 were HTML pages written in JavaScript. This led to users being redirected to websites containing spam, along with a number of different exploits besides. We can be reasonably sure that the distribution of such bulk emails will continue for the immediate future.

Variants of one of the most dangerous rootkits currently in circulation, Trojan.Win32.TDSS, were also actively distributed via email in June, two of them taking fourth and seventh place in the Top 10. Variants of this program could be found in different links, although always in the form of an attachment packed in a zipped archive. In order to distribute them, fraudsters used one of their favorite themes – taxes.

This summer’s main event, the FIFA World Cup, certainly didn’t go unnoticed by the spammers. This theme was heavily exploited in a number of ways in the Medications and Health-Related Goods and Services and Computer Fraud categories.
