Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one… it is a funny thing, that need to feel “at home” somewhere or anywhere, it soothes the mind, makes us relax… and at the same time, when you’ve not been home for a while, that sudden realisation that you don’t feel at home…

I hope I’ve stumbled onto something interesting, personal and universal at the same time….

Back in 2000 I was in Australia myself for the first time, doing a bit of travelling. I planned to meet friends later in the trip but I arrived in Melbourne very late one night as my first entry point and the next day went exploring. I still remember now thinking “this feels like home, I could live here” in such that it looked and felt like a part of the UK where I’m originally from. I somehow immediately felt relaxed and comfortable in this new town I was visiting for the first time, many miles from ‘actual home’. The even stranger thing is that where I was living at the time, in Munich (whilst not on holiday) was not ‘home’ (UK).

Now my feelings have switched and after living in Munich for over 19 years I feel at home here, especially as it will soon get to the point where I’ve lived more in Munich than the UK. When I go back these days (actually next week) it’s different and although I love revisiting places from when I was younger at the same time I miss things about Munich.

A very interesting topic to read and I shall look forward to further updates down the road.

I’ll make sure to post regular updates to the concept and drawings! And of course, when the time is coming near, invite you all to the opening :-)

A *real* scale size model sure sounds tempting! Maybe I will try that one too sometime soon. Indeed, I have 3 huge movable walls to my disposal… well they’re more like “turnable walls” but they have a tremendous impact on the space indeed!

Thanks for you comment… And glad you like… Yes, it’s slowly gaining speed and coming together more and more… I’m now editing what is I think to become the Tokyo chapter of the project, and I’m going to post some sample images of those pretty soon. Just trying to make time to write the actual post!

I received my copy of ‘Yakuza’ today (what a fast delivery :-)). The book has been on my wish list since I saw some pictures on the net last year or so and I am positively stunned.
Having been in Tokyo myself recently I have to say you captured the vibe, color and tone of the city so well. When I am browsing through the book, it’s as being back there (even if I was a mere tourist and not an observer of that very special part of Japanese society).

If just for the pictures themselves the book would be among my favorites of my photo books already. My only complaint is your choice to spread most of the pictures over two pages (see also the first paragraph of Mike Johnston’s blogpost who puts it in much better words than I can: http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2011/06/book-report.html). For almost every picture I see I wish it would be on a separate horizontal page. Hey, I even would buy the book again if you would ever change the layout for a third edition :-)

Well, that being said, I also wanted to ask if you sell prints. Your print section doesn’t give any information there. My girlfriend lives in Belgium, so Hasselt is on my route regularly :-)

Bottom line though: you truly are an inspiration / role model for aspiring photographers out there. Please keep up the amazing work & bring your talents to Chicago ;) If you ever have an exhibit at the Art Institute here (which would be AMAZING!!) I’d be sure to tell everyone I know!
