Yep, I shold probably shoot more.. though with film it's a bit different, can't check if I've 'got it'.. what I also find interesting here, esp. in the 3rd sheet, is the postporcessing, nice to see the pics 'transformed', thanks!

hey eva!

yes I can get stubborn around a scene, especially if I can't get it right the first time :-)

But it is important that you stick with the scene until you get the image you see happening... sometimes you get it fairly quickly, but usually it goes like contact sheet #2...

Hey Daniel,

Funny that you should mention that, I am right in the middle of preparing my dossier at kickstarter :-)

It is a great way to gain funding for a project.... I'm working out the deatils (levels of rewards and such) and a good description of the project as we speak... But I'm also talking directly to possible investors (a lot going on behind the scenes), talks that I need to finish before I can actually "start" kickstarter.

Expect to see a project ready for funding by the end of summer! Really glad you are interested in the idea already...

Cheers,

Agree with you about living pure and still making a reasonable living from photography. Have you thought about going down the route of Kickstarter to raise the funds for this project?

http://www.kickstarter.com/

I for one would be happy to contribute, having followed your progress from the start.

Hey David,

You nailed it... editing and sequencing is exactly the thing that takes <b>the longest and is by far the hardest work</b> once the images are made and the master edit is done.

and the mutual effects of sequence, layout, edit, on each other, is the hardest balance to find

It's what I mentioned in an earlier post (or was it a newsletter issue?), that editing and sequencing <i>per "product"</i> (slideshow, book, magazine, article, video,....) in a story, should be very different as each medium has it unique feel and one should adjust everything accordingly.

Basically, <i>telling the story is more important that anything else</i>, and everything i do in the project serves that purpose.

Meaning that i basically start all over when i do something new in my project :-)

---

Having Lulu print consistently is a lot of careful post processing, knowing what your images will "do" in print, and going through at least 2 test prints, even if you like first result.... then you should be fine

Glad you like it....

cheers,
a

my copy arrived yesterday. the pictures look great, but i think it's the sequencing and layout that really shine.

btw, how did you ensure that Lulu would print consistently...im always wary of these print-on-demand outfits, though they are all getting better.

Hey Jonathan,

yeah i get it... In my case, the good thing is that the family controls the area... so also the bouncers. But still I always remain vigilant, things happen very quickly if you don't pay attention

hope you ate some cake while waiting! (menu on the wall!!)
i spent many nights around that same area as the last image, but would never hang around too long as i didn't want to get my gear smashed by the gaijin bouncers.
i can now more clearly visualize where you are which makes these images ever more impacting.
cheers.

Don't worry about it. Something strange happened elsewhere too and I blame Chrome. Also tried to upload several single images at Burn and nothing registered, apparently. Grrr.

Anyway, I just ordered 893 Magazine.

Anton,

I've been following your blog and the Yakuza project for a while now, and am impressed by the results. Placed my order, and can't wait to see it for real. Are you planning on publishing high quality prints of the photography for this project?

Great!
I have ordered one. Now the difficult time of waiting has started.
Enjoy your time in Japan, and good luck for the further activities leading to your book.

Cheers,

i just love the sheer simplicity of your accompanying text.
it says all there is to say, in a very airy way, without pretension.
is what you are writing here going to be in the book, more or less?

hey Bjarte,

yes there are more meeting rooms... i have no clue how many but i think i saw at least six :-D

glad you like the Koi picture... I feel that they really do have a great symbolic meaning in Japan, and i can sit and watch and instantly become "zen"... I think the japanese understood that one well.

the door is not actually the first picture in the book, but is the first picture in a chapter! so you've seen that one coming :-)

the first picture in the book is the one where my brother is handing a ceremonial envelope with the agreement to photograph.... I think I've sent it in one of my newsletters... wait let's look... ah yes here it is:
"<a href="http://us1.campaign-archive.com/?u=5e7f5a3d22f50680ead2abb78&id=d5149b68bc" rel="nofollow">Hello, and welcome to my mind</a>"

The door makes me curious. For instance, why the number 6? Are there more meeting rooms? If not, what are the other rooms for? Or maybe there is only meant to be 6 people at a time in the room?

This is definitely why pictures that don't show everything is more interesting, because getting curious about something and making individual theories is simply more fun.

The fish picture works well with the first, gives me a feeling of being trapped, sort of how you might have felt while waiting outside room #6, between the past and the future...

*thumbs up*

Btw, I think the door picture could work as the first picture in your book. (Maybe not the front cover though.)

I actually did mean patience on both our parts (readers and author). I it puts our discovery at a pace that better represents your own.

hey david,

thanks for the words... and yeah patience is the thing here...

two years ago, the initial negotiations to start the project lasted ten months, and now i am photographing for over a year....

Nice little anecdote: a month ago, after 14 months of shooting, Soichiro (my contact) remarked (at the funeral of Miyamoto-san):

<i>"Looking at what happened this week, I think now your project is now ready to really <b>start</b>"</i>

Fourteen months in. Imagine. I sure am excited about things to come :-)

cheers, a

i think this is my second or third post where i've piggy-backed on someone else's comments, but why try and rephrase something when someone else has said it better ;)

patience. that's the best word to describe your project. i know that Steve Caddy was referring to "our" patience, as followers of your work, but i think it's YOUR patience that should be recognized. you have completely immersed yourself in your subject, and it shows. your pictures feel true, not rushed by a looming filing deadline.

i just wanted to let you know that your submission has paid off. this stuff is gold.

patience. that’s the best word to describe your project. i know that Steve Caddy was referring to “our” patience, as followers of your work, but i think it’s YOUR patience that should be recognized. you have completely immersed yourself in your subject, and it shows. your pictures feel true, not rushed by a looming filing deadline.

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the words... and i'm glad you say the match-up feels effortless... because I put a lot of effort into that :-)

Rather than just releasing a full slideshow with all images at once, I rather prefer this format... like a story being written "live"

Cheers,

Anton, this really is a body of work that just keeps getting better with every post. If there's a lesson in this for me it's that patience is rewarded. The wait for each post seems like nothing at all when it finally comes, and the amount of planning that must have gone into this...

Anyway: Thank you. The match-up between words and image feels effortless and perfect too by the way.

Can't wait for the book.

I understand it all too well..... these days I tend to think about post processing before I pick up a camera.I have been threatening myself that I will use a image straight out of the box ( never happens). Then again I am too flippant in how I use a camera to create a articulated linear story.
I am looking forward to your book and will probably send a version to my nephew who is a tall blonde Nordic looking man living in a outer city of Japan with few foreigners. My guess is that he would really appreciate your story and the way you went about it.

hey imants,

glad to see you here mate!

the post production to me is as important as the photograph itself... because <strong>the story</strong> that i want to tell is not only what comes out of the camera... it is the writing, the shooting, the post production, the camera, my physical presence, the preparation, my mood, my vision, and everything else imaginable

the story is the thing i want to tell.

it would be the same if i were to ask you to show me one of the original unaltered files in your mm pieces... i'm very interested to see, but i also realize that this would be completely irrelevant to what you want to say.

... wondering if i make sense actually... do i?

An air with a of almost sinister undertone, definitive full stop material but with that almost comical men's business feel about it. I guess that is to be expected as it is a male dominated way of thinking here. It would be interesting to see the images without PP work or as straight/direct bnw conversion, though I doubt if they would have the same emotional feel about them

hey david b,

yes, talk soon... as per usual, lots of idea exchanges over skype when we talk... seems like a good way always. still saving $$ and time, to get to norway

as long as we keep on working hard and deliver good stuff, we will hopefully "get there"... whatever that means

guess it's more of a feeling than something tangible

cheers..

I said it the first time I saw a picture of this project in Burn "Anton, absolutely amazing. This essay is the one that I´ve always dreamed of doing…". Not much more I can say a year later....
Love the topic, the images, the post-pro,....can't wait to get my hands on that book!
Congratulations again.

hey mark,

after the first few months into the project, i started noticing patterns in the color and visual style, that i found suited the story... once i saw those, i guess it all started to evolve in that way. obviously there also custom raw processing, specifically for this project.

even though this project is very much the "picture by appointment" type, i never know what is actually going to happen, so i always set out with a completely open mind... so nothing in my mind...

the subject/situation dictates what i shoot, and in a later stage my vision dictates how/what i edit

obviously my vision will "seep into" the times that i am shooting, but i try to steer clear of consciously "only shooting what fits my vision" because i fear that would limit my growth and experience as a photographer... there is so much to learn

so yes... i think i try to make my mind empty as much as possible so i can react as purely as possible to the subject...

hope that answers your question, 't was a hard one :-)

cheers,
anton

Anton,

A very compelling series and one I can't wait to see in a completed form.

Was curious about the visual style you have brought to this piece- a dark, moody, vignetted, and desaturated recipe (seems there is no blue in Japanese outdoors ) that
just seems to nail it.
Did you actively set out with a visual style in mind or did it just evolve ?

I look at another series of yours, " Sugar", which is one that has stayed with me since you released it and note that the color palette is quite saturated and
the compositions/subject benefit from an appropriate splash of color.

Again, are you actively setting out with something in mind or are you reacting to a subject and letting that 'dictate' the visual language you adopt
for a given project.

Best,
Mark

Paul,

yes i am aware that the gutter has an influence on the center part of the image: i edit accordingly... so i make my edit specifically knowing that my images will lose detail in the centre, and might get minimally cut off at the edges.

I hold Luc Delahaye's book "Winterreise" as an example, there you also have to "open" the book very far sometimes and "bend the binding" and such, but i like the feel and the "character" of a worn out book a lot more than a book that tries to "stay new" (you know what i mean). so i guess i'll try to find a way to ecourage people to not be afraid and wear out the book :-)))

i'll still be looking for good binding nonetheless of course... japan of course has a wealth of expertise in paper & binding, i'll first go look there i think

cheers,

yes i am aware that the gutter has an influence on the center part of the image: i edit accordingly… so i make my edit specifically knowing that my images will lose detail in the centre, and might get minimally cut off at the edges.

I hold Luc Delahaye’s book “Winterreise” as an example, there you also have to “open” the book very far sometimes and “bend the binding” and such, but i like the feel and the “character” of a worn out book a lot more than a book that tries to “stay new” (you know what i mean). so i guess i’ll try to find a way to ecourage people to not be afraid and wear out the book :-)))

i’ll still be looking for good binding nonetheless of course… japan of course has a wealth of expertise in paper & binding, i’ll first go look there i think

cheers,

hey mike!

thanks for your reply.... i don't know if i am influenced by japanese photographers... simply because i have not seen or studied very many. but on several occasions i have been told that i have a japanese "eye" (whatever that means) by japanese and non-japanese people... so in some way, the culture must be rubbing off into my vision as a whole... and i hope that will be a good thing in the long run :-)

cheers
a

ps i use digital only at this point (used to use an old contaxt + tri-X + agfa developer and ilford papers)

anton, appreciate you allowing this amazing 'journey' to be accessible to all! loving the little sneak-peeks into the work- i think it helps add to the mystery of your subject.
the dummy looks amazing too!!

Looking rather sumptuous. How do you feel about the gutter? I'm remain unsure about the gutter warping the images. The gutter issue has held me back in the past on prepping my own book projects. Would like very much to hear your opinion on the gutter.

Some saddle stitched books work with full bleed where every spread opens like a centerfold but not many publishers bind this way, unfortunately.

Cheers,
Paul Treacy

Anton, like the dummy, looking forward to the book. I'm usually not a fan of the full bleed: I always say that respect should be shown to a photograph by giving it its own space. Full bleed photographs usually look unfinished to me; as if some of it has somehow dripped over the edge of the page somehow. Having said that, your dummy looks good to me: partly, I suspect, because the vignette gives the photographs a border and partly because I have been looking at photography from japan recently (in particular Daido Moriyama) and the photographs have tended to be full bleed.

Do you find yourself influenced by Japanese photography? Your style is quite loose, almost dream-like: are you using digi or film? O.k. I'm a gearhead.

Anton,
This absolutely looks very promising!
Love the idea of using all of the page without margins, borders, comments,…
And those matching dark and mysterious tones are so fitting the subject!
Seriously impressive work!!

jordan, david, peter, all...

i'll also thoroughly document my search for a publisher for this story... so you will all be kept in the loop.

but because i'm laying out an approach to publish in multiple channels simultaneously, it's going to be a bit harder to talk to a "traditional" book publisher.... we'll see. i hope it'll work out.

cheers and thanks for the comments,
