Gommateshwara of Shravanabelagola

Who doesn’t already know the story of ‘Gommateshwara’ (a.k.a. Bahubali) and his supreme sacrifice; he won everything from his brother and could have become an emperor, but he returned everything back and chose the life of an ascetic. Bahubali is considered an ideal man who conquers selfishness, jealousy, pride and anger. Bahubali is a major figure in Jainism.

This is a monolithic statue of Bahubali, referred to as “Gommateshvara”, built by the Ganga dynasty minister and commander Chamundaraya. It’s 60 feet (18 m) in height and is situated above a hill in Shravanabelagola, in the Hassan district of Karnataka state, India. It was built in the 10th century AD.

ISKCON Temple Gopura, Bangalore

The ISKCON temple at Bangalore is not your average Indian temple, it’s a modernized steel, glass and concrete structure. The ISKCON temple is located on top of a hillock and visible from quite a distance. This photo is taken from the top of my house.

When you look at any Temple Gopura the feeling of awe and divinity come to you automatically – I have my reservations about the ISKCON Gopura in this regard. But nevertheless, the ISKCON temple due to its strategic location presents a good photographic opportunity which I can’t let go!

Bus ride from Manali to Kaza – Himachal Pradesh

Search the directions for Manali to Kaza on Google Maps, Google shows the distance as 203 kms and also suggests the travel time as 4 hours 10 minutes – our bus ride took more than 12 hours (5 am to 5:30 pm)!

Indian tourists (honeymooners) don’t venture north of Manali, hence the bus was filled with foreign tourists (trekkers and backpackers) and locals of Kaza. The 12 hour back-breaking, stomach-churning journey on the mountainous roads would have been even more painful if not for the excellent sights on offer.

More details on our journey from Shimla to Kaza. This is a photographic account of my travel through Shimla to Manali to Kaza in Himachal Pradesh in preparation for our 4 day Spiti to Kinnaur trek.

Indian Spotted Eagle

This Eagle is regularly found perched on the tree top next to our terrace in Bangalore. We are fortunate enough to have some green space next to our house which attracts a variety of Birds of all sizes and shapes.

Supertrees of Gardens by the Bay

Supertrees are tree-like structures that dominate the ‘Gardens by the Bay’ landscape of Singapore. With heights that range between 25 metres (82 ft) and 50 metres (160 ft) they serve as vertical gardens that perform a multitude of functions, which include planting, shading and working as environmental engines for the gardens.

In this Panorama Marina Bay Sands (huge three column building balancing a boat) is shown in the background. We can also view the elevated walkway running between two of the larger Supertrees.

Himalayas from Bhabha pass, Himachal Pradesh

Panorama view of the Himalayas during the descent from Bhabha pass on the second day of our Spiti-Kinnaur trek in Himachal Pradesh.

This was the longest and toughest day of the trek. Starting from the first days camp @4050m we crossed the Bhabha Pass @4900m and from there we climbed down to an elevation of around 4100m to reach the evenings camping ground near a place called Kara, covering a distance of 17-18 kms in the process. The ascent to the peak was very difficult due to a snow blizzard, the descent even more difficult and risky due to the fresh slippery snow!

Seen in the right corner of the Panorama is Gopal, my good friend, because of whom we did the Spiti Kinnaur trek.
