The Risen Christ

Original wood model sculpted by Nathan Paul Meyer; Dragon Spade Studio.

Wooden 'Jesus' model, next to clay 'Joan' model.

Wooden model next to bronze casting, during metal finishing stage.

Bronze casting with mounting hardware installed and metalwork finished.

Initial installation in concrete base; Medford, Wisconsin.

This piece, "The Risen Christ", was commissioned by the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, for their Medford Evergreen Cemetery. The sculptor, Nathan Paul Meyer also designed and installed the landscaping around the statue. The stone of the base and benches is granite; the paths are laid out such, inside of a round drive to echo the "peace" glyph.

Pouring bronze at Anurag

Warming the bronze ingots on the edge of the furnace, before dropping them into the crucible.

Heaving the bronze and brightly glowing crucible from the furnace, at the height of its heating. The crucible will then be set down on a carbon barriered (cardboard) firebrick and "slagged" [have the glass and impurities raked off the top].

The full crucible is too heavy to hold and pour, repeatedly and/or steadily, just by two men hefting the yoke. It is therefore suspended by a chain hoist, initially, that can move in three axes (the third pourer being the 'chain man', controlling up and down movement and assisting with lateral motion in one axis) with the two pour men providing fine adjustment, rotation, lateral motion in second axis and pouring leverage.

The "ceramic-shell" molds are generally thinner and more "figurative".

The plaster mold are generally thicker, blockier.

Placing the emptied, cooling crucible down on a layer of carbon ash (from cardboard), serving as a release-from/barrier-to the firebrick at the base of the furnace.

Joan of Arc project

Peter Lupori sculpted the Joan of Arc piece, for joan of Arc church in Minneapolis.

The clay/foam model has rubber/plaster mold created around it. Separate wax pieces will be cast from the rubber mold.

After being cast in separate pieces, the statue is tacked back together after being "broken-out" of the plaster mold.

These characters of bronze

These pieces are supposed to be three dimensional interpretations of (Chinese?) calligraphic characters. I'll up date this posting with the name of the artist and the names of the pieces (If I can describe them, appropriately, to Baggins). The sinuous nature of the pieces must have required many individual cast parts.

This series of pics show a bronze dress being created on the original clay form, then being placed on the bronze female form. I need to call Bilbo and ask about the name of this piece and the artist's name. I will be back from deer-camp by the end of the weeek and will get the story and update this posting.

"As a boy growing up in Massachusetts, Sam Durant formed a lasting connection to the Midwest when he wrote a grade-school research paper on the American Indian Movement (founded in Minneapolis) and the 1973 conflict between Oglala Sioux activists and the FBI at South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation. Now a Los Angeles-based artist, he's returning to Native American themes through a new sculpture to be installed this month in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The culmination of Durant's yearlong Walker artist residency, this Walker-commissioned work includes an upside-down tree cast in bronze, presented on a reflective steel plate and animated by a soundscape created with students from Four Directions and Heart of the Earth charter schools in Minneapolis and pow-wow participants from the Little Earth housing community. The piece is titled Walker Art Center Garden Project with Audio Narrative, Ojibwe, Lakota, and Dakota Truths and Myths from the Invisible Present, Past, and Future-plus Retrocession Monument: Direction through Indirection (Bronze Version)."

Anurag cast this piece from a HUUUGE! red cedar mask in 1995; for Ed Archie Noisecat and Minneapolis Parks. We camped out in the park (in tipis) to "guard the concrete" as it set and keep the raccoons off the stainless steel posts.
