Dakota Fanning still growing up gracefully

In May we ran a story about how grown up child actress Dakota Fanning, 14, looks. Dakota is the same age as Ali Lohan, but she manages to look very pretty yet age-appropriate at the same time. At the premiere of her controversial film Hounddog last night in NY, Fanning wore black patent peep-toe wedge heels and a silver satin strapless top over black skinny jeans. She had on minimal makeup and wore her hair long with a little volume.

Fanning’s schedule is busy. She has the Secret Life of Bees coming out this year, two films in post production scheduled for release next year, and another in the works. She’s sure to get more offers for projects soon. I’m really impressed by this girl and you can see how she will mature into more adult roles. She may very well win an Oscar before she’s 20. Somehow she’s managed to preserve her childhood despite a busy Hollywood career and she’ll hopefully stay grounded throughout her teen years.

Hounddog premiered at the Sundance film festival in 2007 and includes an infamous scene in which Fanning’s young character is raped. All that is shown is her face, but the inclusion of the scene is said to have scared off investors and caused production and distribution to be delayed multiple times. It is finally out in the US in limited release this Friday, September 19.

Is Leonardo DiCaprio finally single again?

Rumors are flying yet again that Leonardo DiCaprio and Bar Refaeli have split, but that’s not really new news. In Touch is reporting the two are over and haven’t been seen together since July 14 in LA, but New York magazine reports they have been seen together and alone around New York City. These two break up and make up more often than they change their socks.

Everything Leo does is tabloid fodder, and here is a round-up of Leo stories from the weeklies. The stories range from probably exaggerated to downright unbelievable, so take these with a grain of salt the size of an iceberg.

If Bar really is Leo’s ex-arm candy, maybe it’s because he’s been partying up a storm with college girls. The September 15 print edition of In Touch says Leo was spotted at Coco de Ville in LA on August 26, “partying with the hot USC sorority girls all night,” according to an onlooker. “He poured the cocktails, was flirting with them, and even paid for the entire bill….He enjoyed every minute of the attention.”

An insider says this wasn’t Leo’s first meeting with the coeds. They first met at The Bank at Bellagio in Las Vegas on August 15.

But being a horndog doesn’t mean Leo’s not a nice guy. National Enquirer’s gossip guru Mike Walker reports in the September 15 print edition that while walking down the street in Manhattan, Leo helped an inexperienced and lost cabbie. The taxi driver had pulled over to ask directions, but the man he asked was giving him bogus information. A witness says Leo overheard the conversation and told the prankster, “You’re giving this guy wrong directions!” and gave the grateful cabbie the correct info.

Leo also helped a woman who couldn’t afford gas for her SUV. While famously eco-friendly Leo was driving his hybrid with (apparently on at the time) girlfriend Bar Refaeli, he pulled into a gas station.

[Leo] noticed a woman with five kids in her SUV getting teary-eyed as she filled her tank and watched the meter climb past $100. ‘Oh my God, look at this, I can’t afford these gas prices anymore,’” she wailed.

Instead of lecturing the woman on driving a gas-guzzler, Leo told the gas station attendant to put the woman’s gas bill on his credit card. When the woman found out that he had paid for her, she chased after him to thank him, but didn’t recognize him. She said, “You know, you look so familiar to me, but I just can’t place your face.” Leo’s response? “Have a nice day.”

The Dark Knight Tops $500 Million at Box Office

The Dark Knight– which was the fastest flick to earn $400 million – has become the second movie in history to gross over $500 million at the box office the Associated Press reported on Sunday.

The Batman sequel has raked in over $502.4 million in just over six weeks - half the time it took Titanic, which reached the half-billion mark in a little more than three months the AP reported.

The Dark Knight ranks second behind Titanic's $601 million gross.

Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros., said he expects The Dark Knight to finish at about $530 million, though it could reach $550 million.

"I keep raising the number because it just keeps holding better than expected," Fellman told the Associated Press.

Britney Spears 'Excited' to Kick Off Video Awards

Britney Spears will open the show at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, PEOPLE has learned.

"MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs?" Spears tells PEOPLE in a statement. "I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated."

Spears – who has been nominated 16 times and never won a Moon Man – is up for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year for "Piece of Me."

It's still not known how she'll open the show. A source confirms that the opening segment will not feature a musical performance by Spears.

In what can only be described as another brilliant move on Papa Simpson’s part, Jessica Simpson Jessica Simpson is hawking poor-man’s beer Stampede Light Plus. NY Daily News says,

Simpson, 28, will serve as the beer’s spokeswoman and appear in advertisements.

And she’s putting her money where her mouth is - Simpson also owns a 15 percent share in the company.

“Jessica found out about Stampede after trying it in Dallas and lik[ed] it so much that she met with the founder and became an owner,” her rep explained to the Daily News on Wednesday.

The singer, who is releasing her debut country album in September, liked the beer because it was “consistent with her healthy lifestyle and values,” her publicist said. “She likes to invest in healthy products.”

According to its label, Stampede Light Plus beer is chock full of B-vitamins and has only 115 calories per beverage.

So this is like the freaking jackpot! Now I can wash down my Froot Loops (a good source of vitamins!) and no trans-fat Cheetos with a beer that’s good for me! Coupled with splashing my feet in the kiddie pool, I’m on my way to a god-like physique! Michael Phelps who?

Michael Phelps girlfriend mystery solved - it’s a fellow Olympian for now

Earlier in the week there was a lot of speculation about record-setting Olympian swimmer Michael Phelps’ love life. The buff athlete graces the cover of Sports Illustrated and stands to earn millions in endorsement deals. He’s one of the hottest commodities around, but fellow American Olympic swimmer and Playboy model Amanda Beard denied hooking up with him, saying “Ewww, that’s nasty” when she was asked about it. British model Lily Donaldson hasn’t commented on a rumored romance with Phelps, but there’s at least one lovely Olympian who didn’t pass up a chance with the 6′4″ powerhouse.

I know these two are young and this may not last for them, but could you imagine what great athletes their kids would be? Rice has a couple of world records under her belt too.

Once the Olympics come to an end on Sunday Phelps will have a great new place to relax and entertain the women that are sure to flock to him. He’s purchased a $1.69 million dollar condo on the river in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. He can surely afford a much bigger mansion, though. US Weekly reports that his lifetime earnings are estimated to come in around $100 million and that he already has endorsement deals with PowerBar, Omega, AT&T Wireless, Visa, Speedo, and Kelloggs.

Christina Applegate Talks About Her Double Mastectomy

In an interview that aired today, Christina Applegate talked openly to Good Morning America about her battle with breast cancer and how she is 100% clear of the disease. Choosing not to undergo chemotherapy of radiation, she opted for something more aggressive. Even though doctors only detected the cancer in one of her breasts, she chose to have a prophylactic double mastectomy. When she tested positive for the cancer gene, she knew what had to be done.

"My decision, after looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities for me-the only one that seemed the most logical was to have a bilateral mastectomy. I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing. I just wanted to kind of be rid of this whole thing for me. This was the choice that I made, and it was a tough one," Christina told Robin Roberts.

And her diagnosis? She proudly proclaimed herself to be free of cancer. I'm absolutely 100% clear and clean. It did not spread and they got everything. I'm definitely not gonna die of breast cancer," she said.

Not only has she been given a clean bill of health, but Christina's next mission is raising money to see that other women can get the early detection care that they desperately need. It's wonderful to see her making the best of a tough situation and also reaching out to help others. She is definitely at the top of my favorite celebrities list.

Meg Ryan calls ageism in Hollywood “sexist and horrible”

Meg Ryan stars in an upcoming remake of a popular 1939 film, The Women, which also features Annette Benning, Jada Pinkett Smith, Eva Mendes, and Debra Messing. The film is being compared to Sex and The City as it has a cast of well-to-do women in their 30s and 40s and focuses on their relationships. It’s out in the US on September 12 and I look forward to seeing it as the trailer makes it look like a lot of fun.

Ryan, 46, hasn’t had a lot of success in films in the past few years, and she told Hello! Magazine she made a decision to take a hiatus. She has a two year-old girl, Daisy True, she adopted as a baby from China along with a 15 year-old son from her marriage to Dennis Quaid. Ryan talked about growing older in Hollywood and how she hopes her new movie will help open doors for older actresses. She also discussed how many women try to have it all and how difficult that is to manage:

So where have you been, because we haven’t seen you in many movies recently?
“I just made a conscious decision to take a break. I just didn’t feel like working. It’s as simple as that.”

Are you worried about The Women being compared to the Sex and The City movie?
“Not at all. If anything, the success of that movie will help us.”

What message do you hope it will send out to women?
“We hope it will open doors - especially for the 40-plus set in Hollywood.”

Do you think women are better off now than in the Thirties, when the original film was set?
“I think 50 years from now, when we look back on this generation of women who were told that we could have it all and tried to, people are going to go ‘What the hell were they doing?’ It’s so hard, and I think that you have to figrue out some way of keeping all of those capabilities and requirements in your life in balance.

“It’s very hard to be a career person and have a relationship. I didn’t succeed at doing it all. It’s incredibly hard.”

How are you coping with life in your 40s?
“I’m very happy. Turning 40 in Hollywood was definitely something for me but it doesn’t feel like an ending. My interests have expanded and I have never felt more creative than I do right now…”

A critic once said that you would struggle to have a movie career beyond 45. You’re 46 now, so what do you say to that?
“That’s a really old-fashioned idea. It’s so low for someone to have said that. They don’t say that about men, so it’s sexist and horribe.”

So you’ve never been tempted to walk away from movies?
“I may one day, but it won’t be because someone told me to. I alsot think that the demographics of who sees movies have changed.

“Women over 31 want movies that are about them, so there are a lot of big surprises left. The baby-boom generation is getting older and it wants something more satisfying than why the movie-makers expect.”

Jessica and her hubby Cash Warren went to see the new Mike Myers movie The Love Guru. She tells how Justin Timberlake was so funny and affected her labor to INO:

“I felt something go. I had been very careful of my movements and seating, but it was impossible to sit still when he (Timberlake) was on screen. I wouldn’t go as far as saying my water broke, but it did feel as if I was actually splitting my sides. I felt completely drained afterwards.”

I guess maybe I should see the movie after all. Usually Timberlake flicks bomb…oh wait, it did. Nevermind.

Lindsay Lohan drinking again!

Leaving all doubts aside, Lindsay Lohan is drinking again! There have been numerous sightings before, but reliable People magazine has spotted her falling off the wagon this time. The wild child was in rehab THREE separate times in 2007.

This time Lohan was partying down in NYC on Saturday night until at least 4:15 a.m. Sunday morning. She arrived with good friend Samantha Ronson, at Times Square’s Hawaiian Tropic Zone as Ronson spun tunes from midnight to 4 a.m. Sunday. Last weekend, Lohan accompanied Ronson to gigs at three different clubs in Los Angeles but was not seen drinking.

So while Lindsay now talks a good game about new priorities and straightening her life out, her actions speak louder. Seems like Lindsay hasn’t learned anything from her multiple DUI, time in rehab, volunteer work, etc. It’s too bad Lindsay ignored her dad’s plea to do missionary work in India with him very recently, because I fear the next time we see Lindsay volunteering her time it will be part of her next parole agreement.
