Another year another Holiday card. Still focusing on winter themes more than the typical Christmas imagery. Used the same mediums as last year too. I've scanned my illustration at different steps in the process to see how I could fine tune my technique.

Une autre année qui tire à sa fin. Je me suis donc attelée à peindre ma carte annuelle. Je me concentre plutôt sur le thème de l'hiver plutôt que sur les images typiques de Noël. J'ai utilisé les mêmes médiums que celle de l'année dernière. J'ai numérisé l'illustration à différentes étapes du procédé pour voir un peu comment je pouvais améliorer ma technique.

Wow, I've neglected my blog for nearly two months now. I've been quite busy with work, a trip to Las Vegas and a new project. My coworker and I have started a gaming blog on one of the website we manage: CHOM's Girls on Game. We do reviews, tease new games and even interview people in the industry. I admit, the gaming blog took me away from this one but I will be posting again soon. I'm working on a new illustration and I plan on scanning each step of the process. But first, my eyes need to fully heal. From what you say? From my life-changing laser eye surgery! Today, I woke up and I could see. I took a shower and I could see. I bought my first pair of sunglasses in 20 years. It's amazing how yesterday, I couldn't see anything without my glasses on and today, I can't see anything with my glasses on. No glasses! Sans lunettes!

Wow, j'ai laissé tombé ce blogue aux oubliettes. J'ai été très occupée avec ma job, un voyage à Las Vegas et un nouveau projet. Ma collègue et moi avons lancé un nouveau blogue sur un des sites que nous administrons: CHOM's Girls on Games. Nous faisons des critiques de jeux vidéos, annonçons les nouveautés et faisons même des entrevues avec des gens du milieu. Le blogue est en anglais seulement étant donné que c'est pour une station de radio anglophone. J'admets que mon attention a été redirigée vers le nouveau blogue aux dépens de celui-ci mais je prépare de nouveaux billets dont un pour une nouvelle illustration. Je vais même numériser chaque étape du processus. Mais d'abord et avant tout, mes yeux doivent effectuer une guérison complète. Pourquoi une guérison? Parce que j'ai finalement eu une chirurgie au laser pour corriger ma vue! C'est fou comment hier, ma vue était complètement embrouillée sans mes lunettes et, qu'aujourd'hui, elle est complètement embrouillée quand je les porte! Bref, jetez un coup d'oeil au nouveau blogue si les jeux vidéos vous intéressent et revenez bientôt pour de nouvelles illustrations!

I'm back from my trip to Paris. It was quite the artistic pilgrimage. We went to the Louvre twice, to Orsay thrice and once to Orangerie and Eugène-Delacroix. Being a junkie for all things medieval, we also went to Cluny and visited Notre-Dame on four occasions: for the Cathedral itself, for the movie they project in the nave at night, for the archeological crypt and to climb the towers (I did that one by myself as my mom is not great with stairs). We bought a four day museum pass and milked it. We paid 50€ each for our pass and would've paid roughly 80€ each if we had bough each ticket individually. Below are some pictures. The rest are on my Google+ account so add me if you want to see them all.

Je suis de retour après mon pèlerinage artistique à Paris. Nous avons visité le Louvre à deux reprises, Orsay à trois reprises ainsi que le Musée de l'Orangerie et le Musée National d'Eugène-Delacroix. Adorant les trucs de l'époque médiévale, nous avons aussi visité le Musée National Médiéval et Thermes de Cluny et la Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris à quatre reprises: une fois pour la Cathédrale elle-même, une fois pour la crypte archéologique, une autre pour le film projeté le soir dans la nef et finalement, pour visiter les tours (j'y suis allée seule car ma mère n'aime pas trop les escaliers). Nous avons acheté la Museum Pass de 4 jours au prix de 50€ chaque. Ça a valu la peine car nous aurions déboursé au moins 80€ chacune en billets individuels. Voici quelques photos que j'ai prises pendant notre séjour. Elles sont toutes sur mon compte Google+ ; vous pouvez m'ajouter à vos cercles pour accéder à l'album.

No multilingual support? Vraiment!

I've been shopping around for affordable integrated hosting/cms solutions for myself but also for future clients who would love to do their own webmastering. At work, we use Basestation which is a great solution for media companies (like the radio stations I work for) and would love to find something similar for smaller sites. Virb and Expression Engine are the first two contenders but were eliminated within a minute. I went to their support/FAQ/Wiki sections and typed "multilingual" in the search bar. Virb Support told this user to build one site per language and link between the two. Expression Engine support has this long-winded explanation of how to integrate PHP language arrays. The point of opting for these services is to avoid dealing with purchasing hosting and domains as well as the nightmares a simple Wordpress update can do to a custom site (like lost of plug-in support, specifically the one I use for multilingual support). As much as I love these guys and their product, I'm pretty sure Emmis Interactive has yet to face to conundrum of a client asking for multilingual solutions. (Hint: building a site twice is NOT a solution). Why is this so? Is it because they are American companies? Are there European or even Canadian companies that offer this kind of service and can accommodate a bilingual site? I have yet to find one.

And a word of advice to all you Virbs out there that might try to tackle this problem, don't offer automatic translations, just the option of adding the content in another language within the same page. I can tell you as a Canadian who's been bilingual for most of her life, there is nothing more insulting than reading content that is obviously the product of Google Translate. Be professional and hire a translator, I can recommend a few. Trust me, there will be a return on investment.

Je recherche présentement pour un service intégré hébergement/CMS pour moi-même mais aussi pour de futurs clients qui voudraient entretenir leur site eux-mêmes. Au travail, j'utilise Basestation qui est super pour les sites médias (comme les stations de radio pour lesquelles je travaille) et j'aimerais bien retrouver ce genre de solutions mais à plus petite échelle. Virb et Expression Engine étaient premiers sur ma liste mais ils ont été éliminés en moins d'une minute. Comment? (En passant, construire un site en double N'EST PAS une solution viable). Pourquoi est-ce ainsi? Est-ce que c'est parce que ce sont des compagnies Américaines? Y a-t-il des compagnies Européennes ou même Canadienne qui peuvent accommoder un site bilingue? Je tarde à en trouver une.

Un conseil aux compagnies style Virb qui voudraient offrir une vraie solution, n'ajoutez pas une fonction de traduction automatique, ajoutez seulement la possibilité d'intégrer le contenu en plusieurs langues sur une même page. Je peux vous assurer, qu'en tant que Canadienne bilingue, c'est très insultant d'avoir à lire quelquechose qui est évidemment le produit de Google Translate. Soyez professionnel et engagez un traducteur ou une traductrice. Je peux même vous en référez quelques uns! Faites-moi confiance, un bon traducteur vaut son pesant d'or.

I've been working as a webmaster for Astral Radio for about 8 months now. Last month, I had to design, build and monitor a cyber special event for CJAD. I did something similar for VIA Rail last Fall.

March My Words

March has been quite the busy month for me. I feel like things just started to slow down. Besides working on two separate sites (none of them my own, but it's next), I've taken part in a photo project called March My Words. A word was associated for every day of March and we had to submit photos based on that word. The project can be found at marchmywords.wordpress.com. I created a public Facebook album containing all 31 of my photos. It's a fun project, have a look.

Le mois de mars a été particulièrement occupé. Je sens que je peux finalement prendre un répit. Non seulement je travaille sur deux sites (pas le mien, mais ça s'en vient), j'ai aussi participé à un projet photo appelé March My Words. Un mot est associé à chaque jour du mois et nous devions prendre une photo selon celui-ci. Le projet complété est au marchmywords.wordpress.com. J'ai créé un album public sur Facebook ayant mes 31 photos. C'est intéressant comme projet, jetez-y un coup d'oeil.

I wrote this entry almost a year ago venting my frustrations about Internet Explorer 6 (which is often aptly renamed Internet Exploder) and its die hard users. I also linked several articles about how developers and industry giants like Google stopped supporting the obsolete browser. Well now, it's Microsoft turn to launch its own anti-IE6 campaign. Presenting: The Internet Explorer 6 Countdown - Moving the world off Internet Explorer 6! This campaign includes an interactive infographics, social media campaigns like Twitter trending and banners for your site.

That being said, it's important to keep your browser up to date, mostly for security reasons. If you hesitate doing so because it might slow down your old computer, I suggest using a lightweight browser like Chrome and/or removing all the heavy unneeded toolbars.

Il y a presqu'un an, j'ai écrit ce billet mettant au clair toutes mes frustrations reliés au navigateur Internet Explorer 6 et ses utilisateurs. J'y ai inclus des liens vers plusieurs articles détaillant comment certains développeurs et des géants de l'industrie comme Google abandonnent leur support du navigateur désuet. C'est maintenant au tour de Microsoft de lancer sa propre campagne contre IE6. Je vous présente le Décompte pour Internet Explorer 6 (en anglais seulement)! Cette campagne inclue un graphique interactif, des campagnes sur les médias sociaux et une bannière pour votre site.

Ceci étant dit, pour des raisons de sécurité, il est important d'avoir la version la plus à jour de votre navigateur. Si vous hésitez de le mettre à jour car vous craignez que cela va ralentir votre ordinateur sous-puissant, je vous suggère d'opter pour Chrome qui est plus léger et/ou de vous débarrassez d'ajouts inutiles comme toutes ces barres d'outils.

PHP

I'm currently doing an overhaul of a friend's website. He already has a powerful CMS for his photo galleries so he just wants me to build supporting pages. I decided to go with PHP because I could include a variables file that contained all the elements he may want to update in the future.
I found this well explained tutorial on building basic PHP templates. It's ridiculously easy for any HTML/CSS wrangler to include PHP elements in their design thanks to this tutorial.

Je suis en train de reconstruire le site Web d'un ami. Il utilise déjà un puissant gestionnaire de contenu pour ses photos; il voulait que je construise les autres pages. J'ai décidé d'intégrer du PHP car je peux inclure un fichier de variables contenant tous les éléments qu'il voudraient potentiellement mettre à jour.
J'ai trouvé ce tutoriel qui explique très bien comment construire un modèle Web en PHP. C'est vraiment facile pour n'importe quel adepte du HTML/CSS d'inclure des éléments en PHP à leur design grâce à ce tutoriel.

Went to the Botanical Garden's Butterfly Go Free exhibit with a friend. They basically let a bunch of exotic butterflies loose in one of the green houses. More pictures after the jump. Click the link below.

My freeware arsenal

In this age of the freeware, you can find a free app for almost anything. I've had my Mac for 3 years now and I've build quite the arsenal of freeware I couldn't live without. Most of them do have a Windows equivalent so, if you are a PC user, feel free to check them out.

Adium (Mac)

"Adium is a free instant messaging application for Mac OS X that can connect to AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo, and more."

After I expressed how frustrated I was with MSN's unstable and unreliable Mac client, a friend recommended I try Trillian or Adium. I went with Adium and I love it. It's fully customizable; you can find user created dock, menu bar, status and service icons as well as chat window and contact list themes. It uses Growl, a powerful notification app for Mac.

I use it for Windows Live (MSN), Google Talk, Facebook Chat and Twitter. Sadly, it has no video chat support. It's not something I really miss since I don't have a webcam. I figured I'd get Skype if needed. Trillian on the other hand, supports Skype. It's Facebook and Twitter plugins are also way more powerful. Adium only supports Facebook Chat and the main timeline for Twitter. That also hasn't bothered me because I prefer using their web interfaces. I do find Adium convenient for a quick Twitter update.

I don't really like its e-mail notifier either. Trillian seems to offer a more powerful one which supports most accounts as well as POP3 addresses. Again, this isn't a big issue for me since I use something else for my e-mails.

Pros: Light, stable and easy to use. Fully customizable. Growl Support.

Cons: No voice or video chat support. Only the main timeline for Twitter. No News Feed Support for Facebook. Unpractical e-mail notifier. Mac only (PC users can turn to Trillian).

Google Notifier (Mac + PC)

"The Google Notifier is an application that shows you alerts in your menu bar, so you can see when you have new Gmail messages or upcoming Google Calendar events without having to open a web browser."

I am a huge Gmail fan and user. I do not use e-mail software like Outlook, Mail or Thunderbird for my personal addresses. Everything is redirected to my Gmail account and I control it all from there. Again, I prefer using the web interface although I don't want to keep a browser window opened at all times nor do I want to periodically log in to check my mail. This little widget displays the number of unread messages and of upcoming calendar events. Click either icon to access shortcuts to your inbox or your calendar as well a snippet of your unread mail and upcoming events. Upon receiving a new e-mail or a scheduled calendar alarm, a subtle notifier will simply appear in the corner of your screen.

I love keeping all my contacts, events and mail in one accessible place. This is why I love this widget for my home computer. On the go, I rely on my phone: I've installed the Gmail app (I don't use the provided mail client) and I use Google Sync for my contacts and calendar.

Sketchbook Express (Mac + touchscreen mobile)

"Autodesk SketchBook^® Express for Mac is a fun and intuitive drawing application."

I found this jewel on the new Mac App store. If you have a tablet, it is a must have. It's designed specifically to be used with tablets (I use a Wacom Cintiq 12x). All the controls and tools are accessible and usable with your stylus. They've also reduced the need for keyboard shortcuts! Mind you, it's not a very powerful imaging app like Photoshop. It does what it was designed for: quick and effortless sketching. Unfortunately, once you close the file, they merge the layers. You are greeted by a popup that informs that, in order to unlock the layers, you must purchase the Pro version. Fear not, you'll have access to your layers in Photoshop.

The image file format support is extremely minimal but amongst them are TIFF and PSD. Which means you can easily open your sketches in another imaging software to polish them off. The tools are also very basic. The choices of brushes, there are only 6 layers and the color palette tool leaves much to be desired. I find that the brushes aren't as precise as they could be. I don't know if those issues are resolved with the purchased version but I am content with using this light free version.

Pros: Light, easy to use, optimized and designed for tablets, mobile version for Android and iPhone, PSD support.

Cons: Limited tools, very few file formats, imprecise and limited brushes, impractical without a tablet, layers locked after you close the file (but not in other software like Photoshop).

Cyberduck (Mac + PC)

"Open Source FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, Cloud Files, Google Docs & Amazon S3 browser for Mac and Windows"

I don't really like Filezilla; I find its interface too cluttered. I'm not a heavy FTP user either so all I really need is a simple client to manage my website and access client FTPs. Cyberduck has a one window interface which I really like. I can just drag and drop to and from a find window or set my FTP account to sync with a folder on my drive. It supports native system technologies like Keychain, Archive and Quick Look.

Pros: Lightweight, easy to use, folder sync, supports native system technologies, bookmarks, folder sync, Growl support.

Cons: Interface might be too basic.

VLC Player (Mac + PC)

"VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player andframework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols."

Last but not least, the ever so versatile VLC Player. No more downloading codecs and plug-ins for Quicktime. This app will read it all straight out of the box. It can also be a powerful tool for you media gurus out there.

Pros: Reads most codec out of the box, Growl support, light and easy to use

Cons: can't customize interface, can't use it to rip media (if you need to convert your hard copies to digital for personal use).

I had a nasty cold last week-end so I mostly doodled, watched episodes of Conan and played video games. I finished Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. I love that franchise; it's got good gameplay and storylines. I was going to test out the multiplayer since everyone tells me it's 36 flavours of awesome but I got sucked into Zelda Twilight Princess. A friend of mine lent me his Wii and I haven't had the chance to play that game yet. I haven't played that good of a Zelda game since Ocarina of Time! I feel like a kid again. That would explain that craving for Froot Loops...

Speaking of childhood memories, look who popped up in my sketchbook! That show must've brainwashed me back then because I just have the urge to draw Sailor Moon every once in a while... It's not perfect but it's fun. Drawing only in ballpoint means you have to live with the mistakes.

J'étais enrhumée la fin de semaine passée donc j'ai surtout dessiné, écouté des épisodes de Conan et joué à des jeux vidéos. J'ai fini Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Cette émission a dû me laver le cerveau quand j'étais plus jeune car j'ai des envies soudaines de dessiner des trucs de Sailor Moon de temps à autre... Le dessin est loin d'être parfait mais je l'ai dessiner au stylo à bille donc je dois accepter les erreurs.

Celebrated my birthday a week ago. Thanks to a few monetary gifts, I got me a wicked HD monitor! I still had a square 17 inch monitor... My new widescreen is 36 flavours of awesome and wasn't all that expensive.

C'était ma fête il y a une semaine. J'ai eu un peu d'argent en cadeau, j'ai donc décidé de me procurer un écran HD DEL. Comme le démontre les photos ci-dessus, j'avais encore un viel écran carré de 17 pouces. Le nouveau est tout simplement génial et le prix est abordable.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone overate and overslept as much as I did. I also gamed: levelled my World of Warcraft priest and logged some hours on Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (Christmas gift, yay).

And here are some sketches I did over the Holidays. I ordered a brown paper Cachet sketchbook and I love it. Works great with inks!

Bonne Année! J'espère que tout le monde a autant mangé et dormi que moi pendant les vacances des Fêtes. J'en ai profité pour jouer un peu : j'ai monté mon prêtre de World of Warcraft et j'ai déjà quelques heures à mon actif dans Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (cadeau de Noël, yesssssss).

Voici des esquisses que j'ai réalisées pendant les Fêtes. J'ai commandé un cahier d'esquisses fait de papier recyclé brun par Cachet et je l'adore. Parfait pour travailler avec l'encre!

It has begun!

I took down my site because I've started it's migration to Wordpress. I thought it would be pointless to leave an out of date site and portfolio while my attention is on rebuilding its new version. I left up a page with all my contact info as well as links to my various accounts. Of course, this blog will still be active and all my portfolio pieces, new and old, will be temporarily hosted on society6. It will most likely be online after the Holidays since I'm spending most of them out of town.

And here's a WIP of an illustration I'm working on right now.

Mon site est hors ligne car j'ai commencé à le migrer vers Wordpress. Je trouvais inutile de laisser en ligne un site et portfolio qui ne sont plus à jour alors que je suis concentrée à sa reconstruction. J'ai affiché une page avec des liens vers tous mes comptes ainsi que mon adresse courriel. Naturellement, je vais continuer à publier sur ce blogue et toutes mes pièces de portfolio, nouvelles et anciennes, seront disponibles par le biais de mon compte society6.
