Tanto a sua carreira quanto o seu estado psicológico seguem em ascendência. Desde o início tímido quando abria shows em lugares pequenos no começo dos anos 90 - passando por problemas com alcoolismo e insegurança que quase a fizeram desistir de tocar ao vivo - até os dias atuais em que é considerada um ícone da música alternativa e uma mulher madura.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Comentários:&lt;/strong&gt; Apesar dessa ascendência, particularmente admiro muito mais os discos da Chan na fase de menina tímida/insegura/alcoólatra. Foi quando escreveu essa obra-prima chamada Nude as the News - inspirada por um aborto que sofrera com 20 anos - que me faz lembrar o jeito emotivo e revoltado de Patti Smith cantar no início de carreira. Essa música também tem &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBJvCcVBxMw"&gt;um dos meus clips favoritos&lt;/a&gt;. Smith&lt;/em&gt; sempre foi um crítico fervorozo da Grã Bretanha, e &lt;em&gt;The Classical&lt;/em&gt; é o cúmulo do cinismo. A música soa como um hino, um triunfo, enquanto Smith canta - de forma escrachada - frases como: "&lt;em&gt;This is the home of the vain!&lt;/em&gt;" / "&lt;em&gt;Where are the obligatory niggers?&lt;/em&gt;" / "&lt;em&gt;I've never felt better in my life!&lt;/em&gt;". Prolíficos, gravaram 11 discos de estúdio e várias outras compilações/trilhas sonoras entre 1986-2006 -- provavelmente mais virão nos próximos anos. São a personificação perfeita do &lt;em&gt;Indie Rock&lt;/em&gt;, gênero extremamente desgastado nos últimos 10 anos. Não se enganem com o nome em espanhol, são americaníssimos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Comentários:&lt;/strong&gt; Um carro em alta velocidade, noite, vidros abertos, a música é instrumental, guitarras distorcidas berrando acompanhadas pelo coral de um casal bêbado sendo abafado pelo barulho e pelo vento. Talvez esse devaneio faça sentido ouvindo o som e lendo a letra. Em 1980 lançaram o primeiro disco, auto-intitulado &lt;em&gt;The Raincoats&lt;/em&gt;, e chamaram muita atenção pelo som único que faziam, um post-punk trabalhado e com a adição de violino, influenciadas diretamente pelo &lt;em&gt;The Velvet Underground&lt;/em&gt;, a carreira solo de &lt;em&gt;Nico&lt;/em&gt; e &lt;em&gt;The Kinks&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Comentário:&lt;/strong&gt; O que sempre me impressiona em &lt;em&gt;The Void&lt;/em&gt; é o fato de todos os instrumentos terem vida própria, com presenças igualmente marcantes. Razão: o disco &lt;em&gt;Endtroducing&lt;/em&gt;, lançado no mesmo ano, considerado o primeiro a ser feito totalmente com &lt;strong&gt;samplers&lt;/strong&gt;, ou seja, partes retiradas de outras músicas de artistas variados. &lt;em&gt;Shadow&lt;/em&gt; é aficcionado por LPs antigos/obscuros/raros que ficam esquecidos em sebos, e são deles que saem a grande maioria dos samplers e inspiração.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Comentário:&lt;/strong&gt; Algumas músicas funcionam melhor em determinadas situações específicas. Fazem parte do movimento &lt;em&gt;New Weird America&lt;/em&gt; - composto por bandas de folk psicodélico, experimentalismo e improvisações - que ganhou força nessa década e é influenciado especialmente pelo folk americano do fim dos anos 60/início de 70 (&lt;em&gt;Old Weird America&lt;/em&gt;).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Comentário:&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;em&gt;Lumen&lt;/em&gt; é uma música que se encaixaria perfeitamente no &lt;em&gt;In Rainbows&lt;/em&gt; do &lt;em&gt;Radiohead&lt;/em&gt;, tanto pela atenção aos pequenos detalhes quanto pela beleza em geral, sem fazer feio pra nenhuma outra do disco. &lt;em&gt;Seth Olinsky&lt;/em&gt;, vocalista do &lt;em&gt;Akron/Family&lt;/em&gt;, soa algumas vezes como &lt;em&gt;Thom Yorke&lt;/em&gt; e até &lt;em&gt;Jeff Buckley&lt;/em&gt;, principalmente nos 2 minutos finais. Sem dúvidas uma das músicas que mais ouvi esse ano.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Homenagem:&lt;/strong&gt; Dedico esse post ao grande amigo &lt;em&gt;Henrique&lt;/em&gt;, que ontem deu um trato geral no blog e o deixou com cara nova, além de resolver os problemas de incompatibilidade com browsers diversos (Firefox, Chrome, Safari). Mas os grandes responsáveis e idealizadores são dois: &lt;em&gt;Joey Burns&lt;/em&gt; (vocal/guitarra) e &lt;em&gt;John Convertino&lt;/em&gt; (bateria). Se conheceram no início da década de 90 com duas escolas/influências musicais diferentes. &lt;em&gt;Burns&lt;/em&gt; estudou música clássica e &lt;em&gt;Convertino&lt;/em&gt; era envolvido com um projeto experimental. Em 94 se mudaram e criaram raíz no Arizona, onde nasceu essa banda incrívelmente eclética e de difícil classificação.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Comentário:&lt;/strong&gt; A primeira coisa que me vem à cabeça ouvindo &lt;em&gt;Black Heart&lt;/em&gt; é de um filme &lt;strong&gt;western noir&lt;/strong&gt;. O curioso é que nunca vi, ou simplesmente não me recordo de ter visto um filme genuínamente &lt;em&gt;western noir&lt;/em&gt;. E isso é absurdo porque na minha imaginação é um contexto perfeito, algo como &lt;em&gt;Os Imperdoáveis&lt;/em&gt; com o clima noir de &lt;em&gt;O Homem Que Não Estava Lá&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Clint Eastwood&lt;/em&gt; encontra os &lt;em&gt;Irmãos Coen&lt;/em&gt;. Alguém me recomenda algo parecido com isso, por favor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Curiosidade:&lt;/strong&gt; Em setembro desse ano (2008) tive o prazer de assisti-los ao vivo com mais umas 20 pessoas em uma loja de discos com espaço de 10 metros quadrados, chamada &lt;em&gt;Other Music&lt;/em&gt;, em Nova York. Comemos churrasco feito pelos caras, trocamos idéia e ainda peguei CD autografado com dedicatória. Gravaram 10 discos nos anos 80 - de 81 até 89 precisamente - e todos são considerados pérolas pop esquecidas no tempo, sendo &lt;em&gt;Forever Breathes the Lonely Word&lt;/em&gt; a principal. &lt;em&gt;Stuart Murdoch&lt;/em&gt;, líder do &lt;em&gt;Belle &amp;amp; Sebastian&lt;/em&gt;, é admirador confesso da banda.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Comentário:&lt;/strong&gt; É compreensível o fato da banda não ser reconhecida como deveria. Apesar da levada pop, o &lt;em&gt;Felt&lt;/em&gt; era totalmente independente e anti-comercial em uma época que o acesso era restrito - algo parecido com a história do &lt;em&gt;XTC&lt;/em&gt;. Então essa banda foi a criadora do post-rock? Não exatamente. Tudo começou na década de 80 com o &lt;em&gt;Talk Talk&lt;/em&gt;. Mas isso já é outra história que veremos lá na frente.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Comentário:&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;em&gt;A Street Scene&lt;/em&gt; é genuíno &lt;em&gt;post-rock&lt;/em&gt;, com tudo de positivo que esse gênero pode oferecer: reverb, harmonia, cordas, atmosfera, e a estrutura pop que foi descaracterizada com o passar do tempo por bandas mais experimentais e menos inspiradas. A letra de &lt;em&gt;Big Shot&lt;/em&gt; fala: "&lt;em&gt;It's 3 am&lt;/em&gt; / &lt;em&gt;Don't know where I'm going&lt;/em&gt; / &lt;em&gt;Just drive somewhere&lt;/em&gt;". Seus instrumentos eram principalmente suas próprias vozes, influenciados pela música &lt;em&gt;Gospel&lt;/em&gt;, criando o gênero chamado na época de &lt;em&gt;Harmony Vocal&lt;/em&gt;, completamente dominado pelos negros. Durante a década de 40 o gênero foi aos poucos se disseminando e popularizando, outros sub-gêneros surgiram e na década de 50 atingiu seu pico. Foi o pontapé inicial para o &lt;em&gt;Rock n' Roll&lt;/em&gt; e o &lt;em&gt;R&amp;amp;B&lt;/em&gt; (&lt;em&gt;Rhythm and Blues&lt;/em&gt;).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Comentário:&lt;/strong&gt; Em 2001, quando o &lt;em&gt;Amnesiac&lt;/em&gt; do &lt;em&gt;Radiohead&lt;/em&gt; foi lançado, comprei uma revista especial - que não me recordo qual era - com várias páginas de entrevistas, informações e curiosidades sobre a banda. O que mais me chamou a atenção foi a parte em que &lt;em&gt;Thom Yorke&lt;/em&gt; falava sobre as bandas que influenciaram o &lt;em&gt;Radiohead&lt;/em&gt; na composição do &lt;em&gt;Amnesiac&lt;/em&gt;. Foi onde li pela primeira vez sobre o The Ink Spots. Então ouçam &lt;em&gt;I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire&lt;/em&gt; e depois &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvWOo_K4dQA"&gt;You and Whose Army&lt;/a&gt;,&lt;/em&gt; a similaridade é assustadora se você considerar os 50 anos que separam as duas músicas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Curiosidade:&lt;/strong&gt; Essa música foi usada na abertura do meu jogo favorito do ano, &lt;em&gt;Fallout 3&lt;/em&gt;. E todos os anos compilamos listas atrás de listas - como fiéis &lt;em&gt;music geeks&lt;/em&gt; que somos. Listas dos melhores discos do ano, melhores músicas do ano, melhores clips do ano, e, principalmente, nosso ranking anual das melhores músicas e discos de todos os tempos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Recentemente, questão de semanas atrás, postei &lt;strong&gt;a lista que postarei diariamente aqui no blog&lt;/strong&gt;, com algumas mudanças e particularidades:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Apesar de não ser regra do fórum, &lt;strong&gt;minha lista consiste de apenas uma música por artista/banda&lt;/strong&gt;. Alguns membros fazem isso por acharem mais fácil e interessante, outros pensam exatamente o contrário. Minha escolha foi essa e aqui será assim também.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Haverá pequenas mudanças na lista postada aqui em relação com a postada no fórum, principalmente entre as posições 100 e 80. Músicas que esqueci por ter compilado em cima da hora e a retirada de outras que não mereciam estar lá.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Os gêneros &lt;strong&gt;Jazz e Música Clássica não foram adicionados&lt;/strong&gt;. Na minha visão não há como compará-los com música pop. São mundos diferentes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- A frequência de posts será de &lt;strong&gt;uma música por dia&lt;/strong&gt;, com seus devidos comentários, informações e links para download.
