Creative couple, Joe and Kristin, bought their house in April 2004. Located in the historic West Adams area of Los Angeles, the neighborhood is a combination of medium to large Craftsman and Victorian homes, along with other assorted styles. Although the house is a restored Craftsman (which the couple loves), they also love the look of Danish style and have slowly been adding pieces into their home. They particularly like the mix of a contemporary design with the warmth of rich wood colors and textures. Now Joe and Kristen's home is full of an interesting mix of styles and they love how it all works altogether.

I first met Karen after I was browsing in her store, MackeyBlue, and both my husband and I were eyeing a gigantic old canvas map of Italy that hung behind the cash wrap. We must have been on our way somewhere and couldn't browse further but a day later I called her from work to inquire how much that map was selling for because it would look just perfect in our home. Too late, the map had sold and I vowed to myself to not hesitate next time I spotted a treasure. Karen herself has similar thinking and loves the hunt for vintage treasures so much that she not only opened her store but has furnished and decorated her whole house with her finds!

With their quirky sculptural forms and amazing longevity, gourds make the perfect unfussy fall centerpiece. After spending a few years in the Midwest where grocery stores abounded all autumn with waxed gourds, I had all but written them off as mere festive fall kitsch, but these simple arrangements have definitely convinced me otherwise.

So we've arrived at Week Five of the Cure, which demands some crucial tasks, like de-cluttering your file cabinets, but also some fun ones designed to help you settle more comfortably into your home as it evolves. You may have noticed by now that the backbone of the Cure is really about achieving a kind of intimacy with your home, a heightened awareness of its "well-being," and learning to maintain that awareness as a lifestyle. This week's tasks get at the heart of this goal.
