The Fair Lakes Hyatt has offered us the following rates for New Years Eve (roughly half off the regular rate!). Hurry though - rooms must be booked by December 10th!

Check in time is 3pm, check out is 12 noon. Free shuttle is available to and from The Waterford. Don't forget your swim suit for the indoor heated pool and spa; before or after you use the state of the art fitness center is up to you.

Fine print: There is no charge for children under 18 years of age staying in an adult’s room using existing bedding. All Room Rates are subject to state, local and any occupancy taxes in effect at the time of the Function, currently 9%. Individual reservation cancellations must be received 24 hours in advance to avoid a charge of one night’s room and tax.

A Party with a Purpose is benefiting more than just the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This evening is a collaborative effort between several DC area organizations: Capital Hospice, Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia, United Cerebral Palsy and NMSS.

It seems we have a minor glitch in the way the registration form was set up at NMSS. If you are, say a family of four, and wish to purchase tickets for the event - you will need to go through the registration twice - once for the adult tickets and once for the children's tickets.

I apologize for the inconvenience - if you would prefer to register by phone or mail - we can do that as well.

Had two excellent donations today:

Linens and Things donated a gift certificate and discount coupons to go with it!
A whitewater adventure was generously donated by River Riders.

Worked on an evite today, as well as addressing more envelopes. Formal invitations will be hitting mailboxes over the next few weeks and the evite will follow. Being that all of the tickets are purchased online, it makes sense to send an online invitation.

Wow, after a few days of nothing, yesterday's mail was fantastic!

From the John Travolta camp - we received a full sized poster from the movie Hairspray, signed of course.
From the Steelers - came a decorative 75th anniversary license plate and a print with a signature.
America's Most Wanted also got in on the act with John Walsh autographing a picture.
And finally, two tickets to see Stabat Mater at the Kennedy Center, courtesy of the Choral Arts Society of Washington.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The generosity of everyone really is something special. The silent auction is going to be an experience. We are starting to consider offering some of the items online. Do you think an online auction would work?

What is MS?

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society defines MS as: an autoimmune disease. The body's own defense system attacks myelin, the fatty substance that surrounds and protects the nerve fibers of the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord (the central nervous system). The damaged myelin may form scar tissue (sclerosis). Often the nerve fiber is also damaged. When any part of the myelin sheath or nerve fiber is damaged or destroyed, nerve impulses to and from the brain are distorted or interrupted, producing the various symptoms of MS.

But what is MS really? Each person diagnosed with multiple sclerosis would answer differently.

MS can mean that you can't enjoy a summer's day, as the heat exacerbates your symptoms.
MS can mean that you can't drive anymore, as your vision is not what it once was.
MS can mean that you can't feel your legs, can't ever be too far from a bathroom, can't carry your child in your arms, can't work an 8 hour day.

Another fantastic donation came in the mail today: Four tickets to The Science Museum of Virginia. Thinking ahead, this would go great with a Richmond area restaurant and maybe even a hotel!

We will be packaging items together in baskets and are looking to create 'experiences'. Any ideas are welcomed.

What's the skinny on the kid's party?

The children's party will be held in a separate room at The Waterford. It is for children 5 and older. They will have their own party complete with a kid friendly buffet, video games, music, movies, books, board games, quiet corner, sparkling cider midnight toast and balloon drop. The room will be staffed with volunteers and you may spend as much or as little time in the room as you would like.

Tickets for the children's party are available at $40 each.

We are looking for some older teens to help chaparone the party. This would be a perfect way to fulfill community service hours! All chaparones will receive free admission as well as documentation of their volunteer time.
