How to Make a Bouquet Garni

Creating a bouquet garni is simple. You’ll only need a few fresh herbs and either kitchen twine or a small piece of cheesecloth. Typical herbs to include are:

Thyme: This herb brings an earthy, savory taste that complements numerous French recipes.  

Bay leaves add a nuanced depth with their mild bitterness and aromatic essence.  

Parsley: Fresh parsley offers a gentle, refreshing flavor that enhances your bouquet.  

Bundle the herbs with twine wrapped around them several times, or fold them into cheesecloth and bind them with twine. I use loose peppercorns in mine, so cheesecloth works best here. The bundle should be compact enough to fit into your pot but large enough to release its flavors slowly. If using twine, tie it securely to prevent the herbs from falling out.

Fresh or Frozen?

You can make a bouquet using fresh herbs, which gives your dish the brightest, most vibrant flavors. However, if you don’t have fresh herbs on hand, you can also use dried herbs (dried herbs are more potent, so remember to reduce the amount).

You can freeze your bouquet garni to have on hand. Just wrap the bundle in plastic wrap, place it in an airtight bag, and freeze it until needed.

How to Use 

Using the bouquet is simple. Place it gently in the pot while cooking and remove it once it is complete. It will add complex flavor without adding individual herbs. Plus, it looks pretty when bundled. It’s a simple way to flavor soups, stews, braises, or cooking liquid for roasted meats or vegetables.

You might wonder why washing grapes is so important. It’s all about safety! Cleaning all produce removes harmful bacteria like E. coli and salmonella. It’s easy to get your grapes squeaky clean and ready to eat? You can start by rinsing your grapes in cold water in a colander. Gently rub the grapes to whisk away any dirt or debris. For an extra-fresh finish, try soaking them in a bowl of cool water with a few tablespoons of baking soda or vinegar for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse them again under cold water to remove any residue from your cleaning solution, and pat them dry with a clean dish or paper towel to prevent them from getting mushy.

If you are in a hurry, you can at least use a spritz of produce spray in a colander, gently rub it, and rinse with cold water. The first method, though, costs less and is very effective.

Tuck this handy-dandy tip away: don’t wash them too soon, as this can lead to mushy grapes! Only wash what you will eat, and just before eating them. Please be sure to store the remainder in a breathable bag or a covered bowl in the fridge.

This coating helps keep bacteria out, so washing eggs from the store at home is not necessary. Washing them can increase the risk of contamination because the wash water can get inside the shell and introduce bacteria. So, your job is simple—keep store-bought eggs in the fridge, and you’re good to go.

Backyard or Farmers Market Eggs: Wash Right Before Use

Things are slightly different when dealing with fresh eggs from backyard chickens or a local farmer. These eggs still have the bloom intact, which acts as a natural barrier, keeping bacteria out and moisture in. As a result, they can be safely stored at room temperature for a few weeks. However, once you wash them, that protective coating is removed, which shortens their shelf life and makes them more vulnerable to contamination. So, it’s best to wash farm-fresh eggs just before you use them.

When washing fresh eggs, don’t soak them in water—this can allow bacteria to enter through the porous shell. Instead, gently rinse them under warm water (90-120°F), which helps to push any bacteria away from the surface. You can also use a damp towel to wipe off any visible dirt or debris, but be gentle to avoid breaking the shell.

Quick Tips for Washing Local Eggs Safely:

• If you find dirt on your eggs, gently scrub it off with a rough sponge.
• Use warm running water that’s about 20°F warmer than the egg itself.
• Avoid using soap or soaking the eggs—this can introduce bacteria.

It’s my favorite way to stay in shape these days. We live in the Shenandoah Valley and have plenty of hills to climb to amp up our cardio. In fact, our house sits at the bottom of a steep one that we tackle most days. When we emerge, a passerby at the top consistently comments, “That’s a tough one. ” Yes, it is, but Ollin and I encourage each other to climb to the summit at a fast pace.

You can explore your neighborhood, visit a park you’ve always admired, or even stroll in the mall on bad weather days. I highly recommend Hoka shoes. After a glowing recommendation from my daughter-in-law, a phys ed teacher, I decided to try them out. They were so amazing that I bought a pair for my husband, Ollin. Admittedly, they are a bit pricey, but trust me, it’s like walking on a cloud. Being seriously dedicated to exercise my entire adult life, I’ve learned that having comfortable gear is critical. Without it, you’re more likely to give up before you start. That’s how important it is.
