We recently had a couple share the story of their shaggy dog, Dovekie, with us. Having had a Golden Retriever and a Chocolate Lab in the past, the couple was intrigued when they saw an ad for a “Golden Retriever – Lab mix” puppies. They picked out a cute little black puppy thinking they had found the ideal mix. However, as Dovekie matured they noticed some changes that made them wonder.

Dovekie ‘s eyebrows and whiskers began to grow and his snout got longer and longer. As he grew, it was clear that there were some other breeds in Dovekie. To help solve the mystery we provided not one, but two different Breed tests to try to shed some light on Dovekie’s lineage.

Well, the results are in and you’ll probably never guess what Dovekie’s actual mix is.

Dovekie is now about 60 lbs and not yet a year old. He has a white patch on his chest but is otherwise black.

If you think you know what breeds are in this cute dog, send us your guess and we’ll send you a coupon for a $5 discount on a DNA test.

We’ll post Dovekie’s actual pedigree here in a few days so check back for the solution to the mystery.

The State Highway Patrol in conjunction with the FBI has issued a warning advising all dog owners to keep their dogs indoors until further notice. Dogs are being picked off one at a time on an almost continual basis throughout the city. They are falling in great numbers. Police in the city advise all dog owners not to walk their dogs – KEEP THEM INDOORS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!

Meet Brutus, a military K9 at McChord.
He’s huge – part Boxer and part British Bull Mastiff and tops the scales at 200 lbs. His handler took the picture. Brutus is running toward me because he knows I have some Milk Bone treats, so he’s slobbering away! I had to duck around a tree just before he got to me in case he couldn’t stop, but he did. Brutus won the Congressional Medal of Honor last year from his tour in Iraq.

His handler and four other soldiers were taken hostage by insurgents. Brutus and his handler communicate by sign language and he gave Brutus the signal that meant ‘go away but come back and find me’. The Iraqis paid no attention to Brutus. He came back later and quietly tore the throat out of one guard at one door and another guard at another door. He then jumped against one of the doors repeatedly (the guys were being held in an old warehouse) until it opened. He went in and untied his handler and they all escaped. He’s the first K9 to receive this honor. If he knows you’re ok, he’s a big old lug and wants to sit in your lap. Enjoys the company of cats.

K-9 Congressional Medal of Honor Winner

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

Although this is a heart-warming story, several friends have pointed out that this story is apparently fiction. According to Snopes, this is untrue and there have been no Medals of Honor awarded to any dogs for service in Iraq. There’s also an obvious issue with the picture, in that this dog is clearly not a Boxer-Mastiff mix. As it turns out, the dog in the picture is a retired Police Dog from Scottsdale named Spike. Spike is actually a Belgian Malinois who weighs in at less than 100 lbs.
