Forested landscapes worldwide are increasingly integrated in global processes of trade, market development, resource exploitation and climate change. Site-based or community level approaches can no longer cope with these issues which exceed the local sphere of influence. Although landscapes are usually considered to be appropriate levels to negotiate land use options, they are rarely recognised as units of political administrative decision making, hence do not have any formal place in…

Time:September 14, 2015 to September 25, 2015
Location:Indonesia

Despite the world-wide increase of food availability, there are still around one billion people undernourished. This is far above of the target of MDG 1. There is now substantial evidence that malnutrition has life-long negative impacts on productivity and income-generating potential of the population. Agricultural programmes need to become more nutrition sensitive.

Why doesn’t a reduction in poverty automatically result in improved nutritional status? Can agricultural development…

Time:October 12, 2015 to October 23, 2015
Location:Ethiopia

As a resource manager, you are well aware of the multiple perspectives of the daily problems you face: many stakeholders, different interests, different value sets, resulting in problems that manifest at different levels. Dealing with these complexities and uncertainties requires an adaptive management approach.

Rapid change and increasing complexity characterise the natural resources management (NRM) practice. The NRM domain is increasingly seen as multidisciplinary, matching various…

Time:October 19, 2015 to October 30, 2015
Location:Ghana

Loss of genetic resources has resulted in major concerns about future food and nutrition security. The vulnerability of agricultural systems towards pests, diseases and climate change makes the topic urgent, and has led to the development of a range of conservation strategies. Community Biodiversity Management (CBM) distinguishes itself from other conservation strategies by enhancing social interdependence, collaboration, adaptability and autonomy.

We have moved to our new online platform!

Exactly a year ago, we started writing a plan to completely rethink our online platform, to create a platform that suits our needs, to have a platform that caters for cross-fertilization between people across borders and to find a technical partner that can help us grow our online network.

Today, the plan is reality. With a small and dedicated team, we created the first release of a whole new platform and we’re finally ready to invite you over to join us in our new home. We're excited and nervous at the same time. We hope you'll like what we've built and we hope you think it will be a better experience, but we'll only know until you all start interacting on the new platform.

As of today, this website is closed for new contributions. It will be online for a while, but we closed the forum and news will no longer be posted here.

How to activate your account from Ning on our new platform?
Your existing account from the Ning website was moved to our servers. The only thing we didn’t migrate was your password, so to be able to log in to the new platform you have to create a new password.

Step 1:
Go to http://agriprofocus.com/recover?user=ning-user

Step 2:
Enter the email address you use to log in to our old Ning website and click Submit

Step 3:
Check your email. You should receive an email from Agriprofocus called ‘Reset Password’. It can take a few minutes to receive this message. Otherwise check your Spam/Junk-folder.

Step 4:
Click the link in the email. It will take you to the page to create a new password:

Step 5:
Enter your chosen password.
Type the exact same password again to confirm the password.
Click ‘Submit’

You now have created a new password and are able to login to the new platform. You should automatically be redirected to the login page. If not:

Step 6:
Log in with your new password at http://agriprofocus.com/login

Once logged in

You should see your personal stream with all the posts from our network, more recent ones on top.

In the Knowledge Base, you find an overview of the themes we’re actively working on, with links to our Innovation Communities

The Directory is the place where you can search for people and organizations.

First things you can do

You can check your personal profile. We migrated some personal details from Ning, but we added some new features for your profile page. It’s therefore worth to update your profile first. You can find your profile by clicking on your name on the top-right of the page.

After updating your profile, you can of course start posting updates right from your stream.

In case you are looking for our dedicated country page, you can go to http://agriprofocus.com/uganda

We can’t wait to see you on our new platform!

Your Agri-Hub team

The new platform - We're almost there

The development team is working very hard to get the new platform to the stage that we can all move over. You can expect an email and a news update next week with details where you can log in. Somewhere next week, we will make the big move and close down this site for posting new content.

For now, we would like to just to give you a sneak preview of how the platform will look like. Here are a few screen shots. We’d love to welcome you there soon!

This is how a post looks like:

You can fill in your skills and expertise in your Profile:

You can search for other members in the directory:

PhD research in Lira on market linkages in the oilseed sector

hi everyone,

Please let me introduce myself: my name is Mirjam Schoonhoven, and I am currently a PhD Candidate at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, at the Knowledge, Technology and Innovation group. I have a Masters from the Radboud University Nijmegen in Social and Cultural Science, specialization Development Studies. After my masters I have worked at the head office of SNV in The Hague (The Netherlands) and as an advisor at the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) at their Sustainable Economic Development department. I am interested in how cooperation between farmers and other market actors comes about, and underlying issues of agency and power.

My PhD research therefore focuses on bulking and market linkages in the oilseed sector (sunflower, sesame, groundnuts, soya) in Lira, Uganda, and especially on the collaboration between farmers and several actors (middlemen, bigger traders, processors, and farmers themselves through farmer groups and cooperatives) for bulking and marketing their produce. My main question concerns how cooperation and coordination comes about and remains viable over a longer time period, and also how these processes are mediated by institutions. This will be studied through case studies of several bulking arrangements (e.g. farmer-led, trader-led, and processor-led). The research builds on action research done by SNV and IIED during 2012 and 2013, which some of you might be familiar with.

I was browsing a bit through the discussions on the ApF-forum and I thought that for instance the one concerning the role of middlemen is very much related to my research. Because I am interested in how oilseeds are bulked and marketed, and which links between actors are necessary for these processes, how they come about, and which actors have enough agency and power to shape these relations.

Coming Monday (November 3rd, 2014) I will travel to Uganda to start my first fieldwork period. I will be in Uganda for half a year, based in Lira, but the first two weeks of November (until November 13th) I will be in Kampala.

My question to you is to please contact me if you find this research interesting and have some insights to share from your own organisation / business / etc. Or if you have interesting contacts and connections to share. I am especially interested in actors working in the oilseed sector. It would also be great if you are working in Kampala and able to meet me there during the coming weeks!

Looking forward to hear from you!

Posting to the new platform will be much easier!

Dear member of our Agri-Hub,

We want to explain yet another exciting thing about our new platform:

Posting to the platform will be much easier.

On our current website, you have to think where you want to post your article or offer. We have different sections such as News and Forum and the Forum is divided into subsections such as Market Place and Access to Finance etc.

This often leads to confusion and market place offers sometimes get posted as news or news gets posted in the forum.

To stop the confusion, we’re changing our approach completely. We’ve already explained to you that you will have your own personal stream, bringing the news of your network and interests to you. You will be able to post your news, questions, offers and updates right from your personal stream.

This is what the post box will look like, and it will appear right on top of your Personal Stream.

Your post can travel to other people’s stream.

Have a look at how this works: http://youtu.be/uhzjaA_nEqg

1. By adding a network

We are moving all our Agri-Hubs into one platform. This means that it will be much easier to not just benefit from all the knowledge of our own network, but also to tap in and connect easily to fellow professionals from other countries. When posting something to the platform you can choose which networks to post to. Anyone who is subscribed to that network will receive your post as well.

2. By adding tags

On top of networks to post to, you can add tags to label your post with keywords that mark what your post is about. Other people can follow these tags, so they receive all posts tagged with that keyword in their stream.

This is how your post can travel to people across the platform by simply adding extra networks and keywords. It gives you power to reach across borders whenever you want to.

A new platform: Introducing you to your Personal Stream

Dear member of our Agri-Hub,

We previously updated you on the things you can expect on our new platform. Today we want to highlight the most important improvement: your personal stream.

[<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/npYnsmwI3UU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>]

With redesigning our online Agri-Hub, we have the opportunity to put your experience using the website central in the design. One of the biggest flaws of what we currently have is that you, as a user, have to search whether something new is posted, either to the news-section, or the forum, or in events. That is definitely not ideal.

Therefore, on the new platform, after logging in on the new platform, you'll land on your personal stream.

Your personal stream will contain all the messages from our Agri-Hub. To make it even more relevant to you, you can subscribe to topics of your interest and follow people and individual discussions, regardless of the networks they belong to.

So instead of you browsing the website for what is new, you will receive updates automatically in your stream.

We sure hope that this will make your experience using our website a lot better.

Next week, we’ll introduce you to another new feature of our new platform.

Kind regards,

Coordination Team

The Formula of Successful Commercial Farming

It has been a while without posting something quite engaging on this platform due to unavoidable circumstances. Nonetheless, due to my earlier rich pieces, I have actively been engaged, with several inquiries coming through both on mail and phone from both members and non-members (who visit the site).

In this article, you will possibly find out why you have been performing poorly in farming, but most importantly, it is an eye opener for those who want to excel in commercial farming at a low cost.

We all want to be successful commercial farmers, right? But this doesn’t just fall like the biblical manna nor does it just come on a silver platter.

There are steps some farmers skip yet critical to successful commercial farming. In fact, according to my research, a good number of farmers venture into a particular project by bandwagon-without any form of consultation/research!

Once they see someone or read about farmers succeeding in a particular farming project, they will move quickly to implement the same.
This is the gist of my article;successful commercial farming requires thorough research about a number of things; where to plant, when to plant, where to plant, how to plant and which seeds to plant (where to get quality seeds), how to store the harvested produce and where to sell (market) are among the many considerations the farmer must have in their mind to increase their chances of gainful farming.

This of course will involve a [small] cost in terms of consultation but it will greatly improve your yields or reduce on the huge losses you would have incurred.
I know there are many agricultural experts with diverse knowledge not only on this platform, but also across the country. My priceless advice is; utilize them for the better.

Additionally, districts and sub-counties in Uganda have agricultural extension officers provided for by the government. These are supposed to provide free guidance on the best agronomic practices and generally on how to go about farming.
In fact, before you engage into farming, get a picture of your expected expenditure as well as anticipated earnings/income.

To re-emphasize the need for research, I would like to use the following example. As a coffee farmer and nursery operator, I was recently approached by a civil servant working with some local government in Uganda; he wanted to procure 100 seedlings of coffee.

As someone in the coffee business and more importantly a researcher, I asked him whether he had already planted some or he was planning to expand on his farm. His response wasn’t convincing and didn’t make economic sense; he was just starting and didn’t have expansion plans! He said the government was promoting the growing of coffee and therefore, he didn’t want to remain behind. To cut the story short, I told him, to make economic sense, he needed to plant an acre (about 450 seedlings).

This would earn him about Shs7.2m a year (there are two seasons of coffee in a year and if each tree of the 450 trees gives you 4kgs per season, this would translate into 3600kgs annually. If the price is Shs2000 per kg=Shs7.2m!), when he started harvesting in three years’ time against Shs1.6m he would earn annually from 100 seedlings.

He had the resources (money and land) but lacked knowledge. He thanked me and adhered to my advice; he bought 900 seedlings (for two acres). He had acted by hearsay/bandwagon.

Finally, while to a certain extent, successful farming depends on good luck, especially in our circumstances where we almost entirely depend on rain; there are some considerations that a farmer has to take into account to maximize their chances of success as highlighted above.

VOLUNTEER APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR 2015 SPRING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT WORK CAMPS IN UGANDA

Date: March/April 2015

Early Bookings: 20% off (Booking 20th-Oct- 20th- Nov 2014)

Beacon of Hope Uganda Work-camps typically bring together a temporary community of 10-20 international volunteers from different backgrounds to provide services to local community projects. The volunteers carry out skilled and unskilled tasks that would not otherwise be possible. The practical work is only part of the main objective. The work is a tool and method to promote intercultural understanding and friendship between the volunteers and with the local community.

The volunteer workcamp for this year will be a wonderful learning experience on many levels, particularly for languages, but also for practical work skills, social and interpersonal skills, geographical and intercultural experience, self-awareness, understanding the realities and hopes of the hosting community, seeing life as it is from a wholly different perspective… Tolerance of differences, willingness to share, a sense of humor and a constructive approach to solving interpersonal problems are essential qualities for workcamp volunteers.

The beneficiaries of our projects will welcome you into their community with open arms. You will be made to feel at home and you will taste all the different cultural foods, see their dancing and have the opportunity to join in. The children always enjoy having visitors and will be very friendly towards you. They can take you for walks to see the monkeys and you can learn about the various local medicinal plants.

AREAS OF SERVICES:

Community Building and Construction (Help Build a Social Center)

Volunteers, who will indicate their desire to work in construction and building, will enjoy a wide variety of projects to choose from every week. This is the most flexible branch of BoHU operations, as volunteers may choose to work on different projects every week or, alternatively, work on various stages of one project through to completion (assuming they are able to stay throughout the duration of the project).

When your volunteer vacation comes to an end, you'll be tired and a bit dirty. But, you will have made a big difference in the lives of local children, youth and general community. You'll leave the village with visible proof of the work you\'ve done and happy memories of the people you\'ve helped.

We wish to set up a Social Center ("The Hope Center") in the middle of Kasala village in favor of its inhabitants and surrounding villages – to supply and support them for an independent life step by step. The plan is to construct 5 buildings with different functions:

"The Hope Academy" (2 buildings): Nursery- and Primary school should provide Education for up to 450 children during the week. On weekends, it is planned to use the rooms for teachings and community outreaches, such as raising awareness about hygienical problems and diseases, as well as organizing business trainings. Later in future, we also would like to extend the trainings to teaching in practical professions such as joinery, tailoring or hair dressing, to later on include them actively in the life of the Social Center itself.

A Health Clinic: Starting on the bases of a pharmacy that provides medical supplies, we want to develop the clinic up to a medical standard of Level II. This clinic will be able to also serve some of the surrounding villages, taking the number of helped people to around 4600.

Orphanage / Dormitory (2 buildings): The first residence will serve the workers and especially teachers at the Social Center to assure their reliable availability and reducing problems of accessing the Center. The second building will be a safe shelter for orphans / disadvantaged children, who will be supervised by teachers, but especially by so nominated "Mama's" of the village community.

Although certain projects often present unique needs and challenges, there are several core areas (and corresponding activities) you will likely find yourself contributing to at some point during your service as a BoHU Construction Volunteer: Site Preparation (demolition, digging foundations, clearing rubble, etc.), Building (Mixing and pouring concrete, bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, etc.), or Community Beautification (planting trees, landscaping, community cleanups, painting murals, etc.). Whatever your interest, rest assured you'll get your hands dirty from the start!

Read More about other areas of service!

IFDC CATALIST-Uganda Business Plan Competition For Entrepreneurs in Irish Potatoes, Rice, Oil Seeds and Cassava

IFDC CATALIST-Uganda, BiD Network and IRIS Consulting have launched a business plan competition for small and medium sized enterprises operating in or impacting the cassava, oil seeds, rice and Irish potato, value chains in Northern, Eastern and South-Western Uganda. Uganda's economy is growing; the whole region is changing fast. Entrepreneurs in the agribusiness sector upon which most families in Uganda directly depend, will have to professionalize to become more competitive. Entrepreneurs are invited to submit their business plans to become eligible for various services geared towards accessing finance and markets.

IFDC CATALIST-Uganda aims to sustainably commercialize smallholder agriculture through improved productivity and market development, resulting in marketable surpluses that raise farm incomes in Uganda, and increase regional food security for the wider East Africa and Great Lakes Region. Starting with the ‘pull’ of the market by working with commodities for which there is a strong demand, IFDC CATALIST-Uganda employs a systems approach to develop integrated cropping systems around priority commodities – Irish potato, cassava, oil seeds and rice – combined with an accelerated cluster development approach appropriate for Uganda. In addition to agricultural intensification, IFDC CATALIST-Uganda offers services for input market development, output marketing, linkages to Dutch and other agribusinesses, linkages to investors and improvement of the policy environment.

To support businesses in the mentioned value chains to increase their sales and production capacity, BiD Network and IRIS Consulting will offer various services and events related to accessing new markets and finance. Participants can become eligible for Ready4Finance and Farming as a Business training, voluntary coaching/ mentoring, breakfast networking meetings, and investor and Business2Business matchmaking services. To apply, interested entrepreneurs are invited to create a member profile and submit their business summary before 30 November 2014.
HYDROPONIC FODDER

Hello, I am engaging in commercial farming here in Jinja. Basically, I have Kuroiler chicks, pigs and cows. Recently, i came to learn about Hydroponic fodder and picked interest in it. However, my efforts to get first hand info about it are frustrated. Who can connect me to some one who has it or some one who can teach me how to grow it? Is it here in Uganda yet anyway? I am told in Kenya it is doing wonders. Any assistance is highly appreciated.

A new platform: We're getting close

Dear member of our Agri-Hub,

We're getting closer and closer to the moment that we are all going to move to our new platform. In the coming weeks we'd like to give you some highlights and sneak previews of what you can expect, starting with an overview of the most important decisions we've made during the design process.

All in one

As you may know, Agri-ProFocus is not just running this Agri-Hub, but maintains similar sites in numerous countries and on several themes. Although all the separate websites make for a wonderful community, we would love to see more cross-fertilization between the countries and easier access to important themes, no matter what country you’re from.

Therefore we are building one system, in which you will have easy access to all the information, market offers, discussions and other posts, to which you can subscribe based on your interests.

Personalized stream

If everyone will migrate into one platform, you can imagine there will be a lot of posts added to the site on a daily basis. To prevent that you’re swamped with news you’re not interested in, the system will help you create a personal stream with content that is relevant to you, either based on your location, the language you read or themes and topics you’re interested in.

Currently, there is not much difference between being logged in or out on the online Agri-Hub, except for the option to add your comment, news item or response in the forum. On the new platform, when logged in, this personal stream is what you see. You can compare this with your stream in Facebook or Twitter, in case you have an account there.

Simpler and faster

We’re investing a lot of time in making sure posting updates and finding information will be easy and clear. Posting an item and commenting can be done right from your personal stream. At the back-end we’re implementing smart options so using the search bar on the platform will present you with great results.

Finally, we’re aiming for a lean platform that loads faster when using low-bandwidth internet connections and works equally well on a desktop computer, a tablet and a mobile smartphone.

When to expect the changes?

Our planning is to migrate everyone to the new platform by the end of October. Until then, we’re happily using our current website.

If you have any questions regarding the new platform, don’t hesitate to ask us. We’ll answer them as best as we can.

New guidelines for obtaining PHYTOSANITARY tests for exporters

NOTICE EXPORTERS OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS

PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING PHYTOSANITARY CERTIFICATES

The Uganda Export Promotion Board (UEPB) is public agency set up to spearhead the development of the export sector. By working closely with government ministries and departments, UEPB is in position to collect and disseminate trade information pertaining to market conditions and compliance. In line with this UEPB would like to bring to the attention of exporters the recent developments from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries regarding issuance of phytosanitary certificates for agricultural exports.

Every consignment to be certified MUST be inspected visually and by sampling to verify the phytosanitary status. Exporters will realize that the scope of inspection has now been extended to cover aspects that were not mandatory due to the heightened food safety concerns in the importing countries specifically the EU countries.

Every inspection MUST be preceded with an Application to Inspect. Exporters must allow for sufficient time to enable inspectors prepare for and undertake the inspection. FOR INSPECTIONS TO BE DONE AT THE AIRPORT, EXPORTERS SHOULD DELIVER THE CONSIGNMENT(S) AT LEAST 3 HOURS BEFORE TIME OF FLIGHT DEPARTURE

At the time of application for inspection, the exporter MUST have all necessary documentation in place. These include invoice, packing list, source (district, sub-county, parish, grower’s name etc). If the consignment is from several growers/suppliers, then such a consignment should be properly coded to indicate the different origins.

NOTE: If inspection has been done at the Pack House, then the exporter must present – at port of exit – documentary evidence of such inspection, which should clearly reflect the place of inspection (pack house). The Ministry is in the process of registering pack houses. This on-site inspection is a short-term arrangement and is carried out at the Exporter’s cost.

For further details please contact:

Director Crop Resources

Wheat Flour Milling Machine Status in China

Wheat flour milling machine is an important means of value-added food processing and conversion for the promotion of agriculture, food and rural incomes has added a pivotal position. Therefore, we should make an objective analysis of flour milling machine market environment, seize the historical opportunities, so that is conducive to the healthy development of flour milling machine manufacturing industry in China.

Existing technical grades of wheat flour milling machine mainly divided into high, medium and low levels. According to the national industrial policies and industry development requirements we should focus on the development of high and medium grade technical level and low technical level not supported. However, our flour milling machine manufacturing production mainly in the low grade, and high-tech products currently used to rely heavily on foreign supply.

Chinese wheat flour milling machine can divided into large scale, medium scale ang small scale. Wheat flour milling machine in China manufacturing equipment mainly small and medium scale flour milling machine, and the large flour miling machine is still imported.

So wheat flour miling machine in China still needs continuous improvement in technology in order to embark on the road of independent innovation.
